Photoshop Elements 7 is packed with features to help amateur photographers with every stage of digital photo processing, from getting organized to sharing projects with family and friends. In Photoshop Elements 7 for Windows Essential Training, Jan Kabili shares workflow techniques for organizing, editing, creating projects, and sharing. She also demonstrates how to enhance photos with this budget-friendly software. Jan explains the latest updates to the Organizer and Editor workspaces, and also covers new features like the Smart Brush tool and Photoshop.com integration. Elements is very well known for its project features, and Jan shows how to create books, collages, panoramas, and more. Example files accompany the course.
One of the fun things to do in Photoshop Elements is to change the content of images. There are a couple of tools that can help you do that, we looked at the healing brush here and the Spot Healing Brush in an earlier movie. But there is another tool to consider when you are trying to make something disappear in an image and that is the Clone Stamp tool. I'm using footprints.jpg from the 10_05-remove subfolder in the Chapter 10 exercise files. I'm going to use the Clone Stamp tool to cover up some of the footsteps on the beach here.
Before I do that I'm going to go to the Layers palette and make a new layer. I'll name that layer Cover Up and then I'm going to the Options bar for the Clone Stamp tool and I'll make sure that all layers is checked. With that new layer and all layers checked, the Clone Stamp tool will sample good pixels from all the layers including the layer with the photograph on it and place them down on the cover up layer. That will give me the freedom to work with that layer if I don't like the way that the Cover Up comes out.
Also in the Options bar I'm going to go to the Mode menu. The Mode menu contains a lot of different formulas for blending the cover up with the pixels on the photo layer below, because I'm going to be using light pixels from the lighter part of the beach to cover the darker footprints, I'm going to use a formula called Lighten. And that will help blend the footprints into the beach, so whenever you are trying to cover a dark area with lighter pixels, try the Lighten Blend mode. Now I'm going to come into the image and I'm going to make my brush smaller by pressing the left bracket key.
I'll make it just big enough to cover the footsteps back here and then I'm going to hold down the Alt key on my keyboard that changes the cursor to a target line. And I'll click to sample some good pixels from this clean area of the beach. And then I'll move over the footsteps and I'll click and as I do that, the footsteps began to disappear covered up by the good pixels, there are few more. So as you can see the Clone Stamp tool can be a useful way to change the content of your images.
