In this chapter we'll talk about some things that will help you work more effectively in Flash. If you're following along, I'm working in 01_Asset_Management.fla in the chapter 1 folder in the exercise files folder. The first thing we'll talk about in regards to working more effectively in Flash, is something called Digital Asset Management. Digital Asset Management may sound kind of confusing, but it simply refers to keeping your content organized. For example, this Flash file has a few different layers. Let's say we had many, many layers inside of our Flash file.
One way to stay organized or to manage your digital assets is to put your layers inside of folders. One thing we can do for this file is put the animation and background layers in the same folder. So to create a layer folder, a layer folder simply hold slayers, click the Insert Layer Folder button. It's at the bottom left of the timeline and it has a folder for an icon. And you create a new folder, it appears in the timeline. So you can double click the folder name to change the folder name to whatever you want. I'm going to call this folder art.
I'll move the folder by clicking and dragging it right above the animation layer. You can put layers in a layer folder by clicking and dragging those layers on top of the layer folder. Now I'm clicking the animation layer, holding my mouse down, hovering the mouse over the art folder, then I'm going to release my mouse button. does the animation layer then indents indicating that it is inside of the art folder, and I'm going to click and drag the background layer and drop it inside of the art layer folder as well. When I drop the background layer in, notice that it indents as well, but now the background layer is in front of the animation layer. So now what I'm going to do is click and drag the animation layer above the background layer.
And now my art layers are inside of the art folder. You can expand and collapse a layer folder by clicking the arrow to the left of that layer folder. If I click the arrow to the left of the art layer folder you can see that the layer collapses and though I can no longer see the layers in the timeline, the art in those layers still exists on the stage. Click the arrow again to the left of letter folder to expand the layer. Now collapse the folder again. Another way to manage your digital assets is by creating folders in the library. Let's do that right now. The library in this file has several different types of assets.
It has some bitmap graphics, some graphic symbols and a sound. So let's create some layer folders to organize the content in our library. At the bottom left of the library you'll see a Folder icon. That creates a new library folder. Click the folder icon to put a new layer folder inside the library. Call the new folder bitmaps. Create a second folder and we'll call the second folder symbols. And let's create a third folder by clicking the Insert Folder button in the library and we'll call the third folder sounds.
Now let's drag all the appropriate library items into the appropriate folders. I'm going to click and drag the animating.jpg bitmap image in library, drag into the bitmaps folder. I'll do the same thing for importing.jpg, mask.jpg and mirror.jpg. Notice the library items inside of the folder are indented to show that they're inside a particular folder. If I double-click the bitmaps folder. The content in the folder then collapses. Notice that vector.jpg is a bitmap image, and it's not inside of the bitmap folder. So you just click and drag it right into that bitmaps folder, and can see that vector.jpg is now inside of the bitmaps folder. I'll double-click to collapse that folder and I'll drag the graphic symbols gfcAnimating, gfcImporting, gfcMask and gfcVector inside of the symbols folder.
I'll double click the symbols folder to collapse it. Then I'll drag voice.aif into the sounds folder. I'll double click the sounds folder to collapse that folder as well. So all of our library items are still available, but they're more organized now and easier to find. Organizing your library items into folders is especially helpful as your library increases. And there's a look at digital asset management Flash.
