A color cast is an overall wash of a particular color that comes from the lighting in which a photograph is shot. Sometimes a color cast can make a photo look unnatural, or when the subject of a photo in something like food, a color cast can make it downright unappealing. So let me show you how to quickly and automatically neutralize a color cast in a photo like this. Here in the Expert Edit workspace, I'm going to go up to the Enhance menu and down to Adjust Color and over to Remove Color Cast. That opens this dialog, which tells me that to correct the color cast in the photo, I simply have to take this Eyedropper Tool and use it to click on something in the image that I think should be either gray, white, or black, in other words, something that should be a neutral color.
I will try clicking on one of the spots in this piece of cheese. Now that did remove the warm color cast that I started with, but I think it's gone too far in the other direction. Now some of the cheese looks blue. So if I don't like the result that I get with my first click, I'll click somewhere else. I'll try clicking here on the white part of this cheese, and if I don't like that result I'll try somewhere else, until I get a result that I like. What's happening is that Elements is taking the pixel on which I'm clicking and setting that to a neutral color and then all the other colors are falling into place around that one, so now the image doesn't appear to have that extreme warm color cast.
I'm satisfied with this result, so I'll just click OK to dismiss this dialog box and I'll save the image. Now do keep it mind that not all color casts are unwanted. You may want to keep a color cast that you get. For example, if you shoot at sunset on a beach, maybe you like the warm golden glow that you get. But when you do have a subject that you think looks unnatural or unappealing with a color cast, try the technique I just showed you to quickly and automatically neutralize a color cast.
