Importing from watch folders (Windows only)

Video: Importing from watch folders (Windows only)

This is a movie for Windows users only, because on a Mac the Organizer doesn't have a Watched Folders feature as Windows does. In the Watch Folders dialog box I will make sure there's a check mark next to Watch Folders and their Sub-Folders for New Files. Then I will tell Elements which folder I want it to watch by clicking the Add button. In this Browse For Folder dialog box I'll navigate to the folder that I want to watch. I'm going to choose my Exercise Files folder which is on my Desktop.

Importing from watch folders (Windows only)

This is a movie for Windows users only, because on a Mac the Organizer doesn't have a Watched Folders feature as Windows does. In the Watch Folders dialog box I will make sure there's a check mark next to Watch Folders and their Sub-Folders for New Files. Then I will tell Elements which folder I want it to watch by clicking the Add button. In this Browse For Folder dialog box I'll navigate to the folder that I want to watch. I'm going to choose my Exercise Files folder which is on my Desktop.

If you don't have an Exercise Files Folder you can use any folder in your computer that's readily accessible to practice. I will click OK and you can now see the path to my new Watched Exercise Files folder here in the dialog box. Next, I will Elements what I wanted to do when I add a new file to my Exercise Files folder or to any of its subfolders not through Elements, but out in my operating system and I will show you that just a second. So what I would like Elements to do in that case is to Notify Me that I have new photos.

Alternatively, I could choose to have Elements automatically add those new photos to my Organizer. But I like making those decisions on a case-by-case basis. So I'll leave this set to Notify Me. That's all there is to setting up a Watched Folder. Before I close out of this dialog box you may have noticed that I have another folder in my list of Folders to Watch and that's my Pictures folder. The Pictures folder is a Watched Folder by default, but you can remove this folder from this list if you don't want it to be a Watched Folder.

To do that I would just select the Pictures folder and click Remove. I am actually not going to click Remove, because I like having my Pictures folder as a Watched Folder. But if your workflow is to always bring new photos into the Pictures Folder and the frequent alerts from Elements that you have in your work is bothering you, then you can just remove this folder from Folders to Watch. Or at some point you might decide not to watch any folders are subfolders, in which case you can come in here and uncheck the field at the top of this dialog box.

I am going to leave everything as you see it here and click OK. Back in my Organizer, which is in Folder Location view, the view we will be using throughout this course, over on the left I can see the hierarchy of folders on my computer. As you can see, there is now a binocular icon on my Exercise Files folder. That's the icon that indicates that this is now a Watched Folder. Let's see what happens when I move the file into a Watched Folder or into one of its subfolders. I am going to go out on my desktop where I have a couple of new photos.

You can try this with any photo that's on your computer as long as you haven't already included that photo in your Elements Organizer, because if you move a file outside of the Elements Organizer that's already been included there, you can cause Elements to lose track of the file. I will tell you more about how to move photos that are in your Organizer in a later movie. But these photos are not already in my Organizer. So I'm going to open my Exercise Files folder here on the desktop and I'm going to open my chapter01 Importing folder and I'm going to go down to my 01_09 folder.

That's the subfolder into which I'm going to move these two photographs. So I'll select them and drag them there. Now I'm going to go back to my Organizer in Elements. Right away I see this alert that an Element has found some new files in a Watched Folder and it's asking if I want to include those files in my Organizer. So I'm going to say Yes and that opens this dialog box where I get a second chance at this. I can now decide, hey, I really don't want to include these files in my Organizer in which case I would click Deselect All or I could leave both of these files checked in which case they would both be included in my Organizer or I could just uncheck one of them.

Let's do that, and then I will click OK. I get the usual alert that the only items I can see right now are those I have just imported. I will click OK there to dismiss that and I will click the Show All button which allows me to see all of the photos that have been included in the Organizer that are in this particular folder, the 01_09 folder. Remember, I decided to only include one of the two new photos in my Organizer. Both of the photos are in this folder, but I'm having Elements Organizer keep track of only one of them.

What I really like about this feature is that setting the Exercise Files folder as a Watched Folder made all of the subfolders inside of the Exercise Files folder also be watched by the Organizer. I think that's really convenient. Now of course, you don't have to use Watched Folders at all. You can just include your photos in the Organizer manually as I have shown you how to do in the other movies in this chapter. But setting up one or more Watched Folders is a great way to remember to keep your Organizer catalog up to date with new photos.
