Video: Using the exercise files

The exercise files for this course contains two main folders. The first one is the final project folder. These are the final files that we're going to be creating throughout this particular course, adding on to the previous course of creating an interactive marquee. This contains the autoplay and all of the script modifications. There's also a folder called Previous Final Files. The files you create in the previous course are copied here as well. So if you don't want to take the first course and you just want to start in with the autopsy, you can start from these files. In addition, you can also start from your current files, if you've done some modifications on the marquee customized to your own web site implementation.

This course, which builds on the foundations of Create an Interactive Homepage Marquee with jQuery and Dreamweaver, enhances the marquee with an auto-play feature that automatically advances through the slide images when the page is loaded. Working in a Dreamweaver environment, Chris Converse shows how to add auto play using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, plus the implementation of hover states in jQuery. This course also covers adding play/pause functionality, as well as an interaction timeout, which will restart the marquee after a specified period of idle time.

Topics include:
  • Previewing a project across browsers and devices
  • Updating CSS and HTML in Dreamweaver
  • Adding debugging code
  • Declaring variables in JavaScript
  • Using setInterval
  • Stopping auto play during user interaction
Subjects:
Web Web Design Projects

In either case we're going to be starting from the basic principles of the earlier course and adding in all of this custom functionality we talked about in the intro video. So with that let's get started with the next movie.

Q: This course was updated in April, 2013. What changed?
A: Since the release of this course, Chrome conflicts with jQuery 1.6, and browsers run the autoplay when the windows is not in focus. To remedy these issues, the author has added a movie to Chapter 5 that will show you how to:
- Update the version of jQuery
- Detect the focus state of a web window
- Create a compound conditional JavaScript statement
