In Fireworks CS5 Essential Training, author Jim Babbage gives a detailed overview of Fireworks CS5, Adobe's software for creating and optimizing web graphics and interactive prototypes. This course includes a detailed tour of the interface, the enhanced PNG format, and the image editing toolset in Fireworks. Critical concepts, such as prototyping for HTML applications and working with symbols, the heart of an efficient workflow in Fireworks, are covered in detail. Exercise files are included with this course.
Fireworks is a software tool for Web and application designers. It has been built from the ground up to make it easy to design and prototype for screen-based devices, be they desktop, laptop or mobile. Prototyping is the creation of a realistic example of a finished product with minimal investment in time and money. Think of it as a proof of concept. While it's not the finished product, it is realistic and functional enough to be used for client feedback and even user testing. Since Fireworks can handle both bitmaps and vectors, designers can create prototypes very quickly and pass them along to their clients for review and approval without having to spend time coding.
This prototype can take many forms, including an interactive PDF or a clickable HTML and images mockup or even an AIR prototype. Fireworks is both a creative and production tool. You can edit and create bitmap and vector graphics and then combine these two very different graphic types into a single design. You can create advanced designs using masking techniques, blending modes and even incorporate design work created in Illustrator or Photoshop. Type is also very important in design, and Fireworks comes with a powerful set of typographic features for text selection, kerning, leading, and editing.
You can harness the power of vectors in conjunction with text to create polished typographical designs. You can build and centralize an entire design application in a single file and easily placed common elements on every page using a master page. You can also share elements, including interactive ones, across selected pages in the design. Fireworks' support for FXG 2.0 means you can export your designs with a high degree of fidelity to Flash platform applications, such as Flash Catalyst. Thanks to integration with Adobe Device Central, developers of content for mobile devices can easily preview mobile applications in a variety of devices, begin the design process by choosing a device profile or even create a custom profile for a mobile device concept.
With Fireworks, you can create and deliver graphics, concepts, designs, and prototypes efficiently, no matter what screen you're developing for.
