Video: What is Elements?

Photoshop Elements offers everything a non-professional photographer needs to work with his or her photos after shooting. Most people know Elements for its photo editing capabilities, but that's not all that it offers. Elements can take you through an entire post processing workflow that includes importing your photos, organizing them, editing them, using them in creative projects, and sharing them with family and friends. And it does all that in a friendly way that's accessible to the many folks who take photos of the people, places, and events in their everyday lives.

What is Elements?

Photoshop Elements offers everything a non-professional photographer needs to work with his or her photos after shooting. Most people know Elements for its photo editing capabilities, but that's not all that it offers. Elements can take you through an entire post processing workflow that includes importing your photos, organizing them, editing them, using them in creative projects, and sharing them with family and friends. And it does all that in a friendly way that's accessible to the many folks who take photos of the people, places, and events in their everyday lives.

Here's a brief introduction to each of the main functions of Elements with more to come on each in this course. First, Elements helps you get photos out of your camera whether that's a digital point-and-shoot, a camera phone, or an SLR. Second, Elements offers efficient ways to manage your photos. As your collection of digital photos grows you need a good system to keep track of them. Arranging your photos into folders in your operating system is a start, but as you shoot more and more, folders alone usually aren't the best solution for quickly finding just the photo that you're looking for.

So Elements Organizer offers additional options for managing photos, from keywords to virtual albums to three special views that help you organize and find photos by people, by places, and by events. Third, Elements really shines when it comes to photo editing. You have a choice of editing environments in Elements that vary in terms of ease of use and range of features. When your goal is to adjust lots of photos quickly you'll appreciate the streamlined controls in the Editor's Quick Fix workspace or the one-click adjustments in the Organizer's Photo Fix pane.

When you want step-by-step instructions for a particular editing technique you might look to the Guided Edit workspace in the Editor. And when you want to correct or enhance your best photos with access to a full featured photo editor you'll be amazed at how much the Expert Edit workspace has to offer. Fourth, Elements helps you incorporate your photos into creative projects, like greeting cards, books, and calendars. You can access workspaces for projects like these from the Create menu which you'll find in both the organizer and the editor.

Fifth, now that you've got your photos and projects looking good, you'll want to share them. The sharing features built into Elements help you share directly from the program to Facebook, email, and more. So back to the question that's the title of this movie, what is Elements? It's a one-stop solution for the major challenges that we all face now that we're shooting digitally at all levels of photography.
