Through several hands-on tutorials, instructor Todd Perkins shows how to best build dynamic, streamlined sites using Flash CS3 Professional. Learn how to create custom keyboard shortcuts, apply advanced text techniques such as animating scrolling text with custom easing controls, and using advanced animation techniques. Flash CS3 Professional Beyond the Basics covers many challenging features, including adding complex interactivity to a Flash CS3 project and getting Flash content on a phone. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.
In this chapter we'll talk about making Flash files accessible. Now, what do I mean by accessible. when you design content for the Web typically your goal is to have that content viewable by as many people as possible, not to isolate anybody, especially those who have special needs in terms of vision or hearing. If you're following along, I'm working in 01_Making_Accessible.fla in the Chapter 10 folder, in the Exercise Files folder. A lot of what you can do as far as making a Flash file accessible, involves using the Accessibility panel. You can access the Accessibility panel by choosing Window, Other Panels, Accessibility, or you can open the Accessibility panel through the Property Inspector. I'm going to close the Accessibility panel now, and with everything deselected, I'm going to click the Accessibility button in the Property Inspector.
The Accessibility panel is a dynamic panel. Just select the Property inspector, so it changes based on what you have selected. When you have nothing selected you have the option to control Accessibility for your whole movie. So what I'm going to do here is check the Make movie accessible box. Checking this box, makes your movie accessible by those viewing your movie with a Screen Reader. A Screen Reader can then read text in a dynamic text field based on which options you have checked here. So the first one we have is Make movie accessible and then Make child objects accessible. Now the child objects preferr the text fields inside of Movie Clips or buttons.
Checking this label will make Screen Readers interpret your dinamic text and input text and buttons as labels instead of text objects. And there's a quick look at making your Flash movie accessible.
