Create an Animated Star Field with Edge Animate

with Chris Converse

Video: Previewing the final project

(music playing) Hi! This is Chris Converse, and this is a course on creating an animated star field inside of Edge Animate. So what we're going to be doing here is using Edge's interface to create some animations, converting those animations into symbols that loop, and then we're going to be using some simple JavaScript and jQuery to generate, or multiply, those symbols across the stage. We are going to be using star animations here, randomizing both the timing and the position, and we're going to scatter these across the nighttime sky.

Author Chris Converse teaches you how to build randomized animations to create an effect that is always fresh and enticing.

This course was created and produced by Chris Converse. We are honored to host this content in the lynda.com library.

Topics include:
  • Creating web graphics
  • Adding artwork to an Edge composition
  • Setting measurements to ensure a responsive design
  • Creating nested symbols
  • Animating the rotation and opacity of an object
  • Creating a simple star from an ellipse

(music playing) Hi! This is Chris Converse, and this is a course on creating an animated star field inside of Edge Animate. So what we're going to be doing here is using Edge's interface to create some animations, converting those animations into symbols that loop, and then we're going to be using some simple JavaScript and jQuery to generate, or multiply, those symbols across the stage. We are going to be using star animations here, randomizing both the timing and the position, and we're going to scatter these across the nighttime sky.

Now, one of the advantages of a randomized animation is that it gives the user something that they can watch longer because they can predict what the animations can do. In addition, we're also going to be sensitive to responsive design techniques. We're going to set up our design to be responsive inside of Edge Animate, and we're also going to set up our script so that we don't generate stars outside of the width of the overall web window. So this means if we decrease the width of our web window, the stars that we generate are going to take up less space. So we're going to see, in this case, 150 stars be condensed into a smaller space, and then if we open the web window up even wider, we'll see that after a few seconds the stars will then begin to animate out and take up all of the available space.

So in addition to randomized stars and a responsive composition, we are also going to have the stars conform to the responsive design aspects of the composition as well. So I hope this course sounds interesting to you and if so, let's get started.
