Video: Using email and Photo Mail

Have you ever received an email with a huge photograph attached that takes forever to download or an email that has a photograph that won't even open? Then you know the importance of preparing photos correctly for sharing by email. Elements Email Attachment feature and its Photo Mail feature will take care of that for you. Both of those features are located here in the Share panel of the Organizer. There is the Email Attachment feature and the Photo Mail feature. We're going to be looking at each of those in this movie. I'm working sky6.JPG from the 14_01_email subfolder of the Chapter 14 exercise files.

Using email and Photo Mail

Have you ever received an email with a huge photograph attached that takes forever to download or an email that has a photograph that won't even open? Then you know the importance of preparing photos correctly for sharing by email. Elements Email Attachment feature and its Photo Mail feature will take care of that for you. Both of those features are located here in the Share panel of the Organizer. There is the Email Attachment feature and the Photo Mail feature. We're going to be looking at each of those in this movie. I'm working sky6.JPG from the 14_01_email subfolder of the Chapter 14 exercise files.

I'll select that image and click Email Attachments to look at that feature first. I can adjust the dimensions and the compression quality of this file. Those are the two parameters that control the estimated size of the attachment. I'll click the Maximum Photo Size menu and I would recommend choosing either Small or Very Small as the size of this file. I'll pick Very Small. Then I'll go to the Quality slider. I would suggest choosing a compression quality of maybe 5 or 6 for an email file. There is an estimate here of the amount of time that this file might take to download. Then I'm going to click the Next button. In this panel, I'm going to type the text of an email message, and then I'll choose the recipient of the message. I have one person already in my address book. That's Kirk.

If I want to send this message to someone whose name doesn't appear here, then I'll click the icon on the top right of this box to open my contact book, where I can create a new contact or even import the contacts from the email client on my computer. I'm going to Cancel here and Cancel here and I'll select Kirk as the recipient of this email. Then I'm going to click the Next button and Elements is going to open my email client and prepare this message for me with the photograph compressed and attached to the email.

I can see that the email is ready down here in the taskbar so I'll click that button and here is my email. It has all of the fields filled in including the recipient, the subject and the attached photo, which has been compressed to only 17 kilobytes. To send this message I'll just click the Send button and off it goes. Now I would like to show you the Photo Mail feature. Again, with this image selected, I'm going to click Photo Mail. There really aren't any options on the first screen, so I click Next and here again I can type a message, select my recipient and click Next. Here's where the Photo Mail feature differs.

This is the Stationery and Layouts Wizard, which I can use to design a rich email, complete with graphics and a frame around my photo. I'm going to go to the Categories here on the left and see what's available. I'll click All Occasions and then I'll click Frames 1, and in the preview box on the right I can see the message and my photo with a blue frame. I can try out some other frames here. Each one is different. Some are really nice! Then there are all kinds of categories of graphics. In the Animals category, for example, I can add a blue background with the silhouettes of birds, some kind of scary bugs and so on. There is a lot to explore in Outdoors category, with a nice nature template. Templates for Seasons, Autumn, Snow, Summer and Spring. I really like that one. I think I'll keep that one and I'm going to click Next Step.

Here I can customize this stationery layout. I can change the size of the photo. I can change the layout so that there is a place for a caption to the left of this photo. I can change the font and the size of the borders, the border color and then I can click on Enter Caption Here and type my own caption. These are the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. I'll click Next.

In the email program on my computer and I see it here in the taskbar, I bring it up and here is my Photo Mail, which sends this photo embellished with graphics, background and frame. I just need to click the Send button and Kirk will be getting my email with my Photo Mail embedded in it. So the next time that you want to send a photo by email make use of Elements' Email Attachments feature or the Photo Mail feature.
