Drupal 6: Creating and Editing Custom Themes

Drupal 6: Creating and Editing Custom Themes

with Chris Charlton

Drupal is widely recognized as a powerful back-end system for web sites, but Drupal 6: Creating and Editing Custom Themes shows how the application can also be used to manage the look and feel of a web site. Web architect Chris Charlton introduces the core themes that ship with Drupal. He shows how to install and administer new themes, change color schemes, and add sub-themes to existing themes. He also demonstrates how to build a custom theme from scratch; integrate HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; and apply themes to specific nodes and blocks. Exercise files are included with this course.
Topics include:
  • Setting themes and theme permissions
  • Using the Color Module to change color schemes
  • Building sub-themes
  • Adding HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to themes
  • Understanding templates
  • Applying themes to pages, nodes, and blocks

Chris Charlton

Chris Charlton is a Drupal and ActionScript guru who is always caught up with the latest web trends, including Flex, AIR, Flash, and web standards like CSS and XML. He writes articles for DMXzone.com, the largest Dreamweaver/Flash community; produces the Adobe AIR column for Flash & Flex Developer's Magazine; and produced WebDevDesign. Chris still manages to organize the Drupal and AIR user groups in Los Angeles.

Chris tried out many different lines of software before he adopted Drupal. He then went on to develop the first Dreamweaver plug-in for Drupal programmers. Chris co-wrote Advanced Flex Application Development: Building Rich Media X, the first printed book to cover connecting Drupal back ends to Flex/ActionScript front ends, which takes Drupal into the rich internet application realm. If Chris isn't writing or doing community events, he's usually teaching people how to produce current- and next-generation web properties.
