In Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac Essential Training, Ted LoCascio teaches casual photographers how to organize, edit, and share their digital image libraries using this powerful software package from Adobe. He tours the included Adobe Bridge application, used for importing and organizing photographs, and explores every feature of Elements itself. With this movie I would like to show you how to generate a PDF slide show that you can then share with your friends and your family. I'm currently in the Adobe Bridge application and I'm viewing all of the images in our catalog images folder here in the Content panel. I would like to filter down what we're displaying in the Content panel using the Filter panel over here to the lower left. Notice where we have this Rating section, I'm going to click on the five start rating. To display these nine images that I have already applied a rating to.
So these are all images that I have picked out, given a five star rating to, in order to indicate to myself that I want to create a PDF slide show based off of with these images. So now when I have these images displayed inside of the Content panel, what I can do is go under the Tools menu, choose Photoshop Elements and then choose PDF Slide Show. That brings us into the Elements' Editing workspace and opens up the PDF Slide Show dialog box. You can see the file names for all of those images are listed already here in the Source Files portion of the dialog. So we don't have to click Browse, we don't have to tell our system where these images are. We did it all using Bridge. We didn't even have to open up the images inside of Elements. As you can see in the Project bin, it's empty.
All right, so that's the beauty of using of Bridge and that script to access this Slide Show command. So now that we know we have all of our images already setup and shows in to create the slide show from, we then need to choose our Output Options. We have two options: Multi-Page Documents or Presentation. Notice that the bottom of the dialog box has these presentation options and they are currently grayed out, that's because we have the Multi-Page Document option selected up here. What that means is when you create the PDF slide show, whoever is viewing it is going to have to manually change the pages, whereas if you choose the Presentation option, the pages will advance by themselves using the time signature that you choose here, it's defaulting to 5 Seconds. I'm actually going to use the Presentation option and I'm going to make that a little shorter, 3 Seconds. Advance Every 3 Seconds.
You can also choose continuously loop the slide show. I'm going to turn that on as well and then you can choose your Transition options if you click on the down facing arrow, we have all of these different options in here. I'm going to use the traditional, Fade option. Okay that's the common one and I actually like that a lot. So we will choose Fade. In this section up here, we can choose our Background. If we choose White, when you display the slide show in a PDF reader like Adobe Reader, it's going to place a white background around the image and then surround your white background will likely be black. So in that instance I would rather just choose Black so that we will see black from the edge of the image all the way around the screen. That actually I think looks nicer that way. So I'm going to choose black as my Background.
You can also choose to include information. Now the file has to already have this information in it. Of course all of your files have a file name, so if you were to choose that and click that option there and place a check there you also have the option to display the extension for the file and then it will display underneath the image. I don't see any reason to do that. If I'm going share the PDF slide show, I don't think they need to know the file name. If I have this information saved in the file things like Author and Copyright, you may want to display those. However, in these particular images I don't believe I have saved Author and Copyright information. So I'm not going to turn that on. You can also turn on EXIF Info. This is information about the image and how it was taken. The stuff that was recorded by your camera. We don't need to turn that on and then of course Annotations and these are the other things that could be possibly be saved within the metadata of the file. You can choose to display that and if you do, you can choose the Font Size. Since I'm going to choose not to display any of those, I don't need to worry about the Font Size.
So now that I have chosen all of my Output Options and my Presentation options, I'm going to go ahead and just click Save. That's going to bring up a separate dialog box. It's the Save dialog box. It's going to ask us where we want to save this and I'm just going to save it to my Desktop. I'm going to name the slide show, Enzo slideshow. Something like that. We can chose to Hide the extension if we like by clicking that option there and then click Save, that's going to bring up a third dialog box. This one is the Save Adobe PDF dialog box.
Up here at the top, you can choose an Adobe PDF Preset. It's setting to the default High Quality option. I would like to actually choose the Smallest File Size option because I know that I'm probably going to want to email this or post it on the web somewhere and in that instance you want the smallest file size possible. Okay, because this one probably be too large to email. So we're going to choose Smallest File Size. For Compatibility, I would always keep this at Acrobat 5 just in case you have people with older versions of Acrobat that want to view the file.
For Standard I will just chose None. We don't need to worry about this right now. We also have these different panels you can scroll through here, if you decide you want to change any of these options. I wouldn't recommend that you do, these are rather advanced. I would stick with the settings that are in the Preset. Just know that if you want to email this you could choose either smallest file size or PDF/X1 would also be small, either one. So now that we know that we can also turn on one other option that I do think we actually should turn on and that is View PDF After Saving. We turn that on, we should be able to view this in Acrobat Reader, as long as we have Acrobat installed on your machine, it should automatically launch and display the PDF slide show. We will see if that works.
Click Save PDF. That was the last dialog box. It's going to go through and create the slide show and here is Acrobat Reader. Okay, it's giving us the Full Screen warning. Saying, "This document is trying to put Acrobat in full screen mode." That's because we saved this in a presentation. Okay, and presentations are done in Full Screen mode. So yes, we do want it to do this and I'm going to say "Remember my choice for this document." So that we don't have to see this every time. Acrobat tries to launch a presentation. We will click Yes, and now we're viewing our slide show.
Okay, remember we have got 3 second transitions, there is the Fade and it's going to go through and show every image in the slide show. It's also going to keep on playing because we turn on the loop feature. So once it reaches the last slide, which would be the ninth slide, it will go background and show slide 1 again. So this is a great way to select images that you think are some of your best images in your collection, rate them in Bridge and then right from Bridge go straight to the PDF Slide Show command. That way they will already be setup in the dialog box, you just need to choose your Output Options and save your PDF slide show.
