Male 1: So the most important step when using a Follow Focus is setting your marks. And there's 2 places that we're going to actually set our marks. The first place is, that we're going to set our marks is actually on the Follow Focus unit itself, right here on this little dry erase ring. The second place that we need to set our marks in conjunction and how we actually figure out where these marks go, is actually out in the scene. So you can see my mark technician, Rich Harrington, out there in with our talent. And what he's going to do is about every 5 to 10 feet, in this case he's simply going to use a pine cone and he's going to mark.
That point. Now how specific you are in that distance is really going to depend on how far away you are, the lens you're using. So you might need to do a little bit of playing, but I've found that 5 to 10 feet usually works pretty good. So now what we're going to do is have the talent actually walk down to each mark and when the talent arrives at that mark, over here on the camera, we're going to actually make a little mark with my dry erase marker. And what this is going to allow us to do is have repeatable focus points. So when we actually go to shoot this, every five to 10 feet is in perfect sharp focus.
Okay, so let's go ahead and walk to the first mark and when you get there just go ahead and stop. And so Kevin, why don't you go ahead and grab focus there. Male 2: Mark it. Male 1: Right about there. Got it. Okay, now walk to the second mark. Male 2: And mark it. Male 1: Okay, and then walk to the third mark. Male 2: And mark that. Male 1: Perfect. So now, what I have is actually on the Follow Focus dry erase ring here. I have three separate marks. So now, when we actually go to shoot this scene, what Kevin will be able to do or the Follow Focus operator is simply, when the talent gets to that point, place the Follow Focus on to that actual mark and rotate between them as the talent moves.
