In Flash Professional CS5 Essential Training, author Todd Perkins explains the fundamentals of Flash Professional CS5, the industry standard for creating animations and interactive applications for the web, desktop, and mobile devices. This course starts with the basics, such as using the drawing tools to create simple animations, and progresses to automating animation with tweens and adding interactivity with ActionScript. This course also covers how to add sound and video to projects, enhance realism with effects like easing, and publish a project to a variety of platforms. Exercise files are included.
Let's say you had an animation stored in a graphic symbol and you wanted to convert that animation into a movie clip. There're two steps of doing that Instances have something called the behavior and they're linked to a symbol. So if you want to change a graphic symbol that's already on the Stage, you'll need to change both the behavior and the symbol itself. Let's look at changing the symbol first. I'll go to the Library, and then I'm going to find the Biker animation. It's a graphic symbol.
You can tell because of the graphic symbol icon. Note that the movie clip icon has a purple background and does not have the same shapes as the graphic symbol. So I'll right-click the Biker graphic symbol and choose Properties. In this menu, I can change the type of the symbol by clicking the drop-down. So I'll go to Movie Clip and then click OK. So the biker is now a movie clip symbol. I mentioned earlier that you have to change the behavior as well. If you select the biker on the Stage and go to the Properties panel, you'll see that the drop-down menu for Instance Behavior at the top of the Properties panel says graphic symbol.
This is something that may be a little bit confusing in Flash. You can actually tell symbols to behave as different symbol types. So if I have a graphic on the Stage, I can use this drop-down menu and tell Flash to treat that instance as a movie clip and make its timeline play independently. So what I'm going to do here is change the behavior of this instance to movie clip. Now I've successfully changed this graphic symbol to a movie clip. If I test the movie in the Flash Player, you can see that it animates independent of the main timeline.
