Using blend modes, I can make changes to objects that aren't otherwise possible in Flash. For example, on the Stage here I have a bitmap image of a flower. Now let's say I wanted to make the flower appear lighter. To do that I'll take the flower image, which is an instance of a movie clip, I'll create a new layer, I'll call the new layer flower2, and then I am going to copy the flower to the flower2 layer. To do that I will select the flower keyframe on the flower layer and then again I will hold the Alt or Option key, click-and-drag once more, and when I will click-and-drag you will see my cursor update to show a Plus icon indicating that I am going to copy the frame.
I will release my mouse button and then release the Alt key. So I have successfully copied the flower onto the flower2 layer. So for the flower2 layer I'll select the instance of the movie clip and then I'll go to the Blending dropdown in the Properties panel and choose Screen. Note that the blend modes are grouped together in sections that perform similar functionality. So Darken is grouped with Multiply, Lighten is grouped with Screen, and Overlay is grouped with Hard Light. so I will choose Screen to make the image lighter and there you go.
So one of the practical uses of blend modes is to make changes to bitmap images that you couldn't make unless you had another application, like Photoshop. So by applying the blend mode I can make this change directly in Flash.
