In Fireworks CS5 Essential Training, author Jim Babbage gives a detailed overview of Fireworks CS5, Adobe's software for creating and optimizing web graphics and interactive prototypes. This course includes a detailed tour of the interface, the enhanced PNG format, and the image editing toolset in Fireworks. Critical concepts, such as prototyping for HTML applications and working with symbols, the heart of an efficient workflow in Fireworks, are covered in detail. Exercise files are included with this course.
Accurate placement of objects on the canvas is very important when you're dealing at the pixel level. Fireworks has other tool to help you in this area, on top of Rulers, Guides and Grids, and they're tooltips, Smart Guides and the Align panel. We're going to take a look at these features and see how they can speed up the layout process, but first we're going to open up a couple of files. So I'm going to go to my File menu and choose Open, and I want mockup_index_working2, and if I hold down the Control key, I can also choose another one called monthly_specials.
With those two Files selected, I'll just choose Open, and I'll open up both of those files at the same time. There we are. So there's my mockup Page there, and basically picking up where we left off in the previous movie, we've got our little photo in place. And what we want to do now is we want to add in a couple of more Elements over here in the monthly_specials area. So once again, I'm going to split the View here. I want to grab my monthly_specials file, drag it over and split the view between the two pages, and I don't need a lot of room for the monthly_specials.
So I'm just going to go ahead and reposition that a little bit, and let's take a look at this mockup a little bit closer. So I've got the monthly_specials area here, and I've also got another box down below. And if you take a good look, this is another place where Guides can come in handy, and can get a really quick understanding of when things aren't aligning up. And you'll notice that this box down below is a little bit further over to the left-hand side. So we're going to utilize one of our tools here for aligning these Options. So we're going to use the Align panel to make sure that these two boxes are actually matched up, in terms of their positioning.
So I'm going to go ahead and select that top box, just by clicking on it. Actually, I'll grab my Pointer tool and select it, and if I hold down the Shift key, and click, I can select the other box below. And again, it's really obvious the Guides and also the little Control Handles you see around the boxes indicate that there's a difference in alignment here. I'm going to go over to my Align panel, which should be open inside of Fireworks. But if it's not, go to the Window menu and look for Align. And all I want to do at this point is just align these two Guides up, based on the right-hand side of the boxes. So I'm just going to go in to my Alignment Options and choose Align right edge.
And just a minor shift occurred to the bottom box, so now they're both lined up exactly on the same left edge, which makes things a little bit cleaner. Now we have in the monthly_specials area, you'll see we've got one of them already set up here. We've got an Icon for the Company and little bit of information about the package, and I've got two other icons that I want to bring in, From Desert to Sea and Backpack Cali, and they're both over inside of my monthly_specials_icons files. And again, I'm going to select one of my graphics, just like so, and I'm going to move this graphic in.
I'm just going to drop it anywhere for the time being. Now once I let go of it and start to reposition it, you'll notice I get these horizontal and vertical Guides, these kind of Red and White or Pink and White Guides. These are what are referred to as Smart Guides, and by default, they are turned on, and what they do is they help you align objects based on the position of other objects on the canvas. So what I want to make sure of is that I make sure that this icon is lined up, not just along the left edge, because I've got a Guide to help us with that, but also in terms of its position with the Text beside it.
So I'm going to try and make sure that that lines up along the middle of the text, so I get that nice horizontal line running through Day 2 Salton Sea, and I just let go over the mouse, and I've got a nice alignment there for that particular icon. I've got one more icon to place. That's my Backpack Cali, so I am going to select that one for my monthly_specials file and drag it over as well. I'll just let go of it, and now once it's inside the canvas, I can, again, start positioning it based on Smart Guides. I'm going to align it over to the left- hand side with the help of the Smart Guides and also my Standard Guides, and I want make sure the logo runs, again, along that vertical center for Big Sur Retreat.
And once I get that lined up the way that, I want is I'll just let go over the mouse, and it's all dropped nicely into place. Smart Guides, are, again, one of those features you have some control over. So if I go up to my View menu, you'll see an Option here for Smart Guides, and right now, by default, Smart Guides are turned on when you install Fireworks, so I've got, Show Smart Guides and Snap to Smart Guides. So not only am I seeing the Guides as I'm moving them around, I'm also able to Snap my objects to those Guides. So it gives me, again, an ability to reposition elements on the screen without having to go into the Align panel, for example.
I have a little more sort of interactive way of positioning my elements, and it's still quite accurate. One last feature I want to show you is something called tooltips. Now you'll see it inside the View menu as well, and currently it's not selected. So if I choose that one and click it, what tooltips gives me is a heads-up display of the actual pixel location of an object that I'm moving around the canvas. So for example, if I grab my Desert to Sea Icon, and start to reposition it, you'll see that I get not just my Smart Guides, but I also see inside a little Gray Bubble there, the actual X and Y coordinates for that specific object.
So not only can I align things with the Smart Guides, and the Guides, I actually get to know, exactly where that element is being placed. Let's see. Let get that guy back in place. Here we are, just like so. All right. So there's the three other Layout Features. We've got the Align panel, we've got the tooltips for showing you Pixel precise locations of your objects, and we've got the Smart Guides to help you align objects based on the position of other objects on the canvas.
