Introduction
Welcome
00:04Hi! My name is Justin Seeley and I'm a staff author here at lynda.com.
00:08I'd like to welcome you to Up and Running with Facebook.
00:11This course is meant to give you the basic tools that you need to get started using Facebook
00:15as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
00:18We'll begin by walking you through the steps of creating a new account, including adding
00:21a profile picture and setting up your Facebook timeline.
00:25From there, I'll break down some basic terminology that will help you understand the ins and
00:28outs of Facebook as we continue throughout the course.
00:31We will also cover things like building your Friends list, sending and receiving personal
00:36messages, working with Facebook news feeds, and also how to share things like photos and videos as well.
00:45Finally, I'll wrap things up by showing you how you can access Facebook from anywhere
00:49by using your mobile or tablet device.
00:52By the end of this course I hope that you'll have a better understanding of what Facebook
00:55is all about and how you can use it to enhance your online social life.
00:59I'm really excited to start showing you all of this.
01:02So if you're ready, let's get you up and running with Facebook.

1. Getting Started
What is Facebook?
00:00You can't go anywhere these days without hearing the word Facebook.
00:03However, many people that have heard of Facebook still don't know exactly what it is.
00:08So what is Facebook?
00:10Well, simply put, Facebook is a website that allows you to connect and interact with people
00:14like friends, family, and coworkers.
00:17The core of Facebook revolves around sharing.
00:20Whether that's sharing a short statement telling people what you had for breakfast or sharing
00:24photos from your wedding day.
00:26Facebook allows you to share any and all aspects of your life in a unique digital way.
00:31But it's not just about connecting and sharing with people you already know. You can use
00:35Facebook as a tool for finding like-minded individuals through things like groups and
00:39interacting with your favorite brands and public figures on their Facebook fan pages as well.
00:44For many people their schedules are simply too hectic to stay in constant contact with
00:48friends and family.
00:49Facebook provides a quick bird's-eye view of all of the activity swirling around you
00:54and also provides you with tools to pay closer attention to the people who matter most.
00:59Ultimately, Facebook is about connecting you with the people and information you deem are
01:04more important, and helping you stay connected with them in a variety of different ways and
01:09on a variety of different devices as well.

Setting up your account
00:00You can access Facebook in your web browser by visiting www.facebook.com.
00:06That's facebook.com. And once the page is loaded you'll be prompted to either Sign In or Sign
00:13Up for a new account.
00:15I'm going to assume that you're completely new to Facebook and that we need to set you up with an account.
00:19So on the right-hand side you'll see this section here labeled Sign Up. This is
00:22where you enter in all of your personal information to start your new Facebook account.
00:27So let's go ahead and do that now.
00:28I'll type in my First Name, my Last Name, my Email address, and then you have to re-enter
00:35your Email address for verification purposes.
00:38Next, you'll have to select a Password.
00:41Chances are you have a favorite password that you use, but I'd like to ask you to please
00:45you something a little bit more secure, because as Facebook continues to impede more and more
00:49on all the aspects of our digital life it's important that we protect our information
00:53and our accounts from those who might try to cause us 'digital harm.'
00:57My suggestion is to use an alphanumeric password that incorporates both upper and lower case letters.
01:02If you need some help try a service like strongpasswordgenerator.com.
01:05After you've selected your password, go ahead and type it in, and then underneath that you'll
01:11be able to tell Facebook whether or not you're male or female.
01:14You'll also be able to select your Birthday.
01:17So you enter in the Month, the Day, and of course the Year.
01:25You may be asking why does Facebook need me to provide my birthday here?
01:29Well, you have to provide your birthday so that Facebook can ensure the authenticity
01:33of your account and also so that it will provide you with age-appropriate content through ads and other media.
01:39Basically, it's a safeguard against showing anything inappropriate to younger audiences.
01:44Once all of your information has been entered, you can click the green Sign-Up button.
01:49Once you click Sign-Up you'll be taken to this next screen where it takes you through
01:52three steps to complete your profile.
01:55On the very first screen it says Step 1 Find your friends.
01:59So basically this screen is saying, okay, based on the email address that you gave me,
02:03I'm going to attempt to find people in your Contact List that you can then add as friends
02:08here on Facebook.
02:10Now in this case you can use Gmail, Windows Live Hotmail, Yahoo!
02:13or any other type of email service to attempt to find people that you want to be friends with.
02:18But for the sake of this course I'm going to skip this step, because we're going to
02:22devote an entire movie later on to building our Friends List and finding people that we might know.
02:27So in this case I'll just click Skip this step, Facebook comes up with this fun message
02:31that says people who complete this step usually find up to 20 friends and Facebook is a lot
02:36more fun with friends.
02:38Are you sure you want to skip this step?
02:40For now I'll go ahead and click Skip.
02:42If you skip to Step 2 you get to enter in some of your Profile Information like where
02:46you went to high school, where you went to college, and also who you currently work for.
02:51So you can enter this information, where you went to school and your employer. By entering
02:55in this information you're giving Facebook more chances of finding people that you know.
03:01If you happen to skip this step for now then you'll be taken to the very next step,
03:05which is adding your Profile Picture.
03:07If you choose to enter this information and click Save and Continue, you'll be taken to
03:11a screen that says something like "Here are some people that you might know based on the
03:15information you just entered here."
03:17So if you want to enter in this information and hit Save and Continue, go ahead.
03:21If not, you can click Skip and go directly to the next section to enter in your Profile Picture.
03:26So I'll click Skip, and it takes me here.
03:29Now you have two options for taking a Profile Picture, you can Upload a Photo from your
03:33computer or you can Take a Photo using the built-in web cam if you choose to.
03:37In this case I'm just going to Upload a photo.
03:40It's going to bring me to this little box telling me to select an image from my computer.
03:44It can only be 4 MB in size, and I'll click Choose File, and on my desktop inside of my
03:49Assets folder there is a me.jpg and I'll hit Open.
03:54Once the photo has been uploaded, it will appear right here on the left, and if you like it
03:58you can click Save and Continue.
04:02Clicking Save and Continue will take you to this screen where it welcomes you to Facebook
04:06and allows you to start searching your email list for Friends that are already on Facebook
04:11and also using another service called Find people you may know.
04:14We're going to cover both of these in depth in later movies.
04:18You may also notice a yellow bar across the top of the screen that tells you to go to
04:23your email address and complete the sign-up process.
04:26So what you'll need to do is go to your email, whatever that may be, Gmail or your email
04:30client, whatever, and there will be a confirmation email inside of that and you can click the
04:35Activation Link inside of that email to confirm your Facebook account and you'll be ready to continue on.
04:41So jump over into your email, open up that email account, there should be a link to click
04:45on to confirm this.
04:48Click on that, confirm it, and then come right back and continue learning.

Understanding Facebook timeline
00:00One of the terms that you're going to hear me talk about a lot during this course is
00:03something called the Facebook timeline.
00:06In this movie I'm going to be exploring the Facebook timeline and showing you exactly
00:10what it is and why it's such a good thing.
00:14If you go to facebook.com/about/timeline, you'll actually be taken to the Facebook timeline
00:19page that explains to you exactly what timeline is.
00:23This page is actually really good and has a lot of videos and information on it, which
00:27are great for learning the ins and outs of the Facebook timeline itself.
00:32You'll notice as you start to scroll down the page that it tells you that the Facebook
00:35timeline is a way to tell your life story in a new kind of social profile.
00:40Up until recently Facebook used something called a Wall and a Profile Page to let you
00:45interact with people.
00:46Well, now they display everything in sort of this chronological timeline layout that
00:51really showcases events and things that happen in your life, like when you get a new job,
00:56or when you get married, or when you leave a job, or even when you end a relationship.
01:01So Facebook timeline is a chronological representation of your online lifestyle.
01:06So let's scroll down to the page and you can see here that it explains exactly what your cover photo is.
01:13That's the area behind your profile page right there, and as we continue to scroll down, you
01:18can see here that it indicates what stories are.
01:21So stories are the things that pop up on your timeline such as memorable posts, photos, and
01:26life events like getting married or starting a new job, and this is where you can tell your
01:30story from the beginning, to middle, to all the way up to now.
01:35So we scroll down, you can all these examples of things like when someone became friends
01:39with somebody else, when someone was checking into a certain restaurant,
01:45when they liked a new page, or when they moved or started a new job somewhere, all kinds
01:50of things pop up.
01:51You'll also see references to apps.
01:54Facebook has a lot of applications that interact with it.
01:58So therefore you can see things like when people watch movies on various services if
02:03they use apps to track things like runs or walks, anything that interfaces with Facebook.
02:09If you've seen that little button where it says Sign In with Facebook on anything like
02:12an application or another website, that is an app that hooks into Facebook and then publishes
02:17information to your timeline to show things like songs that you play, activities that
02:23you like, all different types of stuff can be used here.
02:26At the bottom it shows you a little bit more about the timeline.
02:29So it tells you that once you get timeline, you'll have seven days before anyone else can see it.
02:33This gives you a chance to get your timeline looking the way you want it before other people see it.
02:38So this is assuming of course that you have an old Facebook account and you're wanting
02:42to convert it over to the new timeline.
02:44When you first set up a Facebook Account, you've already got timeline.
02:47So you don't have to worry about that.
02:49You can also decide what to highlight in your timeline.
02:52When we talk about filling that out, I'll show you how to highlight different things.
02:56Highlighting basically means you make a post bigger or more prominent so that people see
03:00that a little bit clearer as opposed to the other posts in your timeline.
03:04You can also through Privacy Controls control who sees what on your timeline.
03:10So if you only want to share a post with a certain group of people, you can do so.
03:13If you want to hide everything from the world, you can do that.
03:17Or if you want to just be as public about it as you can be and live life on the edge,
03:21you can do that as well.
03:23So if you want a little bit more explanation of these sections, you can actually click
03:26here on these links at the bottom and they will take you to those respective sections
03:30so you can see those, and you can also watch an instructional video on how timeline works as well.
03:36So this is a great little learning center and again it's at facebook.com/about/timeline
03:42and it's really going to help you understand what timeline is and how you can use it to
03:47display everything that's going on in your online world.
Collapse this transcript
Filling out your timeline
00:00Once you've confirmed your account via email you'll be taken to a screen that looks something like this.
00:06Once you're on this screen it's time to start filling out your Facebook timeline.
00:10As we discussed in the previous movie the Facebook timeline is where you put in events
00:15and different things that you want to share with the world.
00:18So from this screen or from anywhere on Facebook you have multiple ways of getting to your
00:22personal timeline.
00:23You can click this link over here on the left or you can simply come up here and click this
00:27link in the top bar as well.
00:29When you hover over, it might say profile, but that's actually taking you to your timeline page.
00:34So let's go ahead and click this link here on the left and that's going to take me to
00:38my timeline and you'll notice here that it tells me Welcome to Your Timeline.
00:42This is your place to collect and share the photos, experiences, and life events that
00:46tell your story on Facebook.
00:48It's also telling me to take a brief tour.
00:50If you'd like to take a tour of this, you can click Start Tour, and it's going to talk
00:56you about your cover photo, telling you to start with a photo that basically says something
01:00about yourself or gives someone an idea of what you're all about.
01:05So the cover photo needs to be pretty large and it will go directly behind your profile photo.
01:10Once you've read all this, you can click Next.
01:13It's going to tell you to add in some of your basic information like where you work, where
01:16you went to school, and where you're from.
01:20Then you can tell your story.
01:22This means sharing things like status updates, photos, places you check into, and various life events.
01:28We will discuss these later on in their own individual movies.
01:32So for now let's just hit End Tour.
01:36Once I click End Tour, it's going to take me back to my timeline and it gives me the
01:41option to add things like cover photos, visit my about view, or find friends.
01:46In this case I am just going to click Close for now, and I'm going to worry about adding in
01:51information into my timeline.
01:53So I am going to go first to Add where you work.
01:56So I'll click this and then I am just going to type out my employer's name. So lynda.com.
02:01If your employer has a presence on Facebook, they might show up.
02:05So I'll go ahead and click lynda.com, I'll add in my position, and in the city right
02:11there I'll say that I currently work here.
02:14I'll add the year where I started, which was this year.
02:17I can also add the month, and I'll click Add Work.
02:22I am then going to click Add my school.
02:26So my high school, so I will search for Murray High School and I will find the one, Murray
02:30High School, Murray Kentucky.
02:32If your school doesn't show up, that's okay.
02:34You can just type in a name.
02:36Then I'll type in Murray, Kentucky, that's where I am from originally, and class of 2002.
02:43Then I will hit Add School. So there it is.
02:48I'm born June, 26, 1984, I work at lynda.com, and I studied at Murray High School, and now
02:55finally I'll add my hometown, where did I grow up?
02:58Murray, Kentucky.
03:00And where do I currently live?
03:02That'll be Ventura, California.
03:05And I'll click Add City.
03:07Once I do that it says right here all of my information, born June 26, 1984, works at
03:13lynda.com, studied at Murray High School, I'm from Murray, Kentucky.
03:17You'll also notice as I scroll through here that I have some events that pop up in my timeline.
03:22For instance, when I added my profile picture, that's listed there. My activity, where I changed my residence.
03:29I can also see when I joined Facebook.
03:31At the bottom you can see when I was born and they have this nice little baby icon indicating when I was born.
03:36So if you wanted to highlight that, which it's highlighted like this, you could add a photo to this.
03:40So maybe one of your baby pictures or something like that, you could add in just to give people
03:44an idea of what happened that day.
03:47Let's go back up to the top and let's click right here on the About section.
03:51When I click that, it's going to take me to the About area where I can edit things like
03:55Work and Education.
03:57So if I want to edit this to add in where I went to college for instance, I could click
04:00Edit and I could add my college, Murray State University, there we go.
04:08I could add my year.
04:11So I'll add my year right there.
04:15My Concentration, which is the same thing as a major.
04:19There we go, and I'll click add school.
04:23So now there it is.
04:26My Living situation, it's got where I live currently and where I'm from.
04:30You could add in any number of places.
04:32So if you've moved a few times, you can add that in.
04:35Relationships and Families, so you can add in stuff like your wife, your brother, your
04:39sister, your mother, your father, anybody like that.
04:42So once you start adding people to your Friends list, you can actually click Edit and you
04:46can find people and then relate to them based on your relationship, like wife, brother, sister et cetera.
04:52Let's go back over here to the right, you can see here my history by year.
04:56So 2012 I started working at lynda.com.
04:592002, I graduated from high school.
05:011984, I was born.
05:02So that sort of gives you some chronological representation of your life so far. About You.
05:08So you can write a little bit about yourself.
05:12So here I just put Iam the author of Up and Running with Facebook for lynda.com.
05:16So I'll click Save.
05:17There is my little About message.
05:20So my basic info, when I was born, whether or not I'm Male or Female, I can add my Languages
05:28as well as other information.
05:30So here when I click Edit, I can choose whether or not to Show my full birthday, Show only
05:36month & day, Don't show my birthday on my timeline.
05:40I'm also either Interested In Men or Women, Relationship Status, you have several options
05:46here, Single, In a relationship, Engaged, Married, It's complicated, In an open relationship,
05:53Widowed, Separated, Divorced, civil union, or domestic partnership.
05:57So in this case, I am Married.
05:59So it gives you the opportunity here to add in your spouse, if you choose to.
06:03I am not going to do that now, but you could enter in your spouse, especially if they're on Facebook.
06:07That way you can show everyone that you're married.
06:10If you speak more than one language, you can enter that in here.
06:13If you would like to express your religious beliefs, you can do so from this section here,
06:16and of course at the very bottom also provide you a way to show your political views as well.
06:21Now you also notice as you're filling out things on Facebook that you'll see this little
06:25globe icon over here on the right- hand side with a little arrow next to it.
06:29Each and every time you see this, this means that you have the ability to control who this
06:33is being shown to on Facebook.
06:35So if you want to tweak who can see individual pieces of your Facebook timeline, you just
06:41click on this and then you can say I want it to be Public, that means anybody can see
06:46it, I want it to be seen only by friends, I want it to be seen only by me, or I would
06:50like to customize who gets to see them.
06:53Now we are going to cover how to customize who gets to see what, a little bit later on this course.
06:58But for now I am just going to leave all of this on public so that if you happen to find
07:01this page on Facebook, you could actually see all of this information that I've entered
07:06in into the course.
07:07But I understand that not everybody wants to show everything on their Facebook timeline.
07:12So anytime you want to hide something, just set it to Only Me, or if you only want to show
07:16it friends, just set it to Friends, and then once you're finished with that just hit
07:20Save, any changes you make will automatically be applied to your timeline, and you can continue working.
07:25Now you can also edit your contact information.
07:28Now you will notice something in the email section right here.
07:31It's that Facebook has changed your email from the default email of whatever you entered
07:35in when you first started to something like Justin.seeley.7773@facebook.com.
07:42This is technically your Facebook email address.
07:45Everybody gets a Facebook address when you sign up for a new Facebook account, and basically
07:50what this allows people to do, if they send you an email to this, it will show up
07:53in your Facebook messages inbox.
07:56So if you'd like to keep this, you can keep it there.
07:58If you'd like to switch it back to your old email address, hit Edit.
08:03Then right here you'll see the Facebook email and your original email right here.
08:07So in order to make this email show over this one, just come over here to the right, choose
08:13Hidden from Timeline and then here choose Show on Timeline.
08:17If you don't want either one of these emails to be shown, just hit Hide from Timeline on
08:21both of them and neither one will be shown.
08:24You can also add things like your mobile phone number or your work number, any of your instant
08:29messaging screen names,
08:30so if you use AOL Instant Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo!
08:33Messenger, et cetera, you can add those in.
08:35You can also add things like your Twitter name.
08:37So if you're on Twitter, you could choose Twitter right there, and then you could choose
08:41the Twitter name, just like that.
08:45If you wanted to add in your address, so in this case I'll just add in the city where
08:49I live and the ZIP code.
08:53You can also add in any websites that you might have.
08:57So if you do have a website, you can point people there and then you can click Save.
09:02Once you do that the information will be saved to your timeline, you can see the Address,
09:06the Screen Name, and when you hover over it, you'll see that it takes me to Twitter,
09:12and Website takes me to that website.
09:15The final piece of this puzzle is your Favorite Quotations.
09:18If you have any favorite quotations, you can add those in here.
09:21So if I click Edit, I can type in something like that, hit Save, and there is my favorite quote.
09:31So once I'm finished with all of this information, I've essentially finished filling out the
09:36main parts of my Facebook timeline.
09:38So if I come up here and I click Done Editing, everything there snaps into place, everywhere
09:44else should be completed as well.
09:46So I can click my name again and it takes me back to my timeline.
09:51Once I'm back on my timeline, you'll see things like my university that I've added, my hometown,
09:57and if I scroll back through my timeline, you can see here, here's when I started working
10:00at lynda.com, here's when I graduated from college, here's when I graduated from high
10:05school, here's when I was born, et cetera.
10:08So as you start to add in these life events and adding in all this information, you really
10:13start to build up a chronological representation of your life for people to see and get to
10:19know you better online here on Facebook.
10:23So hopefully by now you have a better understanding of how to edit your timeline and how to fill
10:27out the information on your timeline here on Facebook.
10:30So take the time and fill it out as much as you can, because the more you fill out here
10:36the more people will know about you and the more people will interact with you and share
10:40with you in the future.

Adding a cover photo
00:00One of the coolest parts of Facebook's new timeline design is the fact you can add something
00:05called a Cover Photo.
00:06The Cover Photo is this large photo that lives behind your profile photo up here at the top of your Profile.
00:12And in order to add a Cover Photo all you have to do is simply click Add Cover Photo,
00:18and once you do that it tells you you need to pick a unique photo from your life to feature
00:21at the top of your timeline.
00:23It says this is not a space meant for banner ads or other promotions.
00:26Please don't use content that is commercial, promotional, copyright infringing, or already
00:31in use on other people's covers.
00:33Basically, it needs to be a unique photograph that represents something about you. So hit OK.
00:39You then can choose from your photos that you've already uploaded to Facebook, or you can
00:43Upload your own photo.
00:44In this case we're going to upload a photo.
00:46Let's say for instance that you're interested in classic cars.
00:49Well, I'll hit Upload Photo and then inside of my Assets folder is a classic_car.jpg. I'll open it up.
00:56Facebook automatically uploads it for me.
00:58I don't have to do anything else. And then it puts it into place.
01:02I can then reposition it by clicking and dragging, and once I get it right where I want it to
01:07be, I'll click Save Changes.
01:10When I click Save Changes, Facebook is then going to crop the photo and place it right
01:14there as my Cover Image.
01:17So as I scroll down you can see it's got the full image in there, and if I refresh my timeline,
01:23I'll also see a nice little news story about that telling people that I've updated my Cover
01:29Photo, which also invites them to come and look at it on my profile.
01:34So again, the Cover Photo is a great way to express yourself and give people a little
01:38bit more insight into what you're all about.
01:40So pick something unique, pick something that represents you, and pick something fun.
01:44This is your space to do with what you want.

Facebook friends explained
00:00In this movie we're going to be exploring Friends on Facebook.
00:04A Friend on Facebook is anybody that you happen to connect with.
00:07When you add someone as a Friend you're requesting to connect with them, have access to their
00:12profile, updates, and everything else.
00:14When you accept a Friend Request from someone, you're allowing someone to connect with you.
00:19You can add or accept anyone that you wish.
00:22You don't really have to consider them to be a friend in real life, necessarily.
00:26That's the beauty of Facebook.
00:28It's in online social community that doesn't require you to actually know these people
00:32outside of this ecosystem.
00:34So if you happen to find a celebrity or someone that you've always admired their work or something
00:39like that and you find them on Facebook, feel free to add them as a friend.
00:43They can control whether or not they accept the request.
00:46They could also control what post that you're allowed to see based on their privacy controls.
00:51It's a great way to get access to people in a non-intrusive way.
00:55As we continue through this course I'm going to give you lots of different ways to find
00:58people to interact with on Facebook, including finding people you may already know, and also
01:03ways to interact with people that you don't know.
01:06But for now I just wanted to explain the concept of what a friend is.
01:10You see here on my screen I have several 'friends' on my Friends page.
01:15These people may be people that I work with, they could be people I'm related to.
01:19It doesn't matter who they are, they're all considered Friends within this ecosystem.
01:24I can visit their profile at any time by clicking their name or simply by hovering over it to
01:28see exactly who they are, where they work, and if we have any Mutual Friends in common.
01:33This is a great way of determining your relationship to these people and the degrees of separation
01:38between you and other people.
01:40So as you continue to Explore Facebook try adding some Friends.
01:44Don't be afraid to add people as friends.
01:47You'll be surprised in this online space how willing people are to say, "Oh yeah, sure,
01:51I know you, therefore I'm willing to be your friend."
01:54Like I said, you don't have to know these people outside of the ecosystem.
01:58It's not as if you're having to invite them over for dinner every Friday night or something like that.
02:02They're merely seeing your posts, you're seeing their posts, and you're all interacting in
02:06one large social environment.

Exploring Facebook groups
00:00In addition to finding people that you already know on Facebook, you can also find and interact
00:06with other like-minded individuals through something called Facebook Groups.
00:10In this movie, I'll be exploring Facebook Groups, how you can create one, and also how
00:14you can join some that already exist.
00:16So let's talk about groups.
00:17They're found over here on the left, and if you wanted to create a group all you have
00:21to do is click Create Group.
00:23When you do that you can create a shared group for you and some of your friends, like movie
00:27night buddies, sports teams, siblings, or book clubs. Or let's say that we want to create
00:32one for this course.
00:34So I'll choose Up and Running with Facebook.
00:39Members, which people do you want to add to the group?
00:42If I wanted to add John Smith, I can add him to the group.
00:48I could also add some of my other friends, like my wife.
00:55Once I've added these people in, I can also choose the Privacy options for the group.
00:59I'm going to put Open. Anyone can see this group, who's in it, and what members post.
01:04So once I do that, I'll create the group and then I'll get to choose an icon for the group as well.
01:11So in this case I'm going to find an icon that I think is pretty cool, this little
01:15icon here, and I'll hit Okay.
01:19That now takes me to the Group page. And it says, a new feature, Easily see who is in the
01:25group, that's this big timeline of people across the top.
01:27So I hit Okay, and there we go.
01:31I can post something to the group, like "Welcome to the group!
01:35Let's talk about Facebook," and I'll click Post.
01:40Now this is only displayed inside of the group and people can comment on it, like it, reply
01:45to it or whatever they want to do.
01:47You can also control the About information for the group, so you can Add a Description,
01:52you can send a Message to all of the members, you can Add People, or Find a Member if you
01:57have a lot of members.
01:59You can create group Events.
02:00So if you're having a meetup or something like that you can create an event for this group.
02:04You can upload Photos for the group.
02:07You can also upload Files for the group.
02:09So you could actually have a workgroup here on Facebook and exchange documents with each other.
02:14It's pretty neat.
02:16I'll go back to the Up and Running with Facebook group, and I can also do a search up here at
02:21the top if I want to find a group that I want to join.
02:25So let's say for instance that I'm interested in photography. I'll type out photography,
02:30and you can see that it gives me a list of Pages, Apps, et cetera.
02:36I can go down here to See more results, and once I do that I can go down on the left and
02:43search for groups.
02:45And so here's a Photography group, it has 12,000 members, and so I can join this group
02:52because it says Open Group.
02:53Any of the groups that say Open, you're allowed to just go ahead and join.
02:57If it's a closed group you'll have to send a request to join, then someone will have to approve you.
03:02If you want to join the group you simply click Join Group.
03:06Once you've joined the group you're able to see all of the posts, interact with the members,
03:10see their events, everything.
03:12It's a great way to find other people that are interested in the same stuff you are and
03:16start a conversation.
03:17So as you continue to explore Facebook, check out the Groups feature, and hopefully that
03:21will expand your online social life.

Exploring Facebook Chat
00:00A great way to interact with people in real time on Facebook is to use something called Facebook Chat.
00:06Facebook Chat is located in the bottom right-hand side of your Facebook window.
00:11If you're offline, which I currently am, you can activate Facebook Chat by clicking on
00:15it, and you will automatically be placed online.
00:18Any one of your friends who is online currently will have a green dot next to them, indicating
00:22you can then start a conversation with that person.
00:26If the person has a Mobile Phone icon next to them, that means that they're able to receive
00:30messages that you send to them via their mobile device.
00:34They can then choose to go online or simply reply to you via a message on their mobile device.
00:41You can also go to the Chat Options from this section, turn on and off Chat Sounds, Go Offline
00:48or choose Advanced Settings.
00:50When you choose Advanced Settings you get to determine your chat settings for all of Facebook.
00:55So you can say, All of your friends see you except for individual names, Only some friends
01:00see me or No one sees me.
01:03So it's a way of going incognito.
01:06You can hit Save to save those changes and there you go.
01:09At any given time you can look down at the bottom-right and see how many of your friends
01:12are currently online.
01:14If you wish to start a conversation, click the Chat, click the person, type a message,
01:20and then simply hit Enter to commit to that.
01:23If the person has a web cam-enabled computer and you have one as well, you can also start
01:28a video call with that person as well.
01:30If you wish to close a conversation just click on the X.
01:34That closes the conversation and minimizes the Chat window.
01:37Anytime you want to bring it back, just click and it reappears.
01:43Clicking away from the Chat box will also close it as well.
01:46So, the next time you log in to Facebook, check out the Chat window and see who's online.
01:50It's a great way to start a conversation without actually posting anything on someone's timeline.

What is a like?
00:00One of the terms that you're going to hear all the time when people refer to Facebook
00:03is the term Like.
00:06A Like is a simple way to let your friends know that you like something that they've posted.
00:11It can be an update, a note, a photo. or whatever.
00:14All you have to do is find the item that you wish to Like, so in this case a Status Update,
00:20or a photo, find the Like link underneath it and then click.
00:26You'll notice you get a little pop up saying, Like this item.
00:29When you click Like, it automatically adds a little thumbs-up, and indicates that You like this.
00:35As you start to like things on Facebook, people would be able to see the things that you like,
00:39and they will be aggregated on your Facebook timeline as well.
00:42In addition to liking posts, photos, and status updates that your friends make, you can also
00:47like individual pages of brands and businesses as well.
00:51So let's say for instance that you found the lynda.com Facebook page.
00:55If you want to like lynda.com, you can click the Like button right here, and now you have Liked lynda.com.
01:02So when other people come to the lynda.com page, they can see how many of their friends like this page.
01:07It's a great way of crowd sourcing information and getting to know who approves of what in
01:12the Facebook ecosystem.
01:14So as we continue with the course, remember, Like is a very quick and easy way of giving
01:19a thumbs-up to say that you like something, pretty simple.

3. Building Your Friends List
Finding your friends
00:00One of the pillars of the Facebook experience is your Friends, finding people who you want
00:06to share and interact with online.
00:08In this movie, I'm going to be exploring how to find your friends on Facebook and then
00:11how to add them as a Friend going forward.
00:14So in order to find Friends you can use this button right up here at the top-right that
00:18says Find Friends, and once you click that you'll be presented with a bunch of information
00:23on how to find people that you might know.
00:26Now the first part here is asking you whether or not you want to upload your email contact
00:29list to Facebook.
00:31Now I have my reservations about this because I'm pretty protective over the information
00:35that I share online.
00:37If you would like to upload your contact list using one of these services, be my guest.
00:41But down here at the bottom there's a section called Other Tools, and so if you filled out
00:46your timeline correctly with your current workplace, where you went to school etcetera,
00:51you can actually find friends by your Coworkers, Classmates, from College and High School, as
00:56well as Friends, Classmates, and Coworkers all at the same time.
01:00So in this case, let's say that I wanted to find some coworker friends from lynda.com.
01:03I'll click on Find Coworkers From lynda.com, and when I do that it's going to automatically
01:10search for people who are currently employed by lynda.com.
01:14And so I can find people here and add them as friends.
01:20After you found a couple of people that you might want to add as friends and click the
01:24Add Friend button, you will see that it says +1 Friend Request Sent next to their name.
01:30As of right now you're not friends with these folks on Facebook yet.
01:34They have to actually accept your friend request.
01:37That's why it's important to invite people to be friends that you actually know in person,
01:42because if they don't know you chances are they're going to ignore your request.
01:47But even after you sent them a friend request, you are technically what is called subscribed
01:51to their updates. Therefore these people, anything they post publicly to Facebook, you will be able to see.
01:58A lot of celebrities are starting to do this, they're opening up their Facebook profile
02:02to subscriptions, so they're not necessarily going to accept you as a friend where you
02:06can send them messages and interact with them on a one-on-one basis, but you can still see
02:10their everyday updates and things that they post publicly to Facebook, so that's kind of cool.
02:15Now in this case I've only searched for people that are coworkers of mine at lynda.com.
02:19I can also search for people from my Hometown, from my Current City, from my High School
02:24or from my College as well.
02:26Based on what options you click here, Facebook will automatically start to add people to
02:30this list of potential friends. As you see people that you want to be friends with, simply
02:35click Add Friend out to the right and then play the waiting game to see whether or not
02:39they accept your Friend Request.
02:42The final way to find a friend on Facebook is to simply come up here to the Search bar
02:46and try to find that person.
02:49So for instance, if I wanted to find somebody that I work with, that I know, I can simply
02:53type in their name.
02:55So if I wanted to find Deke McClelland, I could simply type in 'Deke' and Deke pops up.
03:01When you click this link, it takes me to Deke's Facebook page and I can then click Add Friend
03:07to send a request.
03:10Once you've done that, you can simply go back to your profile anytime you want by clicking
03:14here, or go back to the Facebook News Feed by clicking here on the left-hand side.
03:20Once you're back inside of the Facebook News Feed you'll start to see things pop up here
03:24as people start to post different things that have accepted your friend request.
03:29If nobody has accepted your friend request and they are not allowing subscriptions on
03:33their timeline, chances are you're not going to see anything here.
03:37In the event that someone accepts your friend request here on Facebook, you will see a notification
03:42at the top like this.
03:44Once you see that you'll notice that someone has accepted your friend request. They'll
03:48also invite you to either write on their Wall or post on their timeline.
03:52You can choose See All to see all of the people who have accepted your friend request, or to
03:56close this notification, simply click this icon here.
Collapse this transcript
Accepting and rejecting friend requests
00:00As you continue to expand your friends list here on Facebook and also as you continue
00:04to fill out your timeline information, you'll find that other people start to find you, and
00:09in this case they may send you a Friend Request.
00:12Now a friend request basically means that this person wants to be your Friend on Facebook
00:17and interact with you, see the things you post, you see the things they post, and you're
00:21able to also send and receive private messages between one another.
00:25When someone sends you a friend request, you will see a little red icon pop up in the top
00:30bar of Facebook that look like this.
00:32When you click on this, you'll see any pending Friend Requests that you might have.
00:36So in this case, I have two Friend Requests, and in order to deal with these, you can either
00:40confirm them or you can choose not to become friends with them right now.
00:45If you would like to explore this person's profile prior to accepting their Friend Request,
00:50you can take your mouse and click on their name, and it will jump directly to that person's timeline.
00:55So for instance, if I wanted to see John Smith's profile, I'll click on it, it takes me to John
01:00Smith's page and I can see everything from his cover photo to all of his information,
01:04I can see where he works.
01:06Everything about him that he's shared publicly, including some of his status updates, I can
01:11see that from this page.
01:13You'll also notice that I have something at the top that says Respond to Friend Request.
01:17So anytime I want to respond to this friend request, I can simply click here and I can
01:22choose to Confirm it or I can delete the request.
01:25So in this case, I'll go ahead and confirm John as a Friend, and so now, I am friends
01:31with John. Anything that he posts, I'll be able to see in my news feed, and anything I
01:35post, he'll be able to see in his news feed as long as that's public facing information.
01:42Now if you have any other Friend Requests that you might not want to accept, you can go up
01:45to this little Friend Request icon again and see those.
01:49If you click Not Now, that's going to automatically hide the request. If you don't want this person
01:55to be able to send you a request ever again, it asks you here, do you know this person
02:00outside of Facebook, and you can actually say No.
02:04Once you click No, this person will not be able to send you any more friend request from here on out.
02:10So once you do that, you can click away from it and it will go away.
02:14Once you've finished accepting or ignoring your Friend Requests, you can go back to Facebook
02:18by clicking on the link in the top left, and it takes you to your News Feed.
02:23Once you get back to the News Feed, you may also see this suggestion box pop up across
02:27the top with various people that you may or may not know at the very top.
02:33So you can close this with a little X, or you can start to add these people as friends based
02:37upon other people that you've added as friends previously, or any information that you've
02:41added to your timeline. Different people will show up here at different times.
02:46So for now I'm just going to close this so that I don't see it anymore and then I'll
02:49look at my News Feed and you can see here, here's where John changed his picture, here's
02:53where John changed his cover photo, and also when he changed some of his information,
02:58when he bought his house, when he got married, all of these different things John has added
03:03to his timeline are now showing up in my News Feed, because John and I are now friends.
03:09So anytime you add a new friend or someone adds you as a friend, their information is
03:13automatically added to this News Feed for you to be able to see each and every time
03:18they post a new public update.
03:21So hopefully by now you have a better understanding of what a Friend Request is and also how to
03:25manage that, so that you can curate your Friends list anyway you see fit.
Collapse this transcript
Using "People You May Know"
00:00Another great way to find people that you want to add as Friends on Facebook is to use
00:04a feature called People You May Know.
00:08In order to use People You May Know, you need to be looking at your Facebook News Feed like
00:11I'm looking at here, and then on the right-hand side you'll see a list of people that you
00:15may or may not know.
00:17If you'd like to see the full list of people, you simply click See All on the right-hand side.
00:22Clicking See All takes you to the people you may know dashboard, or basically you can go
00:28in and curate everybody that you want to see or not see, and so you can base things off
00:34of mutual friends, home town, current city, high school, college, employer et cetera.
00:39Any of these people that you want to add as a Friend, you simply find them and then simply
00:45click Add Friend.
00:46So, if we click Add Friend on a couple of these, we can see now that I have sent them
00:52a friend request, and based off information that I've either entered in my profile, or information
00:58based upon who I'm Friends with already, or information on where I work or went to school,
01:03different people will show up here at different times depending on how much stuff I've actually
01:07put into my timeline.
01:09So, the next time you're on the Facebook News Feed page, take a look on that right-hand side
01:13to see the People You May Know section.
01:16There may be people that pop up there based on a status update that you put, or a new update
01:20that you've added to your timeline.
01:22So keep checking that out, and it's a great way to find extra friends that you might not
01:26have realized were on Facebook in the first place.
Collapse this transcript
Subscribing vs. friending
00:00Up until now we've been talking about how to add Friends inside of the Facebook ecosystem,
00:05but in addition to being able to add Friends, there's also something called Subscriptions
00:09that you're able to do as well.
00:11In some cases, people who live a public or more prominent lifestyle may choose to opt
00:16in to Facebook's subscription model, so that they don't have to deal with all of the impending
00:20Friend Requests that come in all the time.
00:23A lot of tech pundits and celebrities and people like that are starting to do this so
00:27that you're still connected to their "personal" account, but you only get to see the information
00:32that they publicly post.
00:34In order to subscribe to somebody you'll have to find their profile online.
00:39So for instance, this is my actual personal profile here on Facebook, and over to the right
00:45you can see there's two buttons, one to add me as a Friend and one to Subscribe.
00:50If I am not allowing people to add me as a Friend, this will not be available, but I
00:55will allow subscriptions.
00:56So, if you wanted to subscribe to the updates that I post you could simply click this right
01:00here, and you are now subscribed to my updates without having to send me a friend request.
01:06This means anything that I post that is publicly available, you will see in your News Feed.
01:11So if I share a photo, you'll see that. If I share a public status update, you'll see that as well.
01:16This eliminates the need for you to ask them whether or not you can see their updates and
01:21just automatically subscribes you to them.
01:24Now if you would like to enable subscriptions on your personal Facebook account, that's actually
01:29very easy to do as well. Let's go up here to this little arrow and click, and we'll go
01:34down to Account Settings.
01:37Inside of Account Settings, there is a Subscribers tab on the left. You click on that and you
01:42can then choose to Allow Subscribers. You'll see here that it tells you "Subscribers will
01:46receive your public posts and will not be added as friends, you can have broader conversations
01:51about public topics and keep personal updates only for friends."
01:55So, if you wanted to allow this, you could check that box, and now you are allowing people
02:01to subscribe to your profile. This does not mean you're friends, it does not mean that they're
02:06able to send you private messages or anything like that, but anything you post publicly,
02:10they will be able to read that and interact with it, Like it, et cetera.
02:15So, hopefully by now, you have a better understanding of the differences between adding someone
02:19as a Friend and subscribing to that person,, and also you should now know how to enable
02:24subscriptions on your profile as well.
Collapse this transcript
Sending and receiving private messages
00:00As you continue to build your Friends list, you may find the need to send people
00:04private messages.
00:05This is a conversation that is not publicly visible, only between you and the person you're
00:10sending the message to.
00:12There are many ways to send messages here on Facebook.
00:15The easiest way is to click on the Messages tab on the left hand side.
00:19Once you're inside of the Messages tab, you can click New Message and then simply type
00:23in the friend's name. So let say I wanted to type in John Smith.
00:27I can say, "Hi John, how are you today?"
00:31I can also attach a file or a photo to this as well.
00:36Right over here on the right, you can see this gives me the ability to send this to
00:39his mobile device if I want to.
00:40I'm going to uncheck that because I don't want to send him a message directly to his
00:44phone, just his Facebook account, then I'll hit Send.
00:48Once I do that it starts what's called a message thread.
00:51This message thread is going to show you each and every piece of the message as it goes.
00:56As John responds to me, you'll see that it pops up in the message thread, and there's
01:01also a little green dot next to John's name indicating that right now he is online.
01:05So therefore, I could actually turn this into a live chat session if I wanted to, by coming
01:10down to the chat icon on the bottom right, expanding it out, and seeing that John is online.
01:16There's my conversation, the same as it is in the message window.
01:19If I choose to respond, you can see that not only does it pop-up here inside the chat window,
01:24but it also pops up in the message thread as well.
01:27Anytime you want to close the chat window, just click the X and the chat window will close.
01:32If you don't like the chat window being open at all, you can click back on it, go to this
01:37little gear right here, and say Go Offline.
01:40That means that you're no longer in a live chat session and you're only dealing with
01:43the message thread.
01:44I find that the message thread is a much more convenient option for people, and it's also
01:48a little less intrusive than that chat window that keeps popping open.
01:52So far, I've sent John a message, he has replied, and then I replied back.
01:56Anytime John responds, you see that it pops up right there in the thread and I'm able
02:00to reply instantly from the box below.
02:04Private messages are a great way to have a conversation with someone on Facebook that
02:07is not public facing, so if you don't want to post a question or comment on their timeline,
02:13you can send them a private message like the one you see here, and you'll be able to communicate
02:17with them where only you and that person can see it.
02:21Anytime you're ready to leave the messaging window, you can simply click back on News
02:25Feed on the left, and you return right back to "regular Facebook" for you to continue
02:30browsing and sharing with others.

4. Working with the News Feed
Posting status updates
00:00Sharing things on Facebook is one of the most important things that you can do.
00:05This is how you communicate to other people in a public fashion and also how you start
00:09to chronicle your digital life.
00:11The most basic form of sharing on Facebook is something called the Status Update, and
00:16in this movie I'll be exploring the basic ways in which you can update your status.
00:21Now a status message could be as simple as "I'm going to the bank," or it could be as complex
00:26as a full blog post.
00:27Whatever it is, you can use Facebook to broadcast your thoughts at any given moment to the world.
00:34You'll notice when you're on the News Feed tab that you have this big status update window at the top.
00:39This allows you to say exactly what it says, What's on your mind?
00:43So for instance, if I wanted to type out what I'm doing right now, I could say, I'm recording
00:48a course for lynda.com.
00:52You'll also see that I get this pop up indicating I am allowed to tag other people in this post as well.
00:58Now I'm going to be explaining tagging a little bit later on in another movie, but just know
01:02that, let's say that my wife or my cousin or someone was sitting next to me here, and I
01:06had them as a friend on Facebook, I could actually click this button and add them to
01:10this post, indicating that they are indeed with me in the booth or with me wherever I happen to be.
01:17In this case I'm just going to hit OK, because I don't really want to do that.
01:21You'll also notice that it tells me that I can add a location to my post as well.
01:25This is going to base off your current location, it's going to use various settings via the
01:29internet to determine where you are in the world, and so you can add your current location to this.
01:35I'm going to choose Don't Add my Location for now.
01:38You'll also notice that I have the ability to Control privacy on this post, so right
01:42now it's a Public Post, and let me hit Done so you can actually see what's going on.
01:47If I click here, I get Public, Friends, Only Me, Custom, and then I also have some little
01:53lists down here, Close Friends, Family, and I can go view all of my lists.
01:57We'll discuss forming these lists a little bit later in another movie, but for now, just
02:01know that these are extra ways that you can curate who get to see what on Facebook.
02:06For now though, I'm going to leave this as a Public facing Post.
02:09I could restrict it to only my Friends, or let's say that I'm just leaving a note for myself,
02:13I could say Only Me, I'm the only one that's allowed to see this, but in most cases you're
02:18going to want this to be Public, I would think.
02:21When you're ready to post the status update, simply click Post.
02:26The people who have added you as a friend or have subscribed to your profile will automatically
02:30see this in their News Feed, and so you can see here that "I'm recording a course for lynda.com" now shows up.
02:37It tells me how long ago I posted this, I can also, if I was looking at this from someone
02:42else's perspective, I could Like it, I could Comment on it, or I could Re-Share it on my
02:47own profile if I wanted to.
02:50If you're unhappy with your status update, you can always click this X right here and
02:55the post will be deleted.
02:57Facebook will come up and ask you, are you sure that you want to delete this post. Clicking
03:01Delete will remove it from your timeline forever, clicking Cancel returns you to Facebook and
03:06allows you to keep the status message.
03:09If you're not on the Facebook News Feed tab, that's okay, you can still post status updates
03:14from a lot of different ways on Facebook.
03:16For instance, if I'm viewing my timeline, the first box on your timeline is always dedicated
03:22to Sharing, so this box here, I can post Status updates, share Photos, check into Places, and
03:27add Life Events as well.
03:29So if I wanted to add another status update here, all I have to do is come down, click
03:33in the box, and type it out.
03:36Once I type that out, I click Post, and it has been added to my timeline.
03:42As I said before, sharing things on Facebook is the way that you put your ideas out there,
03:47and the way that you get conversation started. It's a social network, so be social.
03:52Say what's on your mind, put some things out there, and see what kind of conversations you
03:56come up with.

Working with status comments
00:00As I said in the previous movie, sharing things is one of the essential parts of Facebook.
00:05And when you share status updates, people have the ability to add comments to those
00:09status updates in order to spark conversation or also give their opinion on your opinion.
00:14In this movie we'll be exploring the comments inside Facebook and how you can work with
00:18them, reply to them, and also manage them a little bit as well.
00:23So if someone comments on a Status Update that you've posted, you will receive an e-mail
00:27Notification most likely, and also, if you're logged into the Facebook site, a Notification
00:31right up here on this little globe icon.
00:34If you click that, you'll be able to see whoever has posted the comment, what they said, and
00:40when you click on it, you will actually be taken to the Comment to see all of the threaded
00:45comments that are available.
00:46So right now I said I'm recording a course for lynda.com.
00:50John has replied with "Awesome!
00:52Can't wait to watch it... What's it about?"
00:54If I want to reply to John, I can say, "I'm teaching people how to use Facebook."
01:00In order to commit to this, simply press Enter on your keyboard.
01:04When you do that, you've now posted a comment to his comment.
01:09John will receive a notification telling him that Justin Seeley has also commented on his status.
01:14And he will be able to see that and view it as well.
01:17If John wants to make a reply, he can do so, and then it will pop up immediately, just like this.
01:24So as is the case with Private messages, you get a threaded conversation of everything
01:28that's being posted.
01:29However, the difference between a status comment and a private conversation is just that.
01:35Status comments are all public facing, anybody who is my friend or who is subscribed to this
01:39post can see these updates and these comments as they come through.
01:44If it was a Private message, that would all stay between just me and whomever I'm messaging.
01:50In order to personalize the comments that you post, you can also use something called
01:54tagging to make it a little bit more personal.
01:57So if I wanted to direct a reply right at John, all I would have to do is type the at
02:01(@) symbol on my keyboard, start typing out John's name, and then select it, and then I
02:08could say, "I hope you enjoy the course."
02:11When I press Enter, you can see there that it links directly to John's profile, enabling
02:17whoever is looking at this to click on it and go to John's profile.
02:20But it also sends John a Notification letting him know that I have mentioned him in my comment.
02:28If John replies and tags me in a Post, you will also see that appear here as well.
02:32And I'll get a notification saying John mentioned me in a comment.
02:36This is a great way to personalize replies, especially in a crowded thread.
02:41So if you have 10 or 20 people replying to comments, it tends to get a little bit hectic.
02:46So using this little tagging system is a great way to easily reply to a specific person,
02:51while still keeping the conversation going in the public forum.
02:56As is the case with any public forum, there may come a time when you need to edit or modify
03:01a comment that you've posted in your comments thread.
03:05If at anytime you need to do that, you can hover over the comment, and find this little
03:08pencil icon, and click it.
03:11When you click that you have the ability to Edit or Delete the comment.
03:14If you choose to Edit the comment, you can actually just add something to the end of it.
03:19When you press Enter the comment is then edited.
03:22You will also see a link appears underneath where it says Edited.
03:26If you want to see the Edit History, you can click that and it will actually show you what
03:31the comment said originally and what the comment now says.
03:35You can then Close it and continue.
03:38If you need to remove a comment that someone has posted, you can hover over that comment and remove it.
03:45When you remove that comment, Facebook tells you the comment has been removed.
03:48You can undo this, report the comment as abusive, or block John Smith altogether.
03:54You may also give John Smith some feedback.
03:58In this case I'm going to undo this to bring the comment back.
04:01When I undo it, the comment comes right back as if it were never deleted before.
04:06Hopefully by now you have a better understanding of what comments are, how to use them, how
04:10to reply to them, and also how to moderate them should the need arise.

Liking and sharing status updates
00:00As you're browsing your Facebook News Feed, you may find status updates and items that
00:04you wish to express an opinion on.
00:06In which case, you'll need to learn how to Like, Comment, and Share those updates.
00:11For instance, if I want to reply to John Smith's update saying that he just got promoted, I
00:18could do it in one of three ways.
00:19I can Like this item, which essentially gives my stamp of approval to it in a public fashion.
00:25I could also add a comment to it, or I could reshare it on my timeline with a comment as well.
00:31Let's take a look at how all three of these work and how they're different.
00:35If I click Like, basically it just adds me as someone who likes this status update.
00:41I could also Comment on it as well.
00:43If I click Comment, it just simply puts a blinking cursor in the Comment box right here
00:48and allows me to write something.
00:50So if I say "Congrats John!"
00:53And press Enter, I have now commented on this status update.
00:57I can then also Share this, so if click Share, it asked me where I want to share it to?
01:03In this case I want to share it to my own timeline, and I can say "My friend John finally
01:10got his promotion!"
01:12And I can Share this Status.
01:14Once I do that I'll click Close and I'll go back to my timeline, and if I look in my timeline,
01:21I'll see here, Justin Seeley shared John Smith's status.
01:25My friend John finally got his promotion!
01:27And underneath there is his quoted status update right there.
01:31If I want to return back to the News Feed, I'll just click Facebook in the top left corner,
01:35it takes me right back.
01:37There is my latest Share that I just had right there, and I can Comment on this, Like it,
01:41or Share it as well.
01:44So as you continue to browse things inside of your Facebook News Feed, things that you
01:47might just want to give a quick thumbs-up to, just click the Like button.
01:51Things you might want to reply to or give your opinion on, you probably want to leave
01:55a comment on those status updates.
01:57And sharing is a way of basically spreading the word.
02:01So as you continue to browse, use all three of these in their own unique way and you'll
02:06be well on your way to becoming a Facebook social butterfly.

Sorting your news feed
00:00As you continue to build your Friends list here on Facebook, you're going to see that
00:04your news feed tends to get a little bit crowded.
00:06As more and more people use Facebook on a daily basis and the more people you add to
00:10your personal friends list, the more information you're going to be inundated with your inside this news feed.
00:16What we need to be able to do is sort through some of the noise and find only the most important
00:21things that we want to view inside of our news feed.
00:25In order to do that, we're going to make use of a couple of different things, such as the
00:28automatic sorting features, and also Friends lists.
00:32The first way to sort your news feed is to come right up here to little tab that says
00:35Sort, and when you click on this, you'll be able to see only the Top Stories or the Most Recent Stories.
00:42So Top Stories is based on what Facebook deems to be the top stories, the things that are most important.
00:48This could be things that are getting more traffic, these could be things that are getting
00:50a lot of replies, a lot of likes and things like that, or it could simply be the most
00:55important people, the people you interact with most.
00:58You could also switch this to be the Most Recent.
01:00By switching to Most Recent you will see the chronological order of the post as they come in.
01:06If you don't like this and you want to continue using Facebook's algorithm, all you have to
01:10do is switch that back at anytime to Top Stories.
01:14In addition to using the sorting feature you can also use this Friends tab over here.
01:20Friends tab automatically uses something called Close Friends.
01:23If you click on this, it comes in and it brings you to Introducing Close Friends.
01:28You can add your best friends to this list to see their photos and news in one place.
01:33This is an optional feature, but it's a great way to add the most important people in your
01:38life to one central location where you can instantly view what's going on with them.
01:43So if you hit Okay, that's going to take you to this page and then you can come right over
01:48here and start adding friends to this list.
01:51So if I wanted to add a friend to this list, for instance John Smith, I'll click that and
01:57his news automatically pops in.
01:59If I want to add someone else like James Fritz, I can add him in and his updates will automatically
02:05start coming in as well.
02:07As I scroll down through here you'll see that the updates that pop in correspond to the
02:12people in my list.
02:14So there is something that James posted earlier today.
02:17So any time I want to see the Close Friends list I simply come over to left, click on that,
02:22and all of the people I've deemed to be most important get shown on this list.
02:27I can also curate a Family list.
02:29This is going to be anybody who I've actually said is my mother, my wife, my brother, et cetera.
02:34Those will automatically be added to your Family list.
02:37And if you've added any work-related information, you can see other people who have the same employer as you.
02:44So if I click lynda.com, you can see other people who work for lynda.com, which happens
02:48to be John, and of course James, and then my friend David Franz as well.
02:54Using these sorting options is a great way to break through the noise, because you're
02:59going to be adding a lot of friends.
03:01It may not be people that you interact with on a daily basis, and it may be some people that
03:05you really just don't care what they have to say at any given time throughout the day.
03:09So this is a great way to, like I said, break through the noise and get only the most important
03:14information as quickly as possible.

Hiding things from your news feed
00:00Sometimes the Facebook News Feed can be sort of the Wild Wild West in terms of what people
00:05are posting on it.
00:06You never know what people are going to say or what types of photos they are going to be sharing.
00:10And there may be some things that come across that you may not want to see.
00:14So in this movie I'm going to show you how to actually remove items from your Facebook
00:18News Feed that you don't want to see anymore.
00:21If I find in my News Feed something that really I don't care to see, I can simply hide that
00:25from my News Feed at any time.
00:27For instance, I'm not real interested that John changed his profile picture.
00:31So I can come up here and click this little icon here, and I can choose hide the story,
00:36report story a spam.
00:38I can also change the way I subscribe to John.
00:41So if I want to see all of his updates, I remain checked like this.
00:44If want to see most of the updates, I check here, and if I want to see only the important
00:49stuff, big life-changing events, et cetera, I choose that.
00:53I can also choose to unsubscribe from John.
00:56If I unsubscribe from John that means I am no longer going to see his activity in my News Feed.
01:00We're still Friends, I can still send him a message, but I just won't see all of his
01:05stuff coming into my News Feed.
01:07If you don't want to take that extreme where you unsubscribe from them totally, you can
01:11use one of these filters here, or you could simply hide the story that you don't want to see.
01:16By choosing Hide story, that story is automatically hidden from your timeline.
01:21And it tells you the story is now hidden from your News Feed.
01:23You can unhide it at any time or you can change what updates you get from John.
01:28So again, you get to determine Most Updates, Only Important.
01:32You can also choose whether or not you want to see Life Events, Status, Photos, et cetera.
01:36And at the very bottom you'll see Unsubscribe.
01:41If someone is posting things in your News Feed that you don't find to be relevant or
01:44that you just simply don't like, now you know how to hide those or simply unsubscribe from
01:49that person so that you no longer have to see that in your feed.

Asking questions
00:00So far in this chapter we've covered the basics of sharing, like adding a status update, replying
00:05with comments, sharing things, liking things, et cetera.
00:09In this movie I'm going to be exploring another way that you can interact with people on Facebook
00:14by asking a question.
00:16This is sort of like adding your own poll to the Facebook system.
00:20In order to do this you'll need to find one of the Status Update areas, either at the
00:23top of your News Feed or on the left- hand side of your personal timeline.
00:28Once you find that you should be able to see Update Status, Add Photo or Video, and also Ask Question.
00:34If you click Ask Question, you'll see that Facebook changes, where it says "Ask something…"
00:38instead of saying "What's on your mind?"
00:40And so in this case, I could type out a poll question.
00:43What's your favorite color?
00:45I could allow people to open-endedly reply, or I can add poll options.
00:50So in this case I'll do Red, Green, Blue, and Orange.
00:56And if I wanted to give them another option, I'll just choose Other, here we go.
01:01I'm going to uncheck this; Allow anyone to add options, because if I'd leave this checked,
01:05anybody can add their own color.
01:07I want them to pick between these options here.
01:09I'll make sure this is set to Public, because I want everybody to be able to respond, and
01:13then I'll click Post.
01:15Once I've clicked Post, it automatically shows my question there and as people respond, as
01:20you can see, John has already responded here, I can see how many votes each one of these options gets.
01:26So right now I have one vote for red, none for green or blue.
01:31If I expand this out I can see all of the options and the corresponding votes to each one.
01:35So right now John is the only one that has responded, but red is my most popular option.
01:41If I want to close this box, I just click the Close button in the top right-hand corner.
01:45So the next time you need to get someone's opinion on something, whether it would be
01:49what type of wedding cake should you buy, what type of tuxedo you should rent, or what
01:54car should I buy, try using the Facebook Ask Question feature to crowdsource the information
02:00that you're looking for.

5. Posting Photos and Videos
Uploading photos to Facebook
00:00One the most fun and visual ways of sharing things on Facebook is to post a photo.
00:05In this movie I'll be showing you how to upload individual photographs to your Facebook timeline.
00:10In order to do this from your Facebook timeline page you just simply click on the photo icon right there.
00:17Once you click on that you have the option to upload a photo or video from your hard
00:21drive, use a webcam, which means you're going to take a picture with a camera that's attached
00:26to your computer, or you can create a new photo album in which you upload photos to.
00:32We're going to create our own album a little bit later on in this course.
00:35For now I just want to show you how to upload a single photograph to your timeline.
00:39So let's go back over to Upload Photos/Video.
00:43Once I do that it's going to ask me to say something about this.
00:45Well, I haven't exactly chosen the photograph yet, so it's very hard for me to say something
00:49about this photo since I haven't chosen it yet.
00:52So let's go ahead and do that first.
00:53I'll click Choose File. On my Desktop inside of a folder called Assets I have a photos
00:58folder, and inside of that I have several random photographs.
01:01So I'm just going to pick this photo called doggyback, and hit Open.
01:05Then I'm going to say something about it.
01:07So this is obviously a little dog piggybacking on top of a big dog.
01:10So I'm going to say, I thought this was cute, thought I'd share it with you guys.
01:17So now, once you've typed out your description, chosen the file, you also have the option
01:22to tag people if you want to. That means indicate that they're with you at this given time.
01:27You can also add a year to this by clicking on this little clock icon, and you can add
01:33a location information to it as well.
01:36In this case I'm not going to add any of those.
01:37I'm just going to upload the photo.
01:39So I'll click Post. And after I click Post, Facebook uploads this to their server and
01:45then displays it on my Timeline.
01:48Once you have your photo uploaded you should see your description above it and the photo
01:51right here, but this is not the full photo.
01:54If you want to see the full photograph, click on it.
01:57This takes you into what's called a lightbox view, and a lightbox view gives you a full
02:01view of the photograph, as well as your description over here on the right and any comments that
02:06might be associated with this photo.
02:08Nobody has commented on it yet.
02:10So I don't see anything over here yet.
02:12You also have the ability to tag the photo, to add people that might be in the photograph,
02:17you can add a location, and you can edit the photograph as well.
02:21If this photograph is not big enough for you, you can actually come right up here and enter
02:25what's called full-screen mode.
02:27By clicking on this you enter into a full-screen preview of the photo itself.
02:32This gives you just a single-shot view of only the photograph with no other distracting
02:36things around you.
02:38It tells you at the top that facebook.com is now full-screen.
02:41If you want to allow it, click Allow, and you can keep working, or you can Exit Full Screen
02:47and it takes you right back to your normal working environment.
02:50If you wish to exit lightbox view, click the little X in the top-right corner or simply
02:54press the Escape key on your keyboard.
02:57That takes you right back into Facebook.
03:00Let's upload one more photo to make sure we've got it right.
03:03I will back up here to my Status section, click on Photo again, Upload Photo, I'll choose
03:10a file, go to my photos folder, this time I'm going to pick kids_swim, open that up,
03:18and we'll just type out, "They're having way too much fun!" And I'll click Post.
03:26Once I click Post the photograph appears on my timeline.
03:29If I click it, I enter into the lightbox mode.
03:33If I want to cycle through the photos that are posting to my profile I can click Next
03:38and it switches to the dog photo, clicking this switches back.
03:40So you actually have navigation controls throughout all of your photographs that you upload to Facebook.
03:46Again, if you wanted to tag people this is where the tagging happens.
03:50If you wanted to add location information, for instance if I wanted to add a location
03:53to this, I could say Orlando, Florida.
03:57Let's say this was taken at a pool in Orlando. And I'll hit Done Editing.
04:02So now, They're having way too much fun - in Orlando, Florida. Pretty cool.
04:08If I click the X in the top-right corner or hit the Escape key, it takes me out and
04:12back to my Facebook timeline.
04:15So now that we know how to upload single photos to our Facebook timeline, let's explore how
04:20we can then take these photos and group them into albums that we create in Facebook as well.
04:26

Creating and managing photo albums
00:00In addition to uploading single photographs to your Facebook timeline, you also have the
00:04ability to create and manage photo albums as well.
00:08This allows you to aggregate photos into individual groups that you can then explain and annotate
00:13in any way you see fit.
00:14Let's go ahead and take a look at how to do that now.
00:17I'll scroll down on my timeline page to the area where we normally enter in a status update.
00:22I'll click Photo and then on that far right-hand side of the Photo section I'll click Create Photo Album.
00:29Once I do that it will take me onto my computer where I then have to select files to upload.
00:34So I'm going to go to Desktop, go to my Assets folder, inside photos, and I'm going to find
00:40a folder called vacation, then I'll simply select all of the photos inside of there and hit Open.
00:46As you can see, Facebook is now going through and finding each individual picture, uploading
00:50it, and allowing me to put descriptions with each one of them.
00:55As the photos come in, if they have any copyright information or metadata associated with them
00:59you will see that up here in the description fields underneath.
01:04If you want to tag, add a year or a location to any of these photographs, you simply click
01:09the icons on the bottom of each one.
01:12So this one tags a person, this one adds a year to the photo, and this one adds a location.
01:18Once you've finished uploading your photos you can go down at the bottom and you can
01:21choose whether or not to add more, click High Quality to ensure that these are the highest quality photos.
01:27I'll click that to turn this on, then you can determine the visibility, whether or not
01:31it's Public, Only Friends, Only Me, or Custom. In this case I'm going to leave it on Public.
01:38And then finally when you're finished, click Post Photos.
01:43When you click Post Photos, it creates the album for you.
01:46You can see here that it's actually called Untitled Album at the moment.
01:50If I want to change that, I can click Edit Album, and here at the top I can give it a
01:55name. Underneath that you can give it a description, "These are photos I've taken while on vacation."
02:02You can say where these photos were taken.
02:04You can edit the date, add more photos, or delete the album.
02:08In this case I don't want to delete the album. I just want to click Done.
02:13Once I click Done it takes me to My Vacation Photos, at the bottom there's my description,
02:18These are photos I've taken while on vacation.
02:21And if I want to I could click any one of these photos and it enters into Lightbox Mode.
02:26I can then cycle through the album by clicking the navigational buttons on the right-hand side.
02:32I can hit Escape to get out at any time.
02:35If you're not happy with the order in which the photos are displayed, move your mouse
02:39over any one of the photographs and then simply click and drag to reposition it in the order.
02:45So if I wanted this picture to be first, click, drag it over, and drop it.
02:50You can rearrange these in any way you want.
02:52By rearranging them, that's the order they will appear in inside of the lightbox mode, so
02:57if I were to click this photo here, it is now the first in this set and it will be followed
03:01by the rest in the same order in which I arrange them.
03:05Hitting Escape takes me out and allows me to go back to my album.
03:10If I want to go back to my Facebook timeline I simply click my name right here and it takes
03:15me back to Facebook.
03:18If I want to create another photo album, I just come back down, click Photo again, create
03:22another album. This time I'll select wedding, and I'll grab all of the photos inside of
03:28there and open them.
03:30Again, Facebook's going to go through and upload each one of these photos.
03:35I can give it a name here at the top, I can also give it a description, I could add where
03:41these were taken, I could also add a date.
03:44At the bottom I want to make sure High Quality is checked.
03:47You'll notice when I hover over this it says it stores larger images with this, that means
03:51that you're just going to get Higher Quality, larger files.
03:54It does say that this is a slower process, so if you're on a slower Internet connection
03:58it may take a little bit longer if you have the High Quality option checked.
04:02But by checking High Quality you ensure that you get the best quality photographs for everyone to see.
04:07So I recommend having that checked on.
04:09Then finally when I'm finished I'll post the photos.
04:13If you upload photographs in which Facebook detects that there's a face, they will automatically
04:17prompt you to tag the people that are in these photographs.
04:20If you don't want to tag people in your photographs you can choose Skip Tagging Friends.
04:25If you want to tag people just start typing their name.
04:29If they're already on your friends list you'll be able to tag them really easy.
04:33We'll cover tagging in its own specific movie a little bit later, so for now I'm just going
04:37to click Skip Tagging Friends.
04:40Once I do that, the photos appear, and I can then rearrange them any way I want, and once
04:46I let go of the last photo, they're going to stay in that order and if I want to return
04:50back to my Facebook timeline I can click my name, or if I want to see all of my photo albums
04:55I can click Albums.
04:57And once I do that you can see there's my wedding photo album, my vacation photo album.
05:02Any photos that you post individually to your Facebook timeline or your "wall" you'll see
05:08those in an aggregated smart album that Facebook generates automatically.
05:13Also another smart album is your Cover Photos album, any photos that you upload as your
05:16cover photo will be stored here. And then finally, your profile picture also gets an album.
05:21So each time you change your profile picture, that will be located here as well.
05:26Now let's go back to my timeline by clicking my name.
05:29And so hopefully by now we have a better understanding of what photo albums are and how we can create
05:35them, and also how we can manage the photographs that we upload into our photo albums so that
05:39we can share multiple photos at a single time here on Facebook.

Tagging photos
00:00Previously in this chapter we've talked about the idea of tagging people in your photos.
00:05And in this movie we're going to be exploring tagging and how you can actually apply it
00:09to a photograph to tag someone that you might want to include as part of the photograph
00:14that you're uploading.
00:15So the first thing I need to do is upload a photo that I want to tag.
00:18So I'm going to click Add Photo/Video from right here at the top, and I'll choose Upload
00:23Photo/Video, and in this case I'm going to choose a file, and I've got a picture of me
00:28and my wife, and I'll hit Open.
00:30And I'm going to say something about this, I'll just say, Drew and I last year....
00:36And then if I wanted to go ahead and upload the photo I could.
00:40So I'll click Post and it posts the photo.
00:43If I click on the photo, I then go into the lightbox mode, and at the bottom there is
00:48the option to tag the photo, you can also tag the photo from here.
00:51By clicking Tag Photo you enable this little box that pops up to tag people.
00:57Right now it's picking up my face and it assumes that I'm one of the tags, so I'll just go
01:02ahead and click myself to tag me, and then also in my Friends list it gives me people to tag.
01:08For the second person it automatically detects faces.
01:10And so I'll type dr for Drew and there's my wife, so I'll just select her, and now she
01:15has been tagged inside of the photo as well.
01:18And so once I'm done tagging I can click Done Tagging here at the bottom or I can click
01:22Done Tagging at the top.
01:24If I click Done Tagging, it is finished and now if I hover over this it tells you who
01:30this is, and who this is.
01:33And if I hit Escape or click the X in the top-right corner, it takes me out.
01:37Now once you've tagged someone in a photograph they will actually get a notification saying
01:42that you have tagged them in a photo.
01:45Depending on how they have their privacy settings set you may or may not be allowed to tag that person.
01:50A little bit later on we'll discuss the privacy options and how you can prevent people from
01:54tagging in photographs, and also how you can make it so that they have to have permission
01:58before they can tag you in photographs as well.
02:02Most people don't know that those privacy controls exist, but I think it's very important
02:06that you understand tagging and exactly what it is.
02:09Basically it's simply saying that you are a part of this photograph.
02:13It's a way of including you and being more social and sharing the whole experience of
02:17whatever is going on in your life.
02:19So now that you understand how to tag people and why you would want to tag people, my suggestion
02:24is to upload a few photos or go back through the photographs that you've already uploaded,
02:28and start tagging people.
02:30This is only going to enhance your Facebook experience.

Posting videos to Facebook
00:00In addition to adding regular photos to Facebook you can also add video as well.
00:05In this movie, I'll be showing you how to upload videos to your Facebook timeline and
00:09how to work with them once they've been uploaded to Facebook.
00:12In order to add a video, you do it just like you do a photograph.
00:15Anywhere you see the Update Status section, whether that be in the News Feed or on your
00:18Facebook timeline, click Add Photo/Video and then you have the choice of either uploading
00:23a video from your computer or using a webcam to create a video.
00:27In this case, we are just going to upload a video.
00:29By clicking Upload Video, it looks just like the Photo dialog box.
00:32I'll click Choose File, and I'll go grab a video, and I'll hit Open.
00:38And then I can say, "A close encounter with an airplane…"
00:44You can control who's in the video, you can set a location, and you can also control the
00:49visibility, just the same way you can with a photo.
00:51In this case though, I'm just going to click Post.
00:55Once I click Post, it's going to tell you that by submitting a video to Facebook, you
00:58agree to comply with all of Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which among
01:02other things means that you agree not to upload any videos that infringe upon the copyright,
01:07publicity, privacy, or other rights of a third party.
01:12Basically what this is telling you is that you need to make sure you have the rights
01:15to whatever video material you're putting up there.
01:18If you agree to this, just simply hit Agree.
01:21It's telling you now that Facebook needs to open a new browser window to upload your video.
01:24If that's okay with you, hit Okay.
01:26Facebook will then upload your video through this little window right here and you will
01:30have to wait for it to upload, so depending on the size of your video this could take
01:34a substantial amount of time.
01:37Once your video is uploaded, you will get a confirmation message telling you that your
01:40upload has been completed.
01:42Your video has finished uploading and you will be notified when it has been processed.
01:46You can edit your video if you want to add a title or tag friends.
01:50So basically what this is saying is your video has been upload to Facebook, it's not ready
01:54to view yet, because Facebook does have to process it to put it in a web friendly format.
01:59So I am just going to Close and Edit the Video for now.
02:02It tells me here the video is currently processing.
02:04I can edit the details anyway I want, and then save it and come back later.
02:09Is there anybody in this video?
02:10Not really, it's just a video of an airplane flying overhead.
02:14So I'm going to call it Close Encounter.
02:17And I don't really know where it was taken, so I'm not going to add a location.
02:19Description, "A close encounter with an airplane." I'll add "Scary" to the end.
02:26Privacy Controls.
02:27This sets the visibility of this post.
02:29Is it a Public post?
02:31Do you only want your Friends to see it?
02:33Do you only want yourself to be able to see it, or do you want to use one of the smart
02:36list, like Close Friends or your workplace?
02:38It's totally up to you, but in this case I am going to leave it on Public.
02:42Once you are finished with this you hit Save.
02:45Hitting Save is going to take you then, if the video has finished processing, to the video page.
02:51You can see here I get a pop-up indicating that my video is ready to view and I can now
02:55watch it or select a thumbnail.
02:58So by going here I get to see the video, and if I click Play, it will play.
03:09 [Video]
03:12Once the video finishes playing, I can Share that video by clicking on it, it shares it
03:17to my own timeline.
03:19I could also Play it Again or I can come down here to the bottom and I can Tag This Video
03:24with people, Change the Date of the video, Edit This Video, Delete it or get the Embed
03:30code to include it on a webpage or blog.
03:33In this case, I am going to go back to Edit This Video.
03:36When you get to the Edit Video screen it looks a little bit different once the video is actually
03:40present on the Facebook site.
03:42For instance, you get this new section over here called Choose a Thumbnail.
03:46This way you can choose what the thumbnail of the video looks like, so that when people
03:49come to the video page, they see a different image here.
03:53So right now the plane is not really visible, so I am going to cycle through until it's
03:56a little bit closer, and maybe number 3 is probably the best for this.
04:00So once I do that I will go ahead and click Save.
04:04It will take a while for Facebook to update the thumbnail of the video, so don't worry
04:08if it doesn't show up right away.
04:10But again, once you click Save, it takes you back to the video, you can then play it, share
04:14it, comment on it, or whatever you feel like doing.
04:17If you wish to return to the Facebook News Feed, simply click on Facebook, and once
04:22you do that you should see your video right there in the top of the News Feed and also
04:27the new thumbnail that you've updated it with.
04:30So now that we know how to upload and manage videos inside of Facebook, we have a whole
04:34different way of sharing not just static photos, but moving photos as well.

Making photos and videos private
00:00There may come a time when you wish to keep some of the moments that you share on Facebook
00:04private, and in that case, you need to know how to make things appear only to you and nobody else.
00:11In this video I'm going to be exploring how to make photos and videos that you post to
00:15Facebook private so that only you can see them and share them with whomever you choose.
00:20So first I need to do is go to my timeline.
00:23In order to do that I'll just click on my name in the top left corner.
00:27I'll then go to my Photos right here and that takes me to all of my photos and videos that I have.
00:33If I wish to make something private, I need to find the photo first.
00:36So let's say that I wanted this picture of my wife and I to be private.
00:39I'll click on this album and then I'll select the photo.
00:43Once I have the photo open, I can go to the Edit button, and that takes me to all of the
00:48information about the photo, and I can then change the visibility of it.
00:52Right now it's Public facing.
00:54If I wish to make his private, I'll click down and I'll go down to Only Me.
00:58Then I'll click Done Editing.
01:02Now this photo is only available to me.
01:05Nobody else will be able to see this photo unless I go back and change the visibility.
01:10I can hit Escape or click the X to close out, and I can do the same thing for my videos.
01:15Let's go back to my timeline, I'll click Photos again, choose Videos, then I'll find the video here.
01:23At the bottom of this video you can see the drop-down menu, and I'll choose Only Me.
01:29So now that little lock icon indicates that I am the only one that's allowed to see this video.
01:34I can go back to my timeline at anytime by clicking on my name, and it takes me back to
01:39my timeline like so.
01:41Another way to change your privacy settings for the media that you post is to go to your
01:44Account Settings.
01:45You can do that from this tab right here, click, and choose Privacy Settings.
01:50We will cover these settings in-depth a little bit later on, but you can see here that you
01:55have several options for how you connect with people, Timeline and Tagging, Ads, Apps, and
02:00Websites, Limit the Audience for Past Posts, and Blocked People and Apps.
02:06So basically, the ones that I'd pay attention to here are Limit the Audience for Past Posts
02:10and Timeline and Tagging.
02:12So, Limiting the Audience for Past Posts.
02:15When you click on this, this actually limits the audience of the old posts that you've already
02:20posted to Facebook.
02:21So if you want every old post that you posted to Facebook to be specific to one group or
02:26completely make it private, you can do that now.
02:29Now it warns you here that if you use this to content that you've shared on your timeline
02:33with Friends of Friends or with the Public, will change to Only Friends.
02:37Basically, this means that anything that you've been public about so far on Facebook is now
02:43going to be limited to only your Friends list.
02:46It tells you that you also have the option to Individually change the audience of your
02:49posts by just going to the post you want to change and choosing a different audience.
02:54So this is the one fell swoop approach.
02:56If you wanted individually go back and change things, you can do so like I showed you earlier in this movie.
03:01In this case, I'm not going to limit my post.
03:03I am just going to click Cancel, but I wanted to show you that option in case you wanted
03:07to go back and do that.
03:09You can also edit the settings for Timeline and Tagging.
03:12So if you're concerned about people tagging in your photographs, you can choose Edit Settings
03:16and you can change any of the settings that are associated with Timeline and Tagging,
03:20especially with photographs.
03:22Now like said, we'll cover this in its own specific movie later on.
03:25I just wanted to point out where it is in this movie.
03:28So if you needed to control that right away, you know where to find it.
03:31I'll click Done, and now I can go back to my timeline by clicking my name in the top right
03:37and it takes me right back.
03:40Anytime you need to change the privacy setting for a photo or video, simply navigate to the
03:44Photo or Video and find the visibility icon, click it, and change it so that you can control
03:50who sees what and when all the time here on Facebook.

Changing your profile photo
00:00From time to time you may feel the need to change your profile photo here on Facebook,
00:04and doing so is actually really easy as long as you know how to do it.
00:09From your Facebook timeline, find your Profile Picture, which is right here, and when you
00:13hover over you'll notice that you can edit the Profile Picture by clicking on this link
00:17that appears here.
00:18When you click this link, it drops down with several choices, where you can choose from
00:22photos, take a new photo, upload a photo, or edit the thumbnail.
00:28Choosing from Photos allows you to pick a new profile photo from the photos that you've
00:32already uploaded to Facebook.
00:34Taking a photo refers to actually taking a new photograph with a webcam that's attached
00:39to your computer.
00:40Uploading a photo means you have something stored on the hard drive of your computer
00:44and you want to upload it to your Facebook profile.
00:47Editing the Thumbnail, means that you're changing the way the small version of your photo appears
00:52when you comment or tag yourself in things on Facebook.
00:56Removing it will remove the photo altogether and make sure that you have no profile photo.
01:01In this case, I'm just going to Upload a Photo, and I'll find a different photograph for me
01:06here, and I'll click Open.
01:08Facebook is then going to upload that for me, and that's it, you've now changed your
01:14profile photo on Facebook.

6. Adjusting Privacy Settings
Accessing the new privacy shortcuts (NEW)
00:00All right, now it's time to start our conversation around Facebook privacy.
00:05Facebook is constantly changing their privacy policies
00:08and the way you access the privacy on their site.
00:11However, they have made some strides to make it little bit easier for you
00:14to access the areas of your profile where you control privacy.
00:17And one of those areas is something known as the privacy shortcuts
00:21and that's what I am going to be talking about in this movie.
00:23In order to access the privacy shortcuts, you are going to go up to the top right-hand corner
00:26of the Facebook system and you are going to look for this little lock icon that you see here.
00:31And when you click on that you're going to notice that three small sections pop up
00:35and these three sections are called, Who can see my stuff?
00:38Who can contact me?
00:39And how do I stop someone from bothering me?
00:42So basically these are shortcuts to different areas of your privacy controls that enable you to do things
00:46like control who your posts are visible by, control who can send you messages
00:51and also to block and restrict users.
00:53You can do that all from these three small shortcut windows here.
00:56I am going to be covering each one of these individually in their own movies,
01:00but also understand that you can access all of your privacy controls by clicking on See more Settings
01:06down here at the bottom, that will take you to the full list of privacy controls.
01:09These are not all of the privacy controls that you have, these are just the main ones
01:13that Facebook thinks that you want to be able to control and you do so
01:16from this little shortcut menu here.
01:18You may or may not see that little lock icon right now because Facebook
01:22is slowly rolling this out to all users.
01:24If you don't see that, that's okay, just remember that it's going to be there
01:28and when you see it, you'll know exactly what it does, eventually they'll roll this out to everyone.
01:32But I just wanted to point out where these things are, what they do
01:35and show you how to access them so as we talk about it throughout this chapter,
01:39you know exactly where I am going and what I am working with.

Adjusting who can see your stuff (NEW)
00:00The first area of Facebook privacy that we are going to talk about is, Who can see my stuff?
00:04Plain and simple this means, who can see what you post on Facebook.
00:07Your photos, your status updates, whatever that might be, who is allowed to see that information.
00:12If you go to the Privacy shortcut icon and click on that you will have access to the
00:16small drop down that says, Who can see my stuff?
00:19You can click on that and it will expand and you have three different choices here.
00:22Who can see my future posts?
00:24Where can I review all of my posts and things I'm tagged in?
00:27And What do other people see on my timeline?
00:30So this first part here actually controls all of your future posts going forward.
00:35Now by default it might be set to something like Public.
00:38It tells you here that remember, this is the same setting you find right where you post
00:42and by changing it here you've also updated it there.
00:45So basically what this means is if I change this setting to Public and I go over here
00:49to type out a Status Update, notice here that it says Public that's because all of my future
00:54posts now adopt this setting that I have chosen and will reflect that every time I create a post.
01:00So if I don't want my updates to be Public, I will then have to go in and manually change
01:04it to one of these other areas.
01:06So my recommendation is to set this in a way that protects you the most.
01:11So just go up here, choose Who can see my stuff?
01:14And I would suggest setting this to Friends.
01:17That way everyone who you become friends with is now authorized to see your post by default.
01:21Anyone who's not your friend will not be able to see it, it's not a public-facing post.
01:25And when we talk about subscribers a little bit later on in this chapter,
01:29you'll learn exactly why this is so important.
01:30Now if you don't want to see this every time, you can just click this little x and it will go away.
01:35Now the second option here refers to Where can I review all of my posts and things that I am tagged in.
01:40This is something called your Activity Log and I am going to be covering this in depth
01:43in another movie, but just know that when you click on this, you will be able to go in
01:46and actually look at all of the recent things you have done on Facebook and you can
01:50then decide whether or not that is something you want to share on your timeline
01:54or whether or you want to hide it from your timeline.
01:56This is a one-at-a-time approach to controlling what people see.
02:01You can also do something called What do other people see on my timeline?
02:04So you can view your profile as someone.
02:06So if I choose View As, it's going to take me to my profile and this black bar
02:11is going to appear across the top.
02:12Right now I am viewing this as if I was a member of the public, so this is what my profile
02:16looks like to anyone that just happens to surf on to my profile.
02:20However, if I want to see what this looks like as one of my friends I will say
02:23View as a Specific Person and then I will enter in that person's name.
02:27So I will type out James Fritz and let's view it as James.
02:32So James is able to see pretty much everything here because James is just one of my friends,
02:35I haven't added him to any special list, I haven't restricted him in anyway
02:38so he's able to see all of the posts that I create here.
02:42As we continue going through this chapter, I will show you ways where you can control
02:45utilizing different techniques and different listings so that you can say,
02:49okay James is allowed to see some stuff but not all
02:51or he is not allowed to see any but I still want to be friends with him.
02:53There is all types of different combinations and things that you can do to control
02:58who can see what on your Facebook profile.
03:00But View As is a great way to say okay, I know I have restricted some people,
03:04let's go in and take a look at what my profile looks like when I'm viewing it as this person.
03:09It's a great way just to get a bird's eye view of how well you're controlling your privacy on Facebook.
03:13Now in order to exit this, just click this little x button right here,
03:16it will take you out and it will take you back to your Facebook profile.
03:19If you want to return back to the Facebook home screen, just click to Facebook logo
03:23up here at the top left-hand corner and if you want access the privacy controls again,
03:26you just go right back up there.
03:28So in review, we have gone down to Who can see my stuff?
03:31We have controlled all of my future posts by setting it to friends, we have also talked
03:35about what the Activity Log is, we will explain that in depth in another movie,
03:38and we have seen how we can view our profile as other people by using the View As feature
03:43to view your timeline as someone else.
03:46So this is the basic ways that you control Who can see my stuff
03:50using the new Facebook privacy controls.

Changing who can contact you (NEW)
00:00The second piece of the Facebook privacy puzzle is going to be Who can contact me?
00:04If we go up to the Facebook Privacy Shortcut icon and click on that, there's a small option
00:09in the middle here called Who can contact me.
00:11There are two basic sections here.
00:13Whose messages do I want filtered into my inbox?
00:16And Who can send me friend requests?
00:19Let's save the message filtering for last and let's talk about this one right here.
00:22Who can send me friend requests?
00:24This basically refers to okay, how am I accepting new friend requests?
00:29Am I only accepting it from Friends of Friends or can someone who just finds me randomly
00:33on the Internet send me a friend request.
00:35The choices here is Everyone, which is anyone who finds you on the Internet, and Friends of Friends,
00:40meaning that you already have to be connected to someone on Facebook before someone
00:44can you send you a friend request and they have to be connected to that person.
00:48So I recommend changing this to Friends of Friends because that way you know that
00:52at least this person is already connected to someone you theoretically know.
00:56If you open this up to Everyone that means anybody who happens to find your Facebook profile
00:59can send you friend requests and chances are you are not going to
01:02want to be friends with all of those people.
01:04So you would have to spend some time just ignoring those friend requests or sending those
01:07people messages telling them why or why not you didn't accept it and it can just get complicated.
01:12So Friends of Friends is my recommendation for this.
01:15Now when it comes to the message filtering, Facebook is now doing this sort of strange thing
01:20where they're not actually allowing you to control who can send you messages.
01:24They now do a filtering system.
01:26There are two options here, Basic Filtering and Strict Filtering.
01:30Basic Filtering means that most of the time your friends messages and people that you
01:35might know will get sent to your direct inbox where you will get a notification and
01:39you will see it pop up here on the message navigation right up here at the top.
01:44If you turn on Strict Filtering that means mostly just your friends will get through
01:48and they say that you might miss messages from people that you know.
01:52I don't see any rhyme or reason to either one of these.
01:54It's like, okay on Basic Filtering we are going to let most of your friends through
01:58and occasionally some people you don't know.
02:00If you turn on Strict Filtering, we are going to let most of your friends through
02:04but occasionally will kick some of those people out, too.
02:06I don't really understand this; I wish they would give me just a single control point
02:10where I can say, okay I want to receive messages from these people and not these people, plain and simple.
02:15But they have set it up this way and that's what we have to deal with.
02:18Now if you turn on Basic Filtering that is the most basic form of filtering here,
02:22like I said, mostly your friends will get through occasionally, somebody else will get through,
02:26you can also turn on Strict Filtering here.
02:28If you switch over Strict Filtering that means that basically you're saying to Facebook,
02:31okay only the most important people need to come through here please.
02:34Don't just let anybody come through.
02:37So I would recommend actually turning on Strict Filtering and then once you have Strict Filtering turned on,
02:40go into your Inbox after a couple days and you can actually go in -- lets use See All here.
02:47So we go in here and once you do that, you'll see this little icon here that says Other
02:52and when you click on Other that's going to show you any messages that have been filtered out.
02:56So you may from time to time see that certain messages haven't filtered out from certain people,
03:00you can then move them back into your Inbox, you can reply those messages from here
03:04and so forth and so on.
03:05The interesting part about this is that not only is Facebook doing this strange filtering system
03:10but they're also now allowing people to pay money to reach you.
03:15Which means that people will be able to spend, I think it's like a dollar, to send you a message
03:20no matter if they're connected to you or not.
03:22I find this to be an extreme invasion of privacy and I hope that they don't allow this to stick around
03:27for very long but that is the case right now so don't be surprised if you get messages
03:32from people on Facebook that you don't know, especially ones that might sound
03:36a little bit like spam or ads because people are going to be able to pay to send you messages
03:41now using this new message filtering system.
03:43And again I know it's kind of a headache, but unfortunately it's the world we live in
03:47and when it comes to Facebook and it's one of the prices you pay to start using a service like this.
03:51So take some time, go through and make sure you have set up your filtering system on your inbox.
03:56Hopefully, you won't miss any important messages by doing so, but if you do you can always come
04:00back in and check the other mailbox, that way you can see all of the messages that Facebook
04:04has deemed unnecessary to go in your inbox and you can reply, delete, or mark them as spam according.

Restricting and blocking users (NEW)
00:00The last section of the new Facebook privacy shortcuts is something called,
00:04How do I stop someone from bothering me?
00:06Also known as restricting and blocking users.
00:10So how do I stop someone from bothering me?
00:11When you click on this, it's going to expand down and it tells you that you can block someone
00:14to unfriend them and prevent them from starting a conversation with you or seeing things
00:18that you post on your timeline.
00:20All you've to do here is add a name or an email address to this list.
00:24So for instance, if I wanted to block someone, I could block let's say James Fritz and I can Block him.
00:32It's going to come up with a list; I'm just going to choose this is the James that I know,
00:36right here at the top. I'll block him.
00:38It's going to tell me that blocking will unfriend James and prevent him from starting conversations with you.
00:42It will also stop him from seeing things you post on your timeline.
00:45That's okay, let's go ahead and Block him.
00:47And when I do that he is now on my list of Blocked Users.
00:51I can view all of the users that I blocked here, and so James is there.
00:55Anytime I want to unblock someone, all I have to do is click Unblock and it will confirm
00:59that I want to unblock it, that's okay.
01:01I will have to then re-friend James, I'll have to send him a friend request
01:06and hopefully I won't have to explain why I have to send him another friend request.
01:09But in this case, I would have to send him another friend request and then he would have
01:13to either respond or I would just have to sit there and wait.
01:17So let's close this up.
01:18So again, anytime you want to block somebody you just come to this little section,
01:21enter in their name, it finds them, you block them, there you go.
01:25However, blocking someone on Facebook is actually kind of an extreme step because there are
01:29other ways to manage how people see your content and to keep them from seeing certain content as well.
01:35So for instance, let's close this up and let's go over here to this little section on the
01:38left-hand side called Friends.
01:40You'll notice there are several lists here like Closed Friends, Family, lynda.com and Oxnard, California.
01:44All areas corresponding to either places where I work or the area where I live.
01:48And so if I go to More right here, you'll see that there's a list here called Restricted.
01:53And so what Restricted does is it gives you an easy and private way to limit what you
01:57share with someone without blocking or unfriending them.
02:00So basically, when someone is put on this list, they will not be able to see any updates or
02:05anything you post to Facebook that is not public.
02:08So unless you specify, okay this is public, these people won't be able to see it,
02:13and they also will not be told that they are on this list or that they have been listed at all.
02:17So for instance here if I wanted to add a friend to this list, I could just start typing out their names.
02:21So let's say that I want Colleen to be on my Restricted list.
02:26Once I've added Colleen to my Restricted list, she is now not able to see anything
02:30that I post on my Facebook online that isn't public.
02:33So for instance, let's go back to my Facebook profile.
02:36I'm going to type out a status update here.
02:39I'll just say let's see if Colleen can see this.
02:42I'm going to make sure that Friends is listed.
02:45Notice when I hover over that, it says Your Friends, Except the Restricted list.
02:50That means anyone on the Restricted list will not be able to see this in theory. So let's post it.
02:55Once I post it there it is, and now if I go back up to my little Privacy lock and I go
03:00Who can see my stuff?
03:01I'll choose View As> View As Specific Person, let's do Colleen Wheeler, and then when
03:08I look, Colleen can see when I change my cover photo, she can see when I joined Facebook,
03:12she can see all of this information, but she cannot see that post that says,
03:17Let's see if Colleen can see this.
03:18If I switch to someone else like Doug for instance, Doug can see this post right here.
03:25So that means that Colleen, since she is on my Restricted list, we're still friends,
03:30we can still send messages, she can still contact me or connect with me in any way she wants
03:34to here on Facebook, she is just unable to see anything that I post that isn't public.
03:39So this is a great way to restrict people without actually blocking them.
03:43Like I said, blocking should be a last resort for someone who is spamming you or just harassing
03:48you on Facebook or something like that.
03:50But if you just want to limit what the people can see or how they can interact with you,
03:54the Restricted list is definitely the way to go.
03:57So hopefully by now we have a better understanding of how to control what people see
04:02and how they see it, and also how we can, if necessary, block them completely here in the Facebook system.
04:08

Reviewing your activity log (NEW)
00:00In addition to controlling how users see things from you in the future
00:04you can also go back and adjust things from the past as well.
00:07You do that by accessing your Privacy controls up here at the top and then going down to
00:11Who can see my stuff, and then choosing something called Use Activity Log.
00:15When you do that that's going to bring up a lot of information about you
00:18and everything that you've done so far since you joined Facebook.
00:21As you can see here you can go through all of the different areas of your timeline
00:26and see each individual story and then you can adjust it accordingly.
00:30So in this case let's say if I wanted to take this status update for instance, I could change
00:34who is able to see this so I could make it Public, set it to Only Me or Custom list.
00:39I could also determine one of the other list that I have.
00:42I can also click this little Pencil icon and I can say, I want this Hidden from Timeline
00:46or I want to Highlight it on my timeline, or I can simply remove it.
00:51I can also hide things like when I became friends with somebody.
00:53So if I don't want people to know that I'm friends with Kirk, I can say, you know what,
00:56let's just keep this Hidden from Timeline for now.
00:59Right now, it tells me here that I'm hiding when I became friends with Colleen.
01:02Well, if I want to allow that on the timeline I can show that, and then if I want to hide
01:06when I became friends with Ray, I can do so.
01:09If I want people to know, oh, okay, I became single, well let's allow that on the timeline.
01:13As a matter of fact, let's highlight that on the timeline.
01:15We want everybody to know when someone becomes single, right.
01:18And then I know French.
01:20Well, that's hidden right now and chances are I want to keep that hidden.
01:23I don't want people be asking me things in French, after all I don't remember that much of it.
01:26I know Spanish.
01:27Yeah, kind of but not really, so let's hide it.
01:30And then let's see, oh I'm from Possum Trot, Kentucky, that's definitely something that
01:33I want to keep on my timeline, so I want to make sure that's Allowed, and I want to make
01:37sure that that's also set to Public as well.
01:40And then all of these different stories I have individual control over, and that's the point here.
01:45So this is a great way to go in and have one by one control over individual stories.
01:51It's not like a one fell swoop kind of thing though, so it's kind of difficult to go back
01:54especially if you've a long history.
01:56This is a new profile that's just started in January of 2013, but you can imagine
02:00if you've been on Facebook since like 2006 or 2007, how unbelievably long this would be.
02:06So over here on the left you have filters that you can apply.
02:08So you can see things like Your Posts.
02:10You can see Posts that you're tagged in, posts by other people, Posts You've Hidden.
02:16You can see things like Photos, things you have Liked, Comments and then there's a More section,
02:22you can see all of these different filters that you have available to you.
02:25You can also go back up and set to All, and then you can filter by date.
02:28So you can say, okay December, November, October all the way back until whenever
02:33you joined Facebook, you can look through all of those different months individually and see
02:37all of the posts for those, and you can go back and filter accordingly.
02:40So again, the Activity Log is something that just gives you a bird's eye view
02:44of all of your activity here on Facebook and then gives you the ability to control things on a post-by-post basis
02:48to see and control who can see that, who can interact with it,
02:52and how it appears on your timeline.
Collapse this transcript
Limiting past posts (NEW)
00:00Another great way to control what people see and how they see it on Facebook
00:04is to do something called limiting your past posts.
00:07So before we took a look at how to control your past posts one at a time,
00:11now I am going to show you how to control all of your past posts in one fell swoop.
00:15Let's go back up to our Privacy controls and let's go down this time to See More Settings.
00:19When you choose need See More Settings you have this third option here which says
00:23Limit the audience for posts you've shared with friends of friends or the Public?
00:27And when you click on Limit Past Posts it's going to launch this thing that tells you
00:30that If you use this tool, content on your timeline that you've shared with friends of
00:34friends or the Public will automatically change to just Friends.
00:38And they tell you that you should remember that people who are tagged and their friends
00:41may see those posts as well.
00:43You also have the option to individually change the audience of posts.
00:45All you have to do is just go to that post that you want to change and choose a different audience.
00:50But in this case if you just want everything on your timeline to say okay, I no longer
00:54want anything to be Public, I don't want any friends of friends to be able to see it,
00:57I just want my friends, the people I know, the people I trust, to be able to get into this stuff,
01:01I want to limit all of my past posts.
01:03You just click that button and it's telling you once again that You are about to limit
01:07your old posts on your timeline without reviewing them.
01:10Well chances are, if you're doing this you're just doing it to protect yourself,
01:13it's not a big deal so don't worry about it.
01:15You can go back and review them in the Activity Log like I showed you in a previous movie
01:18if you want to, but you don't have to.
01:20It tells you here that This global change cannot be undone in one click.
01:23If you change your mind later, you'll need to change the audience for each of these posts
01:27one at a time and that's in the Activity Log.
01:29And that's okay, just Confirm it and now everything that you've posted on Facebook,
01:34as far back as Facebook can reach says it is now just for your friends,
01:39it is not the public, it is not for friends of friends; it's only for your friends.
01:44So you click Close, that's finished, click Close here and you're done.
01:49From now on whatever the setting is that you have setup so that when you create new posts,
01:53whatever that is, that will then be the default privacy settings for your posts.
01:57If you got that set to Public, you might want to think about going to change that just to Friends.
02:01If you got to set to Friends of Friends or whatever it is that you might have it set to,
02:04anytime you want to come back in and just limit all of the past posts, just go right here,
02:08click Limit your Old Posts and you can change everything on your Timeline instantly
02:14to just be focused where your friends can see it.
02:18So again if you want to get into this section, you just go up to the Privacy icon,
02:22go down to See More Settings and then we're looking for the third option Limit Past Posts.
02:27That's how you can control all of your posts at one time and set them all,
02:32to just be able to be viewed by your Friends.
Collapse this transcript
Limiting who can search for you (NEW)
00:00Something else that you might want to control is how people are able to find you on Facebook.
00:05In order to access this section of the Facebook system just go up to the little lock icon
00:09and choose See More Settings and that will take you to this page that I'm viewing here.
00:13Once you get to this page you are looking for the section that says, Who can look me up?
00:16And you have two options here, Who can look you up using your email address or phone number
00:20that you provided to Facebook and then the second option,
00:23Do you want other search engines to link to your timeline.
00:26Let's take these one at a time.
00:28The first one here, so who can look you up on Facebook using your email address or your phone number.
00:32Now if you've provided your phone number to Facebook, that's okay, I don't recommend doing
00:36that necessarily for privacy reasons, but if you have done that okay.
00:40But undoubtedly you have provided an email address, because that's how you sign up for
00:44Facebook, using an email address.
00:46So if someone knows this email address, are you allowing them to find you simply by having
00:51that email address or are you limiting this to only your friends.
00:54You can have the ability to say; yeah sure anyone can find me, Everyone.
00:59Friends of Friends, mean people who know people I am already connected to can find me and
01:04connect with me or are you saying you know what, I just want Friends to be able to find me.
01:08Friends is definitely the safest option here because it limits who can find you
01:12based on these two criteria.
01:14If you do Friends of Friends that's still pretty much protecting you because of the
01:18fact that that's saying okay, whoever contacts me has to be connected to someone I'm already
01:22connected to, someone I already know and trust.
01:25If you open it up to Everyone that means anybody who is able to find your email address
01:29or your phone number can enter it in and find you on Facebook.
01:33And let's be honest here, how many times have you entered in your email address
01:37or your phone number on the web somewhere.
01:39Chances are you've done it a lot and so it's not that hard to find either one of those
01:43pieces of information, and so that makes it easy for people to find you on Facebook.
01:47So limiting this to Friends of Friends or Friends is definitely the way to go.
01:51In this case I'm just going to go limit it to Friends and then just click Close.
01:54It will automatic save that setting and you'll see Friends appear right there and you'll be good to go.
01:59The second part of this, Do you want other search engines to link to your Timeline?
02:04Basically what this means is do you want places like Google, Bing, Yahoo, places like that,
02:09do you want them to be able to when someone types in your name or your email address into
02:13that search engine, do you want them to find your Facebook profile and serve that up as
02:18a result so people can say, oh so you know Justin, great, here is his Facebook profile.
02:24Do you want people to be able to do that?
02:25This is totally up to you, but know that this little setting right here is fairly tricky.
02:31So when I click Edit, it gives you an explanation of what this is, it tells you that when this
02:35setting is on it's easier for other search engines to link to your timeline and search results.
02:40If you turn off this setting it may take a while for search engines to stop showing the
02:43link to your timeline in the results.
02:45Now you would think that I would need to come in here and click something to make this work.
02:51Well it's already off by default, so you don't have to click anything.
02:55If there's no check mark here, that means you are not allowing search engines to view your stuff.
03:01If there is a check mark here, like so, that means that you are allowing this to happen.
03:06So by default this is unchecked, and let me confirm that and what that means is,
03:12I'm all good, I'm protected; no search engine is able to serve up my profile.
03:16However, when that is checked, that means search engines are searching for you,
03:19and when someone enters in your name chances are they have a better opportunity to find you on Facebook.
03:25So when I close this I want this to say Off most likely.
03:29If you are a public figure or someone of prominence that wants to be found via Facebook
03:34or if you're using Facebook for business purposes, you might want to turn this on.
03:37But if you're just using Facebook as a private social network where you interact with family
03:42and friends, chances are you know how to find people that need to be in touch with you
03:46or they know how to find you, they don't need to search for you on a search engine,
03:50so I would suggest turning this off unless you're using it for one of those other
03:53business-related purposes I talked about earlier.
03:56Okay, so let's review here we've got two settings when it comes to who can look me up on Facebook.
04:00The first one control how people find you via your email address or your phone number,
04:05so we've set that to Friends to be the safest.
04:07Then we setup the do you want other search engines to link to your Timeline setting
04:12and we want to make sure that that's set to off, that is of course unless we're using Facebook
04:15as a public figure or for business-related purposes.
04:19So these two settings right here control how people find you and in the end
04:23how many people can find you and how they can interact with you on Facebook.
04:27So be sure you come in and edit these settings and change them according to your personal preferences.

Refining your Timeline privacy (NEW)
00:00The final piece in the Facebook privacy puzzle is something called the timeline review process.
00:06This is where you refine your timeline privacy inside of Facebook and you are going to
00:10get to this section by going up to the little lock icon and choosing See More Settings.
00:15When you choose See More Settings it takes you to the Privacy Settings and tools
00:18and then on the left-hand side you are going to find something called Timeline and Tagging.
00:22This is where you set up three different sections of your timeline and tagging settings.
00:27Number one, Who can add things to my timeline? That means who can post to your timeline
00:32and whether or not you want to review things that you're tagged in before they appear on your timeline.
00:37Number two, Who can see things on my timeline?
00:40That means that you Review what other people see on your timeline;
00:42that you choose Who can see posts that you've been tagged in on your timeline;
00:46and Who can see what others post on your timeline.
00:50The third one is How can I manage tags people add and tagging suggestions?
00:54This is where we review tags people add to your own posts before the tag appears,
01:00also you can control when you're added or tagged in a post, who do you want to be able to see that
01:05if they're not already in it, and also who sees tag suggestions
01:09when a photo is uploaded that looks like you.
01:11Let's take a look at these one at a time.
01:13The first one here, Who can post in your timeline?
01:16This means like if someone wants to come to your timeline and say, hey happy birthday
01:20or congratulations on the new job or something like that, who can do that?
01:24You have the choices of setting up Friends or Only Me.
01:27In this case I am going to set it Friends, I want people to be able to tell me happy birthday,
01:30it makes me feel good to know that people are out there and they know when my birthday is.
01:34Let's close that up.
01:36Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline?
01:39I think this is a very good option and I think this is a great way to practice safe Facebooking,
01:45if you know what I mean.
01:46So if we go into Edit here what this means is that people can tag you, they can tag you
01:51in photos, they can tag you in status updates, they can tag you in places, there is all different
01:55ways that people can tag you on Facebook.
01:57If you enable this setting, basically what this means is before it will appear on your
02:02Timeline on Facebook, you actually have to go in and review it so you can say,
02:08okay this is appropriate, yes.
02:09Or this is not appropriate, let's hide it.
02:11That's what this means and so I always have this enabled.
02:14And chances are, you're going to want to have that enabled too, you want this to say On
02:18when you're finished. Let's move on.
02:21Who can see things on my timeline?
02:22Review what other people see on your timeline.
02:24This is where you go into view your profile as someone else which we've already
02:28talked about in this chapter.
02:29Who can see posts you've tagged in on your timeline?
02:32Again, you can set this to Everyone, Friends of Friends, Friends, or Custom lists.
02:37So basically what this means is who can see posts that you've been tagged in.
02:40So if somebody says, oh I'm at the baseball game with Justin Seeley and they tag me in
02:44that post, do I want people to be able to see that.
02:47Well chances are, yes I'd like for my friends to be able to see that.
02:50You might want to extend it to Friends of Friends.
02:51If you put it on Everyone that means everyone is going to be able see anytime someone tags you in something.
02:57So if you've set it to Friends and you've also got the Tag Review turned on,
03:01this is the safest way to go about it.
03:03So I am going to set mine to Friends and I am going to click Close.
03:06Who can see what others post on your timeline?
03:08You can edit this and you can choose again Everyone, Friends of Friends, Friends, or Custom.
03:14In this case I think Friends is good because I want other friends to be able to see when
03:17someone is posting on my timeline for my birthday or maybe even Friends of Friends will be appropriate
03:22here because of the fact that you want as many people in the world to know, that are
03:25connected to people you already trust that is, that it's your birthday.
03:28So maybe they post happy birthday messages.
03:30It just depends on how much you're willing to share and how far you want that social
03:35circle to reach outside of your immediate friends list, this is all up to you.
03:40In this case I am going to leave mine set to Friends.
03:42The final section down here at the bottom, do we want to review tags people add
03:46to yourown post before the tag appears?
03:49This is much like this up here at the top; do you want to review tags before they appear?
03:54So basically that means okay, if you have uploaded a photo and someone comes to your photo
03:58and says, oh it looks like Justin in that photo or that looks like Tommy in that photo,
04:02let's tag them in this photo.
04:04Do you want to review that before that tag is allowed to be displayed on Facebook?
04:08Chances are you do, because you never know what people are going to tag on Facebook,
04:11so I am going to leave that as On.
04:14The next one here, when you're tagged in a post who do you want to add to the audience
04:19if they aren't already in it?
04:21So basically this means okay, if I'm tagged in post, someone says
04:24alright I am at the baseball game with Justin Seeley.
04:28When they say that how many people do you want to be able to see that post
04:31if they're not already included in the audience?
04:33I am going to say, just my Friends.
04:36You can set that to Only Me if you don't want it to extend out past your immediate
04:39social circle or you can say Friends.
04:41In this I think Friends is a very safe option so I'll just go ahead and leave it there.
04:46Finally, who sees tag suggestions when photos that look like you are uploaded?
04:51Now here's the thing, even though I am sort of a nerd and I'm really into this technology stuff,
04:55I'm still a little freaked out by the fact that when someone uploads a photo,
04:59if it looks enough like me, Facebook has the technology to recognize that and say, oh that looks Justin.
05:05That's a little too sci-fi for me.
05:06So what I like is the fact that Facebook gets to tell me here that I'm able to turn this off,
05:11so if someone uploads a photo like this that looks like me in theory, are people
05:17getting suggestions that say, oh that looks like Justin, would you like to tag him in the photo?
05:21I don't want anyone to be able to do that.
05:23You can set that to Friends or you can set it to No One.
05:26That way no one can tag a photo of you if it's not you, right.
05:30No one can tag a photo of you just because it looks like you.
05:33So I think this is a great feature that they have included here and I recommend
05:37setting this to No One, just to lock down your privacy overall.
05:41Now let's close that up and so there we go.
05:43All right let's make a quick review here of what we've done.
05:46We've actually gone through and refined all of our timeline and tagging settings here.
05:50We've chosen who can add things to our timeline.
05:52We've seen who can see things on my timeline and how do they interact with things
05:57that are on my timeline and how can I manage tags people add and how do I manage tagging suggestions.
06:03We've done all of that from within this one section here and again we got there from the privacy lock,
06:08See More Settings and then we chose Timeline and Tagging and that's where
06:12you go to refine all of these settings and set them up exactly like you want them
06:16to get the most out of your privacy controls.

Managing subscriptions (NEW)
00:00The last thing that we are going to talk about in the privacy chapter
00:03is something called Subscribers or Followers.
00:06This is something where you allow people who are not necessarily your friends
00:10to connect with you on Facebook. So Facebook defines this as the fact that
00:14your friends aren't the only ones who might like to see your photos or your posts.
00:17Allowing followers allows you to share with anyone on Facebook and find people with the same interest.
00:22Now in my estimation this is going to be more for businesses or business professionals
00:26that are looking to connect with a broader audience on Facebook.
00:30Celebrities and people like that who don't necessarily have a Facebook business page
00:33are really starting to embrace this on the web.
00:36Basically what this enables you to do is it enables you to have followers much the same
00:40way you do on Twitter or other social networks.
00:43When you turn on Followers, basically what this means is that you're enabling
00:47anyone to see the posts that you make that are set to Public.
00:50If you set your stuff to just be Friends or on a Private list or something like that,
00:55none of your Subscribers or "Followers" will be able to see that.
00:58If you want to go to facebook.com/about/follow, they have an extensive page of information
01:04here that tells you all about the different areas of the following system.
01:08This will explain in-depth exactly what it is and why you might want to turn it on.
01:12If you haven't turned this setting on, and you would like to, here is how you get there.
01:17You just go up to the Privacy icon here, go to See More Settings and then on
01:22the left-handside go down to Followers.
01:24In order to turn this on you just click this check mark.
01:27It tells you here that followers will only see your public posts and they will not be added as friends.
01:32So you choose what posts to make public and you can share personal updates with just friends.
01:37When you enable Followers by clicking this, you will also see a list of follower controls.
01:42The first one is Follower Search.
01:44This sets up if you want to connect with people who want to follow you, change your settings
01:48so that anyone can search for your timeline.
01:51This means that I'm basically overriding my search privacy controls and saying you know what,
01:55anybody can find me, I want everybody to be able to find me on Facebook.
01:59Follower Comments, this is controlling who can comment on your public posts.
02:04You can set this to be Everybody, Friends of Friends or only Friends.
02:09If you are doing this public follower thing and you really want to engage and interact with people,
02:13Everybody is the setting you want to do here.
02:16However, if you're only limiting this to Friends of Friends or just your Friends,
02:19chances are you're probably not really to going to get the most out of the following experience anyway,
02:24so I would just turn it off.
02:25So in this case if you wanted it turned on I would just use Everybody,
02:28but for now I am just going to close it up.
02:31Follower Notifications, do you want notifications when people who aren't your friends
02:36start following you and share like or comment on your public posts?
02:39Now if you garner a big following like you turn into a celebrity overnight or something like that,
02:43chances are these notifications are going to get really old, really fast.
02:47But it is kind of nice when you first start to open up to followers that you see.
02:50Okay this many people are interested in what I have to say, so you might want to set that to Everybody.
02:55Then eventually when the notifications start getting too fast and too furious for you,
03:00you can set this to Friends of Friends or Nobody down the road.
03:03I am just going to leave it at Friends of Friends and click Close.
03:06You also have the option to set up a Username.
03:08The username here is basically a Facebook address for you so like facebook.com/seeley
03:15would be for me or facebook.com/justin or something like that.
03:20This is a username that people will easily be able to access your profile on Facebook.
03:25If you have not set up your username yet you can Edit this and you can choose to set up your username.
03:30It tells you here that your account must be verified before you can change your username
03:34and one of the ways that they require for verification is that you have a mobile phone
03:37that can receive SMS messages, so basically they want your phone number
03:41and they want to send you a text message.
03:43It tells you that if not, you can try to register your username at a later time.
03:46So if you absolutely want to have a username on Facebook, verifying via your mobile phone
03:51is the way to do that these days.
03:53Then finally, if you would like to connect a Twitter account to your Facebook account
03:56so you can cross-post between Facebook and Twitter that is what this last option is here.
04:01That's probably a better way to start off with this following thing because you can
04:04just have all of your Twitter posts be automatically public post on Facebook and that way people
04:09are seeing your tweets as well as your Facebook updates and it's just easier that way.
04:14So in this case I am going to turn this off for now and you can see when I turn that off everything goes away.
04:19But if you want to learn more about following, you just come to this section and
04:22choose Learn More, you can read all of Facebook's documentation on it.
04:25But I just wanted to show you where you can find it, how you can turn it on and explain to you
04:29a little bit about how it works before you go in and start messing with it on your own.
04:32

7. Exploring Facebook Mobile Applications
Using Facebook for iOS
00:00The Facebook for iOS application is a free application that's available in the iOS App Store.
00:06There is both an iPhone version and an iPad version and both are a great mobile experience.
00:12When you first open up the application on the iPad you'll notice that the News Feed
00:15is prominently displayed here on the left-hand side.
00:18You can scroll through News Feed items and you have the ability to like them and also
00:21comment on them directly from this section.
00:25You can click Done to return back.
00:28If you're viewing a photo, or if you're viewing just a post, you can comment on it directly
00:32from this window here, leave the comment, and then return back.
00:41You have the ability to sort your News Feed from the top right-hand corner by clicking
00:45Sort, and then either choosing Top Stories or simply by choosing Most Recent.
00:52On the right-hand side of the screen you'll notice that all of your contacts are displayed
00:55here, and you will see any of them that are online will be displayed with a green dot next to them.
01:00Meaning you can start an instant chat session with them directly from this window.
01:04If someone is in the list and has a mobile phone icon next to them that means that they're
01:08not currently online but they are receiving messages on a mobile device.
01:12You can send a message to these people simply by clicking on them and typing out a message.
01:23When you click Send it sends a message to that person, you can then collapse the keyboard
01:28and click away to close it.
01:30You'll see all of your current messages up hear at the top.
01:33You can close those conversations with the small X on the right-hand side.
01:38If you need access any other parts of the Facebook website you can do so using the blue
01:43navigation bar at the top of the screen.
01:44This allows you to view pending friend requests, also view your messages, and view any notifications
01:57that you might have received recently.
02:00Tapping this blue navigation link shows you all of the different parts of the Facebook
02:03website that you have access to in this mobile application, like your Messages, Nearby People,
02:16Events, your Friends list, and some of the auto-generated Friends list like Close Friends,
02:30Family, your workplace, and People who are in your same city.
02:38You can also access your Facebook Groups, like my Up and Running with Facebook Group that I created.
02:44From this screen you can write new posts on the group's timeline, and share photos, either
02:51from the device itself or by taking a photo with the device.
02:58You can also manage your subscriptions, view the Help Center, and change your settings,
03:03like your Account Settings or Adjusting your Privacy Settings as well.
03:07This is also where you go to log out of the Application if you choose to do so.
03:11Clicking away from that closes it.
03:13If you need to go to your profile, click on your name at the top, and it takes you to your
03:17profile page. You'll able to see your profile picture, update your Status, add a photo, and
03:27check in to places.
03:31You can also view your profile information and your photos from here as well.
03:36The photos is a really great experience. You can find a photo in one of the albums that
03:40you want to view, tap the album, and then it shows you all of the photos that are available to you.
03:45Tapping another photo would launch the photo in a full screen window, and by tapping it
03:50again you'll bring up photo controls. This allows you to view the likes and comments
03:54or add a like and comment yourself. You can also tag the photo, make it your profile
04:00picture, save the photo, or delete the photo.
04:04Tapping away from that closes it.
04:05You can navigate to the other photos in this album by tapping and dragging along the bottom of the screen.
04:12When you're finished viewing the photos you can click Done, and it returns you back to the album view.
04:17To get back out tap the arrow, and to get back to your Facebook Wall, tap on the Wall.
04:24The Facebook for iOS application is a great experience when you're on the go, and it's
04:28also a great way to keep you connected no matter where you happened to be.

Browsing the Facebook app (NEW)
00:00Once you have the Facebook mobile application downloaded to your device,
00:03just simply tap on the application icon and it launches up like this.
00:07All you have to do is enter in your credentials, as you normally would to log into Facebook.
00:10So in this case, its your email address and your password.
00:15Once you're all logged in, the Facebook application might ask if you to want to allow for push notifications.
00:19Basically, what you're agreeing to here is that if someone post something on your timeline,
00:23sends you a message or otherwise tags you in any way on Facebook, do you want the mobile application
00:27to then send you an alert to let you know that you need to go check your Facebook.
00:32If you want to agree to this, go ahead.
00:33If not, it's not a big deal.
00:36Once you access the Facebook mobile app, you'll see that the Newsfeed
00:38is prominently displayed here on the screen.
00:41Just scroll with your finger to see all of the different news stories that are available to you.
00:45If you want to refresh your Newsfeed, simply pull down and release
00:49and that gives you the latest news updates.
00:51At the very top of the app is where you navigate to different areas.
00:54On the left-hand side, this button navigates to all of the different parts of the Facebook application.
00:59Tapping that again slides it back over.
01:02You can also see things like pending Friend Requests, your Messages
01:07and also any Notifications that you've received.
01:12On the right-hand side, this little guy enables you to access your chat window.
01:16Anybody with a green dot is currently active on chat.
01:19Anyone without a green dot but with a mobile phone next of their name means they currently
01:22have access to Facebook on their mobile device.
01:25You can also see next to that, how long ago they were active on the site.
01:29You can slide this back over to close that.
01:31If you tap on Status, Photo, or Check In this allows you to share things like written status updates,
01:37photographs and also to check in to different places.
01:40Let's go, up here and tap on the left navigation again and let's take a look at different places we can go.
01:44The first of which is going to be your profile.
01:46So I'll tap my name and it takes me to my profile section.
01:49I can see my header image, my profile image.
01:54I can also write statuses and share photos from here and I can see my entire timeline.
01:59If you see a story on your time that you want to get rid of or hide, tap this little area here
02:03and then you'll hit Delete or Hide From Timeline.
02:06Cancel gets you right back out.
02:08In addition to your profile, you also have access to areas like Find Friends, Messages, Nearby, Events.
02:15You can access things like Chat, Friends, Photos.
02:20You can create and access groups.
02:23You can also access your different list like Close Friends, Family, where you work,
02:26where you went to school and towards the bottom, you have access to things like Help Center,
02:31your Privacy Settings and even a button to logout.
02:34Let's go back to my Newsfeed now.
02:35So I'll scroll back to the top and tap on Newsfeed and that takes me back to the Facebook home screen.
02:41This is just a brief tour of the Facebook mobile application.
02:44We'll dive in a little bit more detail throughout this chapter.
02:46But I wanted to give you a better idea of how the app worked
02:49and how you are able to navigate around it, so you're not lost as we continue to go.

Sharing via Facebook mobile (NEW)
00:00In order to share things on the Facebook mobile application, it's actually really easy.
00:05All you have to do is tap one of these buttons across the top.
00:07So, if you wanted to share a written status update for instance, just up on Status
00:13and then, you could just say what's on your mind.
00:17When you're ready to post, you've a couple of different options.
00:20At the bottom here, you have the ability to tag different friends.
00:23You can also add a location.
00:25You can add a photo to your post and you can set the audience for the post as well.
00:30Things like Public, Friends, Only Me or specify different Friends List here at the bottom.
00:36Once you've chosen that, you can come back and then tap the Post button
00:40and that goes through just like so.
00:42If you want to share a photo, it's pretty easy as well.
00:45Just tap Photo, it takes you to your Camera Roll then you just pick a photo,
00:50hit the check mark at the top and you can hit this little Compose button in the bottom right
00:54and you can share the photo.
00:57Tap on Post, it uploads the photo.
01:01And you should see the photo appear in your Newsfeed once it's finished.
01:04If you would like to check into a place, tap on Check In.
01:08If you don't have location services enabled on your phone, it will tell you so.
01:12If you do, it should zoom in to wherever you are and you're able to pick a place via the list and check in.
01:18You can tap Cancel to exit out.
01:20You can also share updates from your profile as well.
01:24Just tap up here, tap your name, then scroll down to where it says Write Post or Share Photo.
01:31Tapping Write Post takes you to the same status update screen
01:35and Share Photo does the same thing as well.
01:38So as you can see sharing on the go with the Facebook mobile application is very quick and very easy.
01:43It's no wonder so many people choose this as their main way for interacting with Facebook.

Liking, commenting, and tagging on the go (NEW)
00:00In addition to sharing your own status update, you can also interact with other people's status
00:04updates as well and also their pictures.
00:07As you can see here, I have the ability at the bottom of this post to like and comment on this photo.
00:12I can tap Like and that just adds to the like count of the photo.
00:15I can also tap here to comment, then just tap Post to post a comment.
00:22Once it posts, you can see that.
00:25To get back out, just tap the arrow it takes me right back.
00:28If I need to tag someone in a post, that's pretty easy as well.
00:32I can scroll up to the top here and tap Status.
00:35Then I can type out something like Hey and then I start typing someone's name
00:39with an @ symbol in front of it and I can then pick that person from a list and it writes up their name for me.
00:45Then I simply type out the rest of my post and tap on the Post.
00:51And now that person is tagged in this status update.
00:54If I tap on their name, it actually takes me to that person's profile.
00:57And if they're using Facebook on their mobile device, they will get a notification
01:01telling them that I've tagged them in this post.
01:03Then they can go back over and see exactly what I've written and respond to me if they wish.
01:07Let's go back and then let's tap here and go to my profile.
01:12So again, anytime you see anything that you want to like, just scroll, tap the Like button.
01:18If you wish to comment on it, tap on Comment and if you wish to tag somebody,
01:22just start typing their name and you should see a list of people come up
01:26and then you can just tap their name and you're ready to go.
01:28So, as you can see liking, commenting and tagging people is fairly simple
01:33using the Facebook mobile application.
01:35So the next time, you start to share things or if you want to interact
01:38with things people are sharing, use these options.
01:40Its a great way to interact with people and to get a little bit more out of your Facebook experience.

Using Facebook Messenger (NEW)
00:00In addition to the regular Facebook application, you also have access to something
00:03called Facebook Messenger which is a new application from Facebook.
00:07When you launch this app for the first time, it's going to come up with this screen
00:09where it asks you, who do you want to Log in as?
00:11Chances are you're already logged in as yourself through the Facebook Mobile App, so you can just tap Continue.
00:17Once you tap Continue it is going to take you to the Welcome to Messenger screen
00:19where it tells you, you can reach friends wherever they are mobile or web.
00:23Tab Next to go to the next screen and it's going to recommend that you do something
00:26called turning on notifications.
00:27Basically, this just means that each time someone sends you a message,
00:30you get a push notification on your device telling you that they've done so.
00:34Just tab Turn On or Not Now, depending on your personal choice.
00:37If you choose Turn On, Facebook may prompt you to accept a push notification authorization.
00:42Just go ahead and accept that or if you don't want push notations, go ahead and decline it.
00:47In this application, it's very basic.
00:49You have access to a message composition window down here at the bottom
00:52where you can send a message to someone.
00:54Just type out their name and then type out a massage and then tab Send.
01:02If that parson has notifications enabled with their account or on their device,
01:05they will automatically see something pop up on their device and they will be able to interact with you.
01:10When they reply, you'll see that reply pop up in a thread just like so.
01:14To go back just tab the back button and it takes you back to see all of the messages
01:17that you currently have.
01:19You can tab here on the top right, to see a list of the people that are currently active
01:22and you can tap on that person to start sending them a message.
01:25It may ask you whether you not you want to use your current location.
01:28Meaning you want to tag yourself saying oh I'm in Ventura, California, for instance.
01:32If you want to allow that hit OK, if not choose Don't Allow.
01:36Just type out your message and then tab Send.
01:39Once you do that the person should receive your message and you can go back to the list.
01:43Like I said this application is very basic, but it gives you direct access
01:46to your Facebook messages almost like a text messaging application.
01:50So all this is good for is sending messages back and forth between you and your Facebook friends.
01:54Don't expect to be able to write status updates, or like, or comment, or even share photos via this way.
01:59Anytime you see a new message pop in, you'll see a little blue dot next to it,
02:03you can tap on that and, you can see the threat of comments just like this.
02:07So again this is just a very limited application giving you direct access
02:10to one piece of the Facebook ecosystem.
02:13It's a great way to stay up-to-date with all of your messages, while you're on the go
02:16without all of the unnecessary clutter of the whole Facebook application.

Exploring Facebook Camera (NEW)
00:00Another standalone Facebook application is something called Facebook Camera.
00:04Let's tap on that and launch it up.
00:06When I first launch it up it's going to ask me if I want to continue as the person
00:08I'm logged in as on my mobile device.
00:10If I want to I can tap Continue or if it's not me I can hit Not You
00:15and I can tap that and then log in with my normal Facebook log in credentials.
00:18In this case, I'm just going to continue and that's going to take me into
00:21the Facebook Camera application.
00:23When I first launch it, its going to ask me a couple things.
00:25Its going to say "Camera" would like to send me push notifications, I can choose to say OK or Don't Allow.
00:30I also need to give camera my access to my photos, after all I want it to be able to save
00:35and send photos from my camera roll. So I'll hit OK to that.
00:39Once I do that I'm going to see some photos that have been shared recently in my
00:43Facebook News Feed; this is only photos.
00:45If I scroll back up to the top, I can see some of the things in my camera roll
00:49and I can tap here on the camera icon to take a photo as well.
00:55If I want to get back I'll just tap on this icon here and it takes me back.
00:59If I want to select a photo for my camera roll, I can then just pick the photo hit the
01:03little compose button in the bottom-right and then I can say something about this photo.
01:09Once I'm ready to post it, I'll tap Post that's going to upload the photo for me
01:14and post it to Facebook just like so.
01:17So again, this is just another mobile application that Facebook has developed in order to give you
01:20quick access to a very basic part of the Facebook ecosystem.
01:24In this case, they are targeting photos instead of just the messaging.
01:28So in this case when you want to share just a photo or if that's the only part of the
01:32Facebook ecosystem that you find useful, this application is going to be great for you
01:37and this is a great way to quickly and easily share photos with out all of the other stuff
01:41that goes on in Facebook.
01:43You don't see regular News Feed updates here, you don't see any ads, you don't see any
01:48application requests or anything like that; this is all just about photos.
01:51So if that's the main reason that you use Facebook, this is a great application for you.

Exploring Facebook Poke (NEW)
00:00The latest edition of Facebook suite of mobile applications is something called Poke.
00:05Let's tap on that and launch it up.
00:06When you first launch it up you're going to be asked do you want to continue as the person
00:10you are currently logged in as or not.
00:11In this case, I'll just tap Continue and once I do that it's going to lock me in
00:17and it's going to ask me if I would like to except push notifications.
00:20Again, you have the choice here of allowing or not allowing it. So I'll hit OK.
00:25And once, I do that it takes me into the Facebook Poke system.
00:28Basically, a poke is just a short chat message that you're going to send to a friend.
00:33It tells you, you can poke a friend with a message, photo, or video.
00:36You can set the timer to choose how long they can see it and then you can press and hold
00:40to see other pokes from friends.
00:42So in this case, if I want to poke someone, I can just tap on this little icon here and
00:47I select a friend to poke.
00:49So let's poke Doug then I'll hit Send.
00:53That's going to send a poke to Doug. If he has poke installed in his mobile device,
00:56he'll be able to poke me back or at least see that I poked him.
00:59I can also send a message to someone.
01:02So in this case, I can just type out Hello there, I can set it to be 5 Seconds so they'll
01:10only see it for that long and I'll hit Next, then I select a friend to send it to
01:15and then I'll tap Send.
01:17It's going to tell me here that my poke was sent and the friend you selected
01:21will see your poke for 5 Seconds.
01:22If they take screenshots, you'll see a flash icon which means they're just capturing
01:27that moment for themselves.
01:30In the end poke is just a quick and easy chat application that allows you to send
01:35expiring messages to people to just sort of entertain yourself.
01:38There is no real purpose to this application whatsoever other than an entertainment purpose.
01:43You don't get to interact with anyone like you do on regular Facebook.
01:46And you don't get to share anything that sticks around for very long.
01:49After all you set the expiration date for each piece of this.
01:52At the top here you can go to the settings and you can Log Out, clear your inbox, Report/Block
01:57somebody, go into the Help Center, go an Privacy or Legal and Cancel as well.
02:01Here on the right-hand side your refresh button, which is going to refresh your poke inbox.
02:07So as you can see, this application is fairly simple and fairly straightforward
02:11and it's a great little fun way to interact with people on Facebook but it isn't necessarily
02:16a part of the overall Facebook ecosystem.
02:18Poke exists only inside the Poke application and is its own stand-alone Facebook product.
02:24So if you'd like to download it and try it; see if your other friends are using it;
02:27be my guest, explore it and have a little fun.
