There are an overabundance of SEO blogs and articles out there. A lot of them in my opinion are not very good. Be very, very careful when reading or trying to learn more about SEO online. You may very well read outdated material or learn stuff that can actually hurt your web site more than help. The resources I'm providing here are mostly ones that I've personally read and in many cases they are from people whom I actually know and respect. There is much more than these, but these are the very best.

There are an overabundance of SEO blogs and articles out there. A lot of them in my opinion are not very good. Be very, very careful when reading or trying to learn more about SEO online. You may very well read outdated material or learn stuff that can actually hurt your web site more than help. The resources I'm providing here are mostly ones that I've personally read and in many cases they are from people whom I actually know and respect. There is much more than these, but these are the very best.

Of course the first resources I'd recommend you would be my High Rankings newsletter, the High Rankings Advisor, which comes out every other week for free and is chockfull of the same kinds of tips and techniques you've learned in this course. We have to have the High Rankings forum, which is good for more advanced issues. There're a bunch of moderators on duty to help answer your technical SEO questions as well as people to chat with on every other aspect of SEO. Search Engine Land has the latest search marketing news and numerous columnists who write daily on every aspect of search marketing.

While I write a monthly article for the 100% Organic SEO column, all of the other search marketing topics may be of interest to you as well. Be careful, as there is an enormous amount of information here, which can be very overwhelming. Plus, not every columnist is as good as every other, but definitely read through the ones in the category you're interested in and see which authors you like. Kim Krause Berg writes about the latest in website usability and how it relates to SEO at the Cre8pc blog.

You'll find other tips and tools there plus Kim's warm welcoming writing. The great thing about Kim is that she puts herself out there when she blogs. After reading a few posts you'll feel like you know her and possibly even her family as she talks about them a lot too. The Outspoken Media blog is headed up by Lisa Barone, who has quickly become one of my favorite bloggers. I'm a sucker for great writing and Lisa is a great writer. She draws you in from the start and keeps you there until the very end.

Lisa and her Outspoken colleagues' blog mainly about social media, online reputation management, branding and SEO, but there are always all the great topics that relate as well to online marketing in general. A definite must read. There's no one better to learn link building techniques from than Debra Mastaler. While her blog could certainly be updated more frequently, there're so much good stuff archived there that you will learn plenty of actionable ways of building links for your site while you're waiting for the next post. Debra is truly a linking genius.

Another amazing writer is Karon Thackston. She writes about SEO copyrighting in her Marketing Words blog and often as a guest author in our High Rankings Advisor newsletter. If you're confused about writing for your specific target audience, Karon has lots of great articles on that. She's also an expert at teaching people how to write about their products and services, while stressing the benefits not just the features. When Aaron Wall talks about SEO, you'll need to listen. Aaron is one of the few voices in SEO that are not simply parroted from others in the industry.

He is a true original thinker and it shows in the types of SEO articles and information he provides. Brian Clark and his team of guest writers do a great job of writing about writing at copyblogger.com. Michael Gray aka Graywolf, while often a tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist when it comes to Google, he does make you think. You don't always agree with him, but I love that he puts forth different and new ideas about SEO. He is one of the few speakers I've heard at the search marketing conferences that I go to who I actually felt I learned from.

If you're looking for the latest information on what Google is up to, then you'll want to keep tabs on the Official Google Blog. They often break news of new products and services there. Avinash writes about anything and everything Google Analytics. You can learn about new features and how to use existing features in interesting ways at Occam's Razor. So there you have it. The top-notch search marketing resources that you know you can trust to provide good, honest information and advice.

Q: In the “Determining competitiveness of keyword phrases” tutorial in the SEO: Search Engine Optimization Getting Started course, the author details the use of the “allintitle” advanced search operator in Google.  While the operator works in the example given in the tutorial, Google will not allow usage of the “allintitle” operator for more than two keywords at a time.  Is there any workaround to this problem?
A: Google’s policy on the “allintitle” operator has become a major problem in trying to do some competitive keyword research. There is a workaround, although it makes searching slower. Follow these steps:
1) Click on Google's Advanced Search link, then add the desired keyword phrase to the Find web pages that have... "this exact wording or phrase." Then click the "+Date, usage rights, numeric range, and more" link.
2) In the "Where your keywords show up:" dropdown menu, change "anywhere on page" to "in the title of the page."
This should allow the use of the “allintitle” search without Google thinking the user is a robot. To do the next one more quickly, just hit the back button of the browser and change to the next keyword phrase.


Q: Allintitle searches on Google seem to yield wildly inconsistent results. How does the author handle such inconsistent data when looking for good keywords? Are these results a recent phenomenon? Can can allintitle searches still be used reliably?
A: Unfortunately, Google has recently made it difficult to do the allintitle searches. It is still useful to a certain extent, but only because there currently isn’t anything better out there to judge the competition of a site.
Q: As a result of Google changing the "select previous interface" function, the methods in used for the Keyword Tool in the tutorials no longer work. Is there a method that can be used with the new keyword search tool that will produce the same results as shown in the training course?
A: Unfortunately, Google switched to the new Keyword Tool and also removed many keywords that aren't "commercially viable" from the database, so the methods in this title will not work exactly as described. You can still change from broad match to exact, but it is, unfortunately, harder to find. Right now, there does not appear to be a more effective way to do keyword research. Unfortunately, the other vendors that provide keyword research tools for a monthly fee are no better than Google's free one. The best advice for now would be to not focus too much on the keywords and just pick those that seem to be the most relevant for your site.
Q: Google AdWords looks different on my Mac than it does in these tutorials. Can you help me find the option for "How would you like to generate keyword ideas" (either  "descriptive words or phrases" vs. "website content") that you show in the video on using the Keyword Tool?
A: The Keyword Tool has changed slightly in appearance since this course was published, but the functionality is essentially the same. Under the "Find keywords, Based on one or more of the following", you can choose to enter keywords, have them restricted to suggestions based on a certain website, or even based on a category, such as Apparel. You can use one or more of these options.
