In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
In Flash, you create gradients using the Color panel. So in this movie we'll explore how to create your own custom gradients. So I'll select my avocado shape on the Stage, and I'll open the Color panel. So using the Color panel, you can create your own custom gradients. Also note that if you use the Swatches panel, you can apply pre-made gradients to your artwork. Of course, you can save your own custom gradients to the Swatches panel as well. So we are in the Color panel and I'm going to apply a Radial gradient to the avocado. So through the drop-down menu , I'll pick Radial gradient.
So now let's say I want to have the inner color to be a lighter color, and the outer color to be a darker color. So I'll replace the outer color with green color for my avocado. What I'll do is I'll get that same green color for the left color, and then I'll select Brightness and click-and-drag the Brightness slider all the way up. Now, I'll click away, so you can see the gradient applied. When you are working with the gradient , you'll get some additional options.
One option is called the Flow. The Flow options give you control over how your gradient looks, when you transform it using the Gradient Transform tool. The options you set here, apply outside of the bounds of the gradient that you set with that tool. So you can have the gradient extend, reflect or repeat based on how you use the Gradient Transform tool. We'll talk about the Gradient Transform tool in a later movie. So now let's see what a Linear gradient looks like. When I change the fill type to Linear Gradient, Flash automatically kept the same colors and applied them to my shape.
So now you can see the gradient moving from left to right across the avocado shape. If you want to add more colors to your gradient, you can click right below that fill preview area. Before you click, you'll see that there is a Plus button by your mouse. So you can add colors. If you want to change a color, select the color in the gradient that you want to change. You can tell that it's selected because you'll see a black arrow above it. Then you can make the necessary change. If you want to remove a color in your gradient, click-and-drag it down. So now I only have two colors again.
So if you want to add a gradient in Flash, you can create your own custom gradient using the Color panel or you can apply a pre-made gradient using the Swatches panel.
