In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
Now we'll look at modifying an animation in the Motion Editor. So for the seagull animation I just have the movie clip moving up into the left. But let's say I want to add that alpha tween through the Motion Editor. To do that, I'll select the tween in the Timeline and jump over to the Motion Editor. I'll scroll-up to give some more room for the Motion Editor and I'll minimize the Properties panel. So I now have plenty of space to work in the Motion Editor. So what I'm going to do is move the playhead in the Motion Editor to Frame 20 and then I'm going to scroll-down to the Color Effects section and there I will click the Plus button to add an alpha animation.
So you'll then see Alpha amount in the Color Effects section. So with the playhead at Frame 20, I'll just click the button to insert a keyframe. So now I have a keyframe and there I can just click-and-drag the Alpha slider up to 100. So there is my alpha tween for the beginning. Now I'll scroll all the way to the end, go to Frame 220 and do the same thing. I'll click to add a keyframe and then you can see that the alpha is already at 100 so I can just go to the last frame, then I'll click to insert a keyframe and just drag that Alpha slider down to 0.
So now if I go back to the Timeline and go to the very first frame, I can play the animation directly in Flash by pressing the Return key. So there is the alpha tween and then you can see it tween out at the end of the animation. So with the Motion Editor it's a little bit easier and faster to modify our animation to add an alpha tween. Now let's look at adding the bird prints animation with the Motion Editor.
So I'll hide the Seagull layer and I'll show the birdprints layer. Now I'll go to the first frame and I'll right-click the object and choose Create Motion tween. Let's go to the Motion Editor with the tween selected and then I'm going to pan down a little bit. I want to align the bottom of this image with the bottom guide. So I'll go to the last keyframe in the Motion Editor and for the Y property, I'll click to insert a keyframe. Once I've inserted the keyframe, I'll just click-and-drag the Y position to get the object in place.
That looks good. So now I want to extend the animation to be 240 frames. So I'll go to the Timeline and then click-and-drag to extend the animation. Now it's 240 frames. So I can click on the animation, and add the alpha tween. So I'll do it in the same way that I added the other alpha tween. I'll go to the very beginning, add the Alpha color effect, insert a keyframe at Frame 20, drag the slider up to 100, go to the end, click on Frame 220, insert another keyframe, go to the last frame, insert another keyframe, and drag the Alpha slider down to 0, and that's it.
So now I have the bird prints animation. If I wanted to refine it, I could select the object on the Stage and then use the Up arrow keys to align the object with the bottom of the Stage. So now I've refined my animations using the Motion Editor.
