Creating a master page

From: Captivate 5 Essential Training

Video: Creating a master page

In this lesson, we're going to create some master slides for this project. A master slide is a way for you to create a background for your slides that you can then apply to one or more slides within your project. You can have more than one master slide. This makes it possible for you to have different looks and feels for your slides during the course of the presentation. If you're a PowerPoint user, then this is going to sound very familiar to you, and it's also going to feel very familiar to you as we go along. To design the master slide, we need to enter Master Slide view.

Creating a master page

In this lesson, we're going to create some master slides for this project. A master slide is a way for you to create a background for your slides that you can then apply to one or more slides within your project. You can have more than one master slide. This makes it possible for you to have different looks and feels for your slides during the course of the presentation. If you're a PowerPoint user, then this is going to sound very familiar to you, and it's also going to feel very familiar to you as we go along. To design the master slide, we need to enter Master Slide view.

We can do that by clicking on the Master Slide tab that's next to the Timeline. You can see it here. And now we're in the Master Slide view. You see that we got a notice that said now you're in the Master Slide view. The master slide itself is blank, because we haven't put any content onto it. I'd like to insert an image onto this master slide. From the Insert menu, choose Image. We've provided a number of images in an Images folder. This Images folder is in your Project folder, in Chapter 03, in your Exercise Files folder.

Choose Background 1.png and then click Open. This image has now been deposited onto the master slide. Take a look up in the Filmstrip. You can see that page 1 also has this view because page 1 is using the first master slide. We can create another master slide by right-clicking or Ctrl+Clicking on master slide number 1, and then choosing Insert and Master Slide. Let's insert a different image on top of this one.

Choose Insert > Image and then choose Background 2. Now, choose Open. Look up in the Filmstrip. You can see that page 1 didn't change this time, and that's because page 1 is using the first master slide, not the second. Let's go back to master slide number 1. Click it in the Master Slide panel. Up in the Properties panel, you'll see that Label is blank. Let's call this master slide "Corporate Background," and then hit Return or Enter.

You can see in the Master Slide panel it now shows the name Corporate Background. We can name the second one as well. We'll call this one "Details Background" and then hit Return. Great! Now, we've got two master slides that we've built. Let's go back to Filmstrip view by clicking on page 1 in the Filmstrip. You can see that we've now switched to Filmstrip view again. I'd like to insert another slide into the project. I can right-click or Ctrl+Click on page 1 and then choose Insert > New Slide.

You'll see that Captivate has added a new slide, and that it's using the Corporate Background master. We can change which master by looking over in the General area of the Properties panel. Select page2, and then over in the General area, choose Master Slide > 2 (Details Background). Now, you can see that that has changed. Look again between slide 1 and slide 2. This is using the Corporate Background; this is using the Details Background.

Now, let's save our file, but we're going to give it a new name. So to do that, we need to choose File > Save As. Under the File menu choose Save As, and then after Chapter 03, insert _A. As we go along, we'll be incrementing the names with A, B, C, and so on, throughout the chapters. Once you've made the change, click Save.
