The animation tools have been greatly enhanced in Flash CS4, and Todd Perkins teaches their advanced capabilities in Flash CS4 Professional Tools for Character Animation. He shows how to master the new Motion Tween model and the Motion Editor to control easing and effects such as Squash and Stretch. He demonstrates how to use the new 3D tools to add rotation, perspective shadows, and layered animations. Complex interactive animations and walk cycles are created without a line of code using bone systems. Todd also demonstrates the power of advanced masking, sound effect syncing, and much more. Exercise files accompany the course.
In this movie we will use animation curves to create a bounce animation for this monster's body. If you are following along, you can open up Creating_Bounce.fla from the Chapter 3 folder or you can just have a movie clip on the Stage. On the Stage I will dive into the Spider movie clip and then I am going to lock all the layers except for the Body layer. The Body layer is already a movie clip, it's an instance of a movie clip called Body. What I am going to do is create a motion tween. So I will right-click or Ctrl-click the body on the Stage and choose Create Motion Tween and I am going to move the body up just a little bit using my keyboard and then what I am going to do is go to the last frame here and on the last frame, which is frame 12, I am going press Down on my keyboard to move the body down a little bit.
Now I don't want to do a really drastic animation, I want to do something simple. I just want to look like the monster's body is being affected by a walking. So it's going to bounce up and down a little bit. So I will select the body animation then I will jump over to Motion Editor. Now I am going to create a custom easing curve that's going to loop a little bit. So it's going to start at 0% and end at 0% and in between it going to go up and down. So I am going to scroll all the way to the bottom in the Motion Editor and add a new custom Ease and I will expand my custom Ease and scroll down so I can see it all the way. I am just going to expand the Motion Editor a little bit and then I will select the last box in the custom Ease, click and drag that all the way to the bottom and then what I will do is add some control points to this animation.
So I will put 1 at frame 4, so then Command-click on frame 4 and drag that all the way to 100. Then I will put 1 at frame 6, so I will Command-click at frame 6 and drag that 1 down to about 50. It doesn't matter if it's exactly at 50. Then I will create another one at frame 9. So I am going to Command-click at frame 9, Ctrl-click on the PC, I will click and drag the control point up to about 85%. Again, we are not looking for an exact amount here. I just want it to be random when it's applied so that the monster will bounce up and down.
So with my custom Ease in place, I am going to scroll up and apply the custom Ease to my Basic Motion and then I will test the movie and watch monster bounce up and down as it moves, Command+Return on the Mac, Ctrl+Enter on the PC. There is our bouncing monster animation. So remember that when you are creating your custom animation curves, you don't have to be limited to a specific type of curve but you can get creative to create cool, natural feeling animations.
