Refining your verbal communication

For your great work to see the light of day, your voice needs to be clear and compelling. By minimizing your nervousness, you free your voice to become rich and expressive. Most communication is not what we say, but how we say it and the body language that we use. An audience determines three important things using only the sound of your voice, your accessibility, your credibility, and your trustworthiness. The richness of your voice also conveys authority about your subject matter, and your message. It makes people take notice. When we're nervous, we use filler words such as like, and you know. The pros replace all the filler words with what they call power pauses. These slow us down and strategically mimic the listening part of conversation. Pauses provide an opportunity for the audience to observe and process what the presenter is saying. They can be used strategically to create anticipation.
