In this chapter we are going to be creating frame-by-frame animations, and before we create animations it's important to understand how the timeline works. The timeline shows your document over time. So you create animations by changing the state of the Stage over a period of time. So the timeline divides your document into frames. Frames represent different positions in time for your animation. You can preview an animation by clicking and dragging the playhead, which is the semi-opaque red rectangle at the top of the Timeline.
So I can click and drag that to preview this animation. The timeline also has some controls at the bottom that allow you to add special features, Onion Skin markers, the frame rate of your application, the elapsed time, based on the point where the playhead is at. So if I move the playhead to Frame 10, I can see that 0.3 seconds have elapsed. So what I really wanted you to take out of this is that your timeline is organized into frames and you use the frames to create animation, which is a series of different states of artwork over a period of time.
