In this lesson, we'll be looking at features of the Classic workspace that we will be using frequently for the duration of this course. We'll be using the e-mail_assessment file that we opened in Chapter 1, and we'll be using it for the rest of the chapter. We'll begin by looking at the Filmstrip panel over on the left. We use the Filmstrip panel to navigate to pages within our projects. You can tell which page you're looking at because it will be highlighted in the Filmstrip panel. You can see that we're on page number 1, because page number 1 has the dark outline. Let's go to page number 3 by choosing it in the Filmstrip panel.

Using the Classic workspace

In this lesson, we'll be looking at features of the Classic workspace that we will be using frequently for the duration of this course. We'll be using the e-mail_assessment file that we opened in Chapter 1, and we'll be using it for the rest of the chapter. We'll begin by looking at the Filmstrip panel over on the left. We use the Filmstrip panel to navigate to pages within our projects. You can tell which page you're looking at because it will be highlighted in the Filmstrip panel. You can see that we're on page number 1, because page number 1 has the dark outline. Let's go to page number 3 by choosing it in the Filmstrip panel.

You can see now that page 3 is highlighted. Also at the top of the screen, you can see that our page number has changed to 3 of 9. Let's go to page 5 by changing the number 3 to 5. Simply click in the text area, delete the 3, and type a 5. You can see it that automatically Captivate will go right to that page if it's available. Let's go back to page number 1. Scroll up in the filmstrip and then click on page number 1. You'll use the filmstrip all the time when you're using Captivate.

Let's go take a look at the Timeline. The Timeline is along the bottom of the screen, and it shows us all of the elements that are on the stage. It also shows us where they exist in time, in addition to how they're stacked on the stage. Currently, on page number 1, we have three elements that we can see. First, there is a click box, and if you click right here, you can see it's selected on the stage. You'll use the Timeline to select objects that are hidden behind other objects. The next item down is our slide and then underneath that is an audio track.

You'll notice that the audio track has a little fuzziness to it. That fuzziness is in fact the audio waveform. Later on when we're adjusting timing, we'll be using that audio waveform to guide us when replacing objects in time. You'll notice also that the Timeline has time across the top, which makes sense. It's the Timeline panel. We can adjust the scale of that Timeline by dragging this slider on the bottom. Click and drag the slider to the left. As you drag it to the left, you'll notice that the time increments get closer together. Drag it back to the right.

Now they're getting further apart. You can also see the total duration of your slide, indicated to the left of that scale slider. We can scroll our view of the Timeline to the left and to the right by dragging this thumb here. Let's take a look at the Library panel. In the Classic workspace, it sits behind the properties panel, so to see it we need to Click on its name, to the right of Properties. The Library allows us to see all of the contents inside of our project.

For instance, if I open up the Audio folder, you can see that we have a number of elements that have already been recorded and are inside of our project now. If I look in my Backgrounds folder, you can see that there are a number of backgrounds that are also in use. You can access all of the elements of your project from the Library panel. The Library panel allows you to do more than just see your content: you can drag content from the library onto your stage; you can edit these library elements directly from here; and you can organize them and import contents to the library without getting it onto the stage.

We'll be using these panels extensively during the rest of the course, and if they happen to disappear, you can always get them back by going to the Classic workspace.

Q: I am having some problems with Captivate reviewer permissions and was directed to the following solution of James' blog, but I'm having trouble implementing it. Is there a simpler solution or has Adobe released a patch?

In order to execute the step entitled "Assign write permission to owners and groups", you need to enable the root user. In addition, you need to add the "sudo" command before the following steps in this section:

sudo chmod -R o+w Adobe\ Captivate\ Reviewer\ 2.0.app
and
sudo chmod -R g+w Adobe\ Captivate\ Reviewer\ 2.0.app

You can disable the root user when you're done with updating permissions.
A: Unfortunately, there is no patch. This is not an Adobe issue, but rather an issue with the way that Apple allows UNIX permissions within its file systems. For most cases, this is a good thing, but for this one case, it backfires. Just so you're aware, the issue persists in Captivate 5.5 as well.
