Drupal 7: Creating and Editing Custom Themes shows the tools and techniques needed to build custom web sites with Drupal. Author Chaz Chumley introduces Drupal theme administration and takes a look at basic theming concepts, such as templates, regions, and variables. The course explores how Drupal default themes are configured and structured and how to install and edit a theme. The course also explores the tools a designer needs to create a Drupal 7 theme, using HTML, CSS, PHP, and Drupal templates, or migrate an existing Drupal 6 theme to Drupal 7. Exercise files are included with this course.
While we progress through each chapter of our series Drupal 7: Creating and Editing Custom Themes, we have provided all the files, assets, and database backups needed to make sure you can start and finish at any point while following along. In this video we will take a look at the Exercise folder which contains all the assets, database snapshots, design mockup, and completed theme. Once you've downloaded the Exercise Files and expanded them to your Desktop, you should have a folder that looks like this, and if we actually open up this folder, you're going to see that there are various folders for each chapter that you can use to follow along.
If I take a look at one of the folders you may find in there a .mysql.zip file. This file should allow you to do a database restore so that you can catch up with where we are currently in that chapter. For information on how to actually do a database restore, you can refer to Chapter 1, Setting Up the Environment with Using the Backup and Migrate Module. As we also take a look through the folders we can see that toward the bottom we actually have a copy of the Mockup, and if I expand this, this is the full static rendition of the site that we will be using to convert to Drupal 7 Custom Themes.
Within this folder we have static HTML as well as the assets, and even the Photoshop comps. This will give you a more realistic representation of what you actually may be working with if a designer is handing off the files to you. Finally we actually have the completed theme and in this folder you'll actually see the database snapshot and a zip file containing the actual site's folder. Now that we've explored the exercise files, database snapshots, design mockup and completed theme, one thing to know, if you are not a premium subscriber you will not have access to these files, but you can still follow along using your own assets and the readme files provided in each chapter.
Let's move on to previewing the completed project we will be designing in Drupal 7: Creating and Editing Custom Themes.
