Working with an unavailable manager
Sometimes you feel inclined to proactively manage your manager. That's great. Other times, however, you might feel drawn into managing them for another reason. For example, maybe you've worked with a boss who is meaningfully unavailable. By unavailable, I mean they don't check on you. They don't blast the team with emails to keep them in the loop. They don't keep their door open, and so on. In short, they're closed instead of open and interactive. Think back over the last year. If you're seeing a lot of unanswered emails, unanswered phone messages, missed meetings, and unexplained absences from the office, you're dealing with an unavailable boss. This style is, of course, not good. So, why would someone adopt it? There are three main reasons. The first is personality. The second is that they don't like you. You two don't have good chemistry.
