Creating typographic contrast with size

In typographic design, simply put, size matters. For impact, drama, and display, bigger is better. Bigger gets more attention. I'm going to show you some examples of using type size to maximize impact. We'll start out huge. If you are designing signage which needs to be visible from a great distance and under different lighting and changing weather conditions, then of course, size really matters. If you need to read something from literally a football field away, yes, type size is critical. Most of your projects will be on a smaller scale. But type size matters just as much, even on a mobile device. When thinking about the right size and the right weight, consider the surrounding elements. Here, the headline gets plenty of attention, but does not overpower the beautiful image. On the next screen of this story, notice how the text size balances under the subhead.
