If you have a digital camera, you know that one of its advantages is that it makes you feel free to shoot lots of photos. That's great! But the downside of that is that your collection of photos is probably growing faster than you ever thought possible. Lots of people are realizing that they need a system for keeping track of their many digital photos. That's where Elements' Organizer comes in. It offers some relatively simple tools for organizing and finding your photos. The Organizer is now an important part of Photoshop Elements. It offers so many features that we are going to spend lots of time talking about it in this course.
How does the Organizer work? It uses a system of catalogs, which are actually under-the-hood databases. To keep track of your photos, no matter where you keep your photos. Whether your photos are on your computer, on offline media like, CDs or DVDs, or online at Photoshop.com, the Organizer knows where your photos are located. In this movie, I'm going to show you what the Organizer catalogs do, and I'm going to show you how to create a special catalog that you'll be using to store your exercise files for this course.
I'm starting here in the Welcome Screen and I'm going to click the Organize button to launch the Organizer. On the left in the Photo Browser, you can see a few of my own photos. You won't see these photos in your copy of Elements. If you look at the bottom left of the screen, you'll see that it says My Catalog. That is the name of the default catalog, or database, that Elements uses. Normally, you're going to store all of your photographs in this single catalog, and not bother making any other catalogs. The reason for that is that when you ask Elements to find a particular photo, it can only search in one catalog at a time. So it makes sense to store all your photographs in a single catalog.
There are a few special circumstances when you might want to make a new catalog. For example, let's say you're wedding photographer and you're shooting for different clients, you might want to have a separate catalogs for each client. Another special case is when you're taking this course. I'm going to show you how to create a separate catalog to store the exercise files, so that they don't get mixed up with your own personal files that you might have now or in the future in the catalog named My Catalog. To make that new catalog, I'm going to go to the File menu at the top of the screen and I'm going to go down to Catalog. That opens the Catalog Manager. If you read the first paragraph here, it says pretty much what I just told you, that most people keep other photos in one catalog. To make our new catalog for the exercise files, click the New button at the right side of the Catalog Manager. And let's enter a name for the new catalog. We'll use PSE7 Ex Files, for exercise files.
By default, Import free music into this catalog is checked. What that does is import some music that comes with Elements into the catalog, so that later you can make a slideshow of your photos that includes music. I'm going to click OK, and if you look at the bottom left of the screen now, you see that we've made a new catalog called PSE7 Ex Files, and the Photo Browser in the Organizer is now blank, because there is nothing yet in this catalog. In the next movie, I'm going to show you how to bring files into this catalog from the Exercise Files folder on your desktop.
