In ColdFusion 9 New Features, author and developer Dan Short has gathered together the important updates and improvements in this dynamic web application. Dan showcases the new ColdFusion Builder application throughout the course, using it to work through the new language and CFScript enhancements in this release. He shows how to use the new Server Manager to compare servers and create server groups, as well as monitor server health through notifications. He also explains the new integration with Office applications, building Excel, Word, and even PowerPoint files on the fly from ColdFusion. Finally, he covers the important new Object Relational Mapping feature and how to use the built-in Flash Player. Exercise files accompany this course.
So, with the cfmessagebox tag, we can specify three different types. We have prompt, confirm and alert. Now, each of these do slightly different things. The prompt actually prompts the user for some input, which we can then collect and use later on. The confirm asks a simple yes or no question and the alert just gives the user some information and doesn't require any input or choice from them. On the prompt type message box, I can write a message to tell them exactly what kind of information I'd like to collect and then I can specify a label for the OK and Cancel buttons.
For my other two types, they would just simply tell me which button I clicked. By default when you add a message box to a page, it's hidden. In order to show your message box, you can call ColdFusion.MessageBox.show and you provide the ID for the box that you want to be displayed. So, I have three buttons here. One shows the prompt, one shows our confirm, and one shows the alert. So, let's open this file in the browser and take a look. So, we will go to localhost: 8500, Chapter8, messagebox.cfm.
Or I can click the X or press Escape. If I press Escape, it says that I clicked No. There is far more you can do to format your message boxes, including specifying custom styles, titles and icons. The new cfmessagebox tag gives you a slick new way to communicate with and gather information from your users.
