Now it's time to see how close of a match you are to your ideal career. Most employers are looking for you to match approximately 75% of their skill and knowledge needs. This shows that you're a good fit while still leaving room for you to grow. As far as qualifications, you'll need to match all of their requirements. Remember, some of the qualifications are flexible, which means you can compensate with another area of strength. If you're looking at your Gap Analysis, and you're not a strong match yet, then you need to make some decisions.

If you're looking to make an immediate change, one option is to do a Gap Analysis on your second or third choice. You may match better with a different option. Otherwise, if you're only interested in your top role and willing to invest time and effort, then your next step would be to work on these gaps. Begin by prioritizing your Action steps from your Gap Analysis. If it's required for the job, then it'll be a higher priority. I recommend you to start with Action steps that you can achieve in a shorter amount of time or with less effort or financial cost.

This will help you to stay motivated. You might finally that you have a long road ahead to get your ideal career. It can be a little overwhelming. However, turn to your Resources that you have identified in your Gap Analysis. These will help you to achieve your goals. If you complete your Gap Analysis, and you find you match up with 75% of the skills and knowledge and meet all of their requirements, you'll want to take actions to get to that position. Begin by developing your marketing materials.

This includes your resume, cover letter, online profile, and possibly a portfolio. Second, you'll want to prepare for interviews. Third you can use your Gap Analysis to build your career story. This will help you to reach out to your networks and to find opportunities. Finally, you will be able to leverage your strong matches into salary negotiation. I recommend you do a Gap Analysis annually. It's helpful for staying current in your present role, setting goals during your annual review, moving up in your career, and changing roles.
