The animation tools have been greatly enhanced in Flash CS4, and Todd Perkins teaches their advanced capabilities in Flash CS4 Professional Tools for Character Animation. He shows how to master the new Motion Tween model and the Motion Editor to control easing and effects such as Squash and Stretch. He demonstrates how to use the new 3D tools to add rotation, perspective shadows, and layered animations. Complex interactive animations and walk cycles are created without a line of code using bone systems. Todd also demonstrates the power of advanced masking, sound effect syncing, and much more. Exercise files accompany the course.
Now look at refining an armature animation by adding easing. If you are following along go ahead and open up Easing_Bones.fla from the Chapter_03 folder. If you don't have the exercise files just make sure you have an armature animation to work with. So I am going to double click my monster on the Stage and then I am going to double click one of the legs inside of the spider movie clip and we will look at easing for armatures. For armature animation you can't use the Motion Editor for easing. See we have the animation selected here and I go to the Motion Editor and I am not able to edit the animation.
So I will go up to the timeline and I will use the Property inspector to control easing. I will select the tween, so now I can see it in the Property inspector here. I can control the easing for each keyframe. So what I am going to do is go to Frame 1 and I am going to set the easing on frame one to ease out. So I am going to drag it all the way to 100 and then if you click the Type drop down you can choose the basic types of easing. So I am going to use Simple Medium for this easing. Let's going to make the animation movie little more quickly out first then slowly towards the end then I am going to select the third keyframe, I am going to have it do the same thing. So I will drag this Strength slider all the way to 100 and change the Type to Simple Medium. Now I will test the movie to see the easing in action.
So now the animation is a little bit more realistic feeling. So if you ever want to apply easing to an armature animation just put the playhead on their appropriate keyframe, click on the keyframe that you want to control in the armature and then you can control the easing through the Property inspector.
