Adding effects

Video: Adding effects

Another kind of special artistic effect that you can add to a photo is a photo effect. A photo effect is a little more complicated than a filter. When I apply a photo effect to an image, Elements runs a multiple step action that can include not only multiple filters, but also layer styles and new layers as well as artistic effects. Before I apply an effect, I'll go to the layers panel and I'm going to select the layer to which I want to apply this effect and that's going to be the Background layer. The Background layer in this file contains just the photo of the two birds on either side of this chair and then on the single bird layer, I have just that layer that's in the middle, surrounded by transparency.

Adding effects

Now some of the photo effects will apply to multiple layers in a file, but the effects I'm going to use in this lesson will affect only the selected layer. So I have selected the Background layer and now I'll go up to the Effects panel. If your Effects panel isn't open, you can open it from the Window menu at the top of the screen. I've selected the third icon here in the Effects panel which is the Photo Effect icon. Here on the right, I have a menu of categories of Photo Effects. There are some interesting ones to explore here in the Frame category, in the Old Photo category and in the Vintage Photo category which is the one I'm going to select now.

I really like this Old Paper effect which is the single photo effect that's here in the Vintage Photo category. To apply this effect to the Background layer, I'll click on the Old Paper effect and then I'll click the Apply button. You can see that that has created a new layer in the layers panel, this Background copy layer and this layer has a nice paper texture on it as well as this brown tint that you see in the image. The effect has no impact on the single bird because the single bird is located on a layer above the Background copy layer in the layers panel.

So I think that looks pretty nice as is, but I want to show you that you can add more than one photo effect to a layered image. This time I'd like to add a photo effect to the single bird layer. So I'd click on the single bird layer in the layers panel and I'm going to go to another category of Photo Effects. This time I'll choose the Monotone Color category. From here, I can choose any of these Tint effects. I'd like to tint the bird on the single bird layer blue. So I'll click on the Tint Blue icon and then I'll click Apply. You can see the result in the image and over in the layers panel, you can see that this effect created a new layer, the single bird copy layer that contains the bird tinted blue against its transparent background.

So that's how you can apply one or more photo effects to get a really unique look in your image.
