Like the other applications in Microsoft Office 2007, Excel 2007 boasts upgraded features and a brand-new look. In Excel 2007 Essential Training , instructor Lorna A. Daly introduces the new version in detail. The training begins with the essentials of using the program, including how and why to use a spreadsheet, how to set up and modify worksheets, and how to import and export data. Lorna then moves on to teach more advanced features, such as working with functions and macros. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.
Something you're going to really enjoyed working with in Excel 2007 is the ability to use templates. You'll find templates underneath the Office button in the top left hand corner here, and we're going to select the New command. The template is something that you'll use whenever you want to begin working in Excel. The default template is a blank workbook, and that's what comes up normally if you don't choose any other kind of template to work with. That's the one you're most familiar with when you're working in Excel. There's also Installed Templates that come with the product. You can choose from business templates, such as a Billing Statement and an Expense Report as well as personal templates such as the Blood Pressure Tracker.
If you've created templates in the application before, they'll be included underneath this My templates selection. I downloaded a calendar template for 2007 that I want to work with. I'm going to select it and click OK. Notice it gives me a tab for every month in the year 2007. This is a great starting point. What I'd like to do now is to put it in the EatCake colors. So I'm going to highlight the row, go up to Themes Colors, and select the green as my background.
The only thing now I have to do, is to change the white text color to black so it's more noticeable. I do that by going to the font color, clicking on Automatic, and I have a nice adjusted template more in line with the colors that we use in EatCake. I want to save this now as my new template going forward. To do that, I click on the Office button, go down to Save As, and select Excel Template as my choice of file type.
I then change the name on my template so it distinguishable from my original, and click Save. If I close this, and go back into My Templates, I now see it as an option for me to select, and I can now use this template going forward. That's how easy it is to create templates in 2007. Let's delve a little further into the other things you can do with templates. If I go back up to the New command, under the Office button, I can create a new template from an existing template, just by clicking on New from existing we'll select a new template to work from, click create New, and I now can create a brand-new template from the worksheet that I had originally opened. I'm just going close these two templates, so that we can go back the file area, perhaps one of the most powerful areas in the 2007 version for templates, and that is going to the online library of templates.
You will need to be able to access the Internet for this feature to work. If you're ever interested in the new office templates that are available online, you can always come to this area here, select a category and have the latest and greatest templates made available for you. It gives you a preview of each of the different templates that are available. For example, I can look at my personal monthly budget, or look at a marketing budget plan. If I'm interested in this particular template, I can download it.
It identifies for you that you have to be working with genuine office products in order to continue. You click on Continue, it brings down the information, and it presents it for you in a ready to use format. So there's lots of great things that you can do with this application in using templates. Let's see what more we can do in using styles and auto formats in next movie.
