Getting answers to font questions

The web is not only the source of our fonts nowadays, it's also where we can get the answers to our font-related questions. So let's take a look at some great resources for information about fonts and typefaces. With all the current interest in typography, there are many web sites devoted to the subject. But a couple stand out. The first one here is typedia.com. This site is basically a user-editable online encyclopedia of type. The creators of Typedia describe it as a mix between IMDB and Wikipedia, but exclusively for type.

Its mission is to collect and classify typefaces, and to educate people about them. So I can search for detailed information on specific fonts, foundries, and designers if I want. I can click Explore to browse these same topics. With an account, I can bits of my own knowledge and in the Learn section, I can read up on the anatomy of a type face, or I can check out different type classifications and more. In the forum, I can post questions and get answers. Right here in the Upper Case forum, that's the one about type, and I can also check out their blog. Another great resouce for font and typeface information is typophile.com.

Here you can find a devoted community of people who are passionate about type and willing to share what they know. In the forums, you can learn typefaces, designers, and foundries. And, in the Fond ID section, you can get help identifying a specific typeface. And there's a Typowiki here, on all kinds of type related topics and more. Sites like Typophile and Typedia are great, in part, because they rely on the passion people have for type. Just remember when you use these sites and try to get answers to your questions, to be polite and to be patient.

Folks are volunteering their time and expertise, and it might take a while to get the answers to your questions.
