As the owner of a personal Facebook account, obviously you are going to make friends with actual friends of yours, but it is inevitable that you'll have professional colleagues, coworkers, potential clients, actual clients also asking to be your friend, or that you want to be friends with, because it doesn't have to be all hands-off business relationship. So it's very common for people who are selling a service or who run a business or who work for a company to have both personal and business friends in their personal Facebook account.
The problem is, and I get this question a lot whenever I teach using Facebook to market your business, is on your Facebook account how can you separate business contacts from friend contacts? I mean you might want to post something that you're about to go to a Bar Mitzvah this weekend. Your clients really don't need to know that. You just want it to go to your friends and family. How can you do that? The answer is with Facebook lists. So to create a Facebook list, go to wherever friends are, so next to the Facebook logo, on Friend Requests, I am going to choose See All Friends, and you will see that there is a button there that says Create a List, and you will find the Create a List button in various places within Facebook, but this is the place that I usually go to.
To create a list, just click the button and then enter a name for it, so you might say 'business', and then you can start adding people to that list. So I might say Bob Levine, say I just selected him and it says Selected (1), and David Blatner. So I will say Create List. And now in the Business List we have two people. So these might be my business contacts and everybody else is a personal contact.
You don't have to assign every single person to a list. If you want to add more people to this list, you can go ahead and do that, and as you start typing a name, only those friends of yours that match that character will appear here. So it knows that you're only searching among your actual friends, not among everybody in the known universe. You can also edit the name of this list if you wanted to, and you can delete a list this way. Deleting a list does not delete your friends; it just deletes the list, and your friends then don't have that list associate with them.
Now, let's create another list. So I am going to come back up here to See All Friends, create another list. This one I might call family, and in family, I'll enter my friend Zoey and Sherri and maybe Bob as well--maybe Bob is my brother-in-law and who is also my client. A person can belong to more than one list, and I'll say create that list. Notice that as you add lists, the names of those lists appear here on the left, so I can click Business and Family and quickly see them.
So this is how you set up lists. You create lists and you assign people to lists, and they can belong to more than one list at a time. Now, how do you actually put those into practice? Well, let's say that you want to add a new post and I only want my family friends to see this post. I don't want my clients to see this post. That's what this little lock is down here. Now by default everyone will see what I post here, but you could say Friends Only, and in fact you could make that the default, and you can also say Customize. So you could hide it from certain people, or you could make this visible only to certain people, Specific People or maybe Only Me, because you are writing to yourself I guess.
But if you say Specific People, then you're able to not just type in the names of people but the names of lists. So if I said Family and I could just choose that, and then I could save the setting for this post. Or I could say, from now on every time that I make a post I want that to be my default setting, that only family sees my posts until I change it to something different. I will just leave it for that one for now. You've chosen to share this post with family. Your default setting is for Everyone. That's fine. Yeah, yeah. And then I click Share.
So using lists is really the only way that you can filter what you post in your personal Facebook account. Normally, when you're trying to market your business, you are going to be posting everything in your Facebook page that we will be creating later on in this title. But as I said when we first started this particular video, you will always have some people in your personal Facebook account or actually business friends as opposed to family friends or friends friends. And by setting up lists, you can be assured that posts that you write that are meant for your business clients are only seen by them and posts that you write for your family are only seen by them, and so on.
