Video: Attracting followers

Okay, let's go ahead and actually tweet something. Let me click on my little tweet status box. "What's happening?" it's asking. I'm going to be working on the company blog today, so I think I'll write, "I am working on the blog today. Any suggestions?" You know, ask questions. It's always a good thing to tweet, remember that from my last video, and I'll just go ahead and click Tweet. And in my timeline, I see not only everybody that I'm following, what they're tweeting, but also my own.

Attracting followers

Okay, let's go ahead and actually tweet something. Let me click on my little tweet status box. "What's happening?" it's asking. I'm going to be working on the company blog today, so I think I'll write, "I am working on the blog today. Any suggestions?" You know, ask questions. It's always a good thing to tweet, remember that from my last video, and I'll just go ahead and click Tweet. And in my timeline, I see not only everybody that I'm following, what they're tweeting, but also my own.

And to see only my own, remember, you go to Profile. But who is seeing this tweet? If they don't happen to know my Twitter address, who sees it? Well, my followers do, these 27 people. But only these 27 people. Now, I would prefer that 27,000 people see what I tweet about, and these people will only see my tweet if they happen to be on Twitter at that moment that I tweeted. Because assuming that these guys are following many other people just like we're following other people, this little tweet will move further and further down in the reverse chronological order.

So, you want to increase the number of followers that you have, so that the chances that people happen to be logged in at that moment that you tweet are increased. So how do you increase the number of followers? That's the point of this movie. It's very similar to increasing the number of subscribers to your newsletter or visitors to your web site, or your blog. It's promotion and making it compelling enough for people to want to follow. Let me give you some tips as far as that's concerned. Attracting Twitter followers.

Obviously, you need to include your Twitter URL everywhere, just like right now you're including your web site or your email address; sorry, you now have to add your Twitter address. You don't have to type out You could just say twitter:@yourname, if you want. If you have a Twitter account, you know that anytime you see the @symbol with a name, that is their Twitter Account, and they can find you that way. But you want to put that on your business card.

You want to place it at the bottom of every newsletter or at the top. You want to add it to any time that you are writing an email in your email signature. Basically, every time that you are including your web site URL and your email address and your phone number, include your Twitter URL. And then write about your Twitter feed. If you're writing an article for the company newsletter, include, "Here is something funny I found on Twitter," or, "Are you following me? You should make sure that you're following me, because we post really great coupon codes on Twitter. Here's our Twitter address." Promote it among your customers and clients.

What about Twitter directories? You know, the first time that I did this video, Twitter directories were very common, but nobody has published anything about Twitter directories since 2009. So, if you go to a search engine and look for Twitter directories, you'll see a whole bunch of links, but it's kind of like looking for web page by going to a yellow page full of web site addresses. There are better ways to find people to follow, and I'll be talking about that in another video. So I don't really think that any of your potential customers are searching through Twitter directories to see who they should follow.

If you just want to include yourself, go ahead, but I don't think it's going to help out a great deal. Another great way to attract Twitter followers is to write such fantastic tweets that your 27 followers retweet them to their followers. And that way those followers may say, "Oh my goodness. That company has some great information. I love that company's products." They will go to your Twitter page, and then they'll click the Follow button. Then have you seen the little Tweet button or the Tweet bird saying, "FOLLOW US"? You can do that as well.

Any kind of online presence that you have that you are able to add your own HTML code to, add a little Tweet button, add FOLLOW US ON twitter. Let me show you how we can do that right now. I am going to jump over to our web site, and people can read about it, and then there's a Contact Page somewhere down here, and people can subscribe to the RSS feed. They can go to the About page. Now on the About page, you might want to include what is your Twitter address here, which I haven't done yet.

But actually what I want to talk about is adding something to the homepage that has a Twitter logo or button, where people can click on it and jump directly to your Twitter homepage to follow you. So if you go on, do you look for Twitter Resources? Here is the URL: http://business.twitter. com/optimize/resources, and they'll put a little banner here showing you that URL. There is a whole bunch of really cool things that we can pull from to increase the promotion of our Twitter feed.

I'll be talking about a few of these in other videos. Right now, we want to look at the Follow buttons. So I'm clicking See All Follow buttons. It says, "Choose the button that you want to include on your web site." There are big buttons, medium-sized, just the logo, different colors, depending on the color of your web site. Now, they want to protect their brand identity, so you can't get Twitter button in different colors. These are their corporate colors. I don't want to say FOLLOW ME ON twitter. I want to say FOLLOW US ON twitter. Oh look, they thought about that. Looking for Follow Us on Twitter buttons? There you go.

So let's try this one right here. Now what happens is as soon as you choose the button, it says, "To use this button, copy and paste this code into your web site's source code." So it's already selected. So I am going to copy it and now you are going to have to get your hands dirty a little bit, or maybe even just send this in an email to your web person and say, "Please add this to our homepage," or wherever it is that you want. But in this case I am running a WordPress blog and I have already logged in to the Administrative panel here. Now there is a whole video on working with WordPress blogs on, if you want to create your own WordPress blog.

But what's need is that if I go to the Design section of this design and choose Widgets, I can easily add stuff to that right sidebar. And in fact, I have three holding areas right now for little text snippets. In this first one, there's nothing here, and I'm just going to click right down here. This is for like the headline, but I don't need a headline for my FOLLOW US button. And I am going to click right here, and I am going to choose Paste. So this was the code that we just captured. It is the link to Bliss No.5's Twitter account, and then it's pulling the image.

I guess they are storing it on Amazon. And then the alt tag is "Follow blissno5 on Twitter". So if you want to edit this at all, if you want to change the alt tag, if you want to add a description tag or anything like that, you can go ahead and do that. But I am just going to leave it alone. I'm going to click Change that and Save my changes, and there it is, Changes saved. So let's take a look at our site again. I'll click Visit Site. There it is. So now, when somebody goes to your blog, they can see this whole button, FOLLOW US ON twitter.

Click it and it brings them right to your Twitter page. And if they are not you, they would see a big fat green Follow button here, and they can click Follow. So those are the building blocks of increasing the number of Twitter followers. You just need to promote your Twitter account as much as you can just as you would promote your newsletter subscription form, your web site URL. And then of course, you need to be an engaged citizen in the Twitterverse, posting good tweets, responding to your customers' tweets, and so on, which is what this whole chapter is all about.
