In Excel 2010: Pivot Tables in Depth, author Curt Frye provides comprehensive, hands-on tutorials on Excel PivotTables, including more advanced techniques such as using macros and the new PowerPivot add-in. The course shows how to connect and consolidate data sources to power PivotTables, sort and filter records, display data in a PivotChart, print tables and charts, and also introduces the DAX language for performing advanced summaries in PowerPivot. Exercise files are included with the course.
When you're ready to start using Microsoft PowerPivot for Excel you can download it from the web site powerpivot.com. Once you're on that site, click the Download link and then follow the download instructions. I won't read the prerequisites or register to download the trial, because I already have Office 2010 installed. So I'll go down to what is currently the third link and click the "see details" item next to download PowerPivot for Excel 2010.
In this case, we are using the 32-bit version of Excel 2010 so we will use that version of PowerPivot, and I'll click the PowerPivot link and we go to the Microsoft Download Center. And if I scroll down using my mouse's scroll wheel, I can select the version I want to download, which is the x86 version, and then I will click the Download button. I am asked if I want to save the file or run it. in this case I will just save it, and I will save it to my Downloads folder and click Save.
Once the download is complete you can close the folder and then close out of your web browser and now I will open my Downloads folder and double-click PowerPivot_for_Excel_x86. I will verify that I do want to run the file and step through the Excel PowerPivot Setup Wizard. So I will click Next to go past the first screen. I will accept the terms in the license agreement, click Next, and I'll just type in a company, lynda.com.
click Next and then click Install. And now that it's done, I can click Finish. I'll close my Windows Explorer window and run Excel. As Excel starts you'll see that it has loaded the PowerPivot Add-in and then when you run the program for the first time after you install PowerPivot, a warning box appears indicating that it has installed a customization and asking you if you want to keep it.
You can either select not to install it if you don't recognize the publisher or you can choose to keep the installation by clicking the Install button. So this case, we are familiar with the program and we did want to install it so we can click Install. When we do, Excel installs PowerPivot and the PowerPivot tab appears on the Ribbon. Now I'll click it to make sure all the tools are there and everything looks to be in order. Now that PowerPivot is installed we can start downloading data and working with it quickly and efficiently.
