In the previous chapter on templates and libraries, we saw how templates and libraries can make your life a lot easier by automating a lot of repetitive tasks. So in this chapter on automation, I want to show you a couple of other things you can do to make repetitive and boring tasks go a lot quicker in {italic}Dreamweaver. {plain}Now I've already defined the 17_automation file as my new site. So if you have access to the exercise files, you can go ahead and do the same. I'm going to open up the file contactus.html, which is just a version of the form that we've been working on prior to this.

Using the History panel

In the previous chapter on templates and libraries, we saw how templates and libraries can make your life a lot easier by automating a lot of repetitive tasks. So in this chapter on automation, I want to show you a couple of other things you can do to make repetitive and boring tasks go a lot quicker in {italic}Dreamweaver. {plain}Now I've already defined the 17_automation file as my new site. So if you have access to the exercise files, you can go ahead and do the same. I'm going to open up the file contactus.html, which is just a version of the form that we've been working on prior to this.

And the first thing I want to look at is the History panel. You can get that by going to the Window menu, and choosing History, which pops up the History panel here. It's currently blank because I haven't done anything in here. Basically what the History panel does, is that it displays the last 50 steps by default, you have performed since you created or opened a file. It gives you a nice visual overview of the different steps that you've completed, and when you have steps in here, there will be a slider on the left hand side that you can use to quickly undo and redo those steps. Let me so you what I mean.

I'm going to make a couple changes to this document. I'm going to click inside the Name cell. And in the Property inspector, let's change the background color to #E3E5DC. There's the color change. Over here, notice that in History it says, "Set Bg Color," and it tells me exactly what color I changed it to. Let's make the cell a Header cell. Just click Header. Notice that step has been added to History. Let's do something like right-align this cell. That step has also been added to my History panel now.

Notice this slider on the left hand side that lets me drag up and down to each one of these steps. As I drag back and forth, this is the equivalent of hitting Command or Ctrl-Z on my keyboard to undo, but it's just much faster. Notice when I go all the way back to the top, there's no asterisk next to the name telling me anything has changed. But as soon as I drag down, that asterisk appears. Another thing I can use the History panel for is to redo these multiple steps. Now you may be familiar with the Redo command that's available under Undo. Most people aren't as familiar with Redo as they are with Undo. But you can often use Redo if, say, you made some text bold and then you select some other text, and then choose Redo, that text will become bold as well. But the advantage of using the History panel is that we can apply multiple steps, and redo them all. So if, for instance, if I wanted to change the Email Address cell to look like the Name cell up here, all I need to do is click in there, select the tag to get that cell, and then I come over here and select the steps that I want to redo. I'm going to select the first one, hold shown Shift, select the last one to select them all and then click Replay down here. Notice just like that, it has reformatted that cell and played all of the steps. Notice down here it says, "Replay Steps." So you can see Replay could be a huge timesaver. It saves you from the hassle of repeating multiple steps over and over again. You can also choose to repeat just certain steps. For instance, if I drag back up to this last step here, and I only want to change the Bg Color and the Text Alignment, I'm going to hold down Command on the Mac, or Ctrl on the PC, to select just those two items, hit Replay. And you can see it did everything, but it didn't turn it into a header, which is why it's not bold. So that's just one thing you can do with the History panel.

You can also copy and paste your steps. So for instance, if I select these steps again, notice we have this Copy button down here. By clicking on that, I can then come in here, click on the cell, select the whole cell and choose Paste. That actually pastes my steps in there. Just like so. Now the History panel can't copy and paste or repeat every single thing you do in {italic}Dreamweaver,{plain} but for basic formatting options it usually can. So once you've formatted a certain bit of text, or a table cell, open up your History panel and see if you're able to copy and paste the steps in, because it can be a big time saver. Now as I mentioned, the History panel saves up to 50 steps at a time. Even if I save this file, notice that the History panel doesn't clear away.

Now if I were to close this page and reopen it, then the History panel would be empty. If you start to notice {italic}Dreamweaver{plain} acting a little bit sluggish, it's possibly because the History panel is loading up the RAM a little too much. In which case, you can come up to the panel Options menu, and choose to clear your history out, which would empty the entire History panel. I'm not going to do that quite yet because I want to continue using these steps in the next movie.
