IntroductionWelcome| 00:04 | Hi! My name is Justin Seeley and I'm
a staff author here at lynda.com.
| | 00:08 | I'd like to welcome you to Up
and Running with Facebook.
| | 00:11 | This course is meant to give you the basic
tools that you need to get started using Facebook
| | 00:15 | as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
| | 00:18 | We'll begin by walking you through the steps
of creating a new account, including adding
| | 00:21 | a profile picture and setting
up your Facebook timeline.
| | 00:25 | From there, I'll break down some basic
terminology that will help you understand the ins and
| | 00:28 | outs of Facebook as we
continue throughout the course.
| | 00:31 | We will also cover things like building your
Friends list, sending and receiving personal
| | 00:36 | messages, working with Facebook news feeds, and also
how to share things like photos and videos as well.
| | 00:45 | Finally, I'll wrap things up by showing you
how you can access Facebook from anywhere
| | 00:49 | by using your mobile or tablet device.
| | 00:52 | By the end of this course I hope that you'll
have a better understanding of what Facebook
| | 00:55 | is all about and how you can use it
to enhance your online social life.
| | 00:59 | I'm really excited to start
showing you all of this.
| | 01:02 | So if you're ready, let's get
you up and running with Facebook.

1. Getting StartedWhat is Facebook?| 00:00 | You can't go anywhere these days
without hearing the word Facebook.
| | 00:03 | However, many people that have heard of
Facebook still don't know exactly what it is.
| | 00:08 | So what is Facebook?
| | 00:10 | Well, simply put, Facebook is a website that
allows you to connect and interact with people
| | 00:14 | like friends, family, and coworkers.
| | 00:17 | The core of Facebook revolves around sharing.
| | 00:20 | Whether that's sharing a short statement telling
people what you had for breakfast or sharing
| | 00:24 | photos from your wedding day.
| | 00:26 | Facebook allows you to share any and all
aspects of your life in a unique digital way.
| | 00:31 | But it's not just about connecting and
sharing with people you already know. You can use
| | 00:35 | Facebook as a tool for finding like-minded
individuals through things like groups and
| | 00:39 | interacting with your favorite brands and public
figures on their Facebook fan pages as well.
| | 00:44 | For many people their schedules are simply
too hectic to stay in constant contact with
| | 00:48 | friends and family.
| | 00:49 | Facebook provides a quick bird's-eye view
of all of the activity swirling around you
| | 00:54 | and also provides you with tools to pay
closer attention to the people who matter most.
| | 00:59 | Ultimately, Facebook is about connecting you
with the people and information you deem are
| | 01:04 | more important, and helping you stay connected
with them in a variety of different ways and
| | 01:09 | on a variety of different devices as well.

| Setting up your account| 00:00 | You can access Facebook in your web
browser by visiting www.facebook.com.
| | 00:06 | That's facebook.com. And once the page is loaded
you'll be prompted to either Sign In or Sign
| | 00:13 | Up for a new account.
| | 00:15 | I'm going to assume that you're completely new to
Facebook and that we need to set you up with an account.
| | 00:19 | So on the right-hand side you'll see this
section here labeled Sign Up. This is
| | 00:22 | where you enter in all of your personal
information to start your new Facebook account.
| | 00:27 | So let's go ahead and do that now.
| | 00:28 | I'll type in my First Name, my Last Name, my
Email address, and then you have to re-enter
| | 00:35 | your Email address for verification purposes.
| | 00:38 | Next, you'll have to select a Password.
| | 00:41 | Chances are you have a favorite password that
you use, but I'd like to ask you to please
| | 00:45 | you something a little bit more secure, because
as Facebook continues to impede more and more
| | 00:49 | on all the aspects of our digital life it's
important that we protect our information
| | 00:53 | and our accounts from those who
might try to cause us 'digital harm.'
| | 00:57 | My suggestion is to use an alphanumeric password
that incorporates both upper and lower case letters.
| | 01:02 | If you need some help try a service
like strongpasswordgenerator.com.
| | 01:05 | After you've selected your password, go ahead
and type it in, and then underneath that you'll
| | 01:11 | be able to tell Facebook whether
or not you're male or female.
| | 01:14 | You'll also be able to select your Birthday.
| | 01:17 | So you enter in the Month, the
Day, and of course the Year.
| | 01:25 | You may be asking why does Facebook
need me to provide my birthday here?
| | 01:29 | Well, you have to provide your birthday so
that Facebook can ensure the authenticity
| | 01:33 | of your account and also so that it will provide you with
age-appropriate content through ads and other media.
| | 01:39 | Basically, it's a safeguard against showing
anything inappropriate to younger audiences.
| | 01:44 | Once all of your information has been entered,
you can click the green Sign-Up button.
| | 01:49 | Once you click Sign-Up you'll be taken to
this next screen where it takes you through
| | 01:52 | three steps to complete your profile.
| | 01:55 | On the very first screen it
says Step 1 Find your friends.
| | 01:59 | So basically this screen is saying, okay,
based on the email address that you gave me,
| | 02:03 | I'm going to attempt to find people in your
Contact List that you can then add as friends
| | 02:08 | here on Facebook.
| | 02:10 | Now in this case you can use
Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo!
| | 02:13 | or any other type of email service to attempt to
find people that you want to be friends with.
| | 02:18 | But for the sake of this course I'm going
to skip this step, because we're going to
| | 02:22 | devote an entire movie later on to building our
Friends List and finding people that we might know.
| | 02:27 | So in this case I'll just click Skip this
step, Facebook comes up with this fun message
| | 02:31 | that says people who complete this step
usually find up to 20 friends and Facebook is a lot
| | 02:36 | more fun with friends.
| | 02:38 | Are you sure you want to skip this step?
| | 02:40 | For now I'll go ahead and click Skip.
| | 02:42 | If you skip to Step 2 you get to enter in
some of your Profile Information like where
| | 02:46 | you went to high school, where you went to
college, and also who you currently work for.
| | 02:51 | So you can enter this information, where you
went to school and your employer. By entering
| | 02:55 | in this information you're giving Facebook
more chances of finding people that you know.
| | 03:01 | If you happen to skip this step for now
then you'll be taken to the very next step,
| | 03:05 | which is adding your Profile Picture.
| | 03:07 | If you choose to enter this information and
click Save and Continue, you'll be taken to
| | 03:11 | a screen that says something like "Here are
some people that you might know based on the
| | 03:15 | information you just entered here."
| | 03:17 | So if you want to enter in this
information and hit Save and Continue, go ahead.
| | 03:21 | If not, you can click Skip and go directly to the
next section to enter in your Profile Picture.
| | 03:26 | So I'll click Skip, and it takes me here.
| | 03:29 | Now you have two options for taking a
Profile Picture, you can Upload a Photo from your
| | 03:33 | computer or you can Take a Photo using
the built-in web cam if you choose to.
| | 03:37 | In this case I'm just going to Upload a photo.
| | 03:40 | It's going to bring me to this little box
telling me to select an image from my computer.
| | 03:44 | It can only be 4 MB in size, and I'll click
Choose File, and on my desktop inside of my
| | 03:49 | Assets folder there is a me.jpg and I'll hit Open.
| | 03:54 | Once the photo has been uploaded, it will
appear right here on the left, and if you like it
| | 03:58 | you can click Save and Continue.
| | 04:02 | Clicking Save and Continue will take you to
this screen where it welcomes you to Facebook
| | 04:06 | and allows you to start searching your email
list for Friends that are already on Facebook
| | 04:11 | and also using another service
called Find people you may know.
| | 04:14 | We're going to cover both of
these in depth in later movies.
| | 04:18 | You may also notice a yellow bar across the
top of the screen that tells you to go to
| | 04:23 | your email address and
complete the sign-up process.
| | 04:26 | So what you'll need to do is go to your email,
whatever that may be, Gmail or your email
| | 04:30 | client, whatever, and there will be a
confirmation email inside of that and you can click the
| | 04:35 | Activation Link inside of that email to confirm your
Facebook account and you'll be ready to continue on.
| | 04:41 | So jump over into your email, open up that
email account, there should be a link to click
| | 04:45 | on to confirm this.
| | 04:48 | Click on that, confirm it, and then
come right back and continue learning.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Understanding Facebook timeline| 00:00 | One of the terms that you're going to hear
me talk about a lot during this course is
| | 00:03 | something called the Facebook timeline.
| | 00:06 | In this movie I'm going to be exploring the
Facebook timeline and showing you exactly
| | 00:10 | what it is and why it's such a good thing.
| | 00:14 | If you go to facebook.com/about/timeline,
you'll actually be taken to the Facebook timeline
| | 00:19 | page that explains to you
exactly what timeline is.
| | 00:23 | This page is actually really good and has a
lot of videos and information on it, which
| | 00:27 | are great for learning the ins and
outs of the Facebook timeline itself.
| | 00:32 | You'll notice as you start to scroll down
the page that it tells you that the Facebook
| | 00:35 | timeline is a way to tell your life
story in a new kind of social profile.
| | 00:40 | Up until recently Facebook used something
called a Wall and a Profile Page to let you
| | 00:45 | interact with people.
| | 00:46 | Well, now they display everything in sort
of this chronological timeline layout that
| | 00:51 | really showcases events and things that
happen in your life, like when you get a new job,
| | 00:56 | or when you get married, or when you leave a
job, or even when you end a relationship.
| | 01:01 | So Facebook timeline is a chronological
representation of your online lifestyle.
| | 01:06 | So let's scroll down to the page and you can see here
that it explains exactly what your cover photo is.
| | 01:13 | That's the area behind your profile page right
there, and as we continue to scroll down, you
| | 01:18 | can see here that it
indicates what stories are.
| | 01:21 | So stories are the things that pop up on your
timeline such as memorable posts, photos, and
| | 01:26 | life events like getting married or starting a
new job, and this is where you can tell your
| | 01:30 | story from the beginning, to
middle, to all the way up to now.
| | 01:35 | So we scroll down, you can all these examples
of things like when someone became friends
| | 01:39 | with somebody else, when someone was
checking into a certain restaurant,
| | 01:45 | when they liked a new page, or when they
moved or started a new job somewhere, all kinds
| | 01:50 | of things pop up.
| | 01:51 | You'll also see references to apps.
| | 01:54 | Facebook has a lot of
applications that interact with it.
| | 01:58 | So therefore you can see things like when
people watch movies on various services if
| | 02:03 | they use apps to track things like runs or
walks, anything that interfaces with Facebook.
| | 02:09 | If you've seen that little button where it
says Sign In with Facebook on anything like
| | 02:12 | an application or another website, that is an
app that hooks into Facebook and then publishes
| | 02:17 | information to your timeline to show things
like songs that you play, activities that
| | 02:23 | you like, all different types
of stuff can be used here.
| | 02:26 | At the bottom it shows you a
little bit more about the timeline.
| | 02:29 | So it tells you that once you get timeline, you'll
have seven days before anyone else can see it.
| | 02:33 | This gives you a chance to get your timeline looking
the way you want it before other people see it.
| | 02:38 | So this is assuming of course that you have
an old Facebook account and you're wanting
| | 02:42 | to convert it over to the new timeline.
| | 02:44 | When you first set up a Facebook
Account, you've already got timeline.
| | 02:47 | So you don't have to worry about that.
| | 02:49 | You can also decide what to
highlight in your timeline.
| | 02:52 | When we talk about filling that out, I'll
show you how to highlight different things.
| | 02:56 | Highlighting basically means you make a post
bigger or more prominent so that people see
| | 03:00 | that a little bit clearer as opposed
to the other posts in your timeline.
| | 03:04 | You can also through Privacy Controls
control who sees what on your timeline.
| | 03:10 | So if you only want to share a post with a
certain group of people, you can do so.
| | 03:13 | If you want to hide everything
from the world, you can do that.
| | 03:17 | Or if you want to just be as public about
it as you can be and live life on the edge,
| | 03:21 | you can do that as well.
| | 03:23 | So if you want a little bit more explanation
of these sections, you can actually click
| | 03:26 | here on these links at the bottom and they
will take you to those respective sections
| | 03:30 | so you can see those, and you can also watch an
instructional video on how timeline works as well.
| | 03:36 | So this is a great little learning center
and again it's at facebook.com/about/timeline
| | 03:42 | and it's really going to help you understand
what timeline is and how you can use it to
| | 03:47 | display everything that's
going on in your online world.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Filling out your timeline| 00:00 | Once you've confirmed your account via email you'll be
taken to a screen that looks something like this.
| | 00:06 | Once you're on this screen it's time to
start filling out your Facebook timeline.
| | 00:10 | As we discussed in the previous movie the
Facebook timeline is where you put in events
| | 00:15 | and different things that you
want to share with the world.
| | 00:18 | So from this screen or from anywhere on
Facebook you have multiple ways of getting to your
| | 00:22 | personal timeline.
| | 00:23 | You can click this link over here on the left
or you can simply come up here and click this
| | 00:27 | link in the top bar as well.
| | 00:29 | When you hover over, it might say profile, but
that's actually taking you to your timeline page.
| | 00:34 | So let's go ahead and click this link here
on the left and that's going to take me to
| | 00:38 | my timeline and you'll notice here that
it tells me Welcome to Your Timeline.
| | 00:42 | This is your place to collect and share the
photos, experiences, and life events that
| | 00:46 | tell your story on Facebook.
| | 00:48 | It's also telling me to take a brief tour.
| | 00:50 | If you'd like to take a tour of this, you
can click Start Tour, and it's going to talk
| | 00:56 | you about your cover photo, telling you to
start with a photo that basically says something
| | 01:00 | about yourself or gives someone an
idea of what you're all about.
| | 01:05 | So the cover photo needs to be pretty large and
it will go directly behind your profile photo.
| | 01:10 | Once you've read all this, you can click Next.
| | 01:13 | It's going to tell you to add in some of your
basic information like where you work, where
| | 01:16 | you went to school, and where you're from.
| | 01:20 | Then you can tell your story.
| | 01:22 | This means sharing things like status updates, photos,
places you check into, and various life events.
| | 01:28 | We will discuss these later on
in their own individual movies.
| | 01:32 | So for now let's just hit End Tour.
| | 01:36 | Once I click End Tour, it's going to take
me back to my timeline and it gives me the
| | 01:41 | option to add things like cover photos,
visit my about view, or find friends.
| | 01:46 | In this case I am just going to click Close for
now, and I'm going to worry about adding in
| | 01:51 | information into my timeline.
| | 01:53 | So I am going to go first
to Add where you work.
| | 01:56 | So I'll click this and then I am just going to
type out my employer's name. So lynda.com.
| | 02:01 | If your employer has a presence
on Facebook, they might show up.
| | 02:05 | So I'll go ahead and click lynda.com, I'll
add in my position, and in the city right
| | 02:11 | there I'll say that I currently work here.
| | 02:14 | I'll add the year where I
started, which was this year.
| | 02:17 | I can also add the month,
and I'll click Add Work.
| | 02:22 | I am then going to click Add my school.
| | 02:26 | So my high school, so I will search for
Murray High School and I will find the one, Murray
| | 02:30 | High School, Murray Kentucky.
| | 02:32 | If your school doesn't show up, that's okay.
| | 02:34 | You can just type in a name.
| | 02:36 | Then I'll type in Murray, Kentucky, that's
where I am from originally, and class of 2002.
| | 02:43 | Then I will hit Add School. So there it is.
| | 02:48 | I'm born June, 26, 1984, I work at lynda.com,
and I studied at Murray High School, and now
| | 02:55 | finally I'll add my
hometown, where did I grow up?
| | 02:58 | Murray, Kentucky.
| | 03:00 | And where do I currently live?
| | 03:02 | That'll be Ventura, California.
| | 03:05 | And I'll click Add City.
| | 03:07 | Once I do that it says right here all of my
information, born June 26, 1984, works at
| | 03:13 | lynda.com, studied at Murray High
School, I'm from Murray, Kentucky.
| | 03:17 | You'll also notice as I scroll through here that
I have some events that pop up in my timeline.
| | 03:22 | For instance, when I added my profile picture, that's
listed there. My activity, where I changed my residence.
| | 03:29 | I can also see when I joined Facebook.
| | 03:31 | At the bottom you can see when I was born and they have
this nice little baby icon indicating when I was born.
| | 03:36 | So if you wanted to highlight that, which it's
highlighted like this, you could add a photo to this.
| | 03:40 | So maybe one of your baby pictures or something
like that, you could add in just to give people
| | 03:44 | an idea of what happened that day.
| | 03:47 | Let's go back up to the top and let's
click right here on the About section.
| | 03:51 | When I click that, it's going to take me to
the About area where I can edit things like
| | 03:55 | Work and Education.
| | 03:57 | So if I want to edit this to add in where I
went to college for instance, I could click
| | 04:00 | Edit and I could add my college,
Murray State University, there we go.
| | 04:08 | I could add my year.
| | 04:11 | So I'll add my year right there.
| | 04:15 | My Concentration, which is
the same thing as a major.
| | 04:19 | There we go, and I'll click add school.
| | 04:23 | So now there it is.
| | 04:26 | My Living situation, it's got where I
live currently and where I'm from.
| | 04:30 | You could add in any number of places.
| | 04:32 | So if you've moved a few
times, you can add that in.
| | 04:35 | Relationships and Families, so you can add
in stuff like your wife, your brother, your
| | 04:39 | sister, your mother, your
father, anybody like that.
| | 04:42 | So once you start adding people to your
Friends list, you can actually click Edit and you
| | 04:46 | can find people and then relate to them based on your
relationship, like wife, brother, sister et cetera.
| | 04:52 | Let's go back over here to the right,
you can see here my history by year.
| | 04:56 | So 2012 I started working at lynda.com.
| | 04:59 | 2002, I graduated from high school.
| | 05:01 | 1984, I was born.
| | 05:02 | So that sort of gives you some chronological
representation of your life so far. About You.
| | 05:08 | So you can write a little bit about yourself.
| | 05:12 | So here I just put Iam the author of
Up and Running with Facebook for lynda.com.
| | 05:16 | So I'll click Save.
| | 05:17 | There is my little About message.
| | 05:20 | So my basic info, when I was born, whether or
not I'm Male or Female, I can add my Languages
| | 05:28 | as well as other information.
| | 05:30 | So here when I click Edit, I can choose whether
or not to Show my full birthday, Show only
| | 05:36 | month & day, Don't show my
birthday on my timeline.
| | 05:40 | I'm also either Interested In Men or Women,
Relationship Status, you have several options
| | 05:46 | here, Single, In a relationship, Engaged,
Married, It's complicated, In an open relationship,
| | 05:53 | Widowed, Separated, Divorced,
civil union, or domestic partnership.
| | 05:57 | So in this case, I am Married.
| | 05:59 | So it gives you the opportunity here to
add in your spouse, if you choose to.
| | 06:03 | I am not going to do that now, but you could enter in
your spouse, especially if they're on Facebook.
| | 06:07 | That way you can show
everyone that you're married.
| | 06:10 | If you speak more than one
language, you can enter that in here.
| | 06:13 | If you would like to express your religious
beliefs, you can do so from this section here,
| | 06:16 | and of course at the very bottom also provide
you a way to show your political views as well.
| | 06:21 | Now you also notice as you're filling out
things on Facebook that you'll see this little
| | 06:25 | globe icon over here on the right-
hand side with a little arrow next to it.
| | 06:29 | Each and every time you see this, this means
that you have the ability to control who this
| | 06:33 | is being shown to on Facebook.
| | 06:35 | So if you want to tweak who can see
individual pieces of your Facebook timeline, you just
| | 06:41 | click on this and then you can say I want
it to be Public, that means anybody can see
| | 06:46 | it, I want it to be seen only by friends, I
want it to be seen only by me, or I would
| | 06:50 | like to customize who gets to see them.
| | 06:53 | Now we are going to cover how to customize who gets
to see what, a little bit later on this course.
| | 06:58 | But for now I am just going to leave all of
this on public so that if you happen to find
| | 07:01 | this page on Facebook, you could actually
see all of this information that I've entered
| | 07:06 | in into the course.
| | 07:07 | But I understand that not everybody wants to
show everything on their Facebook timeline.
| | 07:12 | So anytime you want to hide something, just
set it to Only Me, or if you only want to show
| | 07:16 | it friends, just set it to Friends, and then
once you're finished with that just hit
| | 07:20 | Save, any changes you make will automatically be
applied to your timeline, and you can continue working.
| | 07:25 | Now you can also edit
your contact information.
| | 07:28 | Now you will notice something
in the email section right here.
| | 07:31 | It's that Facebook has changed your email
from the default email of whatever you entered
| | 07:35 | in when you first started to something
like Justin.seeley.7773@facebook.com.
| | 07:42 | This is technically your
Facebook email address.
| | 07:45 | Everybody gets a Facebook address when you
sign up for a new Facebook account, and basically
| | 07:50 | what this allows people to do, if they send
you an email to this, it will show up
| | 07:53 | in your Facebook messages inbox.
| | 07:56 | So if you'd like to keep
this, you can keep it there.
| | 07:58 | If you'd like to switch it back to
your old email address, hit Edit.
| | 08:03 | Then right here you'll see the Facebook
email and your original email right here.
| | 08:07 | So in order to make this email show over this
one, just come over here to the right, choose
| | 08:13 | Hidden from Timeline and then
here choose Show on Timeline.
| | 08:17 | If you don't want either one of these emails
to be shown, just hit Hide from Timeline on
| | 08:21 | both of them and neither one will be shown.
| | 08:24 | You can also add things like your mobile phone
number or your work number, any of your instant
| | 08:29 | messaging screen names,
| | 08:30 | so if you use AOL Instant
Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo!
| | 08:33 | Messenger, et cetera, you can add those in.
| | 08:35 | You can also add things
like your Twitter name.
| | 08:37 | So if you're on Twitter, you could choose
Twitter right there, and then you could choose
| | 08:41 | the Twitter name, just like that.
| | 08:45 | If you wanted to add in your address, so in
this case I'll just add in the city where
| | 08:49 | I live and the ZIP code.
| | 08:53 | You can also add in any
websites that you might have.
| | 08:57 | So if you do have a website, you can point
people there and then you can click Save.
| | 09:02 | Once you do that the information will be
saved to your timeline, you can see the Address,
| | 09:06 | the Screen Name, and when you hover over it,
you'll see that it takes me to Twitter,
| | 09:12 | and Website takes me to that website.
| | 09:15 | The final piece of this puzzle
is your Favorite Quotations.
| | 09:18 | If you have any favorite
quotations, you can add those in here.
| | 09:21 | So if I click Edit, I can type in something like
that, hit Save, and there is my favorite quote.
| | 09:31 | So once I'm finished with all of this
information, I've essentially finished filling out the
| | 09:36 | main parts of my Facebook timeline.
| | 09:38 | So if I come up here and I click Done Editing,
everything there snaps into place, everywhere
| | 09:44 | else should be completed as well.
| | 09:46 | So I can click my name again and
it takes me back to my timeline.
| | 09:51 | Once I'm back on my timeline, you'll see things
like my university that I've added, my hometown,
| | 09:57 | and if I scroll back through my timeline, you
can see here, here's when I started working
| | 10:00 | at lynda.com, here's when I graduated from
college, here's when I graduated from high
| | 10:05 | school, here's when I was born, et cetera.
| | 10:08 | So as you start to add in these life events
and adding in all this information, you really
| | 10:13 | start to build up a chronological
representation of your life for people to see and get to
| | 10:19 | know you better online here on Facebook.
| | 10:23 | So hopefully by now you have a better
understanding of how to edit your timeline and how to fill
| | 10:27 | out the information on your
timeline here on Facebook.
| | 10:30 | So take the time and fill it out as much as
you can, because the more you fill out here
| | 10:36 | the more people will know about you and the
more people will interact with you and share
| | 10:40 | with you in the future.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding a cover photo| 00:00 | One of the coolest parts of Facebook's new
timeline design is the fact you can add something
| | 00:05 | called a Cover Photo.
| | 00:06 | The Cover Photo is this large photo that lives behind
your profile photo up here at the top of your Profile.
| | 00:12 | And in order to add a Cover Photo all you
have to do is simply click Add Cover Photo,
| | 00:18 | and once you do that it tells you you need to
pick a unique photo from your life to feature
| | 00:21 | at the top of your timeline.
| | 00:23 | It says this is not a space meant
for banner ads or other promotions.
| | 00:26 | Please don't use content that is commercial,
promotional, copyright infringing, or already
| | 00:31 | in use on other people's covers.
| | 00:33 | Basically, it needs to be a unique photograph
that represents something about you. So hit OK.
| | 00:39 | You then can choose from your photos that
you've already uploaded to Facebook, or you can
| | 00:43 | Upload your own photo.
| | 00:44 | In this case we're going to upload a photo.
| | 00:46 | Let's say for instance that
you're interested in classic cars.
| | 00:49 | Well, I'll hit Upload Photo and then inside of my
Assets folder is a classic_car.jpg. I'll open it up.
| | 00:56 | Facebook automatically uploads it for me.
| | 00:58 | I don't have to do anything else.
And then it puts it into place.
| | 01:02 | I can then reposition it by clicking and
dragging, and once I get it right where I want it to
| | 01:07 | be, I'll click Save Changes.
| | 01:10 | When I click Save Changes, Facebook is then
going to crop the photo and place it right
| | 01:14 | there as my Cover Image.
| | 01:17 | So as I scroll down you can see it's got the
full image in there, and if I refresh my timeline,
| | 01:23 | I'll also see a nice little news story about
that telling people that I've updated my Cover
| | 01:29 | Photo, which also invites them to
come and look at it on my profile.
| | 01:34 | So again, the Cover Photo is a great way to
express yourself and give people a little
| | 01:38 | bit more insight into what you're all about.
| | 01:40 | So pick something unique, pick something
that represents you, and pick something fun.
| | 01:44 | This is your space to do with what you want.

2. Learning the LingoFacebook friends explained| 00:00 | In this movie we're going to be
exploring Friends on Facebook.
| | 00:04 | A Friend on Facebook is anybody
that you happen to connect with.
| | 00:07 | When you add someone as a Friend you're
requesting to connect with them, have access to their
| | 00:12 | profile, updates, and everything else.
| | 00:14 | When you accept a Friend Request from someone,
you're allowing someone to connect with you.
| | 00:19 | You can add or accept anyone that you wish.
| | 00:22 | You don't really have to consider them
to be a friend in real life, necessarily.
| | 00:26 | That's the beauty of Facebook.
| | 00:28 | It's in online social community that doesn't
require you to actually know these people
| | 00:32 | outside of this ecosystem.
| | 00:34 | So if you happen to find a celebrity or someone
that you've always admired their work or something
| | 00:39 | like that and you find them on Facebook,
feel free to add them as a friend.
| | 00:43 | They can control whether or
not they accept the request.
| | 00:46 | They could also control what post that you're
allowed to see based on their privacy controls.
| | 00:51 | It's a great way to get access to
people in a non-intrusive way.
| | 00:55 | As we continue through this course I'm going
to give you lots of different ways to find
| | 00:58 | people to interact with on Facebook, including
finding people you may already know, and also
| | 01:03 | ways to interact with
people that you don't know.
| | 01:06 | But for now I just wanted to
explain the concept of what a friend is.
| | 01:10 | You see here on my screen I have
several 'friends' on my Friends page.
| | 01:15 | These people may be people that I work
with, they could be people I'm related to.
| | 01:19 | It doesn't matter who they are, they're all
considered Friends within this ecosystem.
| | 01:24 | I can visit their profile at any time by
clicking their name or simply by hovering over it to
| | 01:28 | see exactly who they are, where they work,
and if we have any Mutual Friends in common.
| | 01:33 | This is a great way of determining your
relationship to these people and the degrees of separation
| | 01:38 | between you and other people.
| | 01:40 | So as you continue to Explore
Facebook try adding some Friends.
| | 01:44 | Don't be afraid to add people as friends.
| | 01:47 | You'll be surprised in this online space how
willing people are to say, "Oh yeah, sure,
| | 01:51 | I know you, therefore I'm
willing to be your friend."
| | 01:54 | Like I said, you don't have to know
these people outside of the ecosystem.
| | 01:58 | It's not as if you're having to invite them over for
dinner every Friday night or something like that.
| | 02:02 | They're merely seeing your posts, you're
seeing their posts, and you're all interacting in
| | 02:06 | one large social environment.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring Facebook groups| 00:00 | In addition to finding people that you already
know on Facebook, you can also find and interact
| | 00:06 | with other like-minded individuals
through something called Facebook Groups.
| | 00:10 | In this movie, I'll be exploring Facebook
Groups, how you can create one, and also how
| | 00:14 | you can join some that already exist.
| | 00:16 | So let's talk about groups.
| | 00:17 | They're found over here on the left, and if
you wanted to create a group all you have
| | 00:21 | to do is click Create Group.
| | 00:23 | When you do that you can create a shared group
for you and some of your friends, like movie
| | 00:27 | night buddies, sports teams, siblings, or book
clubs. Or let's say that we want to create
| | 00:32 | one for this course.
| | 00:34 | So I'll choose Up and Running with Facebook.
| | 00:39 | Members, which people do you
want to add to the group?
| | 00:42 | If I wanted to add John Smith,
I can add him to the group.
| | 00:48 | I could also add some of my
other friends, like my wife.
| | 00:55 | Once I've added these people in, I can also
choose the Privacy options for the group.
| | 00:59 | I'm going to put Open. Anyone can see this
group, who's in it, and what members post.
| | 01:04 | So once I do that, I'll create the group and then
I'll get to choose an icon for the group as well.
| | 01:11 | So in this case I'm going to find an icon
that I think is pretty cool, this little
| | 01:15 | icon here, and I'll hit Okay.
| | 01:19 | That now takes me to the Group page. And it
says, a new feature, Easily see who is in the
| | 01:25 | group, that's this big
timeline of people across the top.
| | 01:27 | So I hit Okay, and there we go.
| | 01:31 | I can post something to the
group, like "Welcome to the group!
| | 01:35 | Let's talk about Facebook,"
and I'll click Post.
| | 01:40 | Now this is only displayed inside of the group
and people can comment on it, like it, reply
| | 01:45 | to it or whatever they want to do.
| | 01:47 | You can also control the About information
for the group, so you can Add a Description,
| | 01:52 | you can send a Message to all of the members,
you can Add People, or Find a Member if you
| | 01:57 | have a lot of members.
| | 01:59 | You can create group Events.
| | 02:00 | So if you're having a meetup or something like
that you can create an event for this group.
| | 02:04 | You can upload Photos for the group.
| | 02:07 | You can also upload Files for the group.
| | 02:09 | So you could actually have a workgroup here on
Facebook and exchange documents with each other.
| | 02:14 | It's pretty neat.
| | 02:16 | I'll go back to the Up and Running with
Facebook group, and I can also do a search up here at
| | 02:21 | the top if I want to find a
group that I want to join.
| | 02:25 | So let's say for instance that I'm
interested in photography. I'll type out photography,
| | 02:30 | and you can see that it gives me
a list of Pages, Apps, et cetera.
| | 02:36 | I can go down here to See more results, and
once I do that I can go down on the left and
| | 02:43 | search for groups.
| | 02:45 | And so here's a Photography group, it has
12,000 members, and so I can join this group
| | 02:52 | because it says Open Group.
| | 02:53 | Any of the groups that say Open,
you're allowed to just go ahead and join.
| | 02:57 | If it's a closed group you'll have to send a request
to join, then someone will have to approve you.
| | 03:02 | If you want to join the group
you simply click Join Group.
| | 03:06 | Once you've joined the group you're able to
see all of the posts, interact with the members,
| | 03:10 | see their events, everything.
| | 03:12 | It's a great way to find other people that
are interested in the same stuff you are and
| | 03:16 | start a conversation.
| | 03:17 | So as you continue to explore Facebook,
check out the Groups feature, and hopefully that
| | 03:21 | will expand your online social life.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring Facebook Chat| 00:00 | A great way to interact with people in real time on
Facebook is to use something called Facebook Chat.
| | 00:06 | Facebook Chat is located in the bottom
right-hand side of your Facebook window.
| | 00:11 | If you're offline, which I currently am, you
can activate Facebook Chat by clicking on
| | 00:15 | it, and you will
automatically be placed online.
| | 00:18 | Any one of your friends who is online currently
will have a green dot next to them, indicating
| | 00:22 | you can then start a
conversation with that person.
| | 00:26 | If the person has a Mobile Phone icon next to
them, that means that they're able to receive
| | 00:30 | messages that you send to
them via their mobile device.
| | 00:34 | They can then choose to go online or simply reply
to you via a message on their mobile device.
| | 00:41 | You can also go to the Chat Options from this
section, turn on and off Chat Sounds, Go Offline
| | 00:48 | or choose Advanced Settings.
| | 00:50 | When you choose Advanced Settings you get to
determine your chat settings for all of Facebook.
| | 00:55 | So you can say, All of your friends see you
except for individual names, Only some friends
| | 01:00 | see me or No one sees me.
| | 01:03 | So it's a way of going incognito.
| | 01:06 | You can hit Save to save
those changes and there you go.
| | 01:09 | At any given time you can look down at the
bottom-right and see how many of your friends
| | 01:12 | are currently online.
| | 01:14 | If you wish to start a conversation, click
the Chat, click the person, type a message,
| | 01:20 | and then simply hit Enter to commit to that.
| | 01:23 | If the person has a web cam-enabled computer
and you have one as well, you can also start
| | 01:28 | a video call with that person as well.
| | 01:30 | If you wish to close a
conversation just click on the X.
| | 01:34 | That closes the conversation
and minimizes the Chat window.
| | 01:37 | Anytime you want to bring it
back, just click and it reappears.
| | 01:43 | Clicking away from the Chat
box will also close it as well.
| | 01:46 | So, the next time you log in to Facebook,
check out the Chat window and see who's online.
| | 01:50 | It's a great way to start a conversation without
actually posting anything on someone's timeline.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| What is a like?| 00:00 | One of the terms that you're going to hear
all the time when people refer to Facebook
| | 00:03 | is the term Like.
| | 00:06 | A Like is a simple way to let your friends know
that you like something that they've posted.
| | 00:11 | It can be an update, a
note, a photo. or whatever.
| | 00:14 | All you have to do is find the item that you
wish to Like, so in this case a Status Update,
| | 00:20 | or a photo, find the Like link
underneath it and then click.
| | 00:26 | You'll notice you get a little
pop up saying, Like this item.
| | 00:29 | When you click Like, it automatically adds a
little thumbs-up, and indicates that You like this.
| | 00:35 | As you start to like things on Facebook, people
would be able to see the things that you like,
| | 00:39 | and they will be aggregated on
your Facebook timeline as well.
| | 00:42 | In addition to liking posts, photos, and
status updates that your friends make, you can also
| | 00:47 | like individual pages of
brands and businesses as well.
| | 00:51 | So let's say for instance that you
found the lynda.com Facebook page.
| | 00:55 | If you want to like lynda.com, you can click the Like
button right here, and now you have Liked lynda.com.
| | 01:02 | So when other people come to the lynda.com page, they
can see how many of their friends like this page.
| | 01:07 | It's a great way of crowd sourcing information
and getting to know who approves of what in
| | 01:12 | the Facebook ecosystem.
| | 01:14 | So as we continue with the course, remember,
Like is a very quick and easy way of giving
| | 01:19 | a thumbs-up to say that you
like something, pretty simple.

3. Building Your Friends ListFinding your friends| 00:00 | One of the pillars of the Facebook experience
is your Friends, finding people who you want
| | 00:06 | to share and interact with online.
| | 00:08 | In this movie, I'm going to be exploring how
to find your friends on Facebook and then
| | 00:11 | how to add them as a Friend going forward.
| | 00:14 | So in order to find Friends you can use this
button right up here at the top-right that
| | 00:18 | says Find Friends, and once you click that
you'll be presented with a bunch of information
| | 00:23 | on how to find people that you might know.
| | 00:26 | Now the first part here is asking you whether
or not you want to upload your email contact
| | 00:29 | list to Facebook.
| | 00:31 | Now I have my reservations about this because
I'm pretty protective over the information
| | 00:35 | that I share online.
| | 00:37 | If you would like to upload your contact list
using one of these services, be my guest.
| | 00:41 | But down here at the bottom there's a section
called Other Tools, and so if you filled out
| | 00:46 | your timeline correctly with your current
workplace, where you went to school etcetera,
| | 00:51 | you can actually find friends by your Coworkers,
Classmates, from College and High School, as
| | 00:56 | well as Friends, Classmates, and
Coworkers all at the same time.
| | 01:00 | So in this case, let's say that I wanted to
find some coworker friends from lynda.com.
| | 01:03 | I'll click on Find Coworkers From lynda.com,
and when I do that it's going to automatically
| | 01:10 | search for people who are
currently employed by lynda.com.
| | 01:14 | And so I can find people
here and add them as friends.
| | 01:20 | After you found a couple of people that you
might want to add as friends and click the
| | 01:24 | Add Friend button, you will see that it says
+1 Friend Request Sent next to their name.
| | 01:30 | As of right now you're not friends
with these folks on Facebook yet.
| | 01:34 | They have to actually
accept your friend request.
| | 01:37 | That's why it's important to invite people to
be friends that you actually know in person,
| | 01:42 | because if they don't know you chances
are they're going to ignore your request.
| | 01:47 | But even after you sent them a friend request,
you are technically what is called subscribed
| | 01:51 | to their updates. Therefore these people, anything they
post publicly to Facebook, you will be able to see.
| | 01:58 | A lot of celebrities are starting to do this,
they're opening up their Facebook profile
| | 02:02 | to subscriptions, so they're not necessarily
going to accept you as a friend where you
| | 02:06 | can send them messages and interact with them
on a one-on-one basis, but you can still see
| | 02:10 | their everyday updates and things that they post
publicly to Facebook, so that's kind of cool.
| | 02:15 | Now in this case I've only searched for
people that are coworkers of mine at lynda.com.
| | 02:19 | I can also search for people from my Hometown,
from my Current City, from my High School
| | 02:24 | or from my College as well.
| | 02:26 | Based on what options you click here,
Facebook will automatically start to add people to
| | 02:30 | this list of potential friends. As you see
people that you want to be friends with, simply
| | 02:35 | click Add Friend out to the right and then
play the waiting game to see whether or not
| | 02:39 | they accept your Friend Request.
| | 02:42 | The final way to find a friend on Facebook
is to simply come up here to the Search bar
| | 02:46 | and try to find that person.
| | 02:49 | So for instance, if I wanted to find somebody
that I work with, that I know, I can simply
| | 02:53 | type in their name.
| | 02:55 | So if I wanted to find Deke McClelland, I
could simply type in 'Deke' and Deke pops up.
| | 03:01 | When you click this link, it takes me to Deke's
Facebook page and I can then click Add Friend
| | 03:07 | to send a request.
| | 03:10 | Once you've done that, you can simply go back
to your profile anytime you want by clicking
| | 03:14 | here, or go back to the Facebook News Feed
by clicking here on the left-hand side.
| | 03:20 | Once you're back inside of the Facebook News
Feed you'll start to see things pop up here
| | 03:24 | as people start to post different things
that have accepted your friend request.
| | 03:29 | If nobody has accepted your friend request
and they are not allowing subscriptions on
| | 03:33 | their timeline, chances are you're
not going to see anything here.
| | 03:37 | In the event that someone accepts your friend
request here on Facebook, you will see a notification
| | 03:42 | at the top like this.
| | 03:44 | Once you see that you'll notice that someone
has accepted your friend request. They'll
| | 03:48 | also invite you to either write on
their Wall or post on their timeline.
| | 03:52 | You can choose See All to see all of the
people who have accepted your friend request, or to
| | 03:56 | close this notification,
simply click this icon here.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Accepting and rejecting friend requests| 00:00 | As you continue to expand your friends list
here on Facebook and also as you continue
| | 00:04 | to fill out your timeline information, you'll
find that other people start to find you, and
| | 00:09 | in this case they may
send you a Friend Request.
| | 00:12 | Now a friend request basically means that
this person wants to be your Friend on Facebook
| | 00:17 | and interact with you, see the things you
post, you see the things they post, and you're
| | 00:21 | able to also send and receive
private messages between one another.
| | 00:25 | When someone sends you a friend request, you
will see a little red icon pop up in the top
| | 00:30 | bar of Facebook that look like this.
| | 00:32 | When you click on this, you'll see any
pending Friend Requests that you might have.
| | 00:36 | So in this case, I have two Friend Requests,
and in order to deal with these, you can either
| | 00:40 | confirm them or you can choose not to
become friends with them right now.
| | 00:45 | If you would like to explore this person's
profile prior to accepting their Friend Request,
| | 00:50 | you can take your mouse and click on their name, and
it will jump directly to that person's timeline.
| | 00:55 | So for instance, if I wanted to see John Smith's
profile, I'll click on it, it takes me to John
| | 01:00 | Smith's page and I can see everything from
his cover photo to all of his information,
| | 01:04 | I can see where he works.
| | 01:06 | Everything about him that he's shared publicly,
including some of his status updates, I can
| | 01:11 | see that from this page.
| | 01:13 | You'll also notice that I have something at
the top that says Respond to Friend Request.
| | 01:17 | So anytime I want to respond to this friend
request, I can simply click here and I can
| | 01:22 | choose to Confirm it or I
can delete the request.
| | 01:25 | So in this case, I'll go ahead and confirm
John as a Friend, and so now, I am friends
| | 01:31 | with John. Anything that he posts, I'll be
able to see in my news feed, and anything I
| | 01:35 | post, he'll be able to see in his news feed
as long as that's public facing information.
| | 01:42 | Now if you have any other Friend Requests that
you might not want to accept, you can go up
| | 01:45 | to this little Friend
Request icon again and see those.
| | 01:49 | If you click Not Now, that's going to automatically
hide the request. If you don't want this person
| | 01:55 | to be able to send you a request ever again,
it asks you here, do you know this person
| | 02:00 | outside of Facebook, and
you can actually say No.
| | 02:04 | Once you click No, this person will not be able to
send you any more friend request from here on out.
| | 02:10 | So once you do that, you can click
away from it and it will go away.
| | 02:14 | Once you've finished accepting or ignoring your
Friend Requests, you can go back to Facebook
| | 02:18 | by clicking on the link in the top
left, and it takes you to your News Feed.
| | 02:23 | Once you get back to the News Feed, you may
also see this suggestion box pop up across
| | 02:27 | the top with various people that you
may or may not know at the very top.
| | 02:33 | So you can close this with a little X, or you
can start to add these people as friends based
| | 02:37 | upon other people that you've added as
friends previously, or any information that you've
| | 02:41 | added to your timeline. Different people
will show up here at different times.
| | 02:46 | So for now I'm just going to close this so
that I don't see it anymore and then I'll
| | 02:49 | look at my News Feed and you can see here,
here's where John changed his picture, here's
| | 02:53 | where John changed his cover photo, and
also when he changed some of his information,
| | 02:58 | when he bought his house, when he got married,
all of these different things John has added
| | 03:03 | to his timeline are now showing up in my
News Feed, because John and I are now friends.
| | 03:09 | So anytime you add a new friend or someone
adds you as a friend, their information is
| | 03:13 | automatically added to this News Feed for
you to be able to see each and every time
| | 03:18 | they post a new public update.
| | 03:21 | So hopefully by now you have a better
understanding of what a Friend Request is and also how to
| | 03:25 | manage that, so that you can curate
your Friends list anyway you see fit.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using "People You May Know"| 00:00 | Another great way to find people that you
want to add as Friends on Facebook is to use
| | 00:04 | a feature called People You May Know.
| | 00:08 | In order to use People You May Know, you need
to be looking at your Facebook News Feed like
| | 00:11 | I'm looking at here, and then on the right-hand
side you'll see a list of people that you
| | 00:15 | may or may not know.
| | 00:17 | If you'd like to see the full list of people, you
simply click See All on the right-hand side.
| | 00:22 | Clicking See All takes you to the people you
may know dashboard, or basically you can go
| | 00:28 | in and curate everybody that you want to see
or not see, and so you can base things off
| | 00:34 | of mutual friends, home town, current city,
high school, college, employer et cetera.
| | 00:39 | Any of these people that you want to add as a
Friend, you simply find them and then simply
| | 00:45 | click Add Friend.
| | 00:46 | So, if we click Add Friend on a couple of
these, we can see now that I have sent them
| | 00:52 | a friend request, and based off information that
I've either entered in my profile, or information
| | 00:58 | based upon who I'm Friends with already, or
information on where I work or went to school,
| | 01:03 | different people will show up here at different
times depending on how much stuff I've actually
| | 01:07 | put into my timeline.
| | 01:09 | So, the next time you're on the Facebook News
Feed page, take a look on that right-hand side
| | 01:13 | to see the People You May Know section.
| | 01:16 | There may be people that pop up there based on
a status update that you put, or a new update
| | 01:20 | that you've added to your timeline.
| | 01:22 | So keep checking that out, and it's a great
way to find extra friends that you might not
| | 01:26 | have realized were on
Facebook in the first place.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Subscribing vs. friending| 00:00 | Up until now we've been talking about how to
add Friends inside of the Facebook ecosystem,
| | 00:05 | but in addition to being able to add Friends,
there's also something called Subscriptions
| | 00:09 | that you're able to do as well.
| | 00:11 | In some cases, people who live a public or
more prominent lifestyle may choose to opt
| | 00:16 | in to Facebook's subscription model, so that they
don't have to deal with all of the impending
| | 00:20 | Friend Requests that come in all the time.
| | 00:23 | A lot of tech pundits and celebrities and
people like that are starting to do this so
| | 00:27 | that you're still connected to their "personal"
account, but you only get to see the information
| | 00:32 | that they publicly post.
| | 00:34 | In order to subscribe to somebody
you'll have to find their profile online.
| | 00:39 | So for instance, this is my actual personal
profile here on Facebook, and over to the right
| | 00:45 | you can see there's two buttons, one to
add me as a Friend and one to Subscribe.
| | 00:50 | If I am not allowing people to add me as a
Friend, this will not be available, but I
| | 00:55 | will allow subscriptions.
| | 00:56 | So, if you wanted to subscribe to the updates
that I post you could simply click this right
| | 01:00 | here, and you are now subscribed to my updates
without having to send me a friend request.
| | 01:06 | This means anything that I post that is
publicly available, you will see in your News Feed.
| | 01:11 | So if I share a photo, you'll see that. If I share
a public status update, you'll see that as well.
| | 01:16 | This eliminates the need for you to ask them
whether or not you can see their updates and
| | 01:21 | just automatically subscribes you to them.
| | 01:24 | Now if you would like to enable subscriptions on
your personal Facebook account, that's actually
| | 01:29 | very easy to do as well. Let's go up here
to this little arrow and click, and we'll go
| | 01:34 | down to Account Settings.
| | 01:37 | Inside of Account Settings, there is a
Subscribers tab on the left. You click on that and you
| | 01:42 | can then choose to Allow Subscribers. You'll
see here that it tells you "Subscribers will
| | 01:46 | receive your public posts and will not be added
as friends, you can have broader conversations
| | 01:51 | about public topics and keep
personal updates only for friends."
| | 01:55 | So, if you wanted to allow this, you could
check that box, and now you are allowing people
| | 02:01 | to subscribe to your profile. This does not
mean you're friends, it does not mean that they're
| | 02:06 | able to send you private messages or
anything like that, but anything you post publicly,
| | 02:10 | they will be able to read that and
interact with it, Like it, et cetera.
| | 02:15 | So, hopefully by now, you have a better
understanding of the differences between adding someone
| | 02:19 | as a Friend and subscribing to that person,,
and also you should now know how to enable
| | 02:24 | subscriptions on your profile as well.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sending and receiving private messages| 00:00 | As you continue to build your Friends list,
you may find the need to send people
| | 00:04 | private messages.
| | 00:05 | This is a conversation that is not publicly
visible, only between you and the person you're
| | 00:10 | sending the message to.
| | 00:12 | There are many ways to send
messages here on Facebook.
| | 00:15 | The easiest way is to click on the
Messages tab on the left hand side.
| | 00:19 | Once you're inside of the Messages tab, you
can click New Message and then simply type
| | 00:23 | in the friend's name. So let say
I wanted to type in John Smith.
| | 00:27 | I can say, "Hi John, how are you today?"
| | 00:31 | I can also attach a file or
a photo to this as well.
| | 00:36 | Right over here on the right, you can see
this gives me the ability to send this to
| | 00:39 | his mobile device if I want to.
| | 00:40 | I'm going to uncheck that because I don't
want to send him a message directly to his
| | 00:44 | phone, just his Facebook
account, then I'll hit Send.
| | 00:48 | Once I do that it starts
what's called a message thread.
| | 00:51 | This message thread is going to show you each
and every piece of the message as it goes.
| | 00:56 | As John responds to me, you'll see that it
pops up in the message thread, and there's
| | 01:01 | also a little green dot next to John's
name indicating that right now he is online.
| | 01:05 | So therefore, I could actually turn this into
a live chat session if I wanted to, by coming
| | 01:10 | down to the chat icon on the bottom right,
expanding it out, and seeing that John is online.
| | 01:16 | There's my conversation, the same
as it is in the message window.
| | 01:19 | If I choose to respond, you can see that not
only does it pop-up here inside the chat window,
| | 01:24 | but it also pops up in the
message thread as well.
| | 01:27 | Anytime you want to close the chat window, just
click the X and the chat window will close.
| | 01:32 | If you don't like the chat window being open
at all, you can click back on it, go to this
| | 01:37 | little gear right here, and say Go Offline.
| | 01:40 | That means that you're no longer in a live
chat session and you're only dealing with
| | 01:43 | the message thread.
| | 01:44 | I find that the message thread is a much more
convenient option for people, and it's also
| | 01:48 | a little less intrusive than that
chat window that keeps popping open.
| | 01:52 | So far, I've sent John a message, he
has replied, and then I replied back.
| | 01:56 | Anytime John responds, you see that it pops
up right there in the thread and I'm able
| | 02:00 | to reply instantly from the box below.
| | 02:04 | Private messages are a great way to have a
conversation with someone on Facebook that
| | 02:07 | is not public facing, so if you don't want to
post a question or comment on their timeline,
| | 02:13 | you can send them a private message like the one
you see here, and you'll be able to communicate
| | 02:17 | with them where only you
and that person can see it.
| | 02:21 | Anytime you're ready to leave the messaging
window, you can simply click back on News
| | 02:25 | Feed on the left, and you return right back
to "regular Facebook" for you to continue
| | 02:30 | browsing and sharing with others.

4. Working with the News FeedPosting status updates| 00:00 | Sharing things on Facebook is one of the
most important things that you can do.
| | 00:05 | This is how you communicate to other people
in a public fashion and also how you start
| | 00:09 | to chronicle your digital life.
| | 00:11 | The most basic form of sharing on Facebook
is something called the Status Update, and
| | 00:16 | in this movie I'll be exploring the basic
ways in which you can update your status.
| | 00:21 | Now a status message could be as simple as
"I'm going to the bank," or it could be as complex
| | 00:26 | as a full blog post.
| | 00:27 | Whatever it is, you can use Facebook to broadcast
your thoughts at any given moment to the world.
| | 00:34 | You'll notice when you're on the News Feed tab that
you have this big status update window at the top.
| | 00:39 | This allows you to say exactly
what it says, What's on your mind?
| | 00:43 | So for instance, if I wanted to type out what
I'm doing right now, I could say, I'm recording
| | 00:48 | a course for lynda.com.
| | 00:52 | You'll also see that I get this pop up indicating I am
allowed to tag other people in this post as well.
| | 00:58 | Now I'm going to be explaining tagging a little
bit later on in another movie, but just know
| | 01:02 | that, let's say that my wife or my cousin or
someone was sitting next to me here, and I
| | 01:06 | had them as a friend on Facebook, I could
actually click this button and add them to
| | 01:10 | this post, indicating that they are indeed with me
in the booth or with me wherever I happen to be.
| | 01:17 | In this case I'm just going to hit OK,
because I don't really want to do that.
| | 01:21 | You'll also notice that it tells me that
I can add a location to my post as well.
| | 01:25 | This is going to base off your current location,
it's going to use various settings via the
| | 01:29 | internet to determine where you are in the world,
and so you can add your current location to this.
| | 01:35 | I'm going to choose Don't
Add my Location for now.
| | 01:38 | You'll also notice that I have the ability
to Control privacy on this post, so right
| | 01:42 | now it's a Public Post, and let me hit Done
so you can actually see what's going on.
| | 01:47 | If I click here, I get Public, Friends, Only
Me, Custom, and then I also have some little
| | 01:53 | lists down here, Close Friends,
Family, and I can go view all of my lists.
| | 01:57 | We'll discuss forming these lists a little
bit later in another movie, but for now, just
| | 02:01 | know that these are extra ways that you
can curate who get to see what on Facebook.
| | 02:06 | For now though, I'm going to
leave this as a Public facing Post.
| | 02:09 | I could restrict it to only my Friends, or let's
say that I'm just leaving a note for myself,
| | 02:13 | I could say Only Me, I'm the only one that's
allowed to see this, but in most cases you're
| | 02:18 | going to want this to be Public, I would think.
| | 02:21 | When you're ready to post the
status update, simply click Post.
| | 02:26 | The people who have added you as a friend or
have subscribed to your profile will automatically
| | 02:30 | see this in their News Feed, and so you can see here
that "I'm recording a course for lynda.com" now shows up.
| | 02:37 | It tells me how long ago I posted this, I can
also, if I was looking at this from someone
| | 02:42 | else's perspective, I could Like it, I could
Comment on it, or I could Re-Share it on my
| | 02:47 | own profile if I wanted to.
| | 02:50 | If you're unhappy with your status update,
you can always click this X right here and
| | 02:55 | the post will be deleted.
| | 02:57 | Facebook will come up and ask you, are you sure
that you want to delete this post. Clicking
| | 03:01 | Delete will remove it from your timeline forever,
clicking Cancel returns you to Facebook and
| | 03:06 | allows you to keep the status message.
| | 03:09 | If you're not on the Facebook News Feed tab,
that's okay, you can still post status updates
| | 03:14 | from a lot of different ways on Facebook.
| | 03:16 | For instance, if I'm viewing my timeline, the
first box on your timeline is always dedicated
| | 03:22 | to Sharing, so this box here, I can post Status
updates, share Photos, check into Places, and
| | 03:27 | add Life Events as well.
| | 03:29 | So if I wanted to add another status update
here, all I have to do is come down, click
| | 03:33 | in the box, and type it out.
| | 03:36 | Once I type that out, I click Post,
and it has been added to my timeline.
| | 03:42 | As I said before, sharing things on Facebook
is the way that you put your ideas out there,
| | 03:47 | and the way that you get conversation
started. It's a social network, so be social.
| | 03:52 | Say what's on your mind, put some things out
there, and see what kind of conversations you
| | 03:56 | come up with.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Working with status comments| 00:00 | As I said in the previous movie, sharing things
is one of the essential parts of Facebook.
| | 00:05 | And when you share status updates, people
have the ability to add comments to those
| | 00:09 | status updates in order to spark conversation
or also give their opinion on your opinion.
| | 00:14 | In this movie we'll be exploring the
comments inside Facebook and how you can work with
| | 00:18 | them, reply to them, and also
manage them a little bit as well.
| | 00:23 | So if someone comments on a Status Update
that you've posted, you will receive an e-mail
| | 00:27 | Notification most likely, and also, if you're
logged into the Facebook site, a Notification
| | 00:31 | right up here on this little globe icon.
| | 00:34 | If you click that, you'll be able to see
whoever has posted the comment, what they said, and
| | 00:40 | when you click on it, you will actually be
taken to the Comment to see all of the threaded
| | 00:45 | comments that are available.
| | 00:46 | So right now I said I'm
recording a course for lynda.com.
| | 00:50 | John has replied with "Awesome!
| | 00:52 | Can't wait to watch it... What's it about?"
| | 00:54 | If I want to reply to John, I can say,
"I'm teaching people how to use Facebook."
| | 01:00 | In order to commit to this,
simply press Enter on your keyboard.
| | 01:04 | When you do that, you've now
posted a comment to his comment.
| | 01:09 | John will receive a notification telling him that
Justin Seeley has also commented on his status.
| | 01:14 | And he will be able to see
that and view it as well.
| | 01:17 | If John wants to make a reply, he can do so, and
then it will pop up immediately, just like this.
| | 01:24 | So as is the case with Private messages, you
get a threaded conversation of everything
| | 01:28 | that's being posted.
| | 01:29 | However, the difference between a status
comment and a private conversation is just that.
| | 01:35 | Status comments are all public facing, anybody
who is my friend or who is subscribed to this
| | 01:39 | post can see these updates and
these comments as they come through.
| | 01:44 | If it was a Private message, that would all
stay between just me and whomever I'm messaging.
| | 01:50 | In order to personalize the comments that
you post, you can also use something called
| | 01:54 | tagging to make it a little bit more personal.
| | 01:57 | So if I wanted to direct a reply right at
John, all I would have to do is type the at
| | 02:01 | (@) symbol on my keyboard, start typing out
John's name, and then select it, and then I
| | 02:08 | could say, "I hope you enjoy the course."
| | 02:11 | When I press Enter, you can see there that
it links directly to John's profile, enabling
| | 02:17 | whoever is looking at this to
click on it and go to John's profile.
| | 02:20 | But it also sends John a Notification letting him
know that I have mentioned him in my comment.
| | 02:28 | If John replies and tags me in a Post,
you will also see that appear here as well.
| | 02:32 | And I'll get a notification saying
John mentioned me in a comment.
| | 02:36 | This is a great way to personalize
replies, especially in a crowded thread.
| | 02:41 | So if you have 10 or 20 people replying to
comments, it tends to get a little bit hectic.
| | 02:46 | So using this little tagging system is a
great way to easily reply to a specific person,
| | 02:51 | while still keeping the
conversation going in the public forum.
| | 02:56 | As is the case with any public forum, there
may come a time when you need to edit or modify
| | 03:01 | a comment that you've
posted in your comments thread.
| | 03:05 | If at anytime you need to do that, you can
hover over the comment, and find this little
| | 03:08 | pencil icon, and click it.
| | 03:11 | When you click that you have the
ability to Edit or Delete the comment.
| | 03:14 | If you choose to Edit the comment, you can
actually just add something to the end of it.
| | 03:19 | When you press Enter the
comment is then edited.
| | 03:22 | You will also see a link appears
underneath where it says Edited.
| | 03:26 | If you want to see the Edit History, you can
click that and it will actually show you what
| | 03:31 | the comment said originally
and what the comment now says.
| | 03:35 | You can then Close it and continue.
| | 03:38 | If you need to remove a comment that someone has
posted, you can hover over that comment and remove it.
| | 03:45 | When you remove that comment, Facebook
tells you the comment has been removed.
| | 03:48 | You can undo this, report the comment as
abusive, or block John Smith altogether.
| | 03:54 | You may also give John Smith some feedback.
| | 03:58 | In this case I'm going to undo
this to bring the comment back.
| | 04:01 | When I undo it, the comment comes right
back as if it were never deleted before.
| | 04:06 | Hopefully by now you have a better
understanding of what comments are, how to use them, how
| | 04:10 | to reply to them, and also how to
moderate them should the need arise.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Liking and sharing status updates| 00:00 | As you're browsing your Facebook News Feed,
you may find status updates and items that
| | 00:04 | you wish to express an opinion on.
| | 00:06 | In which case, you'll need to learn how
to Like, Comment, and Share those updates.
| | 00:11 | For instance, if I want to reply to John
Smith's update saying that he just got promoted, I
| | 00:18 | could do it in one of three ways.
| | 00:19 | I can Like this item, which essentially gives
my stamp of approval to it in a public fashion.
| | 00:25 | I could also add a comment to it, or I could
reshare it on my timeline with a comment as well.
| | 00:31 | Let's take a look at how all three of
these work and how they're different.
| | 00:35 | If I click Like, basically it just adds me
as someone who likes this status update.
| | 00:41 | I could also Comment on it as well.
| | 00:43 | If I click Comment, it just simply puts a
blinking cursor in the Comment box right here
| | 00:48 | and allows me to write something.
| | 00:50 | So if I say "Congrats John!"
| | 00:53 | And press Enter, I have now
commented on this status update.
| | 00:57 | I can then also Share this, so if click Share,
it asked me where I want to share it to?
| | 01:03 | In this case I want to share it to my own
timeline, and I can say "My friend John finally
| | 01:10 | got his promotion!"
| | 01:12 | And I can Share this Status.
| | 01:14 | Once I do that I'll click Close and I'll go back
to my timeline, and if I look in my timeline,
| | 01:21 | I'll see here, Justin Seeley
shared John Smith's status.
| | 01:25 | My friend John finally got his promotion!
| | 01:27 | And underneath there is his
quoted status update right there.
| | 01:31 | If I want to return back to the News Feed,
I'll just click Facebook in the top left corner,
| | 01:35 | it takes me right back.
| | 01:37 | There is my latest Share that I just had
right there, and I can Comment on this, Like it,
| | 01:41 | or Share it as well.
| | 01:44 | So as you continue to browse things inside
of your Facebook News Feed, things that you
| | 01:47 | might just want to give a quick thumbs-up
to, just click the Like button.
| | 01:51 | Things you might want to reply to or give
your opinion on, you probably want to leave
| | 01:55 | a comment on those status updates.
| | 01:57 | And sharing is a way of
basically spreading the word.
| | 02:01 | So as you continue to browse, use all three
of these in their own unique way and you'll
| | 02:06 | be well on your way to
becoming a Facebook social butterfly.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Sorting your news feed| 00:00 | As you continue to build your Friends list
here on Facebook, you're going to see that
| | 00:04 | your news feed tends to
get a little bit crowded.
| | 00:06 | As more and more people use Facebook on a
daily basis and the more people you add to
| | 00:10 | your personal friends list, the more information you're
going to be inundated with your inside this news feed.
| | 00:16 | What we need to be able to do is sort through
some of the noise and find only the most important
| | 00:21 | things that we want to view
inside of our news feed.
| | 00:25 | In order to do that, we're going to make use
of a couple of different things, such as the
| | 00:28 | automatic sorting
features, and also Friends lists.
| | 00:32 | The first way to sort your news feed is to
come right up here to little tab that says
| | 00:35 | Sort, and when you click on this, you'll be able to
see only the Top Stories or the Most Recent Stories.
| | 00:42 | So Top Stories is based on what Facebook deems to be
the top stories, the things that are most important.
| | 00:48 | This could be things that are getting more
traffic, these could be things that are getting
| | 00:50 | a lot of replies, a lot of likes and things
like that, or it could simply be the most
| | 00:55 | important people, the
people you interact with most.
| | 00:58 | You could also switch
this to be the Most Recent.
| | 01:00 | By switching to Most Recent you will see the
chronological order of the post as they come in.
| | 01:06 | If you don't like this and you want to
continue using Facebook's algorithm, all you have to
| | 01:10 | do is switch that back at anytime to Top Stories.
| | 01:14 | In addition to using the sorting feature
you can also use this Friends tab over here.
| | 01:20 | Friends tab automatically uses
something called Close Friends.
| | 01:23 | If you click on this, it comes in and it
brings you to Introducing Close Friends.
| | 01:28 | You can add your best friends to this list
to see their photos and news in one place.
| | 01:33 | This is an optional feature, but it's a great
way to add the most important people in your
| | 01:38 | life to one central location where you can
instantly view what's going on with them.
| | 01:43 | So if you hit Okay, that's going to take you
to this page and then you can come right over
| | 01:48 | here and start adding friends to this list.
| | 01:51 | So if I wanted to add a friend to this list,
for instance John Smith, I'll click that and
| | 01:57 | his news automatically pops in.
| | 01:59 | If I want to add someone else like James Fritz, I
can add him in and his updates will automatically
| | 02:05 | start coming in as well.
| | 02:07 | As I scroll down through here you'll see
that the updates that pop in correspond to the
| | 02:12 | people in my list.
| | 02:14 | So there is something that
James posted earlier today.
| | 02:17 | So any time I want to see the Close Friends
list I simply come over to left, click on that,
| | 02:22 | and all of the people I've deemed to be
most important get shown on this list.
| | 02:27 | I can also curate a Family list.
| | 02:29 | This is going to be anybody who I've actually said
is my mother, my wife, my brother, et cetera.
| | 02:34 | Those will automatically be
added to your Family list.
| | 02:37 | And if you've added any work-related information, you can
see other people who have the same employer as you.
| | 02:44 | So if I click lynda.com, you can see other
people who work for lynda.com, which happens
| | 02:48 | to be John, and of course James, and
then my friend David Franz as well.
| | 02:54 | Using these sorting options is a great way
to break through the noise, because you're
| | 02:59 | going to be adding a lot of friends.
| | 03:01 | It may not be people that you interact with on a
daily basis, and it may be some people that
| | 03:05 | you really just don't care what they have to
say at any given time throughout the day.
| | 03:09 | So this is a great way to, like I said, break
through the noise and get only the most important
| | 03:14 | information as quickly as possible.

| Hiding things from your news feed| 00:00 | Sometimes the Facebook News Feed can be sort
of the Wild Wild West in terms of what people
| | 00:05 | are posting on it.
| | 00:06 | You never know what people are going to say or
what types of photos they are going to be sharing.
| | 00:10 | And there may be some things that come
across that you may not want to see.
| | 00:14 | So in this movie I'm going to show you how
to actually remove items from your Facebook
| | 00:18 | News Feed that you don't want to see anymore.
| | 00:21 | If I find in my News Feed something that
really I don't care to see, I can simply hide that
| | 00:25 | from my News Feed at any time.
| | 00:27 | For instance, I'm not real interested
that John changed his profile picture.
| | 00:31 | So I can come up here and click this little
icon here, and I can choose hide the story,
| | 00:36 | report story a spam.
| | 00:38 | I can also change the way I subscribe to John.
| | 00:41 | So if I want to see all of his
updates, I remain checked like this.
| | 00:44 | If want to see most of the updates, I check
here, and if I want to see only the important
| | 00:49 | stuff, big life-changing
events, et cetera, I choose that.
| | 00:53 | I can also choose to unsubscribe from John.
| | 00:56 | If I unsubscribe from John that means I am no
longer going to see his activity in my News Feed.
| | 01:00 | We're still Friends, I can still send him
a message, but I just won't see all of his
| | 01:05 | stuff coming into my News Feed.
| | 01:07 | If you don't want to take that extreme where
you unsubscribe from them totally, you can
| | 01:11 | use one of these filters here, or you could
simply hide the story that you don't want to see.
| | 01:16 | By choosing Hide story, that story is
automatically hidden from your timeline.
| | 01:21 | And it tells you the story is
now hidden from your News Feed.
| | 01:23 | You can unhide it at any time or you can
change what updates you get from John.
| | 01:28 | So again, you get to determine
Most Updates, Only Important.
| | 01:32 | You can also choose whether or not you want
to see Life Events, Status, Photos, et cetera.
| | 01:36 | And at the very bottom you'll see Unsubscribe.
| | 01:41 | If someone is posting things in your News
Feed that you don't find to be relevant or
| | 01:44 | that you just simply don't like, now you know
how to hide those or simply unsubscribe from
| | 01:49 | that person so that you no
longer have to see that in your feed.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Asking questions| 00:00 | So far in this chapter we've covered the basics
of sharing, like adding a status update, replying
| | 00:05 | with comments, sharing things,
liking things, et cetera.
| | 00:09 | In this movie I'm going to be exploring another
way that you can interact with people on Facebook
| | 00:14 | by asking a question.
| | 00:16 | This is sort of like adding your
own poll to the Facebook system.
| | 00:20 | In order to do this you'll need to find one
of the Status Update areas, either at the
| | 00:23 | top of your News Feed or on the left-
hand side of your personal timeline.
| | 00:28 | Once you find that you should be able to see Update
Status, Add Photo or Video, and also Ask Question.
| | 00:34 | If you click Ask Question, you'll see that
Facebook changes, where it says "Ask something…"
| | 00:38 | instead of saying "What's on your mind?"
| | 00:40 | And so in this case, I could
type out a poll question.
| | 00:43 | What's your favorite color?
| | 00:45 | I could allow people to open-endedly
reply, or I can add poll options.
| | 00:50 | So in this case I'll do Red,
Green, Blue, and Orange.
| | 00:56 | And if I wanted to give them another option,
I'll just choose Other, here we go.
| | 01:01 | I'm going to uncheck this; Allow anyone to add
options, because if I'd leave this checked,
| | 01:05 | anybody can add their own color.
| | 01:07 | I want them to pick
between these options here.
| | 01:09 | I'll make sure this is set to Public, because
I want everybody to be able to respond, and
| | 01:13 | then I'll click Post.
| | 01:15 | Once I've clicked Post, it automatically shows
my question there and as people respond, as
| | 01:20 | you can see, John has already responded here, I can
see how many votes each one of these options gets.
| | 01:26 | So right now I have one vote
for red, none for green or blue.
| | 01:31 | If I expand this out I can see all of the
options and the corresponding votes to each one.
| | 01:35 | So right now John is the only one that has
responded, but red is my most popular option.
| | 01:41 | If I want to close this box, I just click the
Close button in the top right-hand corner.
| | 01:45 | So the next time you need to get someone's
opinion on something, whether it would be
| | 01:49 | what type of wedding cake should you buy,
what type of tuxedo you should rent, or what
| | 01:54 | car should I buy, try using the Facebook Ask
Question feature to crowdsource the information
| | 02:00 | that you're looking for.

5. Posting Photos and VideosUploading photos to Facebook| 00:00 | One the most fun and visual ways of
sharing things on Facebook is to post a photo.
| | 00:05 | In this movie I'll be showing you how to upload
individual photographs to your Facebook timeline.
| | 00:10 | In order to do this from your Facebook timeline page
you just simply click on the photo icon right there.
| | 00:17 | Once you click on that you have the option
to upload a photo or video from your hard
| | 00:21 | drive, use a webcam, which means you're going
to take a picture with a camera that's attached
| | 00:26 | to your computer, or you can create a new
photo album in which you upload photos to.
| | 00:32 | We're going to create our own album a
little bit later on in this course.
| | 00:35 | For now I just want to show you how to
upload a single photograph to your timeline.
| | 00:39 | So let's go back over to Upload Photos/Video.
| | 00:43 | Once I do that it's going to ask
me to say something about this.
| | 00:45 | Well, I haven't exactly chosen the photograph
yet, so it's very hard for me to say something
| | 00:49 | about this photo since I
haven't chosen it yet.
| | 00:52 | So let's go ahead and do that first.
| | 00:53 | I'll click Choose File. On my Desktop inside
of a folder called Assets I have a photos
| | 00:58 | folder, and inside of that I
have several random photographs.
| | 01:01 | So I'm just going to pick this
photo called doggyback, and hit Open.
| | 01:05 | Then I'm going to say something about it.
| | 01:07 | So this is obviously a little dog
piggybacking on top of a big dog.
| | 01:10 | So I'm going to say, I thought this was
cute, thought I'd share it with you guys.
| | 01:17 | So now, once you've typed out your description,
chosen the file, you also have the option
| | 01:22 | to tag people if you want to. That means
indicate that they're with you at this given time.
| | 01:27 | You can also add a year to this by clicking
on this little clock icon, and you can add
| | 01:33 | a location information to it as well.
| | 01:36 | In this case I'm not
going to add any of those.
| | 01:37 | I'm just going to upload the photo.
| | 01:39 | So I'll click Post. And after I click Post,
Facebook uploads this to their server and
| | 01:45 | then displays it on my Timeline.
| | 01:48 | Once you have your photo uploaded you should
see your description above it and the photo
| | 01:51 | right here, but this is not the full photo.
| | 01:54 | If you want to see the full
photograph, click on it.
| | 01:57 | This takes you into what's called a lightbox
view, and a lightbox view gives you a full
| | 02:01 | view of the photograph, as well as your
description over here on the right and any comments that
| | 02:06 | might be associated with this photo.
| | 02:08 | Nobody has commented on it yet.
| | 02:10 | So I don't see anything over here yet.
| | 02:12 | You also have the ability to tag the photo, to
add people that might be in the photograph,
| | 02:17 | you can add a location, and you
can edit the photograph as well.
| | 02:21 | If this photograph is not big enough for you,
you can actually come right up here and enter
| | 02:25 | what's called full-screen mode.
| | 02:27 | By clicking on this you enter into a
full-screen preview of the photo itself.
| | 02:32 | This gives you just a single-shot view of
only the photograph with no other distracting
| | 02:36 | things around you.
| | 02:38 | It tells you at the top that
facebook.com is now full-screen.
| | 02:41 | If you want to allow it, click Allow, and you
can keep working, or you can Exit Full Screen
| | 02:47 | and it takes you right back to
your normal working environment.
| | 02:50 | If you wish to exit lightbox view, click the
little X in the top-right corner or simply
| | 02:54 | press the Escape key on your keyboard.
| | 02:57 | That takes you right back into Facebook.
| | 03:00 | Let's upload one more photo to
make sure we've got it right.
| | 03:03 | I will back up here to my Status section,
click on Photo again, Upload Photo, I'll choose
| | 03:10 | a file, go to my photos folder, this time
I'm going to pick kids_swim, open that up,
| | 03:18 | and we'll just type out, "They're having
way too much fun!" And I'll click Post.
| | 03:26 | Once I click Post the
photograph appears on my timeline.
| | 03:29 | If I click it, I enter into the lightbox mode.
| | 03:33 | If I want to cycle through the photos that
are posting to my profile I can click Next
| | 03:38 | and it switches to the dog photo,
clicking this switches back.
| | 03:40 | So you actually have navigation controls throughout
all of your photographs that you upload to Facebook.
| | 03:46 | Again, if you wanted to tag people
this is where the tagging happens.
| | 03:50 | If you wanted to add location information,
for instance if I wanted to add a location
| | 03:53 | to this, I could say Orlando, Florida.
| | 03:57 | Let's say this was taken at a pool in
Orlando. And I'll hit Done Editing.
| | 04:02 | So now, They're having way too much
fun - in Orlando, Florida. Pretty cool.
| | 04:08 | If I click the X in the top-right corner
or hit the Escape key, it takes me out and
| | 04:12 | back to my Facebook timeline.
| | 04:15 | So now that we know how to upload single
photos to our Facebook timeline, let's explore how
| | 04:20 | we can then take these photos and group them
into albums that we create in Facebook as well.
| | 04:26 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Creating and managing photo albums| 00:00 | In addition to uploading single photographs
to your Facebook timeline, you also have the
| | 00:04 | ability to create and
manage photo albums as well.
| | 00:08 | This allows you to aggregate photos into
individual groups that you can then explain and annotate
| | 00:13 | in any way you see fit.
| | 00:14 | Let's go ahead and take a
look at how to do that now.
| | 00:17 | I'll scroll down on my timeline page to the
area where we normally enter in a status update.
| | 00:22 | I'll click Photo and then on that far right-hand side
of the Photo section I'll click Create Photo Album.
| | 00:29 | Once I do that it will take me onto my computer
where I then have to select files to upload.
| | 00:34 | So I'm going to go to Desktop, go to my Assets
folder, inside photos, and I'm going to find
| | 00:40 | a folder called vacation, then I'll simply select
all of the photos inside of there and hit Open.
| | 00:46 | As you can see, Facebook is now going through
and finding each individual picture, uploading
| | 00:50 | it, and allowing me to put
descriptions with each one of them.
| | 00:55 | As the photos come in, if they have any
copyright information or metadata associated with them
| | 00:59 | you will see that up here in the
description fields underneath.
| | 01:04 | If you want to tag, add a year or a location
to any of these photographs, you simply click
| | 01:09 | the icons on the bottom of each one.
| | 01:12 | So this one tags a person, this one adds a
year to the photo, and this one adds a location.
| | 01:18 | Once you've finished uploading your photos
you can go down at the bottom and you can
| | 01:21 | choose whether or not to add more, click High Quality
to ensure that these are the highest quality photos.
| | 01:27 | I'll click that to turn this on, then you
can determine the visibility, whether or not
| | 01:31 | it's Public, Only Friends, Only Me, or Custom.
In this case I'm going to leave it on Public.
| | 01:38 | And then finally when you're
finished, click Post Photos.
| | 01:43 | When you click Post Photos, it
creates the album for you.
| | 01:46 | You can see here that it's actually
called Untitled Album at the moment.
| | 01:50 | If I want to change that, I can click Edit
Album, and here at the top I can give it a
| | 01:55 | name. Underneath that you can give it a description,
"These are photos I've taken while on vacation."
| | 02:02 | You can say where these photos were taken.
| | 02:04 | You can edit the date, add
more photos, or delete the album.
| | 02:08 | In this case I don't want to delete
the album. I just want to click Done.
| | 02:13 | Once I click Done it takes me to My Vacation
Photos, at the bottom there's my description,
| | 02:18 | These are photos I've taken while on vacation.
| | 02:21 | And if I want to I could click any one of
these photos and it enters into Lightbox Mode.
| | 02:26 | I can then cycle through the album by clicking
the navigational buttons on the right-hand side.
| | 02:32 | I can hit Escape to get out at any time.
| | 02:35 | If you're not happy with the order in which
the photos are displayed, move your mouse
| | 02:39 | over any one of the photographs and then simply
click and drag to reposition it in the order.
| | 02:45 | So if I wanted this picture to be
first, click, drag it over, and drop it.
| | 02:50 | You can rearrange these in any way you want.
| | 02:52 | By rearranging them, that's the order
they will appear in inside of the lightbox mode, so
| | 02:57 | if I were to click this photo here, it is now
the first in this set and it will be followed
| | 03:01 | by the rest in the same
order in which I arrange them.
| | 03:05 | Hitting Escape takes me out and
allows me to go back to my album.
| | 03:10 | If I want to go back to my Facebook timeline I
simply click my name right here and it takes
| | 03:15 | me back to Facebook.
| | 03:18 | If I want to create another photo album, I
just come back down, click Photo again, create
| | 03:22 | another album. This time I'll select wedding,
and I'll grab all of the photos inside of
| | 03:28 | there and open them.
| | 03:30 | Again, Facebook's going to go through
and upload each one of these photos.
| | 03:35 | I can give it a name here at the top, I can
also give it a description, I could add where
| | 03:41 | these were taken, I could also add a date.
| | 03:44 | At the bottom I want to make
sure High Quality is checked.
| | 03:47 | You'll notice when I hover over this it says
it stores larger images with this, that means
| | 03:51 | that you're just going to get
Higher Quality, larger files.
| | 03:54 | It does say that this is a slower process,
so if you're on a slower Internet connection
| | 03:58 | it may take a little bit longer if you
have the High Quality option checked.
| | 04:02 | But by checking High Quality you ensure that you get
the best quality photographs for everyone to see.
| | 04:07 | So I recommend having that checked on.
| | 04:09 | Then finally when I'm
finished I'll post the photos.
| | 04:13 | If you upload photographs in which Facebook
detects that there's a face, they will automatically
| | 04:17 | prompt you to tag the people
that are in these photographs.
| | 04:20 | If you don't want to tag people in your
photographs you can choose Skip Tagging Friends.
| | 04:25 | If you want to tag people
just start typing their name.
| | 04:29 | If they're already on your friends list
you'll be able to tag them really easy.
| | 04:33 | We'll cover tagging in its own specific movie
a little bit later, so for now I'm just going
| | 04:37 | to click Skip Tagging Friends.
| | 04:40 | Once I do that, the photos appear, and I can
then rearrange them any way I want, and once
| | 04:46 | I let go of the last photo, they're going to
stay in that order and if I want to return
| | 04:50 | back to my Facebook timeline I can click my
name, or if I want to see all of my photo albums
| | 04:55 | I can click Albums.
| | 04:57 | And once I do that you can see there's my
wedding photo album, my vacation photo album.
| | 05:02 | Any photos that you post individually to your
Facebook timeline or your "wall" you'll see
| | 05:08 | those in an aggregated smart album
that Facebook generates automatically.
| | 05:13 | Also another smart album is your Cover
Photos album, any photos that you upload as your
| | 05:16 | cover photo will be stored here. And then
finally, your profile picture also gets an album.
| | 05:21 | So each time you change your profile
picture, that will be located here as well.
| | 05:26 | Now let's go back to my
timeline by clicking my name.
| | 05:29 | And so hopefully by now we have a better
understanding of what photo albums are and how we can create
| | 05:35 | them, and also how we can manage the photographs
that we upload into our photo albums so that
| | 05:39 | we can share multiple photos at
a single time here on Facebook.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Tagging photos| 00:00 | Previously in this chapter we've talked about
the idea of tagging people in your photos.
| | 00:05 | And in this movie we're going to be
exploring tagging and how you can actually apply it
| | 00:09 | to a photograph to tag someone that you
might want to include as part of the photograph
| | 00:14 | that you're uploading.
| | 00:15 | So the first thing I need to do is
upload a photo that I want to tag.
| | 00:18 | So I'm going to click Add Photo/Video from
right here at the top, and I'll choose Upload
| | 00:23 | Photo/Video, and in this case I'm going to
choose a file, and I've got a picture of me
| | 00:28 | and my wife, and I'll hit Open.
| | 00:30 | And I'm going to say something about this,
I'll just say, Drew and I last year....
| | 00:36 | And then if I wanted to go ahead
and upload the photo I could.
| | 00:40 | So I'll click Post and it posts the photo.
| | 00:43 | If I click on the photo, I then go into the
lightbox mode, and at the bottom there is
| | 00:48 | the option to tag the photo, you
can also tag the photo from here.
| | 00:51 | By clicking Tag Photo you enable this
little box that pops up to tag people.
| | 00:57 | Right now it's picking up my face and it
assumes that I'm one of the tags, so I'll just go
| | 01:02 | ahead and click myself to tag me, and then also
in my Friends list it gives me people to tag.
| | 01:08 | For the second person it
automatically detects faces.
| | 01:10 | And so I'll type dr for Drew and there's my
wife, so I'll just select her, and now she
| | 01:15 | has been tagged inside of the photo as well.
| | 01:18 | And so once I'm done tagging I can click
Done Tagging here at the bottom or I can click
| | 01:22 | Done Tagging at the top.
| | 01:24 | If I click Done Tagging, it is finished and
now if I hover over this it tells you who
| | 01:30 | this is, and who this is.
| | 01:33 | And if I hit Escape or click the X in
the top-right corner, it takes me out.
| | 01:37 | Now once you've tagged someone in a photograph
they will actually get a notification saying
| | 01:42 | that you have tagged them in a photo.
| | 01:45 | Depending on how they have their privacy settings set
you may or may not be allowed to tag that person.
| | 01:50 | A little bit later on we'll discuss the
privacy options and how you can prevent people from
| | 01:54 | tagging in photographs, and also how you can
make it so that they have to have permission
| | 01:58 | before they can tag you
in photographs as well.
| | 02:02 | Most people don't know that those privacy
controls exist, but I think it's very important
| | 02:06 | that you understand
tagging and exactly what it is.
| | 02:09 | Basically it's simply saying that
you are a part of this photograph.
| | 02:13 | It's a way of including you and being more
social and sharing the whole experience of
| | 02:17 | whatever is going on in your life.
| | 02:19 | So now that you understand how to tag people and
why you would want to tag people, my suggestion
| | 02:24 | is to upload a few photos or go back through
the photographs that you've already uploaded,
| | 02:28 | and start tagging people.
| | 02:30 | This is only going to
enhance your Facebook experience.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Posting videos to Facebook| 00:00 | In addition to adding regular photos to
Facebook you can also add video as well.
| | 00:05 | In this movie, I'll be showing you how to
upload videos to your Facebook timeline and
| | 00:09 | how to work with them once
they've been uploaded to Facebook.
| | 00:12 | In order to add a video, you do
it just like you do a photograph.
| | 00:15 | Anywhere you see the Update Status section,
whether that be in the News Feed or on your
| | 00:18 | Facebook timeline, click Add Photo/Video and
then you have the choice of either uploading
| | 00:23 | a video from your computer or
using a webcam to create a video.
| | 00:27 | In this case, we are just
going to upload a video.
| | 00:29 | By clicking Upload Video, it looks
just like the Photo dialog box.
| | 00:32 | I'll click Choose File, and I'll go
grab a video, and I'll hit Open.
| | 00:38 | And then I can say, "A close
encounter with an airplane…"
| | 00:44 | You can control who's in the video, you can
set a location, and you can also control the
| | 00:49 | visibility, just the same
way you can with a photo.
| | 00:51 | In this case though, I'm
just going to click Post.
| | 00:55 | Once I click Post, it's going to tell you
that by submitting a video to Facebook, you
| | 00:58 | agree to comply with all of Facebook's
Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which among
| | 01:02 | other things means that you agree not to upload
any videos that infringe upon the copyright,
| | 01:07 | publicity, privacy, or other
rights of a third party.
| | 01:12 | Basically what this is telling you is that
you need to make sure you have the rights
| | 01:15 | to whatever video material
you're putting up there.
| | 01:18 | If you agree to this, just simply hit Agree.
| | 01:21 | It's telling you now that Facebook needs to
open a new browser window to upload your video.
| | 01:24 | If that's okay with you, hit Okay.
| | 01:26 | Facebook will then upload your video through
this little window right here and you will
| | 01:30 | have to wait for it to upload, so depending
on the size of your video this could take
| | 01:34 | a substantial amount of time.
| | 01:37 | Once your video is uploaded, you will get a
confirmation message telling you that your
| | 01:40 | upload has been completed.
| | 01:42 | Your video has finished uploading and you
will be notified when it has been processed.
| | 01:46 | You can edit your video if you
want to add a title or tag friends.
| | 01:50 | So basically what this is saying is your video
has been upload to Facebook, it's not ready
| | 01:54 | to view yet, because Facebook does have to
process it to put it in a web friendly format.
| | 01:59 | So I am just going to Close
and Edit the Video for now.
| | 02:02 | It tells me here the video
is currently processing.
| | 02:04 | I can edit the details anyway I want,
and then save it and come back later.
| | 02:09 | Is there anybody in this video?
| | 02:10 | Not really, it's just a video
of an airplane flying overhead.
| | 02:14 | So I'm going to call it Close Encounter.
| | 02:17 | And I don't really know where it was taken,
so I'm not going to add a location.
| | 02:19 | Description, "A close encounter with an
airplane." I'll add "Scary" to the end.
| | 02:26 | Privacy Controls.
| | 02:27 | This sets the visibility of this post.
| | 02:29 | Is it a Public post?
| | 02:31 | Do you only want your Friends to see it?
| | 02:33 | Do you only want yourself to be able to see
it, or do you want to use one of the smart
| | 02:36 | list, like Close Friends or your workplace?
| | 02:38 | It's totally up to you, but in this
case I am going to leave it on Public.
| | 02:42 | Once you are finished with this you hit Save.
| | 02:45 | Hitting Save is going to take you then, if the
video has finished processing, to the video page.
| | 02:51 | You can see here I get a pop-up indicating
that my video is ready to view and I can now
| | 02:55 | watch it or select a thumbnail.
| | 02:58 | So by going here I get to see the
video, and if I click Play, it will play.
| | 03:09 |
[Video]
| | 03:12 | Once the video finishes playing, I can Share
that video by clicking on it, it shares it
| | 03:17 | to my own timeline.
| | 03:19 | I could also Play it Again or I can come down
here to the bottom and I can Tag This Video
| | 03:24 | with people, Change the Date of the video,
Edit This Video, Delete it or get the Embed
| | 03:30 | code to include it on a webpage or blog.
| | 03:33 | In this case, I am going to
go back to Edit This Video.
| | 03:36 | When you get to the Edit Video screen it looks a
little bit different once the video is actually
| | 03:40 | present on the Facebook site.
| | 03:42 | For instance, you get this new section
over here called Choose a Thumbnail.
| | 03:46 | This way you can choose what the thumbnail
of the video looks like, so that when people
| | 03:49 | come to the video page, they
see a different image here.
| | 03:53 | So right now the plane is not really visible,
so I am going to cycle through until it's
| | 03:56 | a little bit closer, and maybe
number 3 is probably the best for this.
| | 04:00 | So once I do that I will
go ahead and click Save.
| | 04:04 | It will take a while for Facebook to update
the thumbnail of the video, so don't worry
| | 04:08 | if it doesn't show up right away.
| | 04:10 | But again, once you click Save, it takes you
back to the video, you can then play it, share
| | 04:14 | it, comment on it, or
whatever you feel like doing.
| | 04:17 | If you wish to return to the Facebook News
Feed, simply click on Facebook, and once
| | 04:22 | you do that you should see your video right
there in the top of the News Feed and also
| | 04:27 | the new thumbnail that you've updated it with.
| | 04:30 | So now that we know how to upload and manage
videos inside of Facebook, we have a whole
| | 04:34 | different way of sharing not just
static photos, but moving photos as well.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Making photos and videos private| 00:00 | There may come a time when you wish to keep
some of the moments that you share on Facebook
| | 00:04 | private, and in that case, you need to know how to
make things appear only to you and nobody else.
| | 00:11 | In this video I'm going to be exploring how
to make photos and videos that you post to
| | 00:15 | Facebook private so that only you can see
them and share them with whomever you choose.
| | 00:20 | So first I need to do is go to my timeline.
| | 00:23 | In order to do that I'll just click
on my name in the top left corner.
| | 00:27 | I'll then go to my Photos right here and that takes
me to all of my photos and videos that I have.
| | 00:33 | If I wish to make something private,
I need to find the photo first.
| | 00:36 | So let's say that I wanted this
picture of my wife and I to be private.
| | 00:39 | I'll click on this album
and then I'll select the photo.
| | 00:43 | Once I have the photo open, I can go to the
Edit button, and that takes me to all of the
| | 00:48 | information about the photo, and I
can then change the visibility of it.
| | 00:52 | Right now it's Public facing.
| | 00:54 | If I wish to make his private, I'll
click down and I'll go down to Only Me.
| | 00:58 | Then I'll click Done Editing.
| | 01:02 | Now this photo is only available to me.
| | 01:05 | Nobody else will be able to see this photo
unless I go back and change the visibility.
| | 01:10 | I can hit Escape or click the X to close out,
and I can do the same thing for my videos.
| | 01:15 | Let's go back to my timeline, I'll click Photos again,
choose Videos, then I'll find the video here.
| | 01:23 | At the bottom of this video you can see
the drop-down menu, and I'll choose Only Me.
| | 01:29 | So now that little lock icon indicates that I am
the only one that's allowed to see this video.
| | 01:34 | I can go back to my timeline at anytime by
clicking on my name, and it takes me back to
| | 01:39 | my timeline like so.
| | 01:41 | Another way to change your privacy settings
for the media that you post is to go to your
| | 01:44 | Account Settings.
| | 01:45 | You can do that from this tab right here,
click, and choose Privacy Settings.
| | 01:50 | We will cover these settings in-depth a little
bit later on, but you can see here that you
| | 01:55 | have several options for how you connect with
people, Timeline and Tagging, Ads, Apps, and
| | 02:00 | Websites, Limit the Audience for Past
Posts, and Blocked People and Apps.
| | 02:06 | So basically, the ones that I'd pay attention
to here are Limit the Audience for Past Posts
| | 02:10 | and Timeline and Tagging.
| | 02:12 | So, Limiting the Audience for Past Posts.
| | 02:15 | When you click on this, this actually limits
the audience of the old posts that you've already
| | 02:20 | posted to Facebook.
| | 02:21 | So if you want every old post that you posted
to Facebook to be specific to one group or
| | 02:26 | completely make it private,
you can do that now.
| | 02:29 | Now it warns you here that if you use this to
content that you've shared on your timeline
| | 02:33 | with Friends of Friends or with the
Public, will change to Only Friends.
| | 02:37 | Basically, this means that anything that
you've been public about so far on Facebook is now
| | 02:43 | going to be limited to only your Friends list.
| | 02:46 | It tells you that you also have the option
to Individually change the audience of your
| | 02:49 | posts by just going to the post you want to
change and choosing a different audience.
| | 02:54 | So this is the one fell swoop approach.
| | 02:56 | If you wanted individually go back and change things,
you can do so like I showed you earlier in this movie.
| | 03:01 | In this case, I'm not going to limit my post.
| | 03:03 | I am just going to click Cancel, but I wanted
to show you that option in case you wanted
| | 03:07 | to go back and do that.
| | 03:09 | You can also edit the
settings for Timeline and Tagging.
| | 03:12 | So if you're concerned about people tagging in
your photographs, you can choose Edit Settings
| | 03:16 | and you can change any of the settings that
are associated with Timeline and Tagging,
| | 03:20 | especially with photographs.
| | 03:22 | Now like said, we'll cover this in
its own specific movie later on.
| | 03:25 | I just wanted to point out
where it is in this movie.
| | 03:28 | So if you needed to control that
right away, you know where to find it.
| | 03:31 | I'll click Done, and now I can go back to my
timeline by clicking my name in the top right
| | 03:37 | and it takes me right back.
| | 03:40 | Anytime you need to change the privacy setting
for a photo or video, simply navigate to the
| | 03:44 | Photo or Video and find the visibility icon,
click it, and change it so that you can control
| | 03:50 | who sees what and when all
the time here on Facebook.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing your profile photo| 00:00 | From time to time you may feel the need to
change your profile photo here on Facebook,
| | 00:04 | and doing so is actually really easy
as long as you know how to do it.
| | 00:09 | From your Facebook timeline, find your
Profile Picture, which is right here, and when you
| | 00:13 | hover over you'll notice that you can edit
the Profile Picture by clicking on this link
| | 00:17 | that appears here.
| | 00:18 | When you click this link, it drops down with
several choices, where you can choose from
| | 00:22 | photos, take a new photo, upload
a photo, or edit the thumbnail.
| | 00:28 | Choosing from Photos allows you to pick a
new profile photo from the photos that you've
| | 00:32 | already uploaded to Facebook.
| | 00:34 | Taking a photo refers to actually taking a
new photograph with a webcam that's attached
| | 00:39 | to your computer.
| | 00:40 | Uploading a photo means you have something
stored on the hard drive of your computer
| | 00:44 | and you want to upload it
to your Facebook profile.
| | 00:47 | Editing the Thumbnail, means that you're changing
the way the small version of your photo appears
| | 00:52 | when you comment or tag
yourself in things on Facebook.
| | 00:56 | Removing it will remove the photo altogether
and make sure that you have no profile photo.
| | 01:01 | In this case, I'm just going to Upload a Photo,
and I'll find a different photograph for me
| | 01:06 | here, and I'll click Open.
| | 01:08 | Facebook is then going to upload that for me,
and that's it, you've now changed your
| | 01:14 | profile photo on Facebook.
| | Collapse this transcript |

6. Adjusting Privacy SettingsAccessing the new privacy shortcuts (NEW)| 00:00 | All right, now it's time to start our
conversation around Facebook privacy.
| | 00:05 | Facebook is constantly changing their privacy policies
| | 00:08 | and the way you access the privacy on their site.
| | 00:11 | However, they have made some strides
to make it little bit easier for you
| | 00:14 | to access the areas of your profile
where you control privacy.
| | 00:17 | And one of those areas is something
known as the privacy shortcuts
| | 00:21 | and that's what I am going to
be talking about in this movie.
| | 00:23 | In order to access the privacy shortcuts,
you are going to go up to the top right-hand corner
| | 00:26 | of the Facebook system and you are going to
look for this little lock icon that you see here.
| | 00:31 | And when you click on that you're going to
notice that three small sections pop up
| | 00:35 | and these three sections are called,
Who can see my stuff?
| | 00:38 | Who can contact me?
| | 00:39 | And how do I stop someone from bothering me?
| | 00:42 | So basically these are shortcuts to different areas
of your privacy controls that enable you to do things
| | 00:46 | like control who your posts are visible by,
control who can send you messages
| | 00:51 | and also to block and restrict users.
| | 00:53 | You can do that all from these
three small shortcut windows here.
| | 00:56 | I am going to be covering each one of these
individually in their own movies,
| | 01:00 | but also understand that you can access all of your
privacy controls by clicking on See more Settings
| | 01:06 | down here at the bottom, that will take
you to the full list of privacy controls.
| | 01:09 | These are not all of the privacy controls
that you have, these are just the main ones
| | 01:13 | that Facebook thinks that you want
to be able to control and you do so
| | 01:16 | from this little shortcut menu here.
| | 01:18 | You may or may not see that little
lock icon right now because Facebook
| | 01:22 | is slowly rolling this out to all users.
| | 01:24 | If you don't see that, that's okay,
just remember that it's going to be there
| | 01:28 | and when you see it, you'll know exactly what it does,
eventually they'll roll this out to everyone.
| | 01:32 | But I just wanted to point out
where these things are, what they do
| | 01:35 | and show you how to access them
so as we talk about it throughout this chapter,
| | 01:39 | you know exactly where I am going
and what I am working with.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adjusting who can see your stuff (NEW)| 00:00 | The first area of Facebook privacy that we are
going to talk about is, Who can see my stuff?
| | 00:04 | Plain and simple this means,
who can see what you post on Facebook.
| | 00:07 | Your photos, your status updates, whatever that
might be, who is allowed to see that information.
| | 00:12 | If you go to the Privacy shortcut icon and
click on that you will have access to the
| | 00:16 | small drop down that says, Who can see my stuff?
| | 00:19 | You can click on that and it will expand
and you have three different choices here.
| | 00:22 | Who can see my future posts?
| | 00:24 | Where can I review all of my posts
and things I'm tagged in?
| | 00:27 | And What do other people see on my timeline?
| | 00:30 | So this first part here actually controls
all of your future posts going forward.
| | 00:35 | Now by default it might be
set to something like Public.
| | 00:38 | It tells you here that remember, this is the
same setting you find right where you post
| | 00:42 | and by changing it here
you've also updated it there.
| | 00:45 | So basically what this means is if I change
this setting to Public and I go over here
| | 00:49 | to type out a Status Update, notice here that
it says Public that's because all of my future
| | 00:54 | posts now adopt this setting that I have chosen
and will reflect that every time I create a post.
| | 01:00 | So if I don't want my updates to be Public,
I will then have to go in and manually change
| | 01:04 | it to one of these other areas.
| | 01:06 | So my recommendation is to set this
in a way that protects you the most.
| | 01:11 | So just go up here, choose Who can see my stuff?
| | 01:14 | And I would suggest setting this to Friends.
| | 01:17 | That way everyone who you become friends with
is now authorized to see your post by default.
| | 01:21 | Anyone who's not your friend will not be
able to see it, it's not a public-facing post.
| | 01:25 | And when we talk about subscribers
a little bit later on in this chapter,
| | 01:29 | you'll learn exactly why this is so important.
| | 01:30 | Now if you don't want to see this every time,
you can just click this little x and it will go away.
| | 01:35 | Now the second option here refers to Where can
I review all of my posts and things that I am tagged in.
| | 01:40 | This is something called your Activity Log
and I am going to be covering this in depth
| | 01:43 | in another movie, but just know that when
you click on this, you will be able to go in
| | 01:46 | and actually look at all of the recent things
you have done on Facebook and you can
| | 01:50 | then decide whether or not that is something
you want to share on your timeline
| | 01:54 | or whether or you want to hide it from your timeline.
| | 01:56 | This is a one-at-a-time approach
to controlling what people see.
| | 02:01 | You can also do something called
What do other people see on my timeline?
| | 02:04 | So you can view your profile as someone.
| | 02:06 | So if I choose View As, it's going to take
me to my profile and this black bar
| | 02:11 | is going to appear across the top.
| | 02:12 | Right now I am viewing this as if I was a
member of the public, so this is what my profile
| | 02:16 | looks like to anyone that just
happens to surf on to my profile.
| | 02:20 | However, if I want to see what this looks
like as one of my friends I will say
| | 02:23 | View as a Specific Person and then
I will enter in that person's name.
| | 02:27 | So I will type out James Fritz
and let's view it as James.
| | 02:32 | So James is able to see pretty much everything
here because James is just one of my friends,
| | 02:35 | I haven't added him to any special list,
I haven't restricted him in anyway
| | 02:38 | so he's able to see all of the posts that I create here.
| | 02:42 | As we continue going through this chapter,
I will show you ways where you can control
| | 02:45 | utilizing different techniques and
different listings so that you can say,
| | 02:49 | okay James is allowed to see some stuff but not all
| | 02:51 | or he is not allowed to see any
but I still want to be friends with him.
| | 02:53 | There is all types of different combinations
and things that you can do to control
| | 02:58 | who can see what on your Facebook profile.
| | 03:00 | But View As is a great way to say okay,
I know I have restricted some people,
| | 03:04 | let's go in and take a look at what my profile
looks like when I'm viewing it as this person.
| | 03:09 | It's a great way just to get a bird's eye view of how
well you're controlling your privacy on Facebook.
| | 03:13 | Now in order to exit this, just click
this little x button right here,
| | 03:16 | it will take you out and it will take you
back to your Facebook profile.
| | 03:19 | If you want to return back to the Facebook
home screen, just click to Facebook logo
| | 03:23 | up here at the top left-hand corner and if
you want access the privacy controls again,
| | 03:26 | you just go right back up there.
| | 03:28 | So in review, we have gone down to
Who can see my stuff?
| | 03:31 | We have controlled all of my future posts
by setting it to friends, we have also talked
| | 03:35 | about what the Activity Log is,
we will explain that in depth in another movie,
| | 03:38 | and we have seen how we can view our profile
as other people by using the View As feature
| | 03:43 | to view your timeline as someone else.
| | 03:46 | So this is the basic ways that you control
Who can see my stuff
| | 03:50 | using the new Facebook privacy controls.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing who can contact you (NEW)| 00:00 | The second piece of the Facebook privacy
puzzle is going to be Who can contact me?
| | 00:04 | If we go up to the Facebook Privacy Shortcut
icon and click on that, there's a small option
| | 00:09 | in the middle here called Who can contact me.
| | 00:11 | There are two basic sections here.
| | 00:13 | Whose messages do I want filtered into my inbox?
| | 00:16 | And Who can send me friend requests?
| | 00:19 | Let's save the message filtering for last
and let's talk about this one right here.
| | 00:22 | Who can send me friend requests?
| | 00:24 | This basically refers to okay, how
am I accepting new friend requests?
| | 00:29 | Am I only accepting it from Friends of Friends
or can someone who just finds me randomly
| | 00:33 | on the Internet send me a friend request.
| | 00:35 | The choices here is Everyone, which is anyone who
finds you on the Internet, and Friends of Friends,
| | 00:40 | meaning that you already have to be connected
to someone on Facebook before someone
| | 00:44 | can you send you a friend request and
they have to be connected to that person.
| | 00:48 | So I recommend changing this to Friends of
Friends because that way you know that
| | 00:52 | at least this person is already connected
to someone you theoretically know.
| | 00:56 | If you open this up to Everyone that means
anybody who happens to find your Facebook profile
| | 00:59 | can send you friend requests and
chances are you are not going to
| | 01:02 | want to be friends with all of those people.
| | 01:04 | So you would have to spend some time just
ignoring those friend requests or sending those
| | 01:07 | people messages telling them why or why not you
didn't accept it and it can just get complicated.
| | 01:12 | So Friends of Friends is my recommendation for this.
| | 01:15 | Now when it comes to the message filtering,
Facebook is now doing this sort of strange thing
| | 01:20 | where they're not actually allowing you
to control who can send you messages.
| | 01:24 | They now do a filtering system.
| | 01:26 | There are two options here,
Basic Filtering and Strict Filtering.
| | 01:30 | Basic Filtering means that most of the time
your friends messages and people that you
| | 01:35 | might know will get sent to your direct inbox
where you will get a notification and
| | 01:39 | you will see it pop up here on the message
navigation right up here at the top.
| | 01:44 | If you turn on Strict Filtering that means
mostly just your friends will get through
| | 01:48 | and they say that you might miss
messages from people that you know.
| | 01:52 | I don't see any rhyme or reason to either one of these.
| | 01:54 | It's like, okay on Basic Filtering we are going
to let most of your friends through
| | 01:58 | and occasionally some people you don't know.
| | 02:00 | If you turn on Strict Filtering, we are going
to let most of your friends through
| | 02:04 | but occasionally will kick some of those people out, too.
| | 02:06 | I don't really understand this; I wish they
would give me just a single control point
| | 02:10 | where I can say, okay I want to receive messages from
these people and not these people, plain and simple.
| | 02:15 | But they have set it up this way
and that's what we have to deal with.
| | 02:18 | Now if you turn on Basic Filtering that is
the most basic form of filtering here,
| | 02:22 | like I said, mostly your friends will get through
occasionally, somebody else will get through,
| | 02:26 | you can also turn on Strict Filtering here.
| | 02:28 | If you switch over Strict Filtering that means
that basically you're saying to Facebook,
| | 02:31 | okay only the most important people
need to come through here please.
| | 02:34 | Don't just let anybody come through.
| | 02:37 | So I would recommend actually turning on Strict Filtering
and then once you have Strict Filtering turned on,
| | 02:40 | go into your Inbox after a couple days and
you can actually go in -- lets use See All here.
| | 02:47 | So we go in here and once you do that,
you'll see this little icon here that says Other
| | 02:52 | and when you click on Other that's going to
show you any messages that have been filtered out.
| | 02:56 | So you may from time to time see that certain
messages haven't filtered out from certain people,
| | 03:00 | you can then move them back into your Inbox,
you can reply those messages from here
| | 03:04 | and so forth and so on.
| | 03:05 | The interesting part about this is that not only
is Facebook doing this strange filtering system
| | 03:10 | but they're also now allowing people
to pay money to reach you.
| | 03:15 | Which means that people will be able to spend,
I think it's like a dollar, to send you a message
| | 03:20 | no matter if they're connected to you or not.
| | 03:22 | I find this to be an extreme invasion of privacy
and I hope that they don't allow this to stick around
| | 03:27 | for very long but that is the case right now
so don't be surprised if you get messages
| | 03:32 | from people on Facebook that you
don't know, especially ones that might sound
| | 03:36 | a little bit like spam or ads because people
are going to be able to pay to send you messages
| | 03:41 | now using this new message filtering system.
| | 03:43 | And again I know it's kind of a headache,
but unfortunately it's the world we live in
| | 03:47 | and when it comes to Facebook and it's one of the
prices you pay to start using a service like this.
| | 03:51 | So take some time, go through and make sure you
have set up your filtering system on your inbox.
| | 03:56 | Hopefully, you won't miss any important messages
by doing so, but if you do you can always come
| | 04:00 | back in and check the other mailbox, that way
you can see all of the messages that Facebook
| | 04:04 | has deemed unnecessary to go in your inbox and
you can reply, delete, or mark them as spam according.
| | 04:10 |

| Restricting and blocking users (NEW)| 00:00 | The last section of the new Facebook privacy
shortcuts is something called,
| | 00:04 | How do I stop someone from bothering me?
| | 00:06 | Also known as restricting and blocking users.
| | 00:10 | So how do I stop someone from bothering me?
| | 00:11 | When you click on this, it's going to expand down
and it tells you that you can block someone
| | 00:14 | to unfriend them and prevent them from
starting a conversation with you or seeing things
| | 00:18 | that you post on your timeline.
| | 00:20 | All you've to do here is add a
name or an email address to this list.
| | 00:24 | So for instance, if I wanted to block someone, I could block
let's say James Fritz and I can Block him.
| | 00:32 | It's going to come up with a list; I'm just
going to choose this is the James that I know,
| | 00:36 | right here at the top. I'll block him.
| | 00:38 | It's going to tell me that blocking will unfriend
James and prevent him from starting conversations with you.
| | 00:42 | It will also stop him from seeing
things you post on your timeline.
| | 00:45 | That's okay, let's go ahead and Block him.
| | 00:47 | And when I do that he is now
on my list of Blocked Users.
| | 00:51 | I can view all of the users that I
blocked here, and so James is there.
| | 00:55 | Anytime I want to unblock someone, all I
have to do is click Unblock and it will confirm
| | 00:59 | that I want to unblock it, that's okay.
| | 01:01 | I will have to then re-friend James,
I'll have to send him a friend request
| | 01:06 | and hopefully I won't have to explain why
I have to send him another friend request.
| | 01:09 | But in this case, I would have to send him
another friend request and then he would have
| | 01:13 | to either respond or I would
just have to sit there and wait.
| | 01:17 | So let's close this up.
| | 01:18 | So again, anytime you want to block somebody
you just come to this little section,
| | 01:21 | enter in their name, it finds them,
you block them, there you go.
| | 01:25 | However, blocking someone on Facebook is
actually kind of an extreme step because there are
| | 01:29 | other ways to manage how people see your content
and to keep them from seeing certain content as well.
| | 01:35 | So for instance, let's close this up and
let's go over here to this little section on the
| | 01:38 | left-hand side called Friends.
| | 01:40 | You'll notice there are several lists here like
Closed Friends, Family, lynda.com and Oxnard, California.
| | 01:44 | All areas corresponding to either places
where I work or the area where I live.
| | 01:48 | And so if I go to More right here, you'll
see that there's a list here called Restricted.
| | 01:53 | And so what Restricted does is it gives
you an easy and private way to limit what you
| | 01:57 | share with someone without blocking or unfriending them.
| | 02:00 | So basically, when someone is put on this list,
they will not be able to see any updates or
| | 02:05 | anything you post to Facebook that is not public.
| | 02:08 | So unless you specify, okay this is public,
these people won't be able to see it,
| | 02:13 | and they also will not be told that they are on
this list or that they have been listed at all.
| | 02:17 | So for instance here if I wanted to add a friend to
this list, I could just start typing out their names.
| | 02:21 | So let's say that I want Colleen to be on my Restricted list.
| | 02:26 | Once I've added Colleen to my Restricted list,
she is now not able to see anything
| | 02:30 | that I post on my Facebook online that isn't public.
| | 02:33 | So for instance, let's go back to my Facebook profile.
| | 02:36 | I'm going to type out a status update here.
| | 02:39 | I'll just say let's see if Colleen can see this.
| | 02:42 | I'm going to make sure that Friends is listed.
| | 02:45 | Notice when I hover over that, it says
Your Friends, Except the Restricted list.
| | 02:50 | That means anyone on the Restricted list will not
be able to see this in theory. So let's post it.
| | 02:55 | Once I post it there it is, and now if I go
back up to my little Privacy lock and I go
| | 03:00 | Who can see my stuff?
| | 03:01 | I'll choose View As> View As Specific Person,
let's do Colleen Wheeler, and then when
| | 03:08 | I look, Colleen can see when I change my cover
photo, she can see when I joined Facebook,
| | 03:12 | she can see all of this information, but
she cannot see that post that says,
| | 03:17 | Let's see if Colleen can see this.
| | 03:18 | If I switch to someone else like Doug for instance,
Doug can see this post right here.
| | 03:25 | So that means that Colleen, since she is on
my Restricted list, we're still friends,
| | 03:30 | we can still send messages, she can still
contact me or connect with me in any way she wants
| | 03:34 | to here on Facebook, she is just unable to
see anything that I post that isn't public.
| | 03:39 | So this is a great way to restrict people
without actually blocking them.
| | 03:43 | Like I said, blocking should be a last resort
for someone who is spamming you or just harassing
| | 03:48 | you on Facebook or something like that.
| | 03:50 | But if you just want to limit what the people
can see or how they can interact with you,
| | 03:54 | the Restricted list is definitely the way to go.
| | 03:57 | So hopefully by now we have a better understanding
of how to control what people see
| | 04:02 | and how they see it, and also how we can, if necessary,
block them completely here in the Facebook system.
| | 04:08 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Reviewing your activity log (NEW)| 00:00 | In addition to controlling how users
see things from you in the future
| | 00:04 | you can also go back and adjust
things from the past as well.
| | 00:07 | You do that by accessing your Privacy controls
up here at the top and then going down to
| | 00:11 | Who can see my stuff, and then choosing
something called Use Activity Log.
| | 00:15 | When you do that that's going to bring up a
lot of information about you
| | 00:18 | and everything that you've done so far
since you joined Facebook.
| | 00:21 | As you can see here you can go through all
of the different areas of your timeline
| | 00:26 | and see each individual story and
then you can adjust it accordingly.
| | 00:30 | So in this case let's say if I wanted to take
this status update for instance, I could change
| | 00:34 | who is able to see this so I could make it
Public, set it to Only Me or Custom list.
| | 00:39 | I could also determine one
of the other list that I have.
| | 00:42 | I can also click this little Pencil icon and
I can say, I want this Hidden from Timeline
| | 00:46 | or I want to Highlight it on my timeline,
or I can simply remove it.
| | 00:51 | I can also hide things like
when I became friends with somebody.
| | 00:53 | So if I don't want people to know that I'm
friends with Kirk, I can say, you know what,
| | 00:56 | let's just keep this Hidden from Timeline for now.
| | 00:59 | Right now, it tells me here that I'm hiding
when I became friends with Colleen.
| | 01:02 | Well, if I want to allow that on the timeline
I can show that, and then if I want to hide
| | 01:06 | when I became friends with Ray, I can do so.
| | 01:09 | If I want people to know, oh, okay, I became
single, well let's allow that on the timeline.
| | 01:13 | As a matter of fact, let's highlight that on the timeline.
| | 01:15 | We want everybody to know when
someone becomes single, right.
| | 01:18 | And then I know French.
| | 01:20 | Well, that's hidden right now and
chances are I want to keep that hidden.
| | 01:23 | I don't want people be asking me things in
French, after all I don't remember that much of it.
| | 01:26 | I know Spanish.
| | 01:27 | Yeah, kind of but not really, so let's hide it.
| | 01:30 | And then let's see, oh I'm from Possum Trot,
Kentucky, that's definitely something that
| | 01:33 | I want to keep on my timeline, so I want to
make sure that's Allowed, and I want to make
| | 01:37 | sure that that's also set to Public as well.
| | 01:40 | And then all of these different stories I have
individual control over, and that's the point here.
| | 01:45 | So this is a great way to go in and have
one by one control over individual stories.
| | 01:51 | It's not like a one fell swoop kind of thing
though, so it's kind of difficult to go back
| | 01:54 | especially if you've a long history.
| | 01:56 | This is a new profile that's just started
in January of 2013, but you can imagine
| | 02:00 | if you've been on Facebook since like 2006 or
2007, how unbelievably long this would be.
| | 02:06 | So over here on the left you
have filters that you can apply.
| | 02:08 | So you can see things like Your Posts.
| | 02:10 | You can see Posts that you're tagged in,
posts by other people, Posts You've Hidden.
| | 02:16 | You can see things like Photos, things you have
Liked, Comments and then there's a More section,
| | 02:22 | you can see all of these different filters
that you have available to you.
| | 02:25 | You can also go back up and set to All,
and then you can filter by date.
| | 02:28 | So you can say, okay December, November,
October all the way back until whenever
| | 02:33 | you joined Facebook, you can look through all
of those different months individually and see
| | 02:37 | all of the posts for those, and you
can go back and filter accordingly.
| | 02:40 | So again, the Activity Log is something
that just gives you a bird's eye view
| | 02:44 | of all of your activity here on Facebook and then gives
you the ability to control things on a post-by-post basis
| | 02:48 | to see and control who can see that, who can interact with it,
| | 02:52 | and how it appears on your timeline.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Limiting past posts (NEW)| 00:00 | Another great way to control what people
see and how they see it on Facebook
| | 00:04 | is to do something called limiting your past posts.
| | 00:07 | So before we took a look at how to control
your past posts one at a time,
| | 00:11 | now I am going to show you how to control
all of your past posts in one fell swoop.
| | 00:15 | Let's go back up to our Privacy controls and
let's go down this time to See More Settings.
| | 00:19 | When you choose need See More Settings you
have this third option here which says
| | 00:23 | Limit the audience for posts you've shared
with friends of friends or the Public?
| | 00:27 | And when you click on Limit Past Posts
it's going to launch this thing that tells you
| | 00:30 | that If you use this tool, content on your
timeline that you've shared with friends of
| | 00:34 | friends or the Public will
automatically change to just Friends.
| | 00:38 | And they tell you that you should remember
that people who are tagged and their friends
| | 00:41 | may see those posts as well.
| | 00:43 | You also have the option to individually
change the audience of posts.
| | 00:45 | All you have to do is just go to that post that
you want to change and choose a different audience.
| | 00:50 | But in this case if you just want everything
on your timeline to say okay, I no longer
| | 00:54 | want anything to be Public, I don't want
any friends of friends to be able to see it,
| | 00:57 | I just want my friends, the people I know, the
people I trust, to be able to get into this stuff,
| | 01:01 | I want to limit all of my past posts.
| | 01:03 | You just click that button and it's telling
you once again that You are about to limit
| | 01:07 | your old posts on your timeline without reviewing them.
| | 01:10 | Well chances are, if you're doing this
you're just doing it to protect yourself,
| | 01:13 | it's not a big deal so don't worry about it.
| | 01:15 | You can go back and review them in the
Activity Log like I showed you in a previous movie
| | 01:18 | if you want to, but you don't have to.
| | 01:20 | It tells you here that This global change
cannot be undone in one click.
| | 01:23 | If you change your mind later, you'll need
to change the audience for each of these posts
| | 01:27 | one at a time and that's in the Activity Log.
| | 01:29 | And that's okay, just Confirm it and now
everything that you've posted on Facebook,
| | 01:34 | as far back as Facebook can reach
says it is now just for your friends,
| | 01:39 | it is not the public, it is not for friends of friends;
it's only for your friends.
| | 01:44 | So you click Close, that's finished,
click Close here and you're done.
| | 01:49 | From now on whatever the setting is that you
have setup so that when you create new posts,
| | 01:53 | whatever that is, that will then be the
default privacy settings for your posts.
| | 01:57 | If you got that set to Public, you might want to
think about going to change that just to Friends.
| | 02:01 | If you got to set to Friends of Friends or
whatever it is that you might have it set to,
| | 02:04 | anytime you want to come back in and
just limit all of the past posts, just go right here,
| | 02:08 | click Limit your Old Posts and you can change
everything on your Timeline instantly
| | 02:14 | to just be focused where your friends can see it.
| | 02:18 | So again if you want to get into this section,
you just go up to the Privacy icon,
| | 02:22 | go down to See More Settings and then we're
looking for the third option Limit Past Posts.
| | 02:27 | That's how you can control all of your
posts at one time and set them all,
| | 02:32 | to just be able to be viewed by your Friends.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Limiting who can search for you (NEW)| 00:00 | Something else that you might want to control
is how people are able to find you on Facebook.
| | 00:05 | In order to access this section of the Facebook
system just go up to the little lock icon
| | 00:09 | and choose See More Settings and that will
take you to this page that I'm viewing here.
| | 00:13 | Once you get to this page you are looking
for the section that says, Who can look me up?
| | 00:16 | And you have two options here, Who can look you up
using your email address or phone number
| | 00:20 | that you provided to Facebook
and then the second option,
| | 00:23 | Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline.
| | 00:26 | Let's take these one at a time.
| | 00:28 | The first one here, so who can look you up on Facebook
using your email address or your phone number.
| | 00:32 | Now if you've provided your phone number to
Facebook, that's okay, I don't recommend doing
| | 00:36 | that necessarily for privacy reasons,
but if you have done that okay.
| | 00:40 | But undoubtedly you have provided an email
address, because that's how you sign up for
| | 00:44 | Facebook, using an email address.
| | 00:46 | So if someone knows this email address, are
you allowing them to find you simply by having
| | 00:51 | that email address or are you
limiting this to only your friends.
| | 00:54 | You can have the ability to say;
yeah sure anyone can find me, Everyone.
| | 00:59 | Friends of Friends, mean people who know
people I am already connected to can find me and
| | 01:04 | connect with me or are you saying you know
what, I just want Friends to be able to find me.
| | 01:08 | Friends is definitely the safest option here
because it limits who can find you
| | 01:12 | based on these two criteria.
| | 01:14 | If you do Friends of Friends that's still
pretty much protecting you because of the
| | 01:18 | fact that that's saying okay, whoever contacts
me has to be connected to someone I'm already
| | 01:22 | connected to, someone I already know and trust.
| | 01:25 | If you open it up to Everyone that means
anybody who is able to find your email address
| | 01:29 | or your phone number can enter
it in and find you on Facebook.
| | 01:33 | And let's be honest here, how many times
have you entered in your email address
| | 01:37 | or your phone number on the web somewhere.
| | 01:39 | Chances are you've done it a lot and so
it's not that hard to find either one of those
| | 01:43 | pieces of information, and so that makes
it easy for people to find you on Facebook.
| | 01:47 | So limiting this to Friends of Friends
or Friends is definitely the way to go.
| | 01:51 | In this case I'm just going to go limit
it to Friends and then just click Close.
| | 01:54 | It will automatic save that setting and you'll see
Friends appear right there and you'll be good to go.
| | 01:59 | The second part of this, Do you want
other search engines to link to your Timeline?
| | 02:04 | Basically what this means is do you want
places like Google, Bing, Yahoo, places like that,
| | 02:09 | do you want them to be able to when someone
types in your name or your email address into
| | 02:13 | that search engine, do you want them to
find your Facebook profile and serve that up as
| | 02:18 | a result so people can say, oh so you know
Justin, great, here is his Facebook profile.
| | 02:24 | Do you want people to be able to do that?
| | 02:25 | This is totally up to you, but know that
this little setting right here is fairly tricky.
| | 02:31 | So when I click Edit, it gives you an explanation
of what this is, it tells you that when this
| | 02:35 | setting is on it's easier for other search
engines to link to your timeline and search results.
| | 02:40 | If you turn off this setting it may take a
while for search engines to stop showing the
| | 02:43 | link to your timeline in the results.
| | 02:45 | Now you would think that I would need to come
in here and click something to make this work.
| | 02:51 | Well it's already off by default,
so you don't have to click anything.
| | 02:55 | If there's no check mark here, that means you are
not allowing search engines to view your stuff.
| | 03:01 | If there is a check mark here, like so, that
means that you are allowing this to happen.
| | 03:06 | So by default this is unchecked, and let me
confirm that and what that means is,
| | 03:12 | I'm all good, I'm protected; no search
engine is able to serve up my profile.
| | 03:16 | However, when that is checked, that means
search engines are searching for you,
| | 03:19 | and when someone enters in your name chances are they
have a better opportunity to find you on Facebook.
| | 03:25 | So when I close this I want this to say Off most likely.
| | 03:29 | If you are a public figure or someone of prominence
that wants to be found via Facebook
| | 03:34 | or if you're using Facebook for business
purposes, you might want to turn this on.
| | 03:37 | But if you're just using Facebook as a private
social network where you interact with family
| | 03:42 | and friends, chances are you know how to
find people that need to be in touch with you
| | 03:46 | or they know how to find you, they don't need
to search for you on a search engine,
| | 03:50 | so I would suggest turning this off unless
you're using it for one of those other
| | 03:53 | business-related purposes I talked about earlier.
| | 03:56 | Okay, so let's review here we've got two settings
when it comes to who can look me up on Facebook.
| | 04:00 | The first one control how people find you
via your email address or your phone number,
| | 04:05 | so we've set that to Friends to be the safest.
| | 04:07 | Then we setup the do you want other search
engines to link to your Timeline setting
| | 04:12 | and we want to make sure that that's set to off,
that is of course unless we're using Facebook
| | 04:15 | as a public figure or for business-related purposes.
| | 04:19 | So these two settings right here control
how people find you and in the end
| | 04:23 | how many people can find you and how
they can interact with you on Facebook.
| | 04:27 | So be sure you come in and edit these settings and
change them according to your personal preferences.
| | 04:31 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Refining your Timeline privacy (NEW)| 00:00 | The final piece in the Facebook privacy puzzle
is something called the timeline review process.
| | 00:06 | This is where you refine your timeline privacy
inside of Facebook and you are going to
| | 00:10 | get to this section by going up to the little
lock icon and choosing See More Settings.
| | 00:15 | When you choose See More Settings it takes
you to the Privacy Settings and tools
| | 00:18 | and then on the left-hand side you are going
to find something called Timeline and Tagging.
| | 00:22 | This is where you set up three different sections
of your timeline and tagging settings.
| | 00:27 | Number one, Who can add things to my timeline?
That means who can post to your timeline
| | 00:32 | and whether or not you want to review things that
you're tagged in before they appear on your timeline.
| | 00:37 | Number two, Who can see things on my timeline?
| | 00:40 | That means that you Review what other
people see on your timeline;
| | 00:42 | that you choose Who can see posts that
you've been tagged in on your timeline;
| | 00:46 | and Who can see what others post on your timeline.
| | 00:50 | The third one is How can I manage
tags people add and tagging suggestions?
| | 00:54 | This is where we review tags people add to
your own posts before the tag appears,
| | 01:00 | also you can control when you're added or tagged
in a post, who do you want to be able to see that
| | 01:05 | if they're not already in it,
and also who sees tag suggestions
| | 01:09 | when a photo is uploaded that looks like you.
| | 01:11 | Let's take a look at these one at a time.
| | 01:13 | The first one here, Who can post in your timeline?
| | 01:16 | This means like if someone wants to come
to your timeline and say, hey happy birthday
| | 01:20 | or congratulations on the new job or
something like that, who can do that?
| | 01:24 | You have the choices of setting up Friends or Only Me.
| | 01:27 | In this case I am going to set it Friends,
I want people to be able to tell me happy birthday,
| | 01:30 | it makes me feel good to know that people are
out there and they know when my birthday is.
| | 01:34 | Let's close that up.
| | 01:36 | Review posts friends tag you in
before they appear on your timeline?
| | 01:39 | I think this is a very good option and I think
this is a great way to practice safe Facebooking,
| | 01:45 | if you know what I mean.
| | 01:46 | So if we go into Edit here what this means
is that people can tag you, they can tag you
| | 01:51 | in photos, they can tag you in status updates,
they can tag you in places, there is all different
| | 01:55 | ways that people can tag you on Facebook.
| | 01:57 | If you enable this setting, basically what
this means is before it will appear on your
| | 02:02 | Timeline on Facebook, you actually have to
go in and review it so you can say,
| | 02:08 | okay this is appropriate, yes.
| | 02:09 | Or this is not appropriate, let's hide it.
| | 02:11 | That's what this means and
so I always have this enabled.
| | 02:14 | And chances are, you're going to want to
have that enabled too, you want this to say On
| | 02:18 | when you're finished. Let's move on.
| | 02:21 | Who can see things on my timeline?
| | 02:22 | Review what other people see on your timeline.
| | 02:24 | This is where you go into view your profile
as someone else which we've already
| | 02:28 | talked about in this chapter.
| | 02:29 | Who can see posts you've tagged in on your timeline?
| | 02:32 | Again, you can set this to Everyone,
Friends of Friends, Friends, or Custom lists.
| | 02:37 | So basically what this means is who
can see posts that you've been tagged in.
| | 02:40 | So if somebody says, oh I'm at the baseball
game with Justin Seeley and they tag me in
| | 02:44 | that post, do I want people to be able to see that.
| | 02:47 | Well chances are, yes I'd like for
my friends to be able to see that.
| | 02:50 | You might want to extend it to Friends of Friends.
| | 02:51 | If you put it on Everyone that means everyone is going
to be able see anytime someone tags you in something.
| | 02:57 | So if you've set it to Friends and you've
also got the Tag Review turned on,
| | 03:01 | this is the safest way to go about it.
| | 03:03 | So I am going to set mine to Friends
and I am going to click Close.
| | 03:06 | Who can see what others post on your timeline?
| | 03:08 | You can edit this and you can choose again
Everyone, Friends of Friends, Friends, or Custom.
| | 03:14 | In this case I think Friends is good because
I want other friends to be able to see when
| | 03:17 | someone is posting on my timeline for my birthday
or maybe even Friends of Friends will be appropriate
| | 03:22 | here because of the fact that you want as
many people in the world to know, that are
| | 03:25 | connected to people you already
trust that is, that it's your birthday.
| | 03:28 | So maybe they post happy birthday messages.
| | 03:30 | It just depends on how much you're willing
to share and how far you want that social
| | 03:35 | circle to reach outside of your immediate
friends list, this is all up to you.
| | 03:40 | In this case I am going to leave mine set to Friends.
| | 03:42 | The final section down here at the bottom,
do we want to review tags people add
| | 03:46 | to yourown post before the tag appears?
| | 03:49 | This is much like this up here at the top;
do you want to review tags before they appear?
| | 03:54 | So basically that means okay, if you have uploaded
a photo and someone comes to your photo
| | 03:58 | and says, oh it looks like Justin in that photo
or that looks like Tommy in that photo,
| | 04:02 | let's tag them in this photo.
| | 04:04 | Do you want to review that before that
tag is allowed to be displayed on Facebook?
| | 04:08 | Chances are you do, because you never know
what people are going to tag on Facebook,
| | 04:11 | so I am going to leave that as On.
| | 04:14 | The next one here, when you're tagged in a
post who do you want to add to the audience
| | 04:19 | if they aren't already in it?
| | 04:21 | So basically this means okay,
if I'm tagged in post, someone says
| | 04:24 | alright I am at the baseball game with Justin Seeley.
| | 04:28 | When they say that how many people do you
want to be able to see that post
| | 04:31 | if they're not already included in the audience?
| | 04:33 | I am going to say, just my Friends.
| | 04:36 | You can set that to Only Me if you don't
want it to extend out past your immediate
| | 04:39 | social circle or you can say Friends.
| | 04:41 | In this I think Friends is a very safe option
so I'll just go ahead and leave it there.
| | 04:46 | Finally, who sees tag suggestions when
photos that look like you are uploaded?
| | 04:51 | Now here's the thing, even though I am sort
of a nerd and I'm really into this technology stuff,
| | 04:55 | I'm still a little freaked out by the fact
that when someone uploads a photo,
| | 04:59 | if it looks enough like me, Facebook has the technology
to recognize that and say, oh that looks Justin.
| | 05:05 | That's a little too sci-fi for me.
| | 05:06 | So what I like is the fact that Facebook gets to
tell me here that I'm able to turn this off,
| | 05:11 | so if someone uploads a photo like this
that looks like me in theory, are people
| | 05:17 | getting suggestions that say, oh that looks like
Justin, would you like to tag him in the photo?
| | 05:21 | I don't want anyone to be able to do that.
| | 05:23 | You can set that to Friends or you can set it to No One.
| | 05:26 | That way no one can tag a photo of you if it's not you, right.
| | 05:30 | No one can tag a photo of you just because it looks like you.
| | 05:33 | So I think this is a great feature that
they have included here and I recommend
| | 05:37 | setting this to No One, just to lock down your privacy overall.
| | 05:41 | Now let's close that up and so there we go.
| | 05:43 | All right let's make a quick review here of what we've done.
| | 05:46 | We've actually gone through and refined
all of our timeline and tagging settings here.
| | 05:50 | We've chosen who can add things to our timeline.
| | 05:52 | We've seen who can see things on my timeline
and how do they interact with things
| | 05:57 | that are on my timeline and how can I manage tags
people add and how do I manage tagging suggestions.
| | 06:03 | We've done all of that from within this one section here
and again we got there from the privacy lock,
| | 06:08 | See More Settings and then we chose
Timeline and Tagging and that's where
| | 06:12 | you go to refine all of these settings and
set them up exactly like you want them
| | 06:16 | to get the most out of your privacy controls.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Managing subscriptions (NEW)| 00:00 | The last thing that we are going
to talk about in the privacy chapter
| | 00:03 | is something called Subscribers or Followers.
| | 00:06 | This is something where you allow people who
are not necessarily your friends
| | 00:10 | to connect with you on Facebook.
So Facebook defines this as the fact that
| | 00:14 | your friends aren't the only ones who might
like to see your photos or your posts.
| | 00:17 | Allowing followers allows you to share with anyone
on Facebook and find people with the same interest.
| | 00:22 | Now in my estimation this is going to be more
for businesses or business professionals
| | 00:26 | that are looking to connect with a
broader audience on Facebook.
| | 00:30 | Celebrities and people like that who don't
necessarily have a Facebook business page
| | 00:33 | are really starting to embrace this on the web.
| | 00:36 | Basically what this enables you to do is it
enables you to have followers much the same
| | 00:40 | way you do on Twitter or other social networks.
| | 00:43 | When you turn on Followers, basically what
this means is that you're enabling
| | 00:47 | anyone to see the posts that you
make that are set to Public.
| | 00:50 | If you set your stuff to just be Friends
or on a Private list or something like that,
| | 00:55 | none of your Subscribers or "Followers"
will be able to see that.
| | 00:58 | If you want to go to facebook.com/about/follow,
they have an extensive page of information
| | 01:04 | here that tells you all about the
different areas of the following system.
| | 01:08 | This will explain in-depth exactly what it is
and why you might want to turn it on.
| | 01:12 | If you haven't turned this setting on, and
you would like to, here is how you get there.
| | 01:17 | You just go up to the Privacy icon here,
go to See More Settings and then on
| | 01:22 | the left-handside go down to Followers.
| | 01:24 | In order to turn this on you just click this check mark.
| | 01:27 | It tells you here that followers will only see your
public posts and they will not be added as friends.
| | 01:32 | So you choose what posts to make public and
you can share personal updates with just friends.
| | 01:37 | When you enable Followers by clicking this,
you will also see a list of follower controls.
| | 01:42 | The first one is Follower Search.
| | 01:44 | This sets up if you want to connect with people
who want to follow you, change your settings
| | 01:48 | so that anyone can search for your timeline.
| | 01:51 | This means that I'm basically overriding my
search privacy controls and saying you know what,
| | 01:55 | anybody can find me, I want everybody
to be able to find me on Facebook.
| | 01:59 | Follower Comments, this is controlling
who can comment on your public posts.
| | 02:04 | You can set this to be Everybody,
Friends of Friends or only Friends.
| | 02:09 | If you are doing this public follower thing and you
really want to engage and interact with people,
| | 02:13 | Everybody is the setting you want to do here.
| | 02:16 | However, if you're only limiting this to
Friends of Friends or just your Friends,
| | 02:19 | chances are you're probably not really to going to get
the most out of the following experience anyway,
| | 02:24 | so I would just turn it off.
| | 02:25 | So in this case if you wanted it turned on
I would just use Everybody,
| | 02:28 | but for now I am just going to close it up.
| | 02:31 | Follower Notifications, do you want notifications
when people who aren't your friends
| | 02:36 | start following you and share like
or comment on your public posts?
| | 02:39 | Now if you garner a big following like you turn
into a celebrity overnight or something like that,
| | 02:43 | chances are these notifications are
going to get really old, really fast.
| | 02:47 | But it is kind of nice when you first start
to open up to followers that you see.
| | 02:50 | Okay this many people are interested in what I have
to say, so you might want to set that to Everybody.
| | 02:55 | Then eventually when the notifications
start getting too fast and too furious for you,
| | 03:00 | you can set this to Friends of Friends
or Nobody down the road.
| | 03:03 | I am just going to leave it at
Friends of Friends and click Close.
| | 03:06 | You also have the option to set up a Username.
| | 03:08 | The username here is basically a Facebook address
for you so like facebook.com/seeley
| | 03:15 | would be for me or facebook.com/justin
or something like that.
| | 03:20 | This is a username that people will easily
be able to access your profile on Facebook.
| | 03:25 | If you have not set up your username yet you can
Edit this and you can choose to set up your username.
| | 03:30 | It tells you here that your account must be
verified before you can change your username
| | 03:34 | and one of the ways that they require for
verification is that you have a mobile phone
| | 03:37 | that can receive SMS messages, so basically
they want your phone number
| | 03:41 | and they want to send you a text message.
| | 03:43 | It tells you that if not, you can try to
register your username at a later time.
| | 03:46 | So if you absolutely want to have a username
on Facebook, verifying via your mobile phone
| | 03:51 | is the way to do that these days.
| | 03:53 | Then finally, if you would like to connect
a Twitter account to your Facebook account
| | 03:56 | so you can cross-post between Facebook and
Twitter that is what this last option is here.
| | 04:01 | That's probably a better way to start off
with this following thing because you can
| | 04:04 | just have all of your Twitter posts be automatically
public post on Facebook and that way people
| | 04:09 | are seeing your tweets as well as your
Facebook updates and it's just easier that way.
| | 04:14 | So in this case I am going to turn this off for now and
you can see when I turn that off everything goes away.
| | 04:19 | But if you want to learn more about following,
you just come to this section and
| | 04:22 | choose Learn More, you can read all
of Facebook's documentation on it.
| | 04:25 | But I just wanted to show you where you can
find it, how you can turn it on and explain to you
| | 04:29 | a little bit about how it works before you
go in and start messing with it on your own.
| | 04:32 |

7. Exploring Facebook Mobile ApplicationsUsing Facebook for iOS| 00:00 | The Facebook for iOS application is a free
application that's available in the iOS App Store.
| | 00:06 | There is both an iPhone version and an iPad
version and both are a great mobile experience.
| | 00:12 | When you first open up the application on
the iPad you'll notice that the News Feed
| | 00:15 | is prominently displayed
here on the left-hand side.
| | 00:18 | You can scroll through News Feed items and
you have the ability to like them and also
| | 00:21 | comment on them directly from this section.
| | 00:25 | You can click Done to return back.
| | 00:28 | If you're viewing a photo, or if you're
viewing just a post, you can comment on it directly
| | 00:32 | from this window here, leave the
comment, and then return back.
| | 00:41 | You have the ability to sort your News Feed
from the top right-hand corner by clicking
| | 00:45 | Sort, and then either choosing Top
Stories or simply by choosing Most Recent.
| | 00:52 | On the right-hand side of the screen you'll
notice that all of your contacts are displayed
| | 00:55 | here, and you will see any of them that are online
will be displayed with a green dot next to them.
| | 01:00 | Meaning you can start an instant chat
session with them directly from this window.
| | 01:04 | If someone is in the list and has a mobile
phone icon next to them that means that they're
| | 01:08 | not currently online but they are
receiving messages on a mobile device.
| | 01:12 | You can send a message to these people simply
by clicking on them and typing out a message.
| | 01:23 | When you click Send it sends a message to
that person, you can then collapse the keyboard
| | 01:28 | and click away to close it.
| | 01:30 | You'll see all of your current
messages up hear at the top.
| | 01:33 | You can close those conversations with
the small X on the right-hand side.
| | 01:38 | If you need access any other parts of the
Facebook website you can do so using the blue
| | 01:43 | navigation bar at the top of the screen.
| | 01:44 | This allows you to view pending friend requests,
also view your messages, and view any notifications
| | 01:57 | that you might have received recently.
| | 02:00 | Tapping this blue navigation link shows you
all of the different parts of the Facebook
| | 02:03 | website that you have access to in this mobile
application, like your Messages, Nearby People,
| | 02:16 | Events, your Friends list, and some of the
auto-generated Friends list like Close Friends,
| | 02:30 | Family, your workplace, and
People who are in your same city.
| | 02:38 | You can also access your Facebook Groups, like my Up
and Running with Facebook Group that I created.
| | 02:44 | From this screen you can write new posts on
the group's timeline, and share photos, either
| | 02:51 | from the device itself or by
taking a photo with the device.
| | 02:58 | You can also manage your subscriptions, view
the Help Center, and change your settings,
| | 03:03 | like your Account Settings or
Adjusting your Privacy Settings as well.
| | 03:07 | This is also where you go to log out of
the Application if you choose to do so.
| | 03:11 | Clicking away from that closes it.
| | 03:13 | If you need to go to your profile, click on
your name at the top, and it takes you to your
| | 03:17 | profile page. You'll able to see your profile
picture, update your Status, add a photo, and
| | 03:27 | check in to places.
| | 03:31 | You can also view your profile
information and your photos from here as well.
| | 03:36 | The photos is a really great experience. You
can find a photo in one of the albums that
| | 03:40 | you want to view, tap the album, and then it shows
you all of the photos that are available to you.
| | 03:45 | Tapping another photo would launch the photo
in a full screen window, and by tapping it
| | 03:50 | again you'll bring up photo controls. This
allows you to view the likes and comments
| | 03:54 | or add a like and comment yourself. You can
also tag the photo, make it your profile
| | 04:00 | picture, save the photo, or delete the photo.
| | 04:04 | Tapping away from that closes it.
| | 04:05 | You can navigate to the other photos in this album by
tapping and dragging along the bottom of the screen.
| | 04:12 | When you're finished viewing the photos you can
click Done, and it returns you back to the album view.
| | 04:17 | To get back out tap the arrow, and to get
back to your Facebook Wall, tap on the Wall.
| | 04:24 | The Facebook for iOS application is a great
experience when you're on the go, and it's
| | 04:28 | also a great way to keep you
connected no matter where you happened to be.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Browsing the Facebook app (NEW)| 00:00 | Once you have the Facebook mobile
application downloaded to your device,
| | 00:03 | just simply tap on the application icon
and it launches up like this.
| | 00:07 | All you have to do is enter in your credentials,
as you normally would to log into Facebook.
| | 00:10 | So in this case, its your email
address and your password.
| | 00:15 | Once you're all logged in, the Facebook application
might ask if you to want to allow for push notifications.
| | 00:19 | Basically, what you're agreeing to here is that
if someone post something on your timeline,
| | 00:23 | sends you a message or otherwise tags you in any way
on Facebook, do you want the mobile application
| | 00:27 | to then send you an alert to let you know
that you need to go check your Facebook.
| | 00:32 | If you want to agree to this, go ahead.
| | 00:33 | If not, it's not a big deal.
| | 00:36 | Once you access the Facebook mobile app,
you'll see that the Newsfeed
| | 00:38 | is prominently displayed here on the screen.
| | 00:41 | Just scroll with your finger to see all of the
different news stories that are available to you.
| | 00:45 | If you want to refresh your Newsfeed,
simply pull down and release
| | 00:49 | and that gives you the latest news updates.
| | 00:51 | At the very top of the app is where
you navigate to different areas.
| | 00:54 | On the left-hand side, this button navigates to all
of the different parts of the Facebook application.
| | 00:59 | Tapping that again slides it back over.
| | 01:02 | You can also see things like pending
Friend Requests, your Messages
| | 01:07 | and also any Notifications that you've received.
| | 01:12 | On the right-hand side, this little guy
enables you to access your chat window.
| | 01:16 | Anybody with a green dot is currently active on chat.
| | 01:19 | Anyone without a green dot but with a mobile
phone next of their name means they currently
| | 01:22 | have access to Facebook on their mobile device.
| | 01:25 | You can also see next to that, how
long ago they were active on the site.
| | 01:29 | You can slide this back over to close that.
| | 01:31 | If you tap on Status, Photo, or Check In this allows
you to share things like written status updates,
| | 01:37 | photographs and also to check in to different places.
| | 01:40 | Let's go, up here and tap on the left navigation again
and let's take a look at different places we can go.
| | 01:44 | The first of which is going to be your profile.
| | 01:46 | So I'll tap my name and it takes me to my profile section.
| | 01:49 | I can see my header image, my profile image.
| | 01:54 | I can also write statuses and share photos
from here and I can see my entire timeline.
| | 01:59 | If you see a story on your time that you want
to get rid of or hide, tap this little area here
| | 02:03 | and then you'll hit Delete or Hide From Timeline.
| | 02:06 | Cancel gets you right back out.
| | 02:08 | In addition to your profile, you also have access to
areas like Find Friends, Messages, Nearby, Events.
| | 02:15 | You can access things like Chat, Friends, Photos.
| | 02:20 | You can create and access groups.
| | 02:23 | You can also access your different list like
Close Friends, Family, where you work,
| | 02:26 | where you went to school and towards the bottom,
you have access to things like Help Center,
| | 02:31 | your Privacy Settings and even a button to logout.
| | 02:34 | Let's go back to my Newsfeed now.
| | 02:35 | So I'll scroll back to the top and tap on Newsfeed
and that takes me back to the Facebook home screen.
| | 02:41 | This is just a brief tour of the Facebook mobile application.
| | 02:44 | We'll dive in a little bit more detail throughout this chapter.
| | 02:46 | But I wanted to give you a better idea of how the app worked
| | 02:49 | and how you are able to navigate around it,
so you're not lost as we continue to go.

| Sharing via Facebook mobile (NEW)| 00:00 | In order to share things on the Facebook
mobile application, it's actually really easy.
| | 00:05 | All you have to do is tap one
of these buttons across the top.
| | 00:07 | So, if you wanted to share a written status
update for instance, just up on Status
| | 00:13 | and then, you could just say what's on your mind.
| | 00:17 | When you're ready to post,
you've a couple of different options.
| | 00:20 | At the bottom here, you have the
ability to tag different friends.
| | 00:23 | You can also add a location.
| | 00:25 | You can add a photo to your post
and you can set the audience for the post as well.
| | 00:30 | Things like Public, Friends, Only Me or
specify different Friends List here at the bottom.
| | 00:36 | Once you've chosen that, you can
come back and then tap the Post button
| | 00:40 | and that goes through just like so.
| | 00:42 | If you want to share a photo,
it's pretty easy as well.
| | 00:45 | Just tap Photo, it takes you to your
Camera Roll then you just pick a photo,
| | 00:50 | hit the check mark at the top and you can hit
this little Compose button in the bottom right
| | 00:54 | and you can share the photo.
| | 00:57 | Tap on Post, it uploads the photo.
| | 01:01 | And you should see the photo appear
in your Newsfeed once it's finished.
| | 01:04 | If you would like to check into a place, tap on Check In.
| | 01:08 | If you don't have location services enabled
on your phone, it will tell you so.
| | 01:12 | If you do, it should zoom in to wherever you are
and you're able to pick a place via the list and check in.
| | 01:18 | You can tap Cancel to exit out.
| | 01:20 | You can also share updates from your profile as well.
| | 01:24 | Just tap up here, tap your name, then scroll down
to where it says Write Post or Share Photo.
| | 01:31 | Tapping Write Post takes you to
the same status update screen
| | 01:35 | and Share Photo does the same thing as well.
| | 01:38 | So as you can see sharing on the go with the Facebook
mobile application is very quick and very easy.
| | 01:43 | It's no wonder so many people choose this as
their main way for interacting with Facebook.

| Liking, commenting, and tagging on the go (NEW)| 00:00 | In addition to sharing your own status update,
you can also interact with other people's status
| | 00:04 | updates as well and also their pictures.
| | 00:07 | As you can see here, I have the ability at the bottom
of this post to like and comment on this photo.
| | 00:12 | I can tap Like and that just adds
to the like count of the photo.
| | 00:15 | I can also tap here to comment,
then just tap Post to post a comment.
| | 00:22 | Once it posts, you can see that.
| | 00:25 | To get back out, just tap the arrow
it takes me right back.
| | 00:28 | If I need to tag someone in a post,
that's pretty easy as well.
| | 00:32 | I can scroll up to the top here and tap Status.
| | 00:35 | Then I can type out something like Hey
and then I start typing someone's name
| | 00:39 | with an @ symbol in front of it and I can then pick
that person from a list and it writes up their name for me.
| | 00:45 | Then I simply type out the rest
of my post and tap on the Post.
| | 00:51 | And now that person
is tagged in this status update.
| | 00:54 | If I tap on their name, it actually
takes me to that person's profile.
| | 00:57 | And if they're using Facebook on their mobile device,
they will get a notification
| | 01:01 | telling them that I've tagged them in this post.
| | 01:03 | Then they can go back over and see exactly
what I've written and respond to me if they wish.
| | 01:07 | Let's go back and then let's tap here and go to my profile.
| | 01:12 | So again, anytime you see anything that you
want to like, just scroll, tap the Like button.
| | 01:18 | If you wish to comment on it, tap on Comment
and if you wish to tag somebody,
| | 01:22 | just start typing their name and you
should see a list of people come up
| | 01:26 | and then you can just tap their name
and you're ready to go.
| | 01:28 | So, as you can see liking, commenting and
tagging people is fairly simple
| | 01:33 | using the Facebook mobile application.
| | 01:35 | So the next time, you start to share things
or if you want to interact
| | 01:38 | with things people are sharing, use these options.
| | 01:40 | Its a great way to interact with people and to get
a little bit more out of your Facebook experience.
| | 01:45 |

| Using Facebook Messenger (NEW)| 00:00 | In addition to the regular Facebook application,
you also have access to something
| | 00:03 | called Facebook Messenger which is a new
application from Facebook.
| | 00:07 | When you launch this app for the first time,
it's going to come up with this screen
| | 00:09 | where it asks you, who do you want to Log in as?
| | 00:11 | Chances are you're already logged in as yourself through
the Facebook Mobile App, so you can just tap Continue.
| | 00:17 | Once you tap Continue it is going to take you
to the Welcome to Messenger screen
| | 00:19 | where it tells you, you can reach friends
wherever they are mobile or web.
| | 00:23 | Tab Next to go to the next screen and it's
going to recommend that you do something
| | 00:26 | called turning on notifications.
| | 00:27 | Basically, this just means that each time
someone sends you a message,
| | 00:30 | you get a push notification on your device
telling you that they've done so.
| | 00:34 | Just tab Turn On or Not Now,
depending on your personal choice.
| | 00:37 | If you choose Turn On, Facebook may prompt you
to accept a push notification authorization.
| | 00:42 | Just go ahead and accept that or if you don't
want push notations, go ahead and decline it.
| | 00:47 | In this application, it's very basic.
| | 00:49 | You have access to a message composition
window down here at the bottom
| | 00:52 | where you can send a message to someone.
| | 00:54 | Just type out their name and then type
out a massage and then tab Send.
| | 01:02 | If that parson has notifications enabled
with their account or on their device,
| | 01:05 | they will automatically see something pop up on their
device and they will be able to interact with you.
| | 01:10 | When they reply, you'll see that
reply pop up in a thread just like so.
| | 01:14 | To go back just tab the back button and it
takes you back to see all of the messages
| | 01:17 | that you currently have.
| | 01:19 | You can tab here on the top right, to see a
list of the people that are currently active
| | 01:22 | and you can tap on that person
to start sending them a message.
| | 01:25 | It may ask you whether you not you
want to use your current location.
| | 01:28 | Meaning you want to tag yourself saying
oh I'm in Ventura, California, for instance.
| | 01:32 | If you want to allow that hit OK,
if not choose Don't Allow.
| | 01:36 | Just type out your message and then tab Send.
| | 01:39 | Once you do that the person should receive
your message and you can go back to the list.
| | 01:43 | Like I said this application is very basic,
but it gives you direct access
| | 01:46 | to your Facebook messages
almost like a text messaging application.
| | 01:50 | So all this is good for is sending messages back
and forth between you and your Facebook friends.
| | 01:54 | Don't expect to be able to write status updates, or
like, or comment, or even share photos via this way.
| | 01:59 | Anytime you see a new message pop in, you'll
see a little blue dot next to it,
| | 02:03 | you can tap on that and, you can see the
threat of comments just like this.
| | 02:07 | So again this is just a very limited
application giving you direct access
| | 02:10 | to one piece of the Facebook ecosystem.
| | 02:13 | It's a great way to stay up-to-date with all
of your messages, while you're on the go
| | 02:16 | without all of the unnecessary clutter
of the whole Facebook application.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Exploring Facebook Camera (NEW)| 00:00 | Another standalone Facebook application
is something called Facebook Camera.
| | 00:04 | Let's tap on that and launch it up.
| | 00:06 | When I first launch it up it's going to ask
me if I want to continue as the person
| | 00:08 | I'm logged in as on my mobile device.
| | 00:10 | If I want to I can tap Continue
or if it's not me I can hit Not You
| | 00:15 | and I can tap that and then log in
with my normal Facebook log in credentials.
| | 00:18 | In this case, I'm just going to continue
and that's going to take me into
| | 00:21 | the Facebook Camera application.
| | 00:23 | When I first launch it,
its going to ask me a couple things.
| | 00:25 | Its going to say "Camera" would like to send me push
notifications, I can choose to say OK or Don't Allow.
| | 00:30 | I also need to give camera my access to my photos,
after all I want it to be able to save
| | 00:35 | and send photos from my camera roll.
So I'll hit OK to that.
| | 00:39 | Once I do that I'm going to see some photos
that have been shared recently in my
| | 00:43 | Facebook News Feed; this is only photos.
| | 00:45 | If I scroll back up to the top, I can see
some of the things in my camera roll
| | 00:49 | and I can tap here on the camera icon
to take a photo as well.
| | 00:55 | If I want to get back I'll just tap on
this icon here and it takes me back.
| | 00:59 | If I want to select a photo for my camera roll,
I can then just pick the photo hit the
| | 01:03 | little compose button in the bottom-right
and then I can say something about this photo.
| | 01:09 | Once I'm ready to post it, I'll tap Post
that's going to upload the photo for me
| | 01:14 | and post it to Facebook just like so.
| | 01:17 | So again, this is just another mobile application
that Facebook has developed in order to give you
| | 01:20 | quick access to a very basic part
of the Facebook ecosystem.
| | 01:24 | In this case, they are targeting photos
instead of just the messaging.
| | 01:28 | So in this case when you want to share
just a photo or if that's the only part of the
| | 01:32 | Facebook ecosystem that you find useful,
this application is going to be great for you
| | 01:37 | and this is a great way to quickly and easily
share photos with out all of the other stuff
| | 01:41 | that goes on in Facebook.
| | 01:43 | You don't see regular News Feed updates here,
you don't see any ads, you don't see any
| | 01:48 | application requests or anything like that;
this is all just about photos.
| | 01:51 | So if that's the main reason that you use
Facebook, this is a great application for you.
| | 01:56 |

| Exploring Facebook Poke (NEW)| 00:00 | The latest edition of Facebook suite of
mobile applications is something called Poke.
| | 00:05 | Let's tap on that and launch it up.
| | 00:06 | When you first launch it up you're going to
be asked do you want to continue as the person
| | 00:10 | you are currently logged in as or not.
| | 00:11 | In this case, I'll just tap Continue
and once I do that it's going to lock me in
| | 00:17 | and it's going to ask me if I would
like to except push notifications.
| | 00:20 | Again, you have the choice here of
allowing or not allowing it. So I'll hit OK.
| | 00:25 | And once, I do that it takes me
into the Facebook Poke system.
| | 00:28 | Basically, a poke is just a short chat message
that you're going to send to a friend.
| | 00:33 | It tells you, you can poke a friend
with a message, photo, or video.
| | 00:36 | You can set the timer to choose how long they
can see it and then you can press and hold
| | 00:40 | to see other pokes from friends.
| | 00:42 | So in this case, if I want to poke someone,
I can just tap on this little icon here and
| | 00:47 | I select a friend to poke.
| | 00:49 | So let's poke Doug then I'll hit Send.
| | 00:53 | That's going to send a poke to Doug.
If he has poke installed in his mobile device,
| | 00:56 | he'll be able to poke me back
or at least see that I poked him.
| | 00:59 | I can also send a message to someone.
| | 01:02 | So in this case, I can just type out Hello there,
I can set it to be 5 Seconds so they'll
| | 01:10 | only see it for that long and I'll hit Next,
then I select a friend to send it to
| | 01:15 | and then I'll tap Send.
| | 01:17 | It's going to tell me here that my poke
was sent and the friend you selected
| | 01:21 | will see your poke for 5 Seconds.
| | 01:22 | If they take screenshots, you'll see a flash
icon which means they're just capturing
| | 01:27 | that moment for themselves.
| | 01:30 | In the end poke is just a quick and easy chat
application that allows you to send
| | 01:35 | expiring messages to people to just
sort of entertain yourself.
| | 01:38 | There is no real purpose to this application whatsoever
other than an entertainment purpose.
| | 01:43 | You don't get to interact with anyone
like you do on regular Facebook.
| | 01:46 | And you don't get to share anything
that sticks around for very long.
| | 01:49 | After all you set the expiration date
for each piece of this.
| | 01:52 | At the top here you can go to the settings and
you can Log Out, clear your inbox, Report/Block
| | 01:57 | somebody, go into the Help Center, go
an Privacy or Legal and Cancel as well.
| | 02:01 | Here on the right-hand side your refresh button,
which is going to refresh your poke inbox.
| | 02:07 | So as you can see, this application is
fairly simple and fairly straightforward
| | 02:11 | and it's a great little fun way to interact with
people on Facebook but it isn't necessarily
| | 02:16 | a part of the overall Facebook ecosystem.
| | 02:18 | Poke exists only inside the Poke application
and is its own stand-alone Facebook product.
| | 02:24 | So if you'd like to download it and try it;
see if your other friends are using it;
| | 02:27 | be my guest, explore it and have a little fun.
