In Fireworks CS5 Essential Training, author Jim Babbage gives a detailed overview of Fireworks CS5, Adobe's software for creating and optimizing web graphics and interactive prototypes. This course includes a detailed tour of the interface, the enhanced PNG format, and the image editing toolset in Fireworks. Critical concepts, such as prototyping for HTML applications and working with symbols, the heart of an efficient workflow in Fireworks, are covered in detail. Exercise files are included with this course.
We've got a range of features for controlling text. A great deal of them are inside the Properties panel, but we also have some controls that we can use in conjunction with the Properties panel and keyboard and mouse commands. I'm just going to zoom in on my trivia box here a little bit, so I can see this text a little bit better. And if I grab my Pointer tool and select the text block, you'll see we've got a whole range of different options here for controlling the text itself from Color to Size to Alignment. There's quite a few different things we can do. What I want to do is show you some of the type management features that are inside of Fireworks, and these work in conjunction with keyboard and mouse in a great deal of cases.
First, let's take a look at different ways to select text inside of a text block. I've got my Type tool selected and if I double-click, I can select a single word. If I triple-click, I can select that entire paragraph inside the text block. So I can really easily select my text without having to click and drag to make those selections. Now I have another option for text selection, which is kind of neat. I'm going to double-click on one word here. I'm going to hold down my Shift key, and I'm going to click and drag over another word. So I can do multiple text selection with inside of the same text block, which is kind of cool.
I'm going to change those two words to incorporate some bold along it there. So it stands out a little bit better, and I'll click away so we can see that that effect has indeed been put into place. Now one other neat feature for text selection is that you can also select text elements that have similar properties. So if go and hold down my Alt key, my Option key on the Mac and double-click on one of those boldfaced words, both of them get selected at the same time. So I can then go ahead and make more changes.
I could, for example, oh, maybe change the Color. Make them stand out. So just another example of how you can work a little bit faster inside of Fireworks. One other thing I'd like to show you with this is kerning. We've got, again, some controls over how to space and kern our letters between words and between characters. If I go in between specific characters inside of a word, and I hold down the Shift key and the Ctrl key or Shift+ Command on the Mac, I can create spacing by pressing the Arrow key and if I press in the other direction, I can go back to my original spacing.
If I hold down Ctrl+Alt or Command+ Option on the Mac, I can increase the spacing by a factor of one. So you can see, I get much more character level control here. Once I've done that, I can press Ctrl+ Z a couple of times or Command+Z, and I can undo those changes. Go back to my original settings. As well as kerning between letters, I could actually adjust the kerning in the entire paragraph really easily too. So again, if I just triple-click, I grab the entire paragraph and with the same key commands, hold down the Shift key and the Ctrl key, I can increase the spacing between each letter by a factor of 10 if I press the Right Arrow key. If I press the Left Arrow key, I reduce that spacing by a factor of 10 and in much the same manner again, Ctrl+Alt gives me the ability to increase the spacing between every single character by a factor of one.
So I have a lot of very, very specific control for my text throughout the document. As you can see, you've got quite a few pretty sophisticated typographical controls inside of Fireworks to help you manage your text.
