Getting StartedWelcome| 00:01 |
(MUSIC).
Hello.
| | 00:05 |
I'm Garrick Chow, and welcome to how to
use lynda.com.
| | 00:07 |
In this series of videos, we'll look at
how to make your way around our website so
| | 00:10 |
you can get the most out of your
subscription to our library.
| | 00:13 |
Or even if you're not currently a member
of our site, you can still watch this
| | 00:16 |
course in its entirety completely for
free.
| | 00:19 |
And you'll be able to see what a
subscription to our site has to offer.
| | 00:22 |
We'll start with a look at the navigation
system, and the many options you'll have
| | 00:25 |
for finding the topics and courses that
interest you.
| | 00:28 |
And we'll see how to filter down the list
of relevant courses to find exactly the
| | 00:31 |
information you need.
You'll also learn the ins and outs of our
| | 00:34 |
(MUSIC) custom video player and how to
control movie play back options like
| | 00:37 |
closed captioning, the speed of playback,
and the size of the video on your screen.
| | 00:42 |
I'll give you detailed descriptions of our
current types of courses so you'll
| | 00:45 |
understand the difference between an
Essential training course and a Creative
| | 00:48 |
Spark documentary.
I will also talk about troubleshooting
| | 00:51 |
options and how to get answers to your
questions about our site or our courses.
| | 00:56 |
We'll be covering all of these topics, and
exploring plenty of other areas of our
| | 00:59 |
website in,How to use lynda.com.

| Choosing the membership plan that meets your needs| 00:01 |
At lynda.com we offer four different
subscription types for individual members.
| | 00:05 |
All four types give you complete and
unlimited access to our entire library.
| | 00:08 |
Our most basic membership is a Monthly
Subscription.
| | 00:13 |
For $25 per month you get access to our
entire library and no long term commitments.
| | 00:17 |
So if you want to only sign up for a month
or two so you can learn a few things this
| | 00:19 |
is the most cost effective plan.
If you think you'll be with us at least a
| | 00:23 |
year, we offer an annual subscription for
$250, which is like getting two months of
| | 00:27 |
access for free.
Now we also have premium versions of our
| | 00:31 |
monthly and annual memberships for $37.50
per month, or $375 per year.
| | 00:37 |
In addition to the complete and unlimited
access to all of our training courses that
| | 00:40 |
you get with the monthly and annual
subscriptions.
| | 00:42 |
Premium membership also gives you the
ability to download and use the exercise
| | 00:45 |
files from our courses.
So you can follow along performing the
| | 00:49 |
exact same actions and tasks as you see
our instructors perform.
| | 00:52 |
If you're more of a hands-on learner, but
have limited time consider purchasing a
| | 00:55 |
monthly premium subscription.
If you're able to commit to an entire
| | 00:59 |
year, the annual premium subscription is
your best choice for the value.
| | 01:03 |
Saving you $75 dollars over the cost of
the monthly premium service.
| | 01:06 |
And again, whichever membership level you
choose, you always have unlimited access
| | 01:09 |
to our entire library.
So you can watch any courses or videos
| | 01:12 |
anytime you like.

1. Browsing the Online Training Library®Navigating the site| 00:01 |
In this chapter, we'll look at the many
ways in which you can search for and find
| | 00:03 |
the content and courses you're looking
for.
| | 00:06 |
Let's begin with a brief overview of our
navigation system.
| | 00:08 |
And the subsequent movies in this chapter
we'll go into the specifics.
| | 00:11 |
Across the top of nearly every page in our
site, you'll find the navigation bar,
| | 00:14 |
which contains the primary menus you'll
use to find training courses.
| | 00:18 |
You can browse our library based on
subject, software or author.
| | 00:23 |
The navigation bar is also where you'll
find the search bar.
| | 00:26 |
And that let's you search our site for
particular words or phrases.
| | 00:29 |
Again we'll cover these navigation bar
items individually in upcoming movies.
| | 00:32 |
For now let's scroll down to the bottom of
the page and this is where you'll find the
| | 00:36 |
fat footer and like the navigation bar,
the fat footer appears on every page of
| | 00:40 |
our site.
The top area of the fat footer contains
| | 00:45 |
links to non course related sections of
our site.
| | 00:48 |
Like news, information about various
products and subscription plans, and
| | 00:52 |
contact information.
But this is also where you can browse our
| | 00:55 |
entire library's contents by these tabs.
Which you can see, offer more granular
| | 00:59 |
subcategories organized by subject,
software.
| | 01:03 |
And our most viewed courses in each
subject.
| | 01:06 |
You can even view a list containing every
single course by clicking this link here,
| | 01:09 |
which currently tells me there are 1,871
courses in all in the library.
| | 01:15 |
This list is sorted with the most recently
released courses at the top of the list,
| | 01:19 |
though you can easily resort that list
either using the Sort menu here or by
| | 01:22 |
filtering the list using the categories on
the left side of the screen.
| | 01:28 |
So for example if I wanted to see all the
courses listed alphabetically I could
| | 01:31 |
select course title a to z and I could
then pair the list down by selecting
| | 01:34 |
filter terms here on the left.
For example photography and I could choose
| | 01:41 |
the Beginners Skill Level and that pairs
the list down to 109 courses.
| | 01:50 |
You can remove the filters by clicking
their names.
| | 01:54 |
In the following movies we'll look at
other ways to locate the information and
| | 01:57 |
movies you need.
Let's return that to the lynda.com
| | 02:00 |
homepage which you can always do by
clicking the log in the navigation bar.
| | 02:03 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Browsing by subject| 00:01 |
Let's continue looking at how to browse
the Online Training Library with the
| | 00:03 |
Navigation Bar.
Let's say you're interested in seeing what
| | 00:05 |
kind of courses we have related to
business.
| | 00:08 |
Because that's not a software-specific
topic, the Subject menu is probably a good
| | 00:11 |
place to start.
So, I roll over Subject, and here I'll
| | 00:13 |
find Business.
The number next to it tells me there are
| | 00:17 |
currently 383 courses related to business
in our library.
| | 00:20 |
So, I'll click to select that subject.
At the top of this page, I find two tabs,
| | 00:27 |
editor's picks where you can browse
through courses in this topic area that
| | 00:30 |
you might find useful or interesting.
And most popular courses, where you can
| | 00:34 |
scroll through and browse the courses that
other members have viewed the most frequently.
| | 00:39 |
Depending on what subject you've selected,
you may see additional tabs here as well.
| | 00:45 |
For example, if I go to the Photography
subject, I'll see a tab here for
| | 00:48 |
documentaries related to the subject.
Let's return to Business for now, though.
| | 00:56 |
Underneath this recommendation area.
I find the list of 383 courses that are
| | 01:01 |
related to business.
But 383 courses is a lot to browse through
| | 01:04 |
and most likely you'll have a specific
type of business course in mind that
| | 01:07 |
you're looking for.
So, you can always pair down your results
| | 01:11 |
using the filter terms you see here under
the sections on the left.
| | 01:17 |
We have the various topics up here on the
top.
| | 01:18 |
And we also have Skill level, Software,
Author, and More option.
| | 01:24 |
These filters appear in the order of the
number of options in each software.
| | 01:28 |
So, for example you can see there are 170
course related to Microsoft here under
| | 01:30 |
software, 41 courses related to Excel, and
so on.
| | 01:32 |
And with the exception of skill level,
each filter also has a Show More menu.
| | 01:40 |
And that allows to view additional
filters.
| | 01:48 |
So for example, under the topic list maybe
I'll select Home and Small Office.
| | 01:55 |
And now, I'm looking at just nine courses,
which is a much more manageable list of
| | 01:57 |
tutorials to browse through, so I can
figure out which one I want to watch.
| | 02:01 |
And you can continue to add filters to
pare down your list if necessary.
| | 02:05 |
Maybe I only want to see courses related
to Microsoft here under software.
| | 02:08 |
And now, I only see the three courses that
have to deal with Home and Small Office,
| | 02:12 |
and Microsoft.
If this list were still really long, I
| | 02:17 |
could continue filtering.
Notice your selected filters appear up here.
| | 02:20 |
You can remove filters by clicking them.
But once you've found a course that you'd
| | 02:25 |
like to watch, just click its title to be
taken directly to that course's page.
| | 02:33 |
And here, you can read more about the
course and then actually watch it.
| | 02:36 |
So, that's how to browse for courses by
subject.
| | 02:38 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Browsing by software or company| 00:01 |
When you're looking for courses covering
specific software products, use the
| | 00:03 |
Software menu found in the Navigation Bar.
Here, you'll find listings for both
| | 00:07 |
software companies as well as individual
software titles.
| | 00:10 |
For example, here under A, I can see both
Adobe, the software company, as well as
| | 00:14 |
Acrobat and Audition, which are both Adobe
products.
| | 00:18 |
Or, let's same I'm interested in learning
Pro Tools.
| | 00:21 |
Now, I already see Avid here.
Listed under A, and they're the company
| | 00:24 |
that publishes Pro Tools.
But I can also see there are nearly 40
| | 00:27 |
courses that cover Avid software.
Let's narrow it down by clicking P, and
| | 00:31 |
here I'll find Pro Tools.
And now, I see all the Pro Tools related courses.
| | 00:37 |
Again, you can browse through the
recommendation area, here at the top of
| | 00:39 |
the page, which in this case is displaying
the most popular courses related to Pro Tools.
| | 00:44 |
Or you can scroll down and view of the, in
this case, 25 courses related to Pro Tools
| | 00:48 |
in order of release date or by using the
Sort menu to reorder them.
| | 00:54 |
We also have the usual collection of
filters to the left.
| | 00:57 |
When browsing by software products, you'll
frequently see Version filters here.
| | 01:01 |
Maybe I'm mainly interested in Pro Tools
10 training, so I'll click 10 to filer my results.
| | 01:05 |
And that will show me only the tutorials
that use Pro Tools 10.
| | 01:09 |
And as we saw in a previous movie, I can
continue to click filters to pare down my list.
| | 01:14 |
For example, I'll click intermediate under
skill level to see just the Pro Tools
| | 01:17 |
courses that are aimed at people who
already have basic Pro Tools skills.
| | 01:22 |
And that's how to browse by the Software
menu in the Navigation Bar.
| | 01:25 |

| Browsing by author| 00:01 |
As you watch movies at lynda.com, you may
find that you really connect with certain
| | 00:03 |
authors and their teaching styles.
And you may like to sample other courses
| | 00:07 |
by the same instructor.
All you have to do is go to the Author
| | 00:10 |
menu in the Navigation bar, click the
first letter of the author's first name.
| | 00:14 |
And locate him or her in the list.
To the right of each name you'll see the
| | 00:18 |
number of courses that author has recorded
for us.
| | 00:21 |
Clicking the name takes you to that
author's landing page.
| | 00:23 |
Where you can read a brief biography, and
browse the list of this author's courses.
| | 00:29 |
The list can be sorted by the course's
release dates, which is the default
| | 00:32 |
sorting scheme, or alphabetically by
title.
| | 00:36 |
To see a complete list of all our authors,
go back to the author menu, and click all authors.
| | 00:41 |
And on this page, you can scroll through
to browse through our author list in
| | 00:44 |
alphabetical order by their first names.
Again, clicking a name will take you
| | 00:50 |
directly to that authors landing page.
| | 00:52 |

| Finding the latest releases| 00:01 |
As a member of lynda.com, you'll always
see our latest releases here on our
| | 00:04 |
homepage under new courses.
We release over two dozen courses each
| | 00:08 |
month so this list is updated frequently.
You can use the tabs at the top here to
| | 00:11 |
filter through the new releases by
subject.
| | 00:14 |
To make it easier to find the courses that
most interest you.
| | 00:19 |
Clicking a thumbnail plays the intro movie
or trailer for that course or title.
| | 00:22 |
(MUSIC) And clicking a course's name takes
you to that courses page, where you can
| | 00:28 |
watch the entire course or pick and choose
the movies you'd like to watch.
| | 00:38 |
We also offer the option of subscribing to
the latest releases RSS feed and I'll show
| | 00:41 |
you how to do that in the next movie.
| | 00:43 |

| Subscribing to the Latest Releases RSS feed| 00:01 |
Many websites these days offer news,
announcements, and other constantly
| | 00:04 |
changing information in the form of RSS
feeds and Lynda.com is no exception.
| | 00:10 |
In case you're not familiar with the term
RSS, it could stand for rich site summary
| | 00:13 |
or really simple syndication, depends on
who you ask.
| | 00:17 |
But the point of an RSS feed is that it
allows content providers to offer
| | 00:20 |
information in a form their users can
subscribe to.
| | 00:24 |
Subscribing to an RSS feed means you don't
have to remember to visit a website for
| | 00:27 |
updated information.
All you need is an RSS reader, sometimes
| | 00:31 |
called a news reader or a news aggregater.
And you'll automatically receive
| | 00:35 |
up-to-date information from any RSS feed
you subscribe to.
| | 00:38 |
For example, Lynda.com offers a latest
releases RSS feed, which keeps you updated
| | 00:41 |
on our newest titles and courses.
Here on our homepage, I'll find the RSS
| | 00:47 |
link button here and clicking it takes you
to our new releases RSS feed.
| | 00:51 |
The address here in the address bar is our
feed address and it's this address that
| | 00:54 |
you can copy and paste into which ever
news reader you prefer.
| | 00:58 |
There are many third party RSS reader
applications available for both Mac and
| | 01:01 |
Windows PCs.
But you can also subscribe to RSS feeds
| | 01:05 |
through any number of online services like
Netvibes.
| | 01:09 |
You can sign up for a free account at
netvibes.com.
| | 01:12 |
Then, all you have to do is start adding
subscriptions by adding the RSS feeds you
| | 01:15 |
want to subscribe to.
I'll go back to the Lynda.com feed, select
| | 01:20 |
the address, copy it, and I'll go back to
Netvibes.
| | 01:26 |
And in this case, I click Add Content.
I'll choose to add a feed.
| | 01:31 |
And here I can paste in that address.
I'll click Add Feed.
| | 01:38 |
The feed appears here.
I can select it.
| | 01:41 |
I can see a preview of what it will look
like here, and I'll click Add to My Page.
| | 01:48 |
And that's all there is to it.
The feed now appears on my page.
| | 01:51 |
Depending on the service you're using, you
may also be able to customize how the feed
| | 01:54 |
is displayed.
For example, here in net vibes, I see a
| | 01:57 |
standard text display of the feed, but I
can click on the Settings button and
| | 02:00 |
change the view to say the magazine
layout.
| | 02:07 |
And that now displays the feed to include
thumbnail images, and I can browse through
| | 02:10 |
the feed using the Next and Previous
buttons.
| | 02:15 |
If I'm interested in reading one of these
stories, I can click on it, and here I can
| | 02:20 |
read the entry.
I can also see the other stories in the
| | 02:23 |
feed here on the left.
And you can add more feeds as you like.
| | 02:30 |
For example, at Lynda.com we also have a
frequently updated blog at blog.lynda.com.
| | 02:37 |
So instead of having to visit the blog in
my web browser when I remember to do so,
| | 02:43 |
I'll just go to its RSS feed, copy the
address and then paste it into Netvibes.
| | 02:52 |
Again I'll go to Add Content, Add a Feed
is already selected, delete that and paste
| | 02:56 |
in the new address.
And I'll add that to my page.
| | 03:06 |
So, now I have two subscriptions.
So, you can see how convienent it can be,
| | 03:09 |
to have all your frequently visited pages
RSS feeds in one place.
| | 03:12 |
Rather than having to visit them
individually in your web browser.
| | 03:16 |
I can just come in here, click on any
article I want to read and then close it.
| | 03:21 |
Most RSS readers also keep track of the
new articles that you haven't yet read, so
| | 03:24 |
you can see at a glance, if new content
has been added to a feed.
| | 03:27 |
So if you haven't played around much with
RSS feeds and news readers, you really
| | 03:31 |
should give them a try.
Especially if you find yourself frequently
| | 03:35 |
visiting the same sites for the latest
information.
| | 03:38 |
If an RSS feed is available, you can
subscribe to it.
| | 03:40 |
And really cut down on your surfing around
time.
| | 03:42 |
And we hope you'll add the Lynda.com new
releases and blog feeds to your news reader.
| | 03:46 |

| Finding the most-viewed courses in the fat footer| 00:01 |
Sometimes if your not quite sure where to
start or what to learn next, you could try
| | 00:04 |
scrolling down to the fat footer area of
any page on our site and clicking the most
| | 00:07 |
viewed courses tab.
Often times this area can be a good
| | 00:11 |
barometer of not just what the most
popular software products are in a given
| | 00:14 |
field at that moment, but also what
aspects of the software or subject other
| | 00:17 |
people are most interested in.
For example, here under photography the
| | 00:22 |
top course right now is Photoshop CS6
Essential Training.
| | 00:25 |
And it's followed up by Photoshop CS61 on
1 fundamentals.
| | 00:29 |
Then two foundations of photography
courses, exposure and composition.
| | 00:32 |
And then a course on shooting with the
Cannon 5D mark 3.
| | 00:36 |
Now, maybe I'm feeling pretty comfortable
working with my photos in phototshop and
| | 00:38 |
I'm wondering where I can go from there.
And I can see that these two foundations
| | 00:42 |
of photography courses seem pretty
popular.
| | 00:44 |
Foundations of photography exposure, for
example, is a course that teaches you how
| | 00:47 |
to properly adjust your camera's exposure
settings and doesn't really get into
| | 00:50 |
software at all.
As someone who's interested in becoming a
| | 00:54 |
better photographer, this would probably
be a good choice for me to check out.
| | 00:58 |
And I might not have found this course as
easily simply by browsing through the
| | 01:01 |
photography section.
But because it's a popular course, it
| | 01:04 |
shows up as one of the top titles in this
category.
| | 01:07 |
Or, as another example, right now it looks
like Edge Animate Essential Training is
| | 01:10 |
the most viewed under the 3D and animation
content area.
| | 01:14 |
So, if I were interested in learning 3D
animation, this is probably a good
| | 01:16 |
indication that I should look into this
software and this course.
| | 01:20 |
Excel 2010 is most popular under business,
which seems to indicate that most people
| | 01:24 |
have migrated from the previous 2007
version of the software to the 2010 release.
| | 01:30 |
And under video, Premiere Pro CS6
Essential Training is more popular than,
| | 01:34 |
say, Aftereffects or Final Cut Pro.
So, the next time you're wondering what to
| | 01:40 |
do next, be sure to take a look through
the most viewed courses area here in the
| | 01:44 |
fat footer.
| | 01:47 |

| Finding content with the search feature| 00:01 |
If browsing with the Navigation bar isn't
helping you find the course or content
| | 00:04 |
you're looking for, trying using the
Search bar found at the top of each page
| | 00:07 |
or site.
The Search bar lets you search for
| | 00:10 |
specific words or phrases, and then
provides you with a list of results you
| | 00:12 |
can then browse through and pair down.
Begin by typing a search term in the
| | 00:17 |
Search bar, for example CSS.
Notice that after a moment some
| | 00:21 |
suggestions appear under the search field.
These are all individual courses and you
| | 00:25 |
can click any of these suggestions to go
directly to that course's landing page.
| | 00:29 |
Or if you don't see a course that looks
like what you're searching for, press
| | 00:32 |
Enter or Return or click Search here in
the Search bar.
| | 00:35 |
That will initiate your search for the
word or phrase you typed.
| | 00:38 |
Our search engine then looks through every
single course, movie, description and even
| | 00:42 |
closed caption transcripts of individual
movies to return a list of results
| | 00:45 |
matching your search term.
Search results are then listed by course
| | 00:50 |
and are sorted by the best match as you
can see with the courses filters selected
| | 00:52 |
here on the left.
Currently, I have 27 course matches for
| | 00:57 |
CSS and there are more than 1,000
individual videos that mention CSS.
| | 01:03 |
When sorting by videos, you can see which
movies in each course contain your search term.
| | 01:09 |
And you can further narrow down the list
of movies by clicking Filter Terms here
| | 01:11 |
under these headings.
We have Skill Level, Subject, Software,
| | 01:18 |
Version, Company, Author and More options.
Under each one of these headings, results
| | 01:24 |
are listed in order of the categories with
the most matches.
| | 01:29 |
So, for example, you can see that there
are 577 results under the Web Design
| | 01:33 |
category and 98 results under Web
Graphics.
| | 01:36 |
These filters can be especially useful
when searching for terms that might be
| | 01:39 |
used in multiple areas of interest.
So for example, I search for the term
| | 01:44 |
clipping mask.
Clipping masks can be used in photography,
| | 01:47 |
design, video editing, and so on.
Once I initiate my search, notice I have
| | 01:53 |
over 400 courses listed in my results.
If I'm only interested in clipping mask as
| | 01:58 |
they apply to video production, I can
click the video filter term here on the left.
| | 02:02 |
And maybe I really only want to know how
clipping masks are used in Final Cut Pro.
| | 02:11 |
And then, maybe I'm just using version 10.
So now I've narrowed down my results to
| | 02:17 |
just four courses.
I now have a much easier time finding the
| | 02:20 |
movies I'm looking for.
Now you might have noticed that in
| | 02:23 |
addition to showing results based on
courses and videos, there's also an entire
| | 02:26 |
site link.
Entire site is for searching for all the
| | 02:31 |
non course related pages at lynda.com.
So for example, you might see search
| | 02:35 |
results that appear in author bios, blog
entries, or a company newsletter.
| | 02:39 |
Depending on the information you're
looking for, you might find it in our
| | 02:42 |
blogger newsletter.
So be sure to checkout the entire Site tab
| | 02:44 |
when performing your search.
Lastly I want to point out that yes there
| | 02:48 |
are two separate search fields visible
when you are looking through your search results.
| | 02:52 |
You have the search field that's always in
the Navigation bar and this one here under
| | 02:56 |
the Search results tab.
The only difference between the two is
| | 02:59 |
that the one here under the Search results
tab contains the term you were searching for.
| | 03:03 |
And that can be useful if you've forgotten
the exact wording or phrase you initially
| | 03:05 |
searched for.
But in either case, to perform another
| | 03:08 |
search, just click in either one of those
search fields, type a word or phrase.
| | 03:12 |
And then click Search or press Enter on
your keyboard to perform your search.
| | 03:16 |

| Using the site map| 00:01 |
At the bottom of the fat footer on each
page, you'll find a link to our site map.
| | 00:04 |
If, for some reason, you're having trouble
finding information about our company or
| | 00:07 |
courses using the other navigation or
links on our site.
| | 00:10 |
Try visiting the site map.
The site map is organized into the
| | 00:14 |
sections of company, categories, and
courses.
| | 00:17 |
Under company you'll find links to pages
about lynda.com or various products and solutions.
| | 00:22 |
News and press releases as well as links
to contact us and our frequently asked questions.
| | 00:30 |
Under the category section is where you'll
find all of our courses divided into
| | 00:33 |
subject, software.
Software company, and author.
| | 00:41 |
This mimics the same functionality you'll
get from the navigation menu at the top of
| | 00:47 |
each page.
As well as the subjects and software tabs
| | 00:52 |
of the fat footer.
So, this is just another option for
| | 00:56 |
searching for courses.
And the courses section of the site map
| | 01:00 |
lists every course in our library
alphabetically.
| | 01:04 |
Just click a letter to jump to that
section.
| | 01:06 |
I do want to emphasize that this is
alphabetical by the course name and not by
| | 01:09 |
software name.
So, while many of our courses begin with
| | 01:12 |
the software product's name, don't click
on say letter D thinking you'll find all
| | 01:15 |
the Dreamweaver courses.
Most of them are here, but notice there
| | 01:19 |
are also courses like, Creating a first
Web Site with Dreamweaver CS6 here under C.
| | 01:24 |
If you want to search the sitemap for
course by software name go back to the
| | 01:29 |
categories tab of the sitemap and here
browse under software.

| Exploring the mobile site| 00:00 |
Watching lynda.com courses on your
computer has always been a great way to
| | 00:03 |
learn and master the software and digital
tools that are most important to you.
| | 00:08 |
Now the lynda.com mobile site lets you
access our entire library of courses
| | 00:11 |
wherever you go.
To access the mobile site just open a web
| | 00:15 |
browser in your device and point it at
m.lynda.com.
| | 00:19 |
Our mobile site works on iPhone or iPod
touch running IOS 3.2 or later.
| | 00:23 |
As well as Android OS2 or later and
Blackberry OS5.0 or later, and it works
| | 00:27 |
either over Wi-Fi or your cellular
provider's network.
| | 00:32 |
If you have an iPad, we recommend that you
use the regular www.lynda.com site because
| | 00:36 |
the mobile site is optimized for devices
with smaller screens.
| | 00:40 |
If you're a lynda.com member, click log in
on home screen to enter your user name and password.
| | 00:51 |
Once logged in, you'll be taken to the
home page where you'll see a list of the
| | 00:54 |
items you last viewed, the items in your
queue, your course history, as well as a
| | 00:58 |
list of our latest releases.
So for example, if you want to start
| | 01:02 |
watching a course you had previously been
watching, here on the home page, you can
| | 01:05 |
scroll back up to Last Viewed, to find the
movies you most recently viewed and pick
| | 01:08 |
up where you last left off.
You can always return to this page by
| | 01:13 |
tapping Home in the navigation bar.
The other items in the navigation bar
| | 01:18 |
allow you to browse our library by
subject, software and author.
| | 01:22 |
But, unlike our full site, these buttons
don't open drop down menus.
| | 01:25 |
Instead you'll be taken to a page where
you can browse these categories alphabetically.
| | 01:29 |
So for example, if you wanted to find some
training on photography, you would tap
| | 01:34 |
subject, then P, and then Photography, to
see all the photography related courses.
| | 01:41 |
When you find a course you'd like to
watch, tap its name to open its Course
| | 01:45 |
Details page.
Here, you can tap to read the course
| | 01:48 |
description and then browse through the
Table of Contents.
| | 01:53 |
Use the triangles next to each chapter's
name to collapse and expand that chapter.
| | 02:00 |
Or tap expand all, or collapse all, which
can make it easier to browse the contents
| | 02:04 |
of longer courses.
If you want to remind yourself to return
| | 02:10 |
to this course at a later time, tap the
add to queue button to add it to your queue.
| | 02:15 |
You can get to your queue at any time by
tapping your account name at the top of
| | 02:20 |
the screen, and then tapping queue.
Another way to find specific information
| | 02:26 |
is to use the search bar at the top of
each page of the mobile site.
| | 02:29 |
Tap in the field, type your search terms
and then tap search.
| | 02:36 |
In a few moments you'll see a list of
courses matching your search.
| | 02:41 |
You can use this menu to sort your results
by relevance, course name, learning level,
| | 02:46 |
duration or release date.
Tapping a course takes you directly to
| | 02:51 |
that courses details page.
You can also see your search results by
| | 02:55 |
movie by tapping on the movie tab, tapping
a movie plays that movie right away.
| | 02:59 |
>> So, in the last movie we looked at how
you can use CSS3 transitions to do nice
| | 03:05 |
animations as CSS properties are actually.
>> At the bottom of every page of the
| | 03:16 |
mobile site is the footer area where
you'll find links to other information or
| | 03:19 |
parts of the site you might want to visit
such as our About page, the Site Map, or
| | 03:22 |
the Subscribe page if you're not currently
a member and would like to sign up.
| | 03:27 |
Also in the footer area is the link to the
full site.
| | 03:33 |
Which takes you to the non mobile version
of Lynda.com so you could browse our
| | 03:36 |
website in the format and layout you see
in your desktop web browser.
| | 03:39 |
Although be aware that certain elements of
the full site might not function depending
| | 03:42 |
on the device or browser you're using.
And because of the smaller screen of your
| | 03:46 |
device, you'll most likely have to zoom in
to navigate the site as well.
| | 03:49 |
To return to the mobile version of the
site, just type in the address m.lynda.com
| | 03:53 |
again, or use the back button within your
browser.
| | 03:56 |
The mobile site has been optimized for
easy navigation on your devices screen.
| | 04:00 |
So if you're familiar with our full site,
you shouldn't have any trouble finding
| | 04:02 |
what you're looking for, but you will find
some key differences between the mobile
| | 04:05 |
and full versions of our site.
For example our mobile site does not
| | 04:09 |
currently support features such as
bookmarks or closed captioning.
| | 04:12 |
To access these features switch to the
full version of the site.
| | 04:17 |
We hope you enjoy having access to the
entire lynda.com library of courses from
| | 04:20 |
your mobile device.

2. Watching the TrainingNavigating a course details page| 00:01 |
Each course page in our library is
organized into a series of tabs, making it
| | 00:03 |
simple for you to quickly browse through
and find the information you're looking for.
| | 00:08 |
When you first arrive on a course's page,
the Table of Contents tab is opened by default.
| | 00:13 |
And to the left is the description of the
course so you can see what the course
| | 00:15 |
covers, who it's designed for, and other
relevant information such as the course's
| | 00:18 |
duration and release date.
Using the table of contents you can browse
| | 00:27 |
through the chapters and movies contained
in the course.
| | 00:29 |
If you're not a member of our library
you'll be able to sample a handful of free
| | 00:32 |
movies in each course.
The free movies will be listed in blue, if
| | 00:36 |
you are a member and currently logged in
you'll have access to all the movies.
| | 00:40 |
I'll go ahead and log in.
So to view a movie, simply click its name.
| | 00:50 |
This course teaches you how to effectively
hold two types of meetings.
| | 00:58 |
When you're done viewing the current
movie, close this window, and select
| | 01:01 |
another movie.
Clicking the arrows next to a chapter
| | 01:05 |
title alternates between showing and
hiding that chapter's contents.
| | 01:12 |
Some chapters are quite lengthy, and
temporarily collapsing their contents.
| | 01:17 |
Makes it easier to browse the chapter
titles and get a better overview of the
| | 01:20 |
course as a whole.
Use the collapse all and expand all
| | 01:26 |
buttons to collapse and expand all the
chapters at once.
| | 01:30 |
Be aware that clicking a chapter's name
however is a short cut for playing all the
| | 01:33 |
movies in that chapter continuously.
So make sure you're using the arrows to
| | 01:36 |
expand and collapse.
And click the chapter name only if you
| | 01:38 |
want to play the entire chapter.
Notice here the auto play chapters setting
| | 01:45 |
is set to on.
And this can be convenient if you intend
| | 01:47 |
on watching all the movies in a chapter,
and don't want to have to open and close
| | 01:49 |
each movie individually.
If exercise files for the course are
| | 01:55 |
available, you'll find them under the
exercise files tab.
| | 01:59 |
If the course doesn't use exercise files
you won't see this tab, but your a premium
| | 02:02 |
subscriber to our library the exercise
files tab is where you'll be able to
| | 02:05 |
download the images, video clips, filters,
and other sort of files the author uses in
| | 02:08 |
the course so you can work along with each
movie using the exact same assets you see
| | 02:11 |
on screen.
If your a monthly or annual level
| | 02:16 |
subscriber or if your not a subscriber at
all and are just browsing through our library.
| | 02:20 |
This is where you'll find information on
subscribing or updating your subscription
| | 02:23 |
to premium level, which will then allow
you to gain access to the exercise files.
| | 02:28 |
Exercise files are in a compressed zip
format for easy downloading, and clicking
| | 02:31 |
on the file will begin the download.
Next we have the transcript tab, in
| | 02:36 |
courses that have closed captioning
available you can view the text transcript
| | 02:39 |
of each movie simply by clicking on the
movies name.
| | 02:46 |
From here you can read through the content
of the movie, which can often give you a
| | 02:49 |
better idea of whether or not the movie
contains the information you'd like to learn.
| | 02:53 |
If you find what you're looking for note
the time code, and then click on any of
| | 02:56 |
the time codes to open that specific movie
and then fast forward or jump to the point
| | 02:59 |
you want to watch.
As in the table of contents tab you can
| | 03:05 |
use the collapse all and expand all
buttons to collapse and expand the list of
| | 03:08 |
chapters and movies.
If you've opened up multiple transcripts,
| | 03:13 |
clicking collapse all and then expand all
is a fast way to close them all and start
| | 03:18 |
with just a list of chapters and movies
together,.
| | 03:24 |
Under the transcript tab you can also
search the transcript for specific words
| | 03:27 |
or phrases.
This search this course field is identical
| | 03:30 |
to the one you find under the header here.
Just type a word or phrase and click Submit.
| | 03:37 |
For example, let's say in this course on
leading productive meetings, I want to
| | 03:39 |
learn more about the principal of time
management as it relates to meetings.
| | 03:43 |
I'll type time management, and click
Submit.
| | 03:48 |
And in just a couple seconds I receive a
list of all the movies within this course
| | 03:52 |
that contain the phrase I'm looking for.
With each movies name accompanied by a
| | 03:56 |
number indicating how many times that word
or phrase appears in that movie.
| | 04:02 |
Toggle open a movie to see your phrase in
context, and determine if that movie
| | 04:05 |
contains the information you're looking
for.
| | 04:07 |
Notice each instance of the phrase is
highlighted, being able to read the
| | 04:10 |
transcript is a great way to figure out
whether a movie is relevant to your
| | 04:13 |
interests before you take the time to open
and watch it.
| | 04:18 |
The next tab is the author tab.
Here, to find a profile of the course's
| | 04:22 |
author, and a list of all the titles he or
she has recorded for the library.
| | 04:26 |
The author tab is also the place to go if
you enjoy the teaching style of a
| | 04:28 |
particular author, and would like to watch
other courses about him or her.
| | 04:34 |
Next, we have the preferences tab, and
here you can choose which type of player
| | 04:36 |
you want to use to watch our videos.
Each option let's you watch all the movies
| | 04:40 |
from the course, but some players offer
additional playback features.
| | 04:44 |
You can find a chart showing the
differences between the players by
| | 04:47 |
following this link.
So, for example, you can see the flash
| | 04:50 |
player is the only one that allows you to
make the window movie as large as you want.
| | 04:55 |
All the players support closed captioning.
Quicktime Custom has playback speed
| | 04:59 |
controls, and Quicktime Standard doesn't
support bookmarks.
| | 05:04 |
Just pick your player, and click update.
And I'll click the back button in my
| | 05:08 |
browser to go back to the course page.
Also under preferences, you can turn
| | 05:13 |
closed captioning on or off.
Note that these two settings, video player
| | 05:17 |
and close captioning, apply to all the
couses and movies you watch on our site,
| | 05:20 |
and not just to the course you're
currently watching, so these are global settings.
| | 05:25 |
And lastly we have the Clear Viewed Icons
button.
| | 05:29 |
You've probably already noticed that as
you make your way through a course.
| | 05:35 |
An eye icon appears next to the movies
you've already watched, making it easy to
| | 05:38 |
see which movies you've already gotten
through and which movies you still need to watch.
| | 05:42 |
If you've completely finished a course and
want to watch it again using the icons to
| | 05:48 |
keep yourself organized, or if you just
find the icons distractions, simply visit
| | 05:53 |
the course preferences tab, click clear
viewed icons, and the icons will be removed.
| | 06:02 |
Note that clearing viewed icons doesn't
affect your movie history.
| | 06:05 |
Our system will still remember which
movies you've watched, and you can still
| | 06:08 |
access your entire list of movies you've
watched by going to My Courses and Course History.
| | 06:19 |
Lastly, we have the FAQs tab where you'll
find any frequently asked questions,
| | 06:22 |
errata or other useful information about
the course.
| | 06:26 |
Whether you see any information in this
area is going to vary from course to
| | 06:29 |
course, but we do frequently add answers
to common questions we receive about our courses.
| | 06:34 |
This particular example, we can see
information about what was changed in the
| | 06:37 |
last update to this course.
So there's an overview of the tabs you'll
| | 06:42 |
find on the course pages.
| | 06:43 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Downloading and using the exercise files| 00:01 |
If you have a monthly or annual premium
subscription to our library.
| | 00:04 |
You have access to the same example files
used by the instructors in the courses you watch.
| | 00:08 |
Allowing you to follow along doing exactly
what the instructor is doing with photos,
| | 00:12 |
videos, audio files, business documents,
and so on.
| | 00:15 |
The files are provided in the zip
compression format.
| | 00:18 |
To download the files associated with the
course you are watching, simply click the
| | 00:21 |
file link under the exercise files tab on
a course page.
| | 00:24 |
You can see my file is now downloading.
Now, if you are using Windows depending on
| | 00:30 |
your browser, you may be asked whether you
want to save or run the file you're downloading.
| | 00:34 |
If you do see that message, just click
Save to save the zip file to your computer.
| | 00:37 |
MacOSX has the ability to unpack zip
files, and most Windows PCs these days
| | 00:40 |
have pre-installed software for unpacking
zip files as well.
| | 00:44 |
Once the exercise files have been
downloaded to your computer, we recommend
| | 00:48 |
placing them on your desktop, if you
haven't done so already, for easy access.
| | 00:54 |
If you're a Windows user, your unpacking
utility application may automatically
| | 00:57 |
unpack the files for you.
If nothing happens right-click on the
| | 01:00 |
compressed file and choose extract all.
You can choose the location I leave mine
| | 01:06 |
on the desktop I'll click extract and here
are my exercise files.
| | 01:12 |
Similarly, if you're a Mac user, just
double click the compressed file to unpack it.
| | 01:21 |
Once the exercise files have been
expanded, you can delete the zip file or
| | 01:26 |
just keep it as a clean back up copy of
the files you are working on.
| | 01:33 |
The instructor of the course you're
watching will explain how to use the files
| | 01:35 |
you've downloaded.
| | 01:36 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Searching the video transcripts for a specific word or phrase| 00:01 |
As mentioned in an earlier movie one of
the tabs you'll find on most course
| | 00:03 |
details pages is the transcript tab.
All new courses at lynda.com have
| | 00:08 |
transcripts provided anywhere between a
few days to just a week or two after their
| | 00:11 |
release and we're constantly updating
older courses with transcripts as well.
| | 00:17 |
This allows us to not only provide closed
captioning for our members with hearing
| | 00:20 |
impairments, but transcripts also make it
possible for search engines to index our
| | 00:23 |
course content and for our members to find
and navigate relevant course information.
| | 00:29 |
If you see the CC icon, and the search
field is available in the course details
| | 00:32 |
page header area, you'll know the course
has transcripts available.
| | 00:37 |
And you can search transcripts by typing a
word or phrase into this field.
| | 00:40 |
This makes it easy to see if the course
you're browsing contains the information
| | 00:42 |
you're looking for.
For example, in this course on using eBay,
| | 00:46 |
I'd like to know if the author covers the
topic of sniping.
| | 00:49 |
Which is the act of swooping in at the
last few seconds of an auction to place a bid.
| | 00:54 |
So I'll type sniping and click submit.
And now I can see that two movies in this
| | 01:01 |
course contain that word, including a
movie that is in fact, about sniping.
| | 01:05 |
Clicking on a movie's title opens its
transcript and my search term is highlighted.
| | 01:13 |
Reading the transcript around the search
term can help me determine if this movie
| | 01:16 |
is relevant to what I'm looking for.
And in this case, it looks like sniping is
| | 01:19 |
only mentioned this one time.
And it's really only mentioned in passing.
| | 01:25 |
So I'll click collapse this transcript,
close it down again, and I'll check the
| | 01:30 |
other search result.
And clearly since this movie is called
| | 01:34 |
Sniping, this is a movie that has the
information I'm looking for.
| | 01:37 |
Just quickly glancing through the
transcript I can see that the author
| | 01:40 |
starts off with a definition of sniping,
how it's done, how you can find software
| | 01:43 |
to do the sniping for you automatically,
how some people object to sniping and say
| | 01:46 |
it's unfair, and so on.
Again, click any of the time codes to open
| | 01:51 |
the movie and start watching.
>> Auction sniping has been very popular
| | 01:55 |
since the first online auction appeared on
the internet.
| | 02:03 |
>> If you want to search for another term,
go back to the top of the page.
| | 02:06 |
While in the transcript tab you can use
either the search field in the header, or
| | 02:09 |
the one here under the transcript tab.
Click clear search results to empty the
| | 02:13 |
field and display all the other chapters
and movies below.
| | 02:18 |
When there's no search term in the search
field, you're free to pop open the
| | 02:20 |
transcript of any movie to scan through
and see if it's something you want to watch.
| | 02:26 |
And again, you can click the chapter names
to collapse and expand them.
| | 02:30 |
Or click collapse all which can give you a
better overview of the course as a whole
| | 02:34 |

| Choosing the right video player for your needs| 00:01 |
The movies you find in our library are all
presented in multiple formats, giving you
| | 00:04 |
the ability to choose the video player
type that best suits your needs.
| | 00:08 |
While signed into your account, go to my
account, site preferences, in here you can
| | 00:12 |
view and select the video player of your
choice.
| | 00:16 |
The choices are flash, QuickTime
Sstandard, QuickTime Custom are available
| | 00:19 |
on both the Mac and Windows operating
system.
| | 00:22 |
If you're on Windows, as I am here you'll
have the additional choice of Windows Media.
| | 00:27 |
Now your choice of player may be boil down
to simply wanting to select the player
| | 00:29 |
that's native to your operating system.
And that doesn't require you to install
| | 00:32 |
any additional plugins.
For instance if you're on Windows, you'll
| | 00:35 |
have to download and install the Adobe
Flash and QuickTime plugins from the
| | 00:38 |
respective sites.
In order to view videos in those formats.
| | 00:43 |
but if you choose Windows Media we'll be
able to play our videos without any
| | 00:46 |
additional plugins.
Similarly if you're on a Mac, you'll be
| | 00:49 |
able to use either QuickTime format right
away.
| | 00:51 |
But we'll need to download the Flash
plugin.
| | 00:53 |
These days though, it's probably unlikely
that you don't have the Flash plugin
| | 00:56 |
installed regardless of what platform
you're on.
| | 00:59 |
So you should also take a look at this
table.
| | 01:00 |
Notice each player type has certain
features unique to itself as well as
| | 01:03 |
features shared with some or all of the
other players.
| | 01:06 |
For example, all of the players support
closed captioning.
| | 01:09 |
QuickTime Standard is the only one that
doesn't support adding bookmarks from
| | 01:11 |
within the player window.
QuickTime Custom and Windows Media are the
| | 01:14 |
only two that allow you to adjust the
speed of playback.
| | 01:17 |
And Flash is the only player that allows
you to increase the size of the video.
| | 01:21 |
So currently have QuickTime Standard
selected, but its features are pretty
| | 01:24 |
limited when compared to the other
players.
| | 01:26 |
I'll select QuickTime Custom.
That gives me closed-captioning, speed
| | 01:30 |
control, and bookmarks.
I'll click Update.
| | 01:33 |
I'll see the message that my Global Player
Preferences have been updated.
| | 01:37 |
So now if I go to a course.
I'll just go to the Home Page here, and I
| | 01:42 |
play a movie.
>> Your going to take a look at a great
| | 01:49 |
new feature which allows us to use the
different blur effects which will.
| | 01:54 |
>> So, now I'm seeing the QuickTime Custom
interface here are the speed controls in
| | 01:57 |
the lower left-hand corner and here are my
bookmark buttons.
| | 02:02 |
Now, if you change your mind about which
player you want to use once you find your
| | 02:04 |
having trouble with a certain player.
You can always try another one.
| | 02:08 |
While you're on a course page you can go
to the preferences tab.
| | 02:13 |
Which is a shortcut to your sitewide layer
preferences.
| | 02:16 |
And from here maybe I'll choose the Flash
Player and update my preferences.
| | 02:21 |
Note that if you're not a member of our
library, or if you are but just aren't
| | 02:23 |
loggged in.
You can still access this preferences tab
| | 02:26 |
to try out different player types.
So now when I play a movie.
| | 02:30 |
I'm now looking at the Flash Player
interface, but notice with the flash
| | 02:34 |
player I don't have speed controls.
And unlike the QuickTime Custom player I
| | 02:41 |
can maximize the window by clicking
maximize and that allows me to zoom the
| | 02:45 |
player window to full screen.
So, those are the various player types
| | 02:52 |
available to you, and how to set your
player preferences.
| | 02:54 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Using basic video player controls| 00:01 |
Here's a quick overview of the player
controls you'll see while watching movies.
| | 00:04 |
Now, as mentioned previously some controls
will only be available when certain player
| | 00:07 |
types are selected.
I currently have the Flash Player selected.
| | 00:12 |
So, let's go back to the table of contents
and start a movie playing by clicking it's name.
| | 00:21 |
>> In photography dynamic range is the
measure of the darkest thing to the
| | 00:25 |
lightest thing that you can represent.
>> So, in the bottom left of the windows
| | 00:29 |
you can find the volume controls.
Slide left to decrease the volume and
| | 00:33 |
right to increase the volume.
Now, this volume control is independent of
| | 00:37 |
your computer's volume controls.
So, if you have the volume all the way up
| | 00:40 |
in the player and it's still not loud
enough for you, try turning your
| | 00:42 |
computer's speakers up.
As with most video players, you have a
| | 00:47 |
playback progress area, and this is a play
head that let's you know how far along you
| | 00:50 |
are in the movie.
You can drag or scrub it left or right to
| | 00:53 |
move forwards or back in the movie.
>> You can UNKNWON have different
| | 00:58 |
(UNKNOWN) range while I was standing at
this scene.
| | 01:03 |
>> Notice the time indicator reflects your
position in the movie.
| | 01:06 |
You can also click anywhere in the
Scrubber bar to jump to that section of
| | 01:09 |
the movie.
At the bottom, we have the playback controls.
| | 01:17 |
You've already seen me play and pause the
movie several times using this button.
| | 01:20 |
Now, don't confuse the button on either
side of the play pause button as rewind
| | 01:23 |
and fast forward.
Clicking these buttons will take you to
| | 01:26 |
the previous and next movie in the course.
So, only click them if you're ready to
| | 01:29 |
stop watching the current movie.
Now, a feature unique to the Flash Player
| | 01:34 |
is the maximize button.
Clicking that expands the movie and player
| | 01:37 |
to fit the entire screen.
At that point, it becomes the minimize button.
| | 01:41 |
Which you can click to take the movie back
to its default size.
| | 01:45 |
And also, with the Flash player, you can
drag the lower right hand corner of the
| | 01:48 |
movie window to manually adjust its size.
Notice how the movie scales right along
| | 01:52 |
with the window.
This can be convenient if you have limited
| | 01:55 |
screen real estate and want to work along
with the movie.
| | 01:58 |
You can try reducing the size of the movie
and placing it into a corner so that you
| | 02:01 |
can see other windows.
Notice though that with a small window
| | 02:04 |
size the playback controls can start
getting cut off.
| | 02:08 |
So, you have to make the window larger to
get at certain controls.
| | 02:11 |
To return it to its regular size the
easiest thing to do is to click the
| | 02:15 |
maximize button, and then click minimize
again.
| | 02:20 |
And again, this resizing capability is
only available when yo have the Flash
| | 02:23 |
Player selected.
So, that's a quick overview of the basic
| | 02:27 |
playback controls.
Now, there are other features found in the
| | 02:30 |
player window like the Closed Captioning
button and the Auto Play Chapter button,
| | 02:33 |
but we'll look at those in their own
movies.
| | 02:35 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Changing the playback speed of the videos| 00:01 |
The playback speed of our movies can be
adjusted on the fly if you're using the
| | 00:03 |
Quicktime Custom Player or the Windows
Media Player.
| | 00:07 |
Again, from any course page, go to the
preferences tab, and here, make sure you
| | 00:11 |
have either Quicktime Custom or Windows
Media selected.
| | 00:16 |
Windows Media will only show up if you're
using Windows.
| | 00:19 |
Then click Update Preferences.
I return to the table of contents and play
| | 00:24 |
a movie.
>> One of the things that responsive
| | 00:28 |
design really does, is it forces you
forces you to carefully consider just how
| | 00:33 |
your content regions could be structured.
The speed adjustment controls appear here
| | 00:39 |
in the lower left hand corner of the
player.
| | 00:42 |
You can increase the speed to either one
and a half or two times the original speed.
| | 00:48 |
With most courses, you'll find that the
author is still perfectly understandable
| | 00:50 |
at either of these speeds, and you'll get
through the movies much quicker this way.
| | 00:54 |
>> Our existing requirements on float
based labs means that source order in the
| | 00:57 |
element structure will directly effect how
you're going to be able to re-purpose
| | 01:00 |
content across multiple screens and
devices.
| | 01:03 |
>> As long as you don't mind the author
sounding a bit like a cartoon chipmunk.
| | 01:06 |
Contrarily, if you're having trouble
comprehending what an instructor is saying
| | 01:10 |
and you need to slow things down a bit,
drag the slider to the left.
| | 01:13 |
In some cases, this might help you better
understand what's being said.
| | 01:18 |
>> So, I wannna take a look at how you go
about planning your designs and how that
| | 01:22 |
can directly effect how you're going to be
structuring your content.
| | 01:27 |
Now, I've got the mockup open again but
we're.
| | 01:29 |
>> And of course you can reset the
playback speed back to its default setting
| | 01:32 |
to hear and see everything at regular
speed.
| | 01:35 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Playing an entire chapter continuously| 00:00 |
Although you're free to jump around a
training course, clicking and watching any
| | 00:03 |
movies in any order you like, there will
be times, when you'll want to watch a
| | 00:06 |
chapter in its entirety and in order.
To do so, just click the first movie in
| | 00:10 |
the chapter or whichever movie you'd like
to start with.
| | 00:17 |
In the movie playback window, next to the
play controls, you'll find the Auto Play
| | 00:19 |
Chapter button.
Clicking it turns the grey, Off button to
| | 00:23 |
a white On button, indicating that you've
chosen to play the rest of the chapter.
| | 00:27 |
So when this movie reaches its end,
instead of just stopping and you having to
| | 00:30 |
manually close the window and open the
next movie, it will automatically load and
| | 00:33 |
play the next movie in the chapter.
I'll just jump ahead to the end, hit Play,
| | 00:38 |
and we'll see it jump to the next movie.
>> Let's take a look at two controllers.
| | 00:46 |
>> And it will continue to play each
subsequent movie until the last movie of
| | 00:49 |
the chapter is reached, at which point you
can click the Next Movie button to start
| | 00:52 |
playing the first movie of the next
chapter, or you can close the window to
| | 00:55 |
browse through the table of contents and
find another movie you'd like to watch.
| | 01:04 |
Another way to play an entire chapter is
to click the chapter name in the table of contents.
| | 01:12 |
That starts the first movie in the chapter
playing and turns on autoplay chapter so
| | 01:15 |
that all other movies in the chapter will
play continuously.
| | 01:18 |
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Turning on closed captioning| 00:01 |
As previously mentioned, each new course
released on the library includes
| | 00:03 |
transcripts of each movie, which are
usually added anywhere between a few days
| | 00:07 |
to a week or two after the course is
released.
| | 00:11 |
If you see the little CC icon on the
Course detail page, that lets you know
| | 00:14 |
that the course has had transcripts added.
And again, closed captioning has multiple purposes.
| | 00:19 |
First it allows our members with hearing
impairments to be able to follow along
| | 00:22 |
with our training.
But closed captioning can also be
| | 00:25 |
convenient if you're in an environment
where you can't listen to audio or if you
| | 00:27 |
don't have headphones and don't want to
bother other people around you.
| | 00:31 |
In those cases you can simply turn your
computer volume off, turn on closed
| | 00:34 |
captioning and you'll still be able to
learn.
| | 00:37 |
Now you can turn closed captioning on and
off in two ways.
| | 00:39 |
First, you can go to the Preferences tab
on any course page that has closed captions.
| | 00:43 |
And here click On under Closed Captioning,
and then click Update Preferences.
| | 00:52 |
With that select, all movies will play
with closed captions on.
| | 00:55 |
>> Phasing in Revit gives us the ability
to apply the fourth dimension or time to
| | 01:00 |
our projects.
Revit's approach to phasing is simple and straightforward.
| | 01:06 |
A simple timeline is established for your
project that includes one or more points
| | 01:09 |
in time.
>> Notice the CC icon here in the playback
| | 01:13 |
controls is highlighted.
So you can also turn and close captions on
| | 01:16 |
and off by toggling the CC button.
Now even when I have closed captions
| | 01:22 |
turned off, when I close this player,
notice it's still turned on here under Preferences.
| | 01:28 |
So if I were to play another move right
now, closed captions would still be on.
| | 01:35 |
>> Phasing can be a little tricky to
understand at first because there is a few
| | 01:38 |
different places where you need to look to
configure its various settings and features.
| | 01:43 |
>> Of course, I can toggle them off again.
But to adjust their default state, I need
| | 01:48 |
to go back to preferences and turn them
back off from here and update my preferences.
| | 01:56 |
And that's how to work with closed
captions, in any course that has them.
| | 01:59 |

| Providing feedback about the content you've watched| 00:01 |
After you've watched some or most of a
training title, you may have a few
| | 00:03 |
comments or thoughts about the course, the
instructor, or the way the material is
| | 00:07 |
presented, and we would really love to
hear from you.
| | 00:11 |
While signed into your account, at the
bottom of the table of contents, you'll
| | 00:13 |
find a course feedback button.
Clicking that button takes you to a short
| | 00:17 |
evaluation survey.
Where you can rate your experience and
| | 00:20 |
satisfaction level with the course.
We appreciate any feedback you'd like to provide.
| | 00:25 |
Your thoughts and suggestions help shape
our future tutorials and the subjects we
| | 00:28 |
cover on our library.

| Finding courses to watch next| 00:01 |
At the bottom of each course page you'll
find an area labeled suggested courses to
| | 00:04 |
watch next.
These are courses that have been selected
| | 00:07 |
by our content teams as the logical or
related next courses that you can watch
| | 00:10 |
after you've completed the course, which
page you're currently on.
| | 00:15 |
Just click any of the suggested courses to
go directly to that course's page.
| | 00:19 |
And because suggested courses appear at
the bottom of every course page, you'll
| | 00:22 |
always find more courses to check out.
Allowing you to follow link after link
| | 00:26 |
along a learning path of related courses
and topics.
| | 00:29 |
As you land on a new page, you can stop
and watch a few movies or even the entire
| | 00:33 |
course and then move on to the next
related course.

| Understanding the types of courses we publish| 00:01 |
If you've spent some time browsing our
library, you're probably aware that our
| | 00:03 |
courses are not only about teaching you
how to use specific software products.
| | 00:08 |
However, you might not be familiar with
all the different types or series of
| | 00:10 |
courses we offer.
So, in this movie, I'd like to give you a
| | 00:13 |
brief overview of several types of courses
to give you an idea of the range of topics
| | 00:16 |
and material we cover.
If you're just starting out on a topic,
| | 00:20 |
look for training titles with names like
Up and Running, Foundations and
| | 00:23 |
Fundamentals or Essential Training.
Up and running courses like Up and Running
| | 00:27 |
with HTML, Up and Running with Prezi and
Up and Running with Audacity, are usually
| | 00:31 |
shorter courses designed to quickly get
you up to speed with the topic or software.
| | 00:37 |
Foundations and Fundamentals courses are
courses that focus on a single aspect of a
| | 00:41 |
larger topic.
So, for example, your C course is like
| | 00:45 |
foundations of video: interviews,
foundations of audio: reverb, foundations
| | 00:49 |
of programming: database as well as
freelancing fundamentals, conflict
| | 00:53 |
resolution fundamentals or digital
publishing fundamentals.
| | 00:59 |
Essential training courses are
comprehensive entry level overviews of a
| | 01:02 |
software application or tool, programming
language or operating system.
| | 01:06 |
For example, we have courses like Word
2013 Essential Training, Joomla!
| | 01:10 |
3 Essential Training and Google Calendar
Essential Training.
| | 01:14 |
Now, if you're already familiar with a
software product but want to learn what's
| | 01:18 |
new in the latest version or had a migrate
from one version to another, look for
| | 01:21 |
courses that include new features or
migrating in their titles.
| | 01:27 |
Like Drupal 7 New Features, Photoshop CS6
new features, Migrating from AutoCAD to
| | 01:31 |
Revit, or Migrating from Outlook 2003 to
Outlook 2010.
| | 01:35 |
To practice what you already know, or to
learn by working through a specific
| | 01:38 |
project, look for a creating, building or
create your first type of course, like
| | 01:42 |
Create Your First Online Store with
Magento Go, Creating Infographics with
| | 01:45 |
Illustrator Or Building and Monetizing
Game Apps for Android.
| | 01:51 |
For more advanced topics look for in
depth, power shortcuts, or tips and tricks.
| | 01:55 |
Courses like InDesign Tables In Depth,
SEO: Link Building In Depth, Flash
| | 02:00 |
Professional Power Shortcuts, Excel 2013
Power Shortcuts, iPad Tips and Tricks,
| | 02:06 |
Windows 7 tips and tricks.
And Ableton Live 9 tips and tricks.
| | 02:13 |
Now, occasionally, software companies will
release beta or early version of their software.
| | 02:17 |
And we'll release first look courses to
help you get a jump on learning the
| | 02:20 |
software before or shortly after its
release.
| | 02:23 |
For example, we have courses like Easel JS
first look.
| | 02:27 |
Or no JS first look.
First look courses are often replaced with
| | 02:31 |
an up and running or central training
course when the software is more stable or
| | 02:34 |
has been officially released.
And finally for documentary films look for
| | 02:39 |
creative inspirations and creative spark
series.
| | 02:42 |
Creative inspirations like big spaceship,
digital create agency and (UNKNOWN) logo
| | 02:46 |
type designer are full on feature films
while creative spark movies Like Lauren
| | 02:51 |
Lemon creative portrait photographer and
title case typographic artisans are
| | 02:55 |
shorter form documentaries.
But both series show you how real people
| | 03:01 |
use the kinds of skills you can learn here
on lynda.com.
| | 03:04 |
And we have several other types of courses
that fall somewhere in between all these
| | 03:07 |
course types.
Be sure to take some time to browse around
| | 03:10 |
to see what you can discover in our
library.

| Watching courses with AirPlay and the iOS app| 00:01 |
The updated iOS app from lynda.com, offers
an airplay feature that works with iPhone,
| | 00:05 |
iPod touch, and iPad.
Airplay lets you quickly and wirelessly,
| | 00:09 |
move our movies from your Apple device, to
a TV or projector.
| | 00:14 |
This video demonstrates how to connect an
Apple TV and lynda.com to help you learn
| | 00:17 |
from our movies from your television at
home, at school, or at a business.
| | 00:21 |
All you need is an active lynda.com
account, our iOS app version 2.0 or
| | 00:25 |
higher, and an Apple TV.
Begin by connecting the Apple TV to your
| | 00:30 |
TV or projector via an HDMI cable.
Make sure your Apple TV is plugged in and
| | 00:34 |
powered on.
Next make sure your Apple TV is connected
| | 00:38 |
to your network either via Ethernet or
over WiFi.
| | 00:43 |
You can check your connection by going to
Settings > General > Network.
| | 00:46 |
If you're connected over WiFi, you should
see your network name.
| | 00:53 |
If you're connected via an Ethernet cable
you won't see a network name but you
| | 00:55 |
should see an IP address if you're
properly connected.
| | 01:00 |
If you have multiple Apple TVs press the
Menu button on your remote to return to
| | 01:03 |
General settings and note the name of the
one you're setting up.
| | 01:07 |
Next on your iOS device open the lynda.com
mobile app.
| | 01:12 |
Navigate to and select the course you wish
to view.
| | 01:14 |
Then tap the movie you want to watch.
You may want to pause the movie until you
| | 01:22 |
begin playing it on your Apple TV.
As long as your device is connected to the
| | 01:28 |
same network as your Apple TV, you should
see this button to the right of the
| | 01:30 |
playback controls.
Tap it, and all of the Apple TVs or
| | 01:34 |
airport express bay stations on your
network will appear.
| | 01:37 |
You could play audio from your iPad
through an airport express using Airplay.
| | 01:41 |
But if you want to stream audio and video,
select the Apple TV you want to play the
| | 01:44 |
movies through.
Regardless of what screen your Apple TV is
| | 01:48 |
currently on, the movie should begin
playing after a few seconds.
| | 01:51 |
While the movie is playing you can control
it from your device or with your Apple TV remote.
| | 01:56 |
In addition to playing and pausing the
movie you can rewind 30 seconds.
| | 02:02 |
Skip to the next or previous movies.
Or drag the scrubber bar to jump to a
| | 02:07 |
specific point in the currently playing
movie.
| | 02:15 |
Tap to turn auto play on if you'd like the
entire course to play continuously.
| | 02:18 |
And tap back when you want to stop playing
and resume browsing the library from your device.
| | 02:26 |
So if you have an Apple TV and the free
lynda.com iOS app, we hope you'll take
| | 02:29 |
advantage of this quick and easy ability
to move your training to the big screen.

3. Managing Your TrainingCreating and managing your playlists| 00:01 |
As you browse through lynda.com, you'll
probably come across lots of courses you'd
| | 00:03 |
like to watch.
You can easily keep track of the ones that
| | 00:06 |
interest you by creating Playlists.
Which let you organize the courses into
| | 00:09 |
categories and lists that make sense to
you.
| | 00:13 |
Here on the Home page under the Queue tab,
I can use this menu to quickly access any
| | 00:16 |
playlists I previously created.
In addition to the queue, which is your
| | 00:19 |
default playlists you can create
additional playlists organized in any way
| | 00:22 |
you prefer.
For example, I've created a photography
| | 00:26 |
playlist and I can select it to see the
top five courses I've added to it.
| | 00:30 |
I could also go to the My Courses menu and
select Playlists from here, and here on
| | 00:33 |
the left sidebar I can select any of the
playlists I've created to see them in
| | 00:36 |
their entirety.
So, playlists allow me to quickly save and
| | 00:40 |
jump to any of these courses to start
learning.
| | 00:44 |
To get started with your own playlists,
first sign into your account.
| | 00:47 |
Once you're signed in, you'll see the
Queue tab here under My courses.
| | 00:50 |
In this account, I currently have no
courses assigned to any playlists.
| | 00:54 |
So, the Playlist button looks like this.
And you'll find it almost everywhere a
| | 00:59 |
course title is listed.
For example, every course under the latest
| | 01:02 |
release is here on our homepage has a
playlist button.
| | 01:05 |
To create your first playlist just click
the button next to any course you want to
| | 01:07 |
remember to watch.
This gives you a choice of queue, add to a
| | 01:11 |
new playlist or go to playlists.
Lets select queue.
| | 01:15 |
The queue is your default and first
playlist.
| | 01:17 |
You can assign any courses you want to
your queue, but this might be a good place
| | 01:20 |
to save courses that you want to get back
to as soon as possible.
| | 01:23 |
Or that just look interesting but may not
fit in any other playlist categories you
| | 01:26 |
might have created.
We'll look at creating additional
| | 01:29 |
playlists in just a moment but for now
notice that the course is now appeared on
| | 01:32 |
the Queue tab here under my courses.
It also appears under the My Courses menu
| | 01:37 |
here in the navigation bar.
And again you'll find the playlist button
| | 01:40 |
just about everywhere a course is listed
on the site.
| | 01:43 |
If you browse our library by subject,
software or author, for example all choose
| | 01:48 |
subject of photography, find the playlist
button next to each course here as well.
| | 01:55 |
So.
here I can quickly at several courses that
| | 01:57 |
interest me to my queue.
And you'll also find the app to play this
| | 02:04 |
button at the top of each individual
course page.
| | 02:13 |
So, here on this course page I can see the
app to playlist button.
| | 02:16 |
I'll again add that to my queue.
You can see the top five items in your
| | 02:19 |
playlist at any time by returning to the
home page and looking under the queue tab.
| | 02:26 |
Click View All to see your entire queue.
So, this where you manage your playlists.
| | 02:34 |
Some things you can do here include
rearranging the playlists by dragging
| | 02:36 |
course names up and down.
Or you can click the Top button to
| | 02:40 |
instantly move a course to the top of the
list.
| | 02:43 |
You can also see how far along in a course
you've progressed and what the duration of
| | 02:46 |
the courses are.
To remove a course from your playlist,
| | 02:50 |
just click the X button.
Now, from here you can also create
| | 02:54 |
additional playlists.
Again, your first playlist is always
| | 02:56 |
going to be your queue, but you're also
free to create other playlists to organize
| | 02:59 |
and arrange the courses you'd like to
watch in any way you like.
| | 03:03 |
Start by clicking Create New Playlist.
Give your playlist a name, call this one photography.
| | 03:09 |
If you like, you can add a description
which might be useful if you're trying to
| | 03:12 |
remember why you created a particular
playlist.
| | 03:14 |
I'll leave that blank for now and click
Save.
| | 03:16 |
And now I see photography listed under
playlists in the left column.
| | 03:20 |
And because it's a new playlist, it has
zero courses.
| | 03:22 |
But you can easily move courses from one
playlist to another simply by dragging them.
| | 03:27 |
Since these are all photography related
courses to begin with, I'll just drag them
| | 03:30 |
right to photography.
I see that my queue is now empty.
| | 03:35 |
And photography contains three courses.
Now if for some reason you want a course
| | 03:40 |
to appear in more than one playlist, go to
that course's page by clicking its name.
| | 03:46 |
Then, click the add to playlist button up
here and choose the other playlist you
| | 03:49 |
want to add it to.
Now, you can also use this button to
| | 03:52 |
create new playlists, rather than going
back to the main playlist page.
| | 03:56 |
For example, maybe I want to create a
playlist of audio-related courses.
| | 03:59 |
Go back to the Subject then menu and
choose audio, and maybe I want to start
| | 04:04 |
with this course here.
And I'll choose add to new playlist.
| | 04:10 |
That gives me a field to name the
playlist, I'll call it Audio, I'll click
| | 04:14 |
Save, and now as you can see, I have an
audio playlist.
| | 04:19 |
And now, it's just a simple matter to add
the other courses I want to watch to this playlist.
| | 04:33 |
(SOUND).
Now if I go back to the My Courses menu,
| | 04:35 |
to playlists.
I can see and manage the playlist I've created.
| | 04:40 |
And once you've created more than one
playlist, when you return to the home
| | 04:45 |
page, you'll find a menu under the
playlist tab which you can use to select
| | 04:49 |
the playlist you want to browse.
So, we hope you'll take advantage of your
| | 04:58 |
playlists and enjoy using them to keep
track of all the courses you'd like to
| | 05:01 |
watch at lynda.com.

| Sharing your playlists| 00:01 |
Once you've taken the time to create
playlists, you might want to share them
| | 00:03 |
with other people to show them what you've
accomplished, or so they can follow the
| | 00:05 |
same learning path that's worked for you.
Or, maybe you're leading a team of
| | 00:10 |
co-workers, and you want to provide them
with a list of courses to make sure
| | 00:12 |
they're all up to speed with the skills
they'll need to accomplish their goals.
| | 00:16 |
Whatever the case, it's easy to create and
share as many playlists as you like.
| | 00:20 |
Start by navigating to your playlist from
the My Courses menu and here, select the
| | 00:23 |
playlist you'd like to share.
If you haven't done so already, you might
| | 00:29 |
want to consider adding an optional
description to the playlist.
| | 00:33 |
You probably know why you created a
particular playlist, but it might be
| | 00:35 |
useful to add a description to give some
context to the people you're sharing the
| | 00:38 |
playlist with.
Click the Save Changes button when you're
| | 00:43 |
done, and then click the Share check box.
This gives you five choices for sharing
| | 00:50 |
your playlist.
You can share it via e-mail, by copying
| | 00:53 |
and pasting a direct link, or via
Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
| | 00:57 |
Click the E-mail button and a window
appears where you can enter the e-mail
| | 00:59 |
address of the people you'd like to share
the playlist with.
| | 01:06 |
If you're sending the list to multiple
recipients, separate each address with a comma.
| | 01:13 |
If you'd like, you can customize the
default message or just leave it as it is,
| | 01:16 |
and then click Send.
Your recipients will receive an email with
| | 01:21 |
a link to your shared playlist.
Similarly, if you click the button to
| | 01:25 |
share a link, a window will open with the
URL or address of your shared play list.
| | 01:29 |
Now, in actuality, this is opening the
same window that we saw when I click the
| | 01:33 |
e-mail link button.
But in this case, I just have the Share
| | 01:36 |
link tab selected.
So, in this case, we can just click the
| | 01:40 |
Copy button, to copy the address of your
playlist to your clipboard.
| | 01:43 |
And then, you can paste it into a
document, webpage, blog or anywhere else
| | 01:46 |
you would like to share the URL.
For example, I've copied the URL, so I'll
| | 01:51 |
create a new tab in my browser, paste it
in and this is how my recipients will see
| | 01:55 |
my shared playlist page.
The name of the playlist appears here at
| | 01:59 |
the top with the description beneath it.
And viewers will be able to see your name
| | 02:03 |
and when you last updated the playlist.
So, if they bookmarked this page, they'll
| | 02:06 |
be able to return to it at anytime to the
launch the courses they want or need to watch.
| | 02:10 |
Non-subscribers to our library will be
able to view your playlist but will only
| | 02:13 |
be able to watch the free sample movies in
each course.
| | 02:17 |
Current subscribers of course, have
complete access to the entire library at
| | 02:19 |
all times.
And the subscribers to lynda.com, they
| | 02:22 |
also have the option of clicking Save this
Playlist.
| | 02:25 |
That will save a copy of the playlist as
it currently appears to their own
| | 02:28 |
collection of playlists.
From there they can modify the playlist
| | 02:31 |
like any other playlist and add or remove
courses as they wish.
| | 02:34 |
But this also means that their saved
version of your playlist does not update
| | 02:37 |
if you make changes to your version of
your playlist.
| | 02:40 |
If they want to see what courses you may
have added or removed from your list,
| | 02:43 |
you'll have to return to the original URL
you shared.
| | 02:46 |
I'll close this tab and return to my
playlists.
| | 02:49 |
Now, as long as you keep the share button
checked, the people you shared with will
| | 02:52 |
always be able to see your playlist.
If you want to stop sharing the playlist,
| | 02:57 |
just uncheck Share.
And then, confirm that you want to stop sharing.
| | 03:02 |
Now, if I open another new tab, and paste
that address into the browser again, I see
| | 03:05 |
this message telling me that playlist is
no longer available.
| | 03:13 |
But if you do decide to share the playlist
again, or if you just accidentally
| | 03:15 |
unshared it, just click the Share button
again.
| | 03:18 |
And the URL for your playlist always
remains the same.
| | 03:22 |
So, anyone you previously shared the
playlist with will still be able to access
| | 03:25 |
it, if they bookmarked the page or saved
the URL.
| | 03:28 |
There's no need to resend the URL.
So, again, if I create a new tab.
| | 03:31 |
Paste that same address, and hit Enter,
I'll see that that playlist is in fact
| | 03:34 |
shared again.
And that's shared playlist.
| | 03:39 |
They're a great way to share the learning
paths that have worked for you, with others.
| | 03:42 |

| Bookmarking videos, chapters, or courses that interest you| 00:00 |
As a lynda.com member, you can use the
Bookmarks feature to mark any courses,
| | 00:03 |
chapters, individual videos, or even
specific parts of videos you find
| | 00:06 |
especially important or useful so that you
can easily find them again later.
| | 00:11 |
I'll start with a look at how bookmarks
work.
| | 00:14 |
While logged into your account, roll your
mouse over the My Courses menu at the top
| | 00:17 |
of the page and select Bookmarks.
And there I can see the bookmarks that
| | 00:21 |
I've previously created.
Clicking on a bookmark's name takes you
| | 00:25 |
directly to that course, chapter, video or
time code.
| | 00:28 |
For example, clicking a video, immediately
opens and plays that video from the beginning.
| | 00:39 |
So now let's take a look at how we create
bookmarks by opening a course page.
| | 00:45 |
Let's go back to the Home page, find a
course to look at, and note how the
| | 00:49 |
bookmark icon appears under the courses
title and next to each chapter and
| | 00:54 |
individual movie in the course.
To bookmark any of these items simply
| | 01:00 |
click the bookmark icon, notice the
bookmark fills in making it easy to see
| | 01:03 |
which items you've marked.
You may be bookmarking items so you can
| | 01:07 |
watch them again later or you might also
want to bookmark unwatched chapters or
| | 01:10 |
movies based on their names to remind
yourself to watch those movies at a later time.
| | 01:15 |
So, adding a bookmark is as simple as
clicking the bookmark icon next to an
| | 01:17 |
item, but when browsing through your
bookmarks later, you might not remember
| | 01:20 |
why you marked a particular chapter or
movie.
| | 01:23 |
You can add details to your bookmarks by
clicking the arrow next to the bookmark icon.
| | 01:27 |
Which opens the Details window.
Here you can leave the default name, or
| | 01:30 |
change the name to something that will
better help you remember why you're
| | 01:34 |
bookmarking the movie.
I'll leave the default name.
| | 01:37 |
In the description field I might enter
something like, has good tips for adaptive design.
| | 01:46 |
Or anything else that will help with movie
and context for me later.
| | 01:49 |
You can use up to 300 characters in the
description field.
| | 01:52 |
We also suggest that you add tags to your
bookmarks which will help you categorize
| | 01:55 |
and locate your bookmarked movies later.
You can create your own tags with each tag
| | 02:00 |
separated by spaces, for instance, work
and website.
| | 02:05 |
If you're entering a tag that contains
more than one word, put it in quotes, for
| | 02:09 |
example, adaptive design.
You can also click any of these suggested
| | 02:14 |
tags that appear below.
Click, Save when you're done.
| | 02:20 |
And the process for adding bookmarks to
entire courses, chapters, or individual
| | 02:23 |
video is identical.
Just click the arrow next to the bookmark
| | 02:27 |
icon and fill in the information.
Now the fourth type of bookmark you can
| | 02:30 |
add is a time code bookmark.
These are bookmarks you add while watching
| | 02:33 |
a movie.
To take full advantage of time code
| | 02:35 |
bookmarks you need to use any player other
than the quick time standard player, which
| | 02:38 |
doesn't support creating bookmarks in the
player window.
| | 02:42 |
You can go to the Preferences tab on any
course page, to select which video player
| | 02:45 |
you're using.
Alright so Quicktime custom is my player.
| | 02:50 |
I'll go back to the Table of Contents.
And let's start a movie playing.
| | 02:54 |
>> The CSS designer panel also allowed.
>> Just pause that.
| | 03:04 |
Now let's say I got about halfway through
this movie.
| | 03:05 |
I'll just click right about there.
Let's say the author just said something
| | 03:08 |
that I want to make sure I'll remember
later.
| | 03:10 |
At any point while watching the movie.
Whether the movie is paused or whether
| | 03:13 |
it's playing.
You can click the time code bookmark button.
| | 03:16 |
To bookmark that exact moment in the
movie.
| | 03:18 |
Notice a bookmark icon has now appeared
here in the Scrubber Bar area.
| | 03:22 |
Now I can see exactly where I placed my
time code bookmark.
| | 03:25 |
And you can continue adding time code
bookmarks if you come across more
| | 03:27 |
information in the same movie that you
want to remember.
| | 03:30 |
So I bring it a little further along, I
want to add a time code bookmark.
| | 03:33 |
Here's the next one.
Maybe even one right here.
| | 03:37 |
Additionally you can also bookmark the
entire movie by clicking the Movie
| | 03:40 |
Bookmark button, that way you don't have
to close the movie and bookmark it from
| | 03:44 |
the course details page.
Now to view the bookmarks I just created I
| | 03:50 |
once again go to My Courses and select
Bookmarks.
| | 03:56 |
Bookmarks are displayed with the most
recently created bookmarks listed first so
| | 03:59 |
I can see the bookmarks I just made at the
top of the list.
| | 04:03 |
Clicking on a time code bookmark opens the
movie.
| | 04:06 |
>> I can go down to this promo class and
here.
| | 04:08 |
>> And in the case of the click time
custom player will actually jump me right
| | 04:11 |
to the time code for the bookmark that I
clicked.
| | 04:16 |
If you're using the flash player, clicking
the time code bookmark will just open the
| | 04:18 |
movie, and you'll have to jump to the
bookmark location.
| | 04:21 |
But, again, time code bookmarks are a
great way to remember very specific
| | 04:24 |
information in any movie.
I'll close that movie.
| | 04:28 |
Now, while viewing your bookmarks, you can
also choose between a simple or a detailed
| | 04:31 |
view of the bookmarks.
With detail being the default.
| | 04:35 |
Here the detail view, you can see the name
of the item you bookmarked whether it's a
| | 04:38 |
course, chapter, video, or time code, as
well as any description or tags you added.
| | 04:44 |
Here's the video bookmark I just created,
it has the name of the movie, the
| | 04:47 |
description, and the tags I added to it.
Now clicking on the tag displays all the
| | 04:52 |
bookmarks that share that tag.
If I had tagged other bookmarks with
| | 04:56 |
remember they would show up here as well
and you can continue filtering your
| | 04:58 |
results by clicking additional tags to
display all of the movies that have those
| | 05:00 |
tags in common.
So if I wanted to see all of the movies
| | 05:05 |
that had both remember and important I
could add that tag.
| | 05:09 |
Click the minus button next to the tags to
remove them.
| | 05:13 |
You can also click See All Tags to browse
through all the tags used in each of your bookmarks.
| | 05:17 |
If you have a great number of tags you can
use the letters to navigate to your tags
| | 05:20 |
alphabetically, but I only have a few
here, and you can return to your bookmark
| | 05:22 |
list again by clicking Return To My
Bookmarks.
| | 05:27 |
Other ways to search through your
bookmarks include using the filter by type
| | 05:30 |
menu to display all types of bookmarks, or
only courses, chapters, videos or time
| | 05:33 |
code bookmarks.
You can also type search terms into the
| | 05:39 |
search my bookmarks field, which is
website, and then you'll see a list of
| | 05:42 |
results showing you all the bookmarks that
have any names, descriptions or tags that
| | 05:45 |
match your search term.
Let's clear that search.
| | 05:51 |
Lastly, there may be times when you want
to edit your bookmarks, which you can do
| | 05:54 |
by clicking the edit link next to a
bookmark you want to change.
| | 05:59 |
That gives you the details.
Maybe I want to add a tag here.
| | 06:04 |
I'll update that.
Or you can also just click Delete to
| | 06:07 |
remove a bookmark that's no longer needed,
or one that you may have accidentally created.
| | 06:12 |
Just remember that deleting a bookmark
can't be undone, so be sure that you
| | 06:14 |
really do want to delete the item.
So that's how to work with bookmarks.
| | 06:19 |
It's a great feature for storing and
organizing the important information you
| | 06:22 |
learn while watching our training videos.
| | 06:25 |

| Starting where you last left off with Course History| 00:01 |
Any time you sign back in to your
lynda.com account, it's easy to pick up
| | 00:04 |
where you last left off.
Once you've signed in, you can go to the
| | 00:07 |
course history tab, here under My Courses.
Here you can see the five most recently
| | 00:11 |
courses you watched listed in
chronological order, with the most recent
| | 00:14 |
course at the top of the list.
You can click any of these courses to jump
| | 00:18 |
right to that course page.
To see your full course history you can
| | 00:22 |
click View All.
And now I'm seeing my full course history.
| | 00:26 |
By default the most recent video title is
toggled open so you can see the videos you
| | 00:29 |
watched in the course.
You can click the arrows next to other
| | 00:33 |
courses to see the videos you've watched
in those titles as well.
| | 00:39 |
Click on any video name to launch that
video right from here without having to
| | 00:41 |
navigate to the course details page first.
>> Got my lens reversed.
| | 00:47 |
I had set the aperture on it to 5.6.
>> And of course, if you do want to jump
| | 00:51 |
to a course directly, just click its name.
You can get back to your list of recently
| | 00:57 |
viewed videos at any time by going to the
My Courses menu and choosing Course History.
| | 01:01 |
Now while you're here, you can use the
playlist button next to each course to add
| | 01:05 |
any of the courses to any of your
playlists.
| | 01:08 |
You can check on your progress in any of
the courses and see how much time it will
| | 01:10 |
take to complete the course.
And you can see how long ago you last
| | 01:14 |
viewed movies from the course.
You can also sort your course history by
| | 01:17 |
clicking any of these column headers.
So now, I'm starting my course history by
| | 01:21 |
my progress.
You can see I have three that are 100% complete.
| | 01:25 |
Now they're sorted by the remaining time.
Clicking any selected header reverses the
| | 01:29 |
order, so now I'm seeing the courses that
have the most time left to go.
| | 01:32 |
And I'll just click Last Viewed again to
go back to the default listing.
| | 01:37 |
To remove any courses from your course
history, just click the X button.
| | 01:41 |
And that's how to view and manage your
course history.
| | 01:43 |

| Printing and sharing Certificates of Completion| 00:01 |
Certificates of completion make it easier
than ever to share your success and
| | 00:04 |
progress at lynda dot com with your
coworkers, friends, and employers.
| | 00:08 |
As you work your way through a training
course, an eye icon automatically appears
| | 00:11 |
next to any movie you've watched, making
it easy to keep track of your progress.
| | 00:16 |
And these icons remain associated with
your account no matter how many times
| | 00:19 |
you've logged in and out.
So you can always come back and find your
| | 00:21 |
place right away.
With each course you finish, a new
| | 00:24 |
certificate of completion will appear in
your account.
| | 00:27 |
Just go to My Courses and click
Certificates of Completion.
| | 00:30 |
And here you'll see a list of your
completed titles.
| | 00:34 |
Certificates of completion are a great way
to let your friends, coworkers and current
| | 00:37 |
and potential employers see the value and
divesity of your skills.
| | 00:41 |
And you have multiple ways to displaying
and sharing your certificates.
| | 00:45 |
You can click View/Print to see your
certificate.
| | 00:48 |
Then click Save As PDF to save your
certificate in the Adobe PDF format.
| | 00:56 |
You can then open and print the PDF file
on your printer.
| | 01:04 |
The second option is to email your
certificate of completion.
| | 01:06 |
Click Share and in the Window that opens
the Email tab will be selected.
| | 01:11 |
Enter the email address of the person to
whom you'd like to send your certificate.
| | 01:14 |
If you'd like to send your certificate to
multiple recipients, separate their
| | 01:18 |
addresses with a comma.
And if you like type a short message in
| | 01:24 |
the personal message field.
And when you're satisfied with the email
| | 01:31 |
message, click Send.
If you have your own website or blog you
| | 01:35 |
can also create a link to your certificate
of completion, just click the Link tab.
| | 01:39 |
And to create a link to your certificate
of completion, copy the address under Link
| | 01:44 |
to The Certificate, which if I open a new
browser tab and paste, will look like this.
| | 01:53 |
Or if you want to provide a link to a page
displaying all your certificates, Copy the
| | 01:56 |
URL under link to all certificates.
So when I send that link to someone and
| | 02:02 |
they click the link, it will look like
this.
| | 02:04 |
And you can click on any of these View
Certificate buttons to see that particular certificate.
| | 02:12 |
And if you have accounts with Facebook,
Twitter or Linkedin, you can click any of
| | 02:17 |
their icons to log into your account and
share your certificate.
| | 02:23 |
And you can repeat this process for each
of your certificates of completion.
| | 02:24 |
Just click View/Print or Share next to any
of your certificates.
| | 02:27 |
If you'd like to see how close you are to
completing other courses you have been watching.
| | 02:32 |
Click Course History, and here you can see
a progress bar next to each course.
| | 02:37 |
As well as column telling you how much
time remains to be watched in each course.
| | 02:41 |
you can click the column headers if you'd
like to sort your courses by progress, or
| | 02:44 |
by remaining time.
So keep watching videos at lynda.com and
| | 02:47 |
start earning those certificates of
completion.

| Keeping yourself logged in| 00:01 |
By default, our system automatically logs
you out of your lynda.com session after
| | 00:04 |
four hours of inactivity.
If you're finding it inconvenient to have
| | 00:08 |
to log in again when you return to
lynda.com, be sure to check stay logged in
| | 00:11 |
the next time you login.
With that option checked, you'll remain
| | 00:16 |
continuously logged in when you use that
computer and browser again to access lynda.com.
| | 00:20 |
Although, be aware that if you don't
access your account for two weeks you will
| | 00:22 |
have to log in manually with your username
and password again.
| | 00:26 |
Also bear in mind that this feature is
browser dependent, so if you access
| | 00:28 |
lynda.com from two different computers or
two different browsers on the same
| | 00:31 |
computer, you will still have to log in
again.
| | 00:36 |
We also recommend against checking stay
logged in if you share your computer with
| | 00:39 |
others or if you're accessing your account
from a public computer due to the risk of
| | 00:42 |
someone else accessing your account
information.
| | 00:45 |
After accessing lynda.com from a public
computer, or a computer that's not your
| | 00:48 |
own, be sure to click the log out link.
| | 00:50 |

| Logging in from multiple computers| 00:01 |
Occasionally, when you log into your
lynda.com account, you may see this
| | 00:05 |
already logged in message.
This simply means you were logged into
| | 00:08 |
your account from another computer or
browser recently and didn't log out.
| | 00:11 |
For example, maybe you were watching a
lynda.com video while at home.
| | 00:14 |
And then an hour ago, when you try to log
in from your work computer, you'll see
| | 00:17 |
this message indicating that your account
is still logged in on your home computer.
| | 00:21 |
Just click Yes to log your account out of
whichever other computer you were
| | 00:23 |
previously logged into and to log yourself
into your current computer.
| | 00:28 |
You're always free to access your
Lynda.com account from as many computers
| | 00:30 |
as you like, but you can only access from
one computer at a time.
| | 00:33 |
To prevent this message from appearing in
the future, just make sure you click Log
| | 00:36 |
Out whenever you're done with your current
session.

4. Managing Your AccountUpdating your member profile information| 00:01 |
In this chapter, we'll look at the various
options and setting that are available for
| | 00:03 |
you to manage your lynda.com account.
Pretty much everything you'll need in
| | 00:07 |
regards to your account can be found under
the my account menu.
| | 00:10 |
Let's start by selecting my profile.
On this page you can update your log in
| | 00:15 |
information and your contact information.
Just click any of the edit buttons to edit
| | 00:19 |
that information.
So for example, if you wanted to edit your
| | 00:22 |
password, you could edit, enter your
current password, and then enter a new
| | 00:25 |
password noting that it has to be at least
six characters with a letter and a number.
| | 00:30 |
And then confirm that password and click
save.
| | 00:33 |
As long as your password conforms to the
character requirements and you typed it
| | 00:36 |
exactly the same both times, you won't run
into any problems changing your password.
| | 00:40 |
I'm just going to cancel that for now.
This is also where you can change your username.
| | 00:44 |
Although you probably won't want or need
to do that as often as you might want to
| | 00:47 |
change your password.
But you can delete and type in a new
| | 00:49 |
username and then enter your current
password to change that name.
| | 00:53 |
As long as the name you choose is not in
use by another member, your log in name
| | 00:55 |
will be changed.
And again, I'll just cancel this.
| | 00:58 |
Similarly, if you need to change your
contact information, just click Edit next
| | 01:02 |
to Contact Information.
And then just change the appropriate fields.
| | 01:06 |
And then click Save when you're done.
And that's how you change your username,
| | 01:10 |
password, or contact information for your
account.
| | 01:13 |

any newsletters you opted to receive from
us.
| | 00:11 |
Just click edit to enter a new email
address.
| | 00:14 |
Again, note that this only changes your
newsletter subscription email.
| | 00:18 |
To change the email associated with your
account with us, you'll have to go to my
| | 00:22 |
profile and change the email address here.
Let's go back to news and email options.
| | 00:27 |

alternate address, click manage a
| | 00:31 |
different email address.

notifications or you enter in the email
| | 00:38 |
field here is the email address that will
be effected by what you check or uncheck
| | 00:41 |
under newsletter subscriptions.
Let me just cancel that for a moment.
| | 00:48 |
So, you're free select whichever
newsletters you wish to receive or not
| | 00:50 |
receive from lynda.com.
You can roll over each newsletter to see a
| | 00:53 |
description of its contents.
Once you've made your choices, click Save.
