Thanks for watching this course on the Facebook PHP SDK. One of the reasons I wanted to do a course on Facebook Application Development is that the documentation online and in existing books can be quite confusing. The Facebook APIs and SDKs change all the time, so sometimes you'll find articles for things like FBML that have been deprecated and no longer valid, or you'll find code on how to do things in one SDK, say the JavaScript SDK, but not on how one might do that in the other PHP SDK.

Learn the basics of building complex, data-driven applications with the Facebook PHP SDK and MySQL. Author Ray Villalobos first introduces the fundamentals, such as checking to see if a user is logged into an application, accessing Facebook user data through the Open Graph API, and making complex API calls with the Graph API Explorer. The course then dives into building an application with API paths and Facebook Query Language (FQL) calls. Along the way, you'll discover how to post to a user's wall, upload photos, integrate with webpages, and more.

Topics include:
  • Downloading and installing the PHP SDK
  • Logging in and authenticating users
  • Accessing Open Graph data
  • Working with connection subpaths, limits, and subsearches
  • Styling a Facebook app with CSS
  • Setting up pagination
  • Understanding Facebook Query Language (FQL)
  • Integrating query results into a full-scale application

Thanks for watching this course on the Facebook PHP SDK. One of the reasons I wanted to do a course on Facebook Application Development is that the documentation online and in existing books can be quite confusing. The Facebook APIs and SDKs change all the time, so sometimes you'll find articles for things like FBML that have been deprecated and no longer valid, or you'll find code on how to do things in one SDK, say the JavaScript SDK, but not on how one might do that in the other PHP SDK.

So I highly recommend that you check out stackoverflow.com when you have questions about the SDK. Facebook has a special deal with Stack Overflow and even their own special URL that makes it the best place to ask questions. Also check out my course, Facebook Applications with HTML and JavaScript. That course goes deeper into things like dialog boxes, social plug-ins, and achievements. I consider this a sister course to this course, because they're similar and do some of the same things just with different SDKs.

Chances are you'll end up doing some things with the JavaScript SDK and some things with the PHP SDK, even within the same application. You may also want to check out my blog at iviewsource.com where I write articles about responsive design, graphic design, and new and different libraries that I enjoy, like BootStrap and EaselJS. Also checkout my course list on lynda.com to find other courses that I've written. Once again, thank you very much for watching this course, and enjoy programming the web.
