Using the exercise files

If you're a premium member of the online training library. You have access to some exercise files that I prepared for you to use to work along with me through this course. Now, don't worry if you don't have access to those files. You can use your own photos as practice files to work with me through the course. If you do download the exercise files from the lynda.com site Be sure to unzip the exercise files folder. I suggest you put your exercise files on your desktop so they're easy to access. Let's take a look inside the exercise files here on my desktop.

You can see that the files are organized by chapter, and inside each chapter, by sub folders that correspond to the number of the movie in that chapter. You may notice that a number gets skipped here and that's because not all movies have exercise files. If I look inside one of these sub folders, you can see the photos that will be using as exercise files for that movie. So that's what the exercise files look like. But you'll actually be accessing the exercise files not from your hard drive but from inside Elements organizer. So let's see how we can import these exercise files into the organizer.

Here in Elements organizer, I'm working in the brand new blank x files catalog that I showed you how to make in the last movie. So if you haven't listened to that movie, please go back and listen to it now. To import the exercise files into this catalog in the organizer, I'll go up to the Import button at the top-left of the organizer. And I'll choose From Files and Folders and then I'll navigate to my desktop and then to my exercise files folder. It's very important that I leave this option, Get Photos from Subfolders checked because as we've seen the exercise files are located in sub folders.

I'm going to leave all of the other options at their defaults. And by the way, if you are on the Mac, your window may look slightly different than this but all the important fields are there. I'm now going to go down and click the Get media button. And Elements goes ahead and imports all the photos in the Exercise Files folder. A couple of those photos happen to have keyword tags embedded in them. And so you'll probably see this window. Don't bother checking any of these boxes because you don't need to import the keyword tags. Just click OK to dismiss this dialog, and in just a moment, you'll see a thumbnail sized copy of each of the photos in the exercise files.

Right now Elements is showing us the last import. If there were other photos in this catalog to see those as well. We would click the Back button to go back to the main view of the media browser. As you are working along with me through the course. You can access the files for a particular movie by clicking on the corresponding folder number in the My Folders panel in the column on the left side of the organizer. And when you do that, you will see just the photos that I'm going to use in that particular movie here in the media browser. Ready for you to use as you work with through the course.
