In this course, author Jan Kabili introduces the photo organizing, editing, and sharing features of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10, the less expensive version of Photoshop that’s ideal for casual photographers who want to achieve professional results. The course covers importing, organizing, and finding photos with the Organizer. It explains how and when to use each of the editing workspaces—from the simple Quick Fix and Guided Edit workspaces to the Full Edit workspace for enhancing your photos—including making photo corrections, retouching, compositing images, and adding text. The final chapter offers creative ways to share photos with Elements, including print projects like greeting cards, calendars, and books, emailing photos, and posting them on Facebook and Flickr.
If you like to share photos by email, you can do it two ways. In the last movie I showed you that both Windows and Mac users of Elements can send photos as attachments to emails from right inside of Elements. If you are a Windows user, you have another option. You can send Photo Mail from inside of Elements. A Photo Mail message is one that has a photo embedded right in the message and you can dress that up with graphics and text, frames and backgrounds, as I will show you how to do in this movie. Sorry Mac users but this is a Windows only feature.
There are a couple of things that I would do in advance of sending a Photo Mail, first I would be sure to tell Elements which email client I use and as I showed you in the last movie, that's done by going to the Edit menu and down to Preferences and over to the Sharing Preferences and selecting your email client from the dropdown menu there. If you have done that once, you don't have to do it again. Another thing I am going to do is to add a caption to the photo that I'm going to include in this Photo Mail. To do that out in the media browser, I will click on the photo, and then I will go up to the Edit menu and I will choose Add Caption.
In the Add Caption dialog box, I will come in here and I'll type of a little caption and I will click OK. Now I am ready to create my Photo Mail with this photo. I will select the photo and I will go over to Photo Mail in the Share tab on the right side of the screen. The Share tab switches to show me some fields for creating a Photo Mail. The selected photo is already going to be included here. If I had some other photos in my media browser, I could drag those in to. But I don't like to add too many photos to a single email because I want the email to stay small.
So I will just go with this one photo. I do want to include that caption that I had added to the photo, so I will make sure that Include Caption is checked here. Down here I can see the Estimated Size of this Photo Mail. That's reasonable, so I am going to go with that and click Next. And that gives me some more fields to fill out to create my Photo Mail. Here, I can enter the email message. I will just type over the highlighted dummy text, and then I will come down to the Select Recipients field. Here I will see a list of all of the people that I have in the Contact book that I'm building at photoshop.com which is part of the online services that Adobe offers.
I only have this one person in that address book so far, but I do want to send this email to that particular person, so I'll check her name. But if you don't have a contact book or address book like this, that's fine, you can address your email separately in just a moment. I will come down and I will click Next and that opens the Stationery & Layouts Wizard, where I can design my Photo Mail. This is one of the preset designs; it's one of the less fancy ones. Notice that it does include the text that I had entered in the message area and it includes the caption that I added to the photo.
And there's a frame around the photo and a background. There are lots of other preset templates here for Photo Mail. And you can spend lots of time looking through these categories and choosing the one that you would like. Here's one for family memories, here's one for a kids party and here in the Fun Stuff category I like this Champagne template. The bubbles up here really echo the bubbles in the photo. So I'm going to go with this. There is more that I can do to customize this Photo Mail based on this template.
To do that, I will click the Next Step button. In this screen, I can change the layout, I can change the size of the photo, let's see how it looks a little smaller. I can change the font for the text; I can change the color of the text. I like the little drop shadow behind the photo but if I want to see what it looks like without that drop shadow, I will uncheck Show drop shadows. I think I am going to go with that drop shadow. And there is my Photo Mail, custom-design and ready to go. So I will click the Next button and that closes the Stationery wizard and takes me back to the Organizer.
And I see down here in the Status Bar, that my mail client is trying to get my attention, because it's all ready to go with my Photo Mail embedded in this mail message. Let me drag that up higher so you can see the whole thing, I will make this longer. As you can see the message is automatically address to Patty M. I can add more recipients here by just typing their addresses if I want to. I am going to change the Subject line, so I will highlight that dummy text and I'm going to type text of my own and then down here is the Photo Mail that I designed.
This text is added automatically. If I don't want that in my message, I will click and drag over it, and I will press Delete or Backspace on my keyboard. I will sign the email and off it goes. I will click Send. Now if the recipient doesn't have images turned on in your email client, she may not see that Photo Mail. So if you hear that that's the case, you can send her another email later using the email attachments feature, which I showed you in the last movie.
