Video: Sharing photos online at

Using the online service that I showed you how to sign up for in the last movie, you can display your own photos online at your personal website at You can make an album of your photos here in Elements and then upload those albums. That will allow you to view your photos from any computer that has a web browser and an Internet connection and it's also a great way for other people to view your photos. Here in the Organizer, notice that I already have an album of photos of kayaking. I'll click on that to show it to you.

Photoshop Elements 8 for Windows Essential Training highlights the important features of this comprehensive image organization and photo enhancement application. Photographer Jan Kabili shows how to use Photoshop Elements to organize and edit photos, build photos into projects like slideshows and photo books, and share photos with family and friends. Jan explains how to train Photoshop Elements 8 to recognize and tag faces, use the Smart Brush for targeted adjustments, and share photos using Adobe's online service, She also dives deep into the application's editing tools, which rival those of the full product, Photoshop, in their ability to take snapshots and turn them into great photos. Exercise files accompany the course.

Topics include:
  • Finding photos by keywords, tags, and ratings
  • Mapping photos
  • Applying Photomerge Exposure in Guided Edit
  • Adding adjustment layers to correct a photo's tone and color
  • Reducing digital noise in photos
  • Creating a photo slideshow with audio and transitions
  • Preparing photos for the web

Sharing photos online at

Using the online service that I showed you how to sign up for in the last movie, you can display your own photos online at your personal website at You can make an album of your photos here in Elements and then upload those albums. That will allow you to view your photos from any computer that has a web browser and an Internet connection and it's also a great way for other people to view your photos. Here in the Organizer, notice that I already have an album of photos of kayaking. I'll click on that to show it to you.

This is an album that I showed you how to make in an earlier movie. New in Elements 8 is the ability to upload an existing album. You don't have to make a new one just for purposes of uploading. So, we could use this album or I could make a new album to upload. I'll use this one but if you haven't been following along then you might want to go back to the movie on creating albums and make an album like this kayaking album, and then come back to this movie to learn how to share it online. I'm going to click the Share tab here in the Task pane in the Organizer and I'm going to choose Online Album.

Here's where I can decide if I want to share this existing album or create a brand new one. I'll leave Share Existing Album selected and if I had more than one album, I would click on the one that I wanted to share. Here I can decide what I want to do with this album. I do want to share it to but I have a couple of other interesting options. I can export the album to my hard disk and then if I happen to be building a website with a regular website building program, say Dreamweaver, I would have that album available to include in that website.

I'll just leave this set to and I'll click Next. And that sets Elements to building an interactive online album for me, using one of the many templates that comes with the program. At the top of the screen is an area from which I can select from a whole collection of templates that come with Elements. There are Classic templates and you can see small thumbnails of what each looks like here. Family templates, Fun, Occasions and so on.

I am going to go to the Travel category and I'm going to try out this template. I'll double-click the template and Elements puts my photos into this template. It even gives me some options here for setting up a slideshow that will automatically play through the photos online. For example, I can change the background color of the slideshow, so if I click there, I can choose a different color. Maybe I'll choose a kind of gold color and click OK. I also can choose to include sound effects in the slideshow and then I'll click Refresh to see those changes and there's my new background color.

If I want to cycle through the photos that I have, that will show up in this online gallery, I can click these arrows, forward or backward, and if I decide I really don't like this template, I can just try another one. Coming up to the template area, I'll try this Road Trip template, double-clicking that, and then I'm going to click the arrows in this template and this is a really fun interactive template. So, that's how that one will look. I am going to leave it at that and then I'm going to come over to the Share tab again and I'm going to click Share to

I also want to display this in my gallery, which means that it will be public so that everybody can see it on Then I want to tell all my friends that I have a new gallery up there, so I'm going to type 'Hi everyone.' 'Check out my new photos at http:// jfklynda,' which is my personal gallery on that I set up in the last movie, and then '' Then I can choose who from my address book to send that e-mail to.

I can go to my address book and add people to the address book if I want, but I'm just going to send it to this fictitious fellow, John Ryan. I also can choose whether viewers who see my photos online will be able to download copies of those photos. That's something I often want to do when I'm sharing photos with family. I can also choose whether viewers will be able to order commercially made prints of those photos. So, I'll check that too. And then I'll click Done. That takes me back to the Organizer and I'm going to click on the Organize tab so that I can see that album which now has an icon here indicating it's being shared at Photoshop Online, and an icon here if I decide I don't want to share it on Photoshop Online, I can stop sharing, and then if I want to share again, I can click the Share icon.

I'm going to right-click the name of the album and that brings up some other options. I can edit this album. So, if I choose Edit kayaking album, I now see the five photos that are in this album here in my Content panel. I am going to click off of all of those and just select one of them, this vertical photo, by clicking on it and I could delete that photo from the album by clicking the Minus symbol down here. And I can also change the order of the photos in the album by clicking on one and dragging it to a different position among the thumbnails. Then I'll click Done and that edits my album.

I am going to right-click on the name of the kayaking album and from the contextual menu I'm going to choose to view this album online. If you don't see this choice here, try clicking off of the album and then back on it. So, I'll click on View Kayaking Album Online and that opens my default web browser directly to my area of And it displays this slideshow. I am going to make the web browser bigger by clicking the Maximize button here. Now this is the view that anyone who goes to my area of will see.

My viewers will be able to play a slideshow by clicking this button and that will take them through my photos in the template that I chose in Elements. They have other options of how to view my photos over here. They can choose to see them in a thumbnail grid, which takes them back to the gallery area of my space on And in this gallery area, if I had uploaded other albums, they would be here and my viewers could see them.

Here they could choose other layouts, like this carousel type layout with its automatically playing slideshow that cycles through the photos in the album. Viewers have other options down here. Back in Elements, you remember that I checked the box that allows viewers to download copies of my photos, so they can click on one of these photos and then download it to their desktop. Or I enabled the option that allows viewers to order commercially printed prints of the photos. And a viewer could also copy the URL of this album as a link so that they could quickly get back to this page.

I am going to stop this slideshow. Now, if I'm the person who's viewing the album, I can sign into my account by clicking Sign In, and I'll type my signing information, and here at, I get a different view than everyone else. I have the ability to upload photos and video directly to my account from here and there is all kinds of useful information over here on the left, including information about Mobile, another exciting new development.

So, I think you can see the potential for being a really useful feature to extend what you have on your desktop online, so that the whole community can participate in viewing your photos. I hope you take advantage of it.
