Video: Backup and synchronization with photoshop.com

Photoshop Elements 10 makes it easy for you to backup your photos to the Clouds, so to speak, so that you always have a copy of those photos, should something ever go haywire with your computer. Let's take a look. I'm beginning this video with the Elements 10 Organizer already opened on my computer. And I want to show you where backup synchronization takes place. So, first of all I want to point you to the Backup Synchronization Status icon which you'll notice is in the upper right corner of my screen on Mac. On Windows, it'll be down here in the lower right corner of your screen in the Task Bar.

So, Backup Synchronization basically allows you to take photos in your Catalog and synchronize them to your Photoshop.com account. Now, to demonstrate this, I'm going to go to the Adobe Elements 10 Organizer menu on Mac, or the Edit menu on Windows. And I'm going to choose Preferences. And one of the categories over here on the left-hand side is Backup Synchronization. Now if I click on that option, you'll notice that right now I'm not really seeing anything because I'm not signed in using my Adobe ID.

So, if you're already signed in, you probably have more information in here, so I'm going to go ahead and sign in so I can see the same thing. I'm going to enter my credentials, Sign in, and if I click OK, the minute I do that, it's going to refresh this dialog and show me the information about my current Backup Synchronization Status. Now, first and foremost, up here in the upper left corner, I have a check box that allows me to turn Backup Synchronization on. So, you want to make sure that we have that turned on so that everything works properly.

In addition, it shows you your current storage usage. So, you could see that I'm using about 178 MB of my overall 2 GB of storage. Should you need more storage at any time, you could simply click the Upgrade Membership button, and that will display your options, as far as getting additional storage. That additional storage is, in fact, a paid upgrade. Now, in addition, we can click on the little disclosure triangle to show you the Advanced Backup Synchronization Options.

So, you can see that we can set it up so new albums created will backup sync automatically. And you can set it up so that when I delete a file online, ask before deleting it on the computer. So, the synchronization part of this Backup Synchronization is really literal. If I use this feature and I then in turn delete the photo on Photoshop.com, it's going to delete it out of my Catalog as well, that is, if you have this option turned on.

We can also have it resolve any conflicts automatically, and we can restrict the backing up and syncing to files smaller than a certain size. So, these are just preferences that you can choose should you decide to do so. In addition, you can determine which files it should synchronize. By default, photos, videos, audios, and PDFs are synchronized. You can also synchronize your creations. Now, I'm going to close that. And then down here in this section, this is where I can determine which of my albums I want to synchronize. So, you can turn on synchronization.

You see right now, I have a Beach album that is being synchronized, and that is because this Beach category here has already been synchronized. Now, the Flowers album, I have not synchronized up to this point. So, if I wanted to synchronize them, I could simply turn on this check box and synchronization will literally begin. You can see right here, it automatically shows me the pending amount of data that's going to get backed up.

So, I'm not really going to do that right now, I'll turn that option off. And you'll notice that we also have an option to backup media not in any album. Okay, so any media that is not in any of your albums, we can, in fact, backup and synchronize. And then, we have this kind of All Inclusive button down here in the lower right to just backup and sync the entire Catalog. So, those are some of the options that you have to choose from. So, what I'll do is I'll turn on the flower synchronization, and I'm going to go ahead and click OK. And you'll notice that in the upper right corner of my screen in the Backup Synchronization Status, you can see that, it's automatically synchronizing that Flowers album.

And we can see that the icon for the Flowers album has changed as well. You can click on this icon and choose View Backup Sync Status, and we can see how it's in the process of copying these files up to the Photoshop.com server. I'm going to close that for now. And the other thing I wanted to point out is that when you're creating an album, so let's just create a temporary album here. I'm going to choose some of these shots of Colorado here.

When I create a new album, I'll choose New Album and I'll give it a name and I'll call this one Colorado. You'll notice that this option is available where I can set this to automatically backup and synchronize when the album is created. Now, if you were to turn that off for some reason and go ahead and click Done, you'll notice that Colorado is not being synchronized. You can turn that on in your Backup Synchronization Preferences, where we just were, but you can also go back into this album, if you right-click on that button and choose Edit Colorado Album, you can then turn it on right here, as well.

So, I'll go ahead and turn that option on, and I'll click the Done button, and now that has been added to the Backup Synchronization as well. So, in a few seconds, you'll see the status up here start to spin again indicating that the backup is taking place. So, this Backup Synchronization Agent icon will let you know what the current status is of the backup process. Once the synchronization is complete, you'll see that the status is now stopped, and if I click on this and choose View Backup Sync Status, it's telling me that I'm already in sync.

So, all the files have been synced up, and we're ready to go. Now, what I've done, is I've already logged into Photoshop.com using my web browser. And what I'm going to do, is I'm going to come up here to the Me section, and choose My Library. And what this is going to do is open up a new window with My Library, and you're going to see that all of the photos that are currently in My Library are the ones that I've synced from the albums inside of Photoshop Elements.

So, I can browse them here, I can share them from this location. You'll notice over here on the left-hand side, here are the albums that I've synchronized. And what's nice about the Photoshop.com website is that you can also log into Facebook, Flickr, Photobucket, and Picasa to share your photos to those locations as well. You can see here how having an Adobe ID is a no brainer, as it gives you the ability to backup your photos for safekeeping.

And if you realize you need more space, you can always buy more.
