In Fireworks CS5 Essential Training, author Jim Babbage gives a detailed overview of Fireworks CS5, Adobe's software for creating and optimizing web graphics and interactive prototypes. This course includes a detailed tour of the interface, the enhanced PNG format, and the image editing toolset in Fireworks. Critical concepts, such as prototyping for HTML applications and working with symbols, the heart of an efficient workflow in Fireworks, are covered in detail. Exercise files are included with this course.
There are many different ways to optimize your graphics. Really, what it comes down to is deciding which method is the best for you. We're going to take a look at a different option for preparing your files for the Web. That's through our File menu and the Image Preview command. Now, what happens here is you get a brand -new window opening up, which gives you independent control over the currently active file. Your Export Options aren't going to be based on the Optimize panel inside of Fireworks. They are going to be based on what's inside of this particular window. So in the case here, with our logo, it's currently a GIF Format.
We can change that format. Let's switch it over to old PNG 8 that we saw earlier. That gives us a much smaller file. We can set up, in the case of PNG 8 or GIF, the type of palette being used. We can adjust the number of colors in the image. We can also set options, such as Transparency. Now again, in this case, we don't really want any transparency on this image. So we'll just deal with the solid colors. I've got the ability as well inside of this preview window to actually show things in 2-Up or 4-Up view as well.
Now, with big files, this is a little bit challenging. But with a small file like this logo, it's not so bad. So I can go through the same kind of workflow that I was using in the Preview windows inside of Fireworks, and I can change the optimization settings for each individual window. I'm just going to switch back out to my full screen image again. I've also got options for the file itself. I can change the scaling. I can resize the file numerically, or based on a percentage. I can even choose to Export a specific area within the file.
If we were dealing with the GIF image, we can set up options for animating the file if it was a multi-frame animation. The Image Preview Window is also a feature you'll see elsewhere. When you're working with images inside of Dreamweaver, the Image Preview window can be brought up from the Properties Inspector. It'll basically perform in the same manner as you see here inside of Fireworks.
