Video: Embedding YouTube videos and other media

One of the greatest things that's happened on the web in the last ten years is the growth of the mashup, where information from two or more sites combines to make something that's bigger than the sum of all of them. The result of this movement has been a proliferation of sites that provide information in the format that's ready for you to use on your web site. YouTube videos and Google maps are pretty good examples of that. This video will show you how to add YouTube videos in a very simple way, and then Google maps and other information in a slightly more complex way. But don't worry; it is easy once you get the hang of it.

Embedding YouTube videos and other media

One of the greatest things that's happened on the web in the last ten years is the growth of the mashup, where information from two or more sites combines to make something that's bigger than the sum of all of them. The result of this movement has been a proliferation of sites that provide information in the format that's ready for you to use on your web site. YouTube videos and Google maps are pretty good examples of that. This video will show you how to add YouTube videos in a very simple way, and then Google maps and other information in a slightly more complex way. But don't worry; it is easy once you get the hang of it.

First, we'll go for the easy one--that is, adding YouTube videos. To get started, click Add content and Basic page. I'm going to call this "Explore California video podcast #1." In the Body area, click Add media, and then go up to the top. Now you've seen this window before when we added some media that was already on your own computer. But there is this other link, Embed image/video. Click that and then paste the URL for the video that you want to add.

Now, I've already chosen one here in YouTube. So I'll copy that, bring it back here, and paste it into my site, and click Submit. Scroll to the bottom and click Save. That's it. It's now part of your site, and you can watch it just as if you're watching it on YouTube. (Music playing.) Like so! All right, so that was the easy way to get YouTube videos into your site. Now for the Google maps. Once again, we'll go up to Add content and add a basic page.

This one I'll call "Golden Gate Bridge." Now, I've chosen this map already on Google maps, and I think I'll make this a little bit fancier by actually showing the street view of what it looks like as you go across the bridge. That looks pretty good. Yeah, there we go. To get that map, you click Link and then this Paste HTML to embed in web site. Click it and copy it and then go back to your site. Now you might think that you'd able to just paste it in here, and it would show that.

However, it won't actually work, and I'll show you why a couple of times. Go down and save and what you actually get is a lot of code. The reason for that, as you'll see when I click Edit, is that Drupal Gardens was accepting you to enter WYSIWYG code, so it takes everything that you put in, and it says okay, I'm going to split this out maybe with a little bit bold styling, and italic styling, but basically, it's going to spit everything back out. What you have to do instead is go to HTML and then paste it in there. Now, you might think that this would work if we just paste it in in HTML, but actually it doesn't.

The reason is we have this Safe HTML filter up here. If we leave it on that, Drupal Gardens takes it and says okay, I don't think that I want all of these tags to be allowed on the site. What you have to do instead is go to Full HTML and paste it in, then scroll to the bottom, and click Save. Now, we see the map exactly as we had it before. So we made it work, but there is a bit of a problem with that. The Full HTML text format, which lets people insert whatever HTML they like, presents a big problem.

The thing is that since they can add any tags they want, they might add some damaging tags if they have access to edit that node. I talk more about this problem in the video later on in this course about best practices for online clubs. So please do watch that video before you start allowing your sites' members to embed stuff in this way or use the Full HTML text format in any way. So we were able to get Google maps and YouTube videos in, but I want to mention that this technique doesn't end there. When I was making this video, I did a Google search for "online embeddable games" and was just amazed at the variety out there.

In fact, you could create a site that does nothing but collect your favorite games and have a sort of personal time-waster site. But you know, I think embeddable content like this works best with a light touch. A Google map here, a video there-- these enhance your content without overwhelming your visitors.
