In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
Let's look at importing our images into Flash. So on the Stage I'm starting out with a frame rate of 24 frames per second, the size of 750x500 and I'm going to make the Stage background black. Also, before I import the images, I want to drop some guides down. So I'll zoom out just a little bit. I use the keyboard shortcut Command+ Minus by the way, Ctrl+Minus on the PC, and then I'll show my rulers by going to View > Rulers and then I'll click-and-drag out some guides. I'm doing this because some of my images are going to be larger than my Stage size and I definitely want to make sure that I know where the Stage is.
So I don't want to make part of the background showing when I don't want it to show. So I have my guides placed and now I'm going to double-click them to make sure they're all in the right place. So the position for the first one should be 0 pixels. I'm doing these both for the top and left guides, so 0 and 0. And then the bottom right guides should have positions of 500 and 750. So I have my guides. Now it's time to import my images. So I'll press the keyboard shortcut Command+R, Ctrl+R on the PC to import images.
And inside of the Chapter 22 folder, I'll go in the Photos folder and then I'm going to Shift+Click all the images to import them. So I have five and they're all being placed on the Stage. Once they're placed I'm going to right -click my selection and I'm going to choose Distribute to Layers. That way Flash will organize my file into layers and the layers will be named same as the bitmap images. So we've got seaweed.jpg, seashore.jpg, etcetera. So now I'll convert these to movie clips. Now the reason why I use movie clips instead of graphic symbols is because I can apply filters to movie clips and do a few other things that I can't do to graphic symbol.
So in case I ever want to add those features, I can. So I'll just select each bitmap, press F8 on the keyboard to convert it to a movie clip, and then I'll give them the appropriate names. So seaweed. I'll hide that one, this new one will be seashore, hide it, seagull, hide, this is the crab, hide, and then finally the bird prints.
So now we've imported all of the images into Flash and we're ready to start working on the application.
