Video: Creating the HTML containers for the panels

Now, for the panel containers, let's come up here and split the div open a little bit that's got the class of panel container. Let's tab in, and let's add another div inside of here. We're going to give this a class of panels, plural. We're going to end that element. Let's split that open. And inside of here we're going to put each individual panel. We'll start with another div inside of the class of panels. We're going to give this a class of panel, singular.

A tabbed panel interface is a classic feature to incorporate in your website design, but they're usually static elements. This course shows how to build a dynamic sliding tabbed panel from scratch using a combination of HTML, CSS, jQuery, and the tools in Dreamweaver. Author Chris Converse leads you through the process from start to finish, from building the containers to styling the text, tab, and panels, and adding click events to make the tabs interactive. He also shows how to incorporate progressive enhancement techniques, so visitors who don't have JavaScript, for example, can still access the content.

Topics include:
  • Creating the main panel and tab containers
  • Adding content to the containers
  • Adding CSS styles to the text and tabs
  • Adding the jQuery $(document).ready() function
  • Assigning click events to the tabs
  • Setting an autostart on page load
  • Creating custom graphics for the panels
  • Assigning custom classes to the HTML elements
  • Reassigning CSS rules with JavaScript

Creating the HTML containers for the panels

Now, for the panel containers, let's come up here and split the div open a little bit that's got the class of panel container. Let's tab in, and let's add another div inside of here. We're going to give this a class of panels, plural. We're going to end that element. Let's split that open. And inside of here we're going to put each individual panel. We'll start with another div inside of the class of panels. We're going to give this a class of panel, singular.

Let's end that div tag. Let's open up one individual panel, and then inside of here we're going to put one more div. We're going to give this a class of panel_content and end that div. So now this constitutes one panel. Let's copy this to the clipboard, let's hit a return, and let's paste it two more times. So now inside of our panel container we have one div called panels and then inside of there we have three individual divs, each one classed with panel, and then inside of each one of those we have a div with panel content.

So now we have all of the HTML containers that we need inside of panel container for all of the individual panels. Next, we can start adding in some of the content for the individual panels.
